The mass of the sdB primary of the binary HS 2333+3927

Short period sdB binaries with cool companions are crucial to understand pre-CV evolution, because they will evolve into cataclysmic variables, when the sdB will have left the extended horizontal branch. Recently we discovered the sixth such system, HS 2333+3927, consisting of an sdB star and an M dwarf (period: 0.172 d) with a very strong reflection effect, but no eclipses. The reflection is stronger than in any of the other similar systems which renders a quantitative spectral analysis very difficult because the Balmer line profiles may be disturbed by the reflected light. A spectroscopic analysis results in Teff = 36500 K, log g = 5.70, and log (n_He/n_H) = -2.15. Mass-radius relations were derived from the results of the analysis of light and radial-velocity curves. Comparison with the mass-radius relation derived from the surface gravity of the sdB star favours a rather low mass of 0.38 Msun for the primary. The mass of the companion is 0.29 M_sun. HS 2333+3927 is the only known sdB+dM system with a period above the CV period gap.

Double degenerates and progenitors of supernovae type Ia

We report on systematic radial velocity surveys for white dwarf - white dwarf binaries (double degenerates - DDs) including SPY (ESO Supernovae Ia progenitor survey) recently carried out at the VLT. A large sample of DD will allow us to put strong constrains on the phases of close binary evolution of the progenitor systems and to perform an observational test of the DD scenario for supernovae of type Ia. We explain how parameters of the binaries can be derived from various methods. Results for a sample of DDs are presented and discussed.

2MASSJ0516288+260738: Discovery of the first eclipsing late K + Brown dwarf system?

We report the discovery of a new eclipsing system less than one arcminute south of the pulsating DB white dwarf KUV 05134+2605. The object could be identified with the point source 2MASSJ0516288+260738 published by the Two Micron All Sky Survey. We present and discuss the first light curves as well as some additional colour and spectral information. The eclipse period of the system is 1.29d, and, assuming this to be identical to the orbital period, the best light curve solution yields a mass ratio of m2/m1=0.11, a radius ratio of r2/r1~1 and an inclination of 74 deg. The spectral anaylsis results in a Teff=4200K for the primary. On this basis, we suggest that the new system probably consists of a late K + Brown dwarf (which would imply a system considerably younger than ~0.01 Gyr to have r2/r1~1), and outline possible future observations.

Search for double degenerate progenitors of supernovae type Ia with SPY

We report on a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 560 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations until now. Ninety new DDs have been discovered, including short period systems with masses close to the Chandrasekhar mass.

Tomographic Separation of Composite Spectra. X. The Massive Close Binary HD 101131

We present the first orbital elements for the massive close binary, HD 101131, one of the brightest objects in the young, open cluster, IC 2944. This system is a double-lined spectroscopic binary in an elliptical orbit with a period of 9.64659 +/- 0.00012 days. It is a young system of unevolved stars (approximately 2 million years old) that are well within their critical Roche surfaces. We use a Doppler tomography algorithm to reconstruct the individual component optical spectra, and we apply well known criteria to arrive at classifications of O6.5 V((f)) and O8.5 V for the primary and secondary, respectively. We compare the reconstructed spectra of the components to single star, spectrum standards to determine a flux ratio of f_2/f_1 = 0.55 +/- 0.08 in the V-band. Both components are rotating faster than synchronously. We estimate the temperatures and luminosities of the components from the observed spectral classifications, composite V magnitude, and cluster distance modulus. The lower limits on the masses derived from the orbital elements and the lack of eclipses are 25 solar masses and 14 solar masses for the primary and secondary, respectively. These limits are consistent with the larger masses estimated from the positions of the stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram and evolutionary tracks for single stars.

Search for progenitors of supnernovae type Ia with SPY

We have started a large survey for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY). About 400 white dwarfs were checked for radial velocity variations during the first 15 months of this project, twice the number of white dwarfs investigated during the last 20 years. We give an overview of the SPY project and present first results Fifty four new DDs have been discovered, seven of them double lined (only 18 and 6 objects of these groups were known before, respectively). The final sample is expected to contain 150 to 200 DDs. Eight new pre-cataclysmic binaries were also detected. SPY is the first DD survey which encompasses also non-DA white dwarfs. SPY produces an immense, unique sample of very high resolution white dwarf spectra, which provides a lot of spin-off opportunities. We describe our projects to exploit the SPY sample for the determination of basic parameters, kinematics, and rotational velocities of white dwarfs. A catalogue with a first subset of our white dwarf data has already been published by Koester et al. 2001.

Binaries discovered by the SPY project. II. HE 1414-0848: a double degenerate with a mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit

In the course of our search for double degenerate (DD) binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY) we discovered that the white dwarf HE 1414-0848 is a double-lined DA+DA binary with an orbital period of P = 12h 25m 39s. Semi-amplitudes of 128km/s and 100km/s are derived for the individual components. The amplitude ratio and the measured difference in gravitational redshift is used to estimate the masses of the individual components: 0.55Msol and 0.71Msol. Hence the total mass of the HE 1414-0848 system is 1.26Msol, only 10% below the Chandrasekhar limit. The results of a model atmosphere analysis are consistent with our mass estimated from the orbit. Temperatures of the individual components are also determined. Possible scenarios for the formation of this system are discussed. The system will merge due to loss of angular momentum via gravitational wave radiation after two Hubble times. HE 1414-0848 does not qualify as a SN Ia progenitor, but it is the most massive close DD known today.

HS 0705+6700: a new eclipsing sdB binary

We report the discovery of an eclipsing binary - HS 0705+6700 - being an sdB star with a faint companion. From its light curve the orbital period of 8263.87 s, the mass ratio of the system q = 0.28, the inclination of 84.4 deg and other system parameters are derived. The companion does not contribute to the optical light of the system except through a strong reflection effect. The semi-amplitude of the radial velocity curve K1 = 85.8 km/s and a mass function of f(m) = 0.00626 Msun are determined. A spectroscopic analysis of the blue spectra results in Teff = 28800K, log g = 5.40, and log n(He)/n(H) = -2.68. These characteristics are typical for sdB stars, as is its mass of 0.48 Msun. According to its mass (0.13 Msun) and radius (0.19 Rsun), the companion is an M dwarf. The primary is in a core helium burning phase of evolution, and the system must have gone through a common envelope stage when the primary was near the tip of the red giant branch.

Binaries discovered by the SPY project I. HE 1047-0436: a subdwarf B + white dwarf system

In the course of our search for double degenerate binaries as potential progenitors of type Ia supernovae with the UVES spectrograph at the ESO VLT (ESO SN Ia Progenitor surveY - SPY) we discovered that the sdB star HE 1047-0436 is radial velocity variable. The orbital period of 1.213253d, a semi-amplitude of 94km/s, and a minimum mass of the invisible companion of 0.44Msol are derived from the analysis of the radial velocity curve. We use an upper limit on the projected rotational velocity of the sdB star to constrain the system inclination and the companion mass to M>0.71Msol, bringing the total mass of the system closer to the Chandrasekhar limit. However, the system will merge due to loss of angular momentum via gravitational wave radiation only after several Hubble times. Atmospheric parameters and metal abundances are also derived. The resulting values are typical for sdB stars.
