Hindrance of heavy-ion fusion due to nuclear incompressibility

We propose a new mechanism to explain the unexpected steep falloff of fusion cross sections at energies far below the Coulomb barrier. The saturation properties of nuclear matter are causing a hindrance to large overlap of the reacting nuclei and consequently a sensitive change of the nuclear potential inside the barrier. We report in this letter a good agreement with the data of coupled-channels calculation for the {64}Ni+{64}Ni combination using the double-folding potential with M3Y-Reid effective N-N forces supplemented with a repulsive core that reproduces the nuclear incompressibility for total overlap.

Sensitivity to multi-phonon excitations in heavy-ion fusion reactions

Measured cross sections for the fusion of {64}Ni with {64}Ni, {74}Ge, and {100}Mo targets are analyzed in a coupled-channels approach. The data for the {64}Ni target above 0.1 mb are reproduced by including couplings to the low-lying 2^+ and 3^- states and the mutual and two-phonon excitations of these states. The calculations become more challenging as the fusing nuclei become softer and heavier, and excitations to multi-phonon states start to play an increasingly important role. Thus it is necessary to include up to four-phonon excitations in order to reproduce the data for the {64}Ni+{74}Ge system. Similar calculations for {64}Ni+{100}Mo, and also for the symmetric {74}Ge+{74}Ge system, show large discrepancies with the data. Possible ways to improve the calculations are discussed.

Systematics of heavy-ion fusion hindrance at extreme sub-barrier energies

The recent discovery of hindrance in heavy-ion induced fusion reactions at extreme sub-barrier energies represents a challenge for theoretical models. Previously, it has been shown that in medium-heavy systems, the onset of fusion hindrance depends strongly on the "stiffness" of the nuclei in the entrance channel. In this work, we explore its dependence on the total mass and the $Q$-value of the fusing systems and find that the fusion hindrance depends in a systematic way on the entrance channel properties over a wide range of systems.

Hindrance of Heavy-ion Fusion at Extreme Sub-Barrier Energies in Open-shell Colliding Systems

The excitation function for the fusion-evaporation reaction 64Ni+100Mo has been measured down to a cross-section of ~5 nb. Extensive coupled-channels calculations have been performed, which cannot reproduce the steep fall-off of the excitation function at extreme sub-barrier energies. Thus, this system exhibits a hindrance for fusion, a phenomenon that has been discovered only recently. In the S-factor representation introduced to quantify the hindrance, a maximum is observed at E_s=120.6 MeV, which corresponds to 90% of the reference energy E_s^ref, a value expected from systematics of closed-shell systems. A systematic analysis of Ni-induced fusion reactions leading to compound nuclei with mass A=100-200 is presented in order to explore a possible dependence of the fusion hindrance on nuclear structure.

Influence of nuclear structure on sub-barrier hindrance in Ni+Ni fusion

Fusion-evaporation cross sections for $^{64}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni have been measured down to the 10 nb level. For fusion between two open-shell nuclei, this is the first observation of a maximum in the $S$-factor, which signals a strong sub-barrier hindrance. A comparison with the $^{58}$Ni+$^{58}$Ni, $^{58}$Ni+$^{60}$Ni, and $^{58}$Ni+$^{64}$Ni systems indicates a strong dependence of the energy where the hindrance occurs on the stiffness of the interacting nuclei.

Breakup of $^{17}$F on $^{208}$Pb near the Coulomb barrier

Angular distributions of oxygen produced in the breakup of $^{17}$F incident on a $^{208}$Pb target have been measured around the grazing angle at beam energies of 98 and 120 MeV. The data are dominated by the proton stripping mechanism and are well reproduced by dynamical calculations. The measured breakup cross section is approximately a factor of 3 less than that of fusion at 98 MeV. The influence of breakup on fusion is discussed.

Multipole Expansion for Relativistic Coulomb Excitation

We derive a general expression for the multipole expansion of the electro-magnetic interaction in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, which can be employed in higher-order dynamical calculations of Coulomb excitation. The interaction has diagonal as well as off-diagonal multipole components, associated with the intrinsic and relative coordinates of projectile and target. A simple truncation in the off-diagonal components gives excellent results in first-order perturbation theory for distant collisions and for beam energies up to 200 MeV/nucleon.

Elastic scattering and breakup of 17^F at 10 MeV/nucleon

Angular distributions of fluorine and oxygen produced from 170 MeV 17^F incident on 208^Pb were measured. The elastic scattering data are in good agreement with optical model calculations using a double-folding potential and parameters similar to those obtained from 16^O+208^Pb. A large yield of oxygen was observed near θ_lab=36 deg. It is reproduced fairly well by a calculation of the (17^F,16^O) breakup, which is dominated by one-proton stripping reactions. The discrepancy between our previous coincidence measurement and theoretical predictions was resolved by including core absorption in the present calculation.

Electromagnetic Dissociation of 8B and the Rate of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B Reaction in the Sun

In an effort to better determine the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, we have performed inclusive and exclusive measurements of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B. The former was a study of longitudinal momentum distributions of 7Be fragments emitted in the Coulomb breakup of intermediate energy 8B beams on Pb and Ag targets. Analysis of these data yielded the E2 contribution to the breakup cross section. In the exclusive measurement, we determined the cross section for the Coulomb breakup of 8B on Pb at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction. Interpreting the measurements with 1st-order perturbation theory, we obtained SE2/SE1 = 4.7 (+ 2.0,- 1.3) times 10^-4 at Erel = 0.6 MeV, and S17(0) = 17.8 (+ 1.4,- 1.2) eV b. Semiclassical 1st-order perturbation theory and fully quantum mechanical continuum-discretized coupled channels analyses yield nearly identical results for the E1 strength relevant to solar neutrino flux calculations, suggesting that theoretical reaction mechanism uncertainties need not limit the precision of Coulomb breakup determinations of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B S factor. A recommended value of S17(0) based on a weighted average of this and other measurements is presented.

S17(0) Determined from the Coulomb Breakup of 83 MeV/nucleon 8B

A kinematically complete measurement was made of the Coulomb dissociation of 8B nuclei on a Pb target at 83 MeV/nucleon. The cross section was measured at low relative energies in order to infer the astrophysical S factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction. A first-order perturbation theory analysis of the reaction dynamics including E1, E2, and M1 transitions was employed to extract the E1 strength relevant to neutrino-producing reactions in the solar interior. By fitting the measured cross section from Erel = 130 keV to 400 keV, we find S17(0) = 17.8 (+1.4, -1.2) eV b.

Semiclassical Approximation to Neutron Star Superfluidity Corrected for Proximity Effects

The inner crust of a neutron star is a superfluid and inhomogeneous system, consisting of a lattice of nuclei immersed in a sea of neutrons. We perform a quantum calculation of the associated pairing gap and compare it to the results one obtains in the Local Density Approximation (LDA). It is found that the LDA overestimates the spatial dependence of the gap, and leads to a specific heat of the system which is too large at low temperatures, as compared with the quantal result. This is caused by the neglect of proximity effects and the delocalized character of the single-particle wavefunctions close to the Fermi energy. It is possible to introduce an alternative, simple semiclassical approximation of the pairing gap which leads to a specific heat that is in good agreement with the quantum calculation.

Measurement of E2 Transitions in the Coulomb Dissociation of 8B

In an effort to understand the implications of Coulomb dissociation experiments for the determination of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction rate, longitudinal momentum distributions of 7Be fragments produced in the Coulomb dissociation of 44 and 81 MeV/nucleon 8B beams on a Pb target were measured. These distributions are characterized by asymmetries interpreted as the result of interference between E1 and E2 transition amplitudes in the Coulomb breakup. At the lower beam energy, both the asymmetries and the measured cross sections are well reproduced by perturbation theory calculations, allowing a determination of the E2 strength.

Nuclear Breakup of Borromean Nuclei

We study the eikonal model for the nuclear-induced breakup of Borromean nuclei, using Li11 and He6 as examples. The full eikonal model is difficult to realize because of six-dimensional integrals, but a number of simplifying approximations are found to be accurate. The integrated diffractive and one-nucleon stripping cross sections are rather insensitive to the neutron-neutron correlation, but the two-nucleon stripping does show some dependence on the correlation. The distribution of excitation energy in the neutron-core final state in one-neutron stripping reactions is quite sensitive to the shell structure of the halo wave function. Experimental data favor models with comparable amounts of s- and p-wave in the Li11 halo.
