Measurement of the complex Faraday angle in thin-film metals and high temperature superconductors

A sensitive polarization modulation technique uses photoelastic modulation and hetrodyne detection to simultaneously measure the Faraday rotation and induced ellipticity in light transmitted by semiconducting and metallic samples. The frequencies measured are in the mid-infrared and correspond to the spectral lines of a CO2 laser. The measured temperature range is continuous and extends from 35 to 330K. Measured samples include GaAs and Si substrates, gold and copper films, and YBCO and BSCCO high temperature superconductors.

Spectral measurement of the Hall angle response in normal state cuprate superconductors

We measure the temperature and frequency dependence of the complex Hall angle for normal state YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ films from dc to far-infrared frequencies (20-250 cm$^{-1}$) using a new modulated polarization technique. We determine that the functional dependence of the Hall angle on scattering does not fit the expected Lorentzian response. We find spectral evidence supporting models of the Hall effect where the scattering $Γ_H$ is linear in T, suggesting that a single relaxation rate, linear in temperature, governs transport in the cuprates.

Temperature Dependence of Low-Lying Electronic Excitations of LaMnO_3

We report on the optical properties of undoped single crystal LaMnO_3, the parent compound of the colossal magneto-resistive manganites. Near-Normal incidence reflectance measurements are reported in the frequency range of 20-50,000 cm-1 and in the temperature range 10-300 K. The optical conductivity, s_1(w), is derived by performing a Kramers-Kronig analysis of the reflectance data. The far-infrared spectrum of s_1(w) displays the infrared active optical phonons. We observe a shift of several of the phonon to high frequencies as the temperature is lowered through the Neel temperature of the sample (T_N = 137 K). The high-frequency s_1(w) is characterized by the onset of absorption near 1.5 eV. This energy has been identified as the threshold for optical transitions across the Jahn-Teller split e_g levels. The spectral weight of this feature increases in the low-temperature state. This implies a transfer of spectral weight from the UV to the visible associated with the paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic state. We discuss the results in terms of the double exchange processes that affect the optical processes in this magnetic material.

Competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic correlations in layered manganites

The competition of charge, orbital, and ferromagnetic interactions in layered manganites is investigated by magneto-Raman scattering spectroscopy. We find that the colossal magnetoresistance effect in the layered compounds results from the interplay of the orbital and ferromagnetic double-exchange correlations. Inelastic scattering by charge-order fluctuations dominates the quasiparticle dynamics in the ferromagnetic-metal state. The scattering is suppressed at low frequencies, consistent with the opening of a charge-density wave pseudogap.

Anomalous Proximity Effect in Underdoped YBaCuO Josephson Junctions

Josephson junctions were photogenerated in underdoped thin films of the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ family using a near-field scanning optical microscope. The observation of the Josephson effect for separations as large as 100 nm between two wires indicates the existence of an anomalously large proximity effect and show that the underdoped insulating material in the gap of the junction is readily perturbed into the superconducting state. The critical current of the junctions was found to be consistent with the conventional Josephson relationship. This result constrains the applicability of SO(5) theory to explain the phase diagram of high critical temperature superconductors.

Temperature dependent scattering rate and optical mass of ferromagnetic metallic manganites

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3 and La_0.7Ca_0.3MnO_3. Transmission and reflection of thin films are measured in the infrared at temperatures from 10 - 150 K using Fourier-transform spectroscopy. The scattering rate and optical mass are obtained by fitting the far-infrared transmission to a Drude model. The scattering rate shows a T^2 dependence with temperature. The optical mass enhancement differs only slightly from specific heat results. In addition, we compare the infrared spectral weight to band structure calculations [M. Quijada et al., Phys. Rev. B 58, 16093 (1998)].

Infrared Hall effect in high Tc superconductors: Evidence for non-Fermi liquid Hall scattering

Infrared (20-120 cm-1 and 900-1100 cm-1) Faraday rotation and circular dichroism are measured in high Tc superconductors using sensitive polarization modulation techniques. Optimally doped YBCO thin films are studied at temperatures down to 15 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. At 1000 cm-1 the Hall conductivity varies strongly with temperature in contrast to the longitudinal conductivity which is nearly independent of temperature. The Hall scattering rate has a T^2 temperature dependence but, unlike a Fermi liquid, depends only weakly on frequency. The experiment puts severe constraints on theories of transport in the normal state of high Tc superconductors.

Mid-infrared Hall effect in thin-film metals: Probing the Fermi surface anisotropy in Au and Cu

A sensitive mid-infrared (MIR, 900-1100 cm-1, 112-136 meV) photo-elastic polarization modulation technique is used to measure simultaneously Faraday rotation and circular dichroism in thin metal films. These two quantities determine the complex AC Hall conductivity. This novel technique is applied to study Au and Cu thin films at temperatures down to 20 K and magnetic fields up to 8 T. The Hall frequency is consistent with band theory predictions. We report the first measurement of the MIR Hall scattering rate, which is significantly lower than that derived from Drude analysis of zero magnetic field MIR transmission measurements. This difference is qualitatively explained in terms of the anisotropy of the Fermi surface in Au and Cu.

Infrared and Raman studies of the Verwey transition in magnetite

We present infrared and Raman measurements of magnetite (Fe_3O_4). This material is known to undergo a metal-insulator and a structural transition (Verwey transition) at T_V=120K. At temperatures below T_V, we observe a strong gap-like suppression of the optical conductivity below 1000 cm^-1. The structural aspect of the Verwey transition demonstrates itself by the appearance of additional infrared- and Raman-active phonons. The frequencies of the infrared-active phonons show no significant singularities at the transition whereas their linewidths increase. The frequency and linewidth of the Raman-active phonon at 670 cm^-1 changes abruptly at the transition. For T<T_V, we observe fine structures in the infrared and Raman spectra which may indicate strong anharmonicity of the system below the transition. Our estimate of the effective mass of the carriers above the transition to be about 100 m, where m is the free electron mass. Our measurements favor a polaronic mechanism of conductivity and underline the importance of the electron-phonon interaction in the mechanism of the Verwey transition.

Magnetoresistance of YBa2Cu3O7 in the "cold spots" model

We calculate the in-plane magnetoresistance $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}$ of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_7$ in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the $CuO_2$ planes for the ``cold spots'' model. In this model, the electron relaxation time $τ_2\propto1/T^2$ at small regions on the Fermi surface near the Brillouin zone diagonals is much longer than the relaxation time $τ_1\propto1/T$ at the rest of the Fermi surface ($T$ is temperature). In qualitative agreement with the experiment, we find that Kohler's rule is strongly violated, but the ratio $Δρ_{xx}/ρ_{xx}\tan^2θ_H$, where $\tanθ_H$ is the Hall angle, is approximately temperature-independent. We find the ratio is about 5.5, which is of the same order of magnitude as in the experiment.

Optical Conductivity of Manganites: Crossover from Jahn-Teller Small Polaron to Coherent Transport in the Ferromagnetic State

We report on the optical properties of the hole-doped manganites Nd_{0.7}Sr _{0.3}MnO_{3}, La_{0.7}Ca_{0.3}MnO_{3}, and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}. The low-energy optical conductivity in the paramagnetic-insulating state of these materials is characterized by a broad maximum near 1 eV. This feature shifts to lower energy and grows in optical oscillator strength as the temperature is lowered into the ferromagnetic state. It remains identifiable well below Tc and transforms eventually into a Drude-like response. This optical behavior and the activated transport in the paramagnetic state of these materials are consistent with a Jahn-Teller small polaron. The optical spectra and oscillator strength changes compare well with models that include both double exchange and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect in the description of the electronic structure.

Photoinduced superconducting nanowires in Gd-Ba-Cu-O films

We report the fabrication of high Tc superconducting wires by photodoping a GdBa2Cu3O{6.5} thin film. An optical near-field probe was used to locally excite carriers in the system at room temperature. Trapping of the photogenerated electrons define a confining potential for the conducting holes in the CuO planes. Spatially resolved reflectance measurements show the photogenerated nanowires to be ~ 250 nm wide. Electron diffusion, before electron capture, is believed to be responsible for the observed width of the wires.

Phenomenological interpretations of the ac Hall effect in the normal state of YBa2Cu3O7

Ac and dc magnetotransport data in the normal state of YBa2Cu3O7 are analyzed within Fermi-liquid and non-Fermi-liquid models. In the Fermi-liquid analysis we use the Fermi surface deduced from band structure calculations and angular resolved photoemission experiments and assume that the electron relaxation rate varies over the Fermi surface. The non-Fermi-liquid models are the two-dimensional Luttinger liquid model and the charge-conjugation-symmetry model. We find that the existing experimental data can be adequately fitted by any of these models. This work provides a framework for the analysis of experiments that may discriminate among these models.

Sum rule for the optical Hall angle

We consider the optical Hall conductivity of a general electronic medium and prove that the optical Hall angle obeys a new sum rule. This sum rule governs the response of an electronic fluid to a Lorentz electric field and can thought of as the transverse counterpart to the f-sum rule in optical conductivity. The physical meaning of this sum rule is discussed, giving a number of examples of its application to a variety of of electronic media.

Giant Magneto-Resistance in Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ at Optical Frequencies

The optical properties of Nd$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_3$ thin films have been studied from 5 meV to 25 meV and from 0.25 eV to 3 eV, at temperatures from 15 K to 300 K and magnetic fields up to 8.9 T. A large transfer of spectral weight from high energy to low energy occurs as the temperature is decreased below 180 K, where the dc resistivity peaks, or as the magnetic field is increased. The optical data are found to be consistent with models that include both the double exchange interaction and the dynamic Jahn-Teller effect on the Mn$^{3+}$ e$_g$ levels.

Composite vortex model of the electrodynamics of high-$T_c$ superconductor

We propose a phenomenological model of vortex dynamics in which the vortex is taken as a composite object made of two components: the vortex current which is massless and driven by the Lorentz force, and the vortex core which is massive and driven by the Magnus force. By combining the characteristics of the Gittleman-Rosenblum model (Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 16}, 734 (1966)) and Hsu's theory of vortex dynamics (Physica {\bf C 213},305 (1993)), the model provides a good description of recent far infrared measurements of the magneto-conductivity tensor of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ films from 5 cm$^{-1}$ to 200 cm$^{-1}$.

Measurement of the Far Infrared Magneto-Conductivity Tensor of Superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ Thin Films

We report measurements of the far infrared transmission of superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ thin films from 5 cm$^{-1}$ to 200 cm$^{-1}$ in fields up to 14$T$. A Kramers-Kronig analysis of the magneto-transmission spectrum yields the magneto-conductivity tensor. The result shows that the magneto-conductivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ is dominated by three terms: a London term, a low frequency Lorentzian ($ω_1\approx $ 3 cm$% ^{-1}$) of width $Γ_1=$ 10 cm$^{-1}$ and a finite frequency Lorentzian of width $Γ_2=$ 17 cm$^{-1}$ at $ω_2=$ 24 cm$^{-1}$ in the hole cyclotron resonance active mode of circular polarization.\\

Grain Boundary Induced Magneto-Far Infrared Resonances in Superconducting YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ Thin Films

Spectral features induced by 45$^{\circ }$ in-plane misoriented grains have been observed in the far infrared magneto-transmission of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$% _{7-δ}$ thin films. Two strong dispersive features are found at 80 and 160 $cm^{-1}$ and a weaker one at 116 $cm^{-1}$. The data can be well represented by Lorentzian oscillator contributions to the conductivity. Several possible interpretations are discussed. We conclude that the resonances are due to vortex core excitations.
