Surface vs bulk electronic structures of a moderately correlated topological insulator YbB6 revealed by ARPES

Systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments have been carried out to investigate the bulk and (100) surface electronic structures of a topological mixed-valence insulator candidate, YbB6. The bulk states of YbB6 were probed with bulk-sensitive soft X-ray ARPES, which show strong three-dimensionality as required by cubic symmetry. Surprisingly the measured Yb 4f states are located around 1 eV and 2.3 eV below the Fermi level (EF), instead of being near EF as indicated by first principle calculations. The dispersive bands near EF are B 2p states, which hybridize with the 4f states. Using surface-sensitive vacuum-ultraviolet ARPES, we revealed two-dimensional surface states which form three electron-like Fermi surfaces (FSs) with Dirac-cone-like dispersions. The odd number of surface FSs gives the first indication that YbB6 is a moderately correlated topological insulator. The spin-resolved ARPES measurements provide further evidence that these surface states are spin polarized with spin locked to the crystal momentum. We have observed a second set of surface states with different topology (hole-like pockets). Clear folding of the bands suggest their origin from a 1X2 reconstructed surface. The topological property of the reconstructed surface states needs further studies.

Single Spin Asymmetries in Charged Kaon Production from Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a Transversely Polarized $^3{\rm{He}}$ Target

We report the first measurement of target single spin asymmetries of charged kaons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering of electrons off a transversely polarized $^3{\rm{He}}$ target. Both the Collins and Sivers moments, which are related to the nucleon transversity and Sivers distributions, respectively, are extracted over the kinematic range of 0.1$<$$x_{bj}$$<$0.4 for $K^{+}$ and $K^{-}$ production. While the Collins and Sivers moments for $K^{+}$ are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties, both moments for $K^{-}$ favor negative values. The Sivers moments are compared to the theoretical prediction from a phenomenological fit to the world data. While the $K^{+}$ Sivers moments are consistent with the prediction, the $K^{-}$ results differ from the prediction at the 2-sigma level.

Raman scattering investigation of superconducting Ba$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{4}$O

We have performed polarized Raman scattering measurements on the newly discovered superconductor Ba$_{2}$Ti$_{2}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{4}$O$_{2}$ ($T_c = 21$ K). We observe seven out of eight Raman active modes, with frequencies in good accordance with first-principle calculations. The phonon spectra suggest neither strong electron-phonon nor spin-phonon coupling and vary only slightly with temperature, except for one E$_g$ mode associated with large displacements of As atoms near the Ti$_2$O planes. We also identify a small anomaly around 125 K in the linewidth of a A$_{1g}$ mode involving the same As atoms. Our results suggest that the transition at 125 K is most likely driven by electronic interactions taking place in the Ti$_2$O planes.

Single Spin Asymmetries of Inclusive Hadrons Produced in Electron Scattering from a Transversely Polarized $^3$He Target

We report the first measurement of target single-spin asymmetries (A$_N$) in the inclusive hadron production reaction, $e~$+$~^3\text{He}^{\uparrow}\rightarrow h+X$, using a transversely polarized $^3$He target. The experiment was conducted at Jefferson Lab in Hall A using a 5.9-GeV electron beam. Three types of hadrons ($π^{\pm}$, $\text{K}^{\pm}$ and proton) were detected in the transverse hadron momentum range 0.54 $<p_T<$ 0.74 GeV/c. The range of $x_F$ for pions was -0.29 $<x_F<$ -0.23 and for kaons -0.25 $<x_F<$-0.18. The observed asymmetry strongly depends on the type of hadron. A positive asymmetry is observed for $π^+$ and $\text{K}^+$. A negative asymmetry is observed for $π^{-}$. The magnitudes of the asymmetries follow $|A^{π^-}| < |A^{π^+}| < |A^{K^+}|$. The K$^{-}$ and proton asymmetries are consistent with zero within the experimental uncertainties. The $π^{+}$ and $π^{-}$ asymmetries measured for the $^3$He target and extracted for neutrons are opposite in sign with a small increase observed as a function of $p_T$.

Observation of a Robust Zero-energy Bound State in Iron-based Superconductor Fe(Te,Se)

A robust zero-energy bound state (ZBS) in a superconductor, such as a Majorana or Andreev bound state, is often a consequence of non-trivial topological or symmetry related properties, and can provide indispensable information about the superconducting state. Here we use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to demonstrate, on the atomic scale, that an isotropic ZBS emerges at the randomly distributed interstitial excess Fe sites in the superconducting Fe(Te,Se). This ZBS is localized with a short decay length of ~ 10 Å, and surprisingly robust against a magnetic field up to 8 Tesla, as well as perturbations by neighboring impurities. We find no natural explanation for the observation of such a robust zero-energy bound state, indicating a novel mechanism of impurities or an exotic pairing symmetry of the iron-based superconductivity.

Observation of strong-coupling pairing with weakened Fermi-surface nesting at optimal hole doping in Ca$_{0.33}$Na$_{0.67}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We report an angle-resolved photoemission investigation of optimally-doped Ca$_{0.33}$Na$_{0.67}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. The Fermi surface topology of this compound is similar to that of the well-studied Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ material, except for larger hole pockets resulting from a higher hole concentration per Fe atoms. We find that the quasi-nesting conditions are weakened in this compound as compared to Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. As with Ba$_{0.6}$K$_{0.4}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ though, we observe nearly isotropic superconducting gaps with Fermi surface-dependent magnitudes. A small variation in the gap size along the momentum direction perpendicular to the surface is found for one of the Fermi surfaces. Our superconducting gap results on all Fermi surface sheets fit simultaneously very well to a global gap function derived from a strong coupling approach, which contains only 2 global parameters.

Observation of anomalous temperature dependence of spectrum on small Fermi surfaces in a BiS2-based superconductor

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the BiS2-based superconductor Nd(O,F)BiS2. Two small electron-like Fermi surfaces around X (pi, 0) are observed, which enclose 2.4% and 1.1% of the Brillouin zone area, respectively, corresponding to an electron doping of 7% per Bi site. The low-energy spectrum consists of a weakly-dispersing broad hump and a dispersive branch, which follows well the calculated band dispersion. This hump is drastically suppressed with increasing temperature, while the dispersive branch is essentially unaffected. The anomalous thermal effect indicates a highly interacting electronic state, in which the superconducting pairing develops.

Measurement of pretzelosity asymmetry of charged pion production in Semi-Inclusive Deep Inelastic Scattering on a polarized $^3$He target

An experiment to measure single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive production of charged pions in deep-inelastic scattering on a transversely polarized $^3$He target was performed at Jefferson Lab in the kinematic region of $0.16<x<0.35$ and $1.4<Q^2<2.7$ ${\rm GeV^2}$. The pretzelosity asymmetries on $^3$He, which can be expressed as the convolution of the $h^\perp_{1T}$ transverse momentum dependent distribution functions and the Collins fragmentation functions in the leading order, were measured for the first time. Using the effective polarization approximation, we extracted the corresponding neutron asymmetries from the measured $^3$He asymmetries and cross-section ratios between the proton and $^3$He. Our results show that for both $π^{\pm}$ on $^3$He and on the neutron the pretzelosity asymmetries are consistent with zero within experimental uncertainties.

Observation of well-defined quasi-particle over a wide energy range in quasi-2D system

We report the observation by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of a highly anisotropic Dirac-cone structure in high quality SrMnBi2 crystals. We reveal a well-defined sharp quasi-particle, linearly dispersive with $v_{F_1}/v_{F_2}\sim$ 5--6, forming a hole-like anisotropic Dirac-cone. The density of states for the cone remains linear up to as high as ~650 meV of binding energy. The scattering rate of the quasi-particle (QP) increases linearly as function of binding energy, indicating a non-Fermi-Liquid behavior. Our results suggest the existence of a dilute two-dimensional electron gas system in this three-dimensional material.

Structural phase transition induced by van Hove singularity in 5d transition metal compound IrTe2

Comprehensive studies of the electronic states of Ir 5d and Te 5p have been performed to elucidate the origin of the structural phase transition in IrTe2 by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering. While no considerable changes are observed in the configuration of the Ir 5d electronic states across the transition, indicating that the Ir 5d orbitals are not involved in the transition, we reveal a van Hove singularity at the Fermi level (EF) related to the Te px+py orbitals, which is removed from EF at low temperatures. The wavevector connecting the adjacent saddle points is consistent with the in-plane projection of the superstructure modulation wavevector. These results can be qualitatively understood with the Rice-Scott "saddle-point" mechanism, while effects of the lattice distortions need to be additionally involved.

Coexistence of orbital degeneracy lifting and superconductivity in iron-based superconductors

In contrast to conventional superconducting (SC) materials, superconductivity in high-temperature superconductors (HTCs) usually emerges in the presence of other fluctuating orders with similar or higher energy scales, thus instigating debates over their relevance for the SC pairing mechanism. In iron-based superconductors (IBSCs), local orbital fluctuations have been proposed to be directly responsible for the structural phase transition and closely related to the observed giant magnetic anisotropy and electronic nematicity. However, whether superconductivity can emerge from, or even coexist with orbital fluctuations, remains unclear. Here we report the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) observation of the lifting of symmetry-protected band degeneracy, and consequently the breakdown of local tetragonal symmetry in the SC state of Li(Fe1-xCox)As. Supported by theoretical simulations, we analyse the doping and temperature dependences of this band-splitting and demonstrate an intimate connection between ferro-orbital correlations and superconductivity.

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy observation of anomalous electronic states in EuFe$_2$As$_{2-x}$P$_x$

We used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to investigate the electronic structure of EuFe$_2$As$_2$, EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$ and EuFe$_2$P$_2$. We observed doubled core level peaks associated to the pnictide atoms, which are related to a surface state. Nevertheless, strong electronic dispersion along the $c$ axis, especially pronounced in EuFe$_2$P$_2$, is observed for at less one band, thus indicated that the Fe states, albeit probably affected at the surface, do not form pure two-dimensional surface states. However, this latter material shows reduced spectral weight near the Fermi level as compared to EuFe$_2$As$_2$ and EuFe$_2$As$_{1.4}$P$_{0.6}$. An anomalous jump is also found in the electronic states associated with the Eu$^{2+}$ $f$ states in EuFe$_2$P$_2$.

Possible nodal superconducting gap emerging at the Lifshitz transition in heavily hole-doped Ba0.1K0.9Fe2As2

We performed a high energy resolution ARPES investigation of over-doped Ba0.1K0.9Fe2As2 with T_c= 9 K. The Fermi surface topology of this material is similar to that of KFe2As2 and differs from that of slightly less doped Ba0.3K0.7Fe2As2, implying that a Lifshitz transition occurred between x=0.7 and x=0.9. Albeit for a vertical node found at the tip of the emerging off-M-centered Fermi surface pocket lobes, the superconducting gap structure is similar to that of Ba0.3K0.7Fe2As2, suggesting that the paring interaction is not driven by the Fermi surface topology.

Surface and Bulk Electronic Structure of the Strongly Correlated System SmB$_{6}$ and Implications for a Topological Kondo Insulator

Recent theoretical calculations and experimental results suggest that the strongly correlated material SmB$_{6}$ may be a realization of a topological Kondo insulator. We have performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study on SmB$_{6}$ in order to elucidate elements of the electronic structure relevant to the possible occurrence of a topological Kondo insulator state. The obtained electronic structure in the whole three-dimensional momentum space reveals one electron-like 5d bulk band centred at the X point of the bulk Brillouin zone that is hybridized with strongly correlated f electrons, as well as the opening of a Kondo bandgap ($Δ_B$ $\sim$ 20 meV) at low temperature. In addition, we observe electron-like bands forming three Fermi surfaces at the center $\barΓ$ point and boundary $\bar{X}$ point of the surface Brillouin zone. These bands are not expected from calculations of the bulk electronic structure, and their observed dispersion characteristics are consistent with surface states. Our results suggest that the unusual low-temperature transport behavior of SmB$_{6}$ is likely to be related to the pronounced surface states sitting inside the band hybridisation gap and/or the presence of a topological Kondo insulating state.

In-plane optical spectroscopy study on FeSe epitaxial thin film grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate

We perform in-plane optical spectroscopy measurement on (00l) FeSe thin-film grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate by pulsed laser deposition method. The study indicates that the low frequency conductivity consists of two Drude components, a broad one which takes up most of the spectral weight and a very narrow one roughly below 100-150 \cm. The narrow Drude component locates at so low frequencies that no such behavior was observed in iron pnictides. The overall plasma frequency is found to be smaller than the FeAs based compounds, suggesting a stronger correlation effect. Similar to iron pnictides, a temperature-induced spectral weight transfer is observed for FeSe. However, the relevant energy scale is lower. Additionally, different from a recent ARPES measurement which revealed a spin density wave (SDW) order at low temperature for FeSe thin films grown on SrTiO$_3$ substrate, no signature of the band structure reconstruction arising from the formation of the SDW order is seen by optical measurement in the thick FeSe films.

Persistent high-energy spin excitations in iron pnictide superconductors

Motivated by the premise that superconductivity in iron-based superconductors is unconventional and mediated by spin fluctuations, an intense research effort has been focused on characterizing the spin excitation spectrum in the magnetically ordered parent phases of the Fe-pnictides2,3 and - chalcogenides4. For these undoped materials it is well-established that the spin excitation spectrum consists of a sharp, highly dispersive magnon spanning an energy range of up to 200 meV (ref. 3). The fate of these high-energy magnetic modes upon sizable doping is hitherto unresolved. Using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering we show that optimally doped superconducting Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2 retains well defined, dispersive high-energy modes of magnetic origin. These paramagnon modes are softer than, though as intense as, the magnon of undoped antiferromagnetic BaFe2As2. The persistence of spin excitations well into the superconducting phase suggests that, if spin fluctuations are responsible for superconducting pairing, they originate from a distinctly correlated spin-state. This connects Fe-pnictide superconductors to the high-Tc cuprates, for which in spite of fundamental differences in the electronic structure, similar paramagnon modes are present5.

Experimental investigation of the electronic structure of Ca$_{0.83}$La$_{0.17}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

We performed a combined angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy study of the electronic structure of electron-doped Ca$_{0.83}$La$_{0.17}$Fe$_2$As$_2$. A surface reconstruction associated with the dimerization of As atoms is observed directly in the real space, as well as the consequent band folding in the momentum space. Besides this band folding effect, the Fermi surface topology of this material is similar to that reported previously for BaFe$_{1.85}$Co$_{0.15}$As$_2$, with $Γ$-centred hole pockets quasi-nested to M-centred electron pockets by the antiferromagnetic wave vector. Although no superconducting gap is observed by ARPES possibly due to low superconducting volume fraction, a gap-like density of states depression of $7.7\pm 2.9$ meV is determined by scanning tunneling microscopy.

Observation of momentum space semi-localization in Si-doped $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of Si-doped $β$-Ga$_2$O$_3$. We observed very small photoemission intensity near the Fermi level corresponding to non-dispersive states assigned to Si impurities. We show evidence for a quantization of these states that is accompanied by a confinement in the momentum space consistent with a real-space finite confinement observed in a previous scanning tunneling microscopy study. Our results suggest that this semi-localization in the conjugate spaces plays a crucial role in the electronic conduction of this material.
