Vacuum polarization in high-dimensional AdS spacetime in the presence of a cosmic string and compactified extra dimension

In this paper, we analyze the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the field squared and the energy-momentum tensor associated with a charged and massive scalar quantum field in a generalized $(D+1)$-dimensional anti-de Sitter space in the presence of a cosmic string, admitting a magnetic flux running along the string's core. In addition we admit that an extra coordinate is compactified to a circle and presents a magnetic flux running along its center. This compactification is implemented by imposing a quasiperiodic condition on the field with an arbitrary phase. The calculation of the VEVs of the field squared and the energy-moment tensor, are developed by using positive-energy Wightman function. The latter is construct by the mode sum over the complete set of normalized bosonic wavefunctions. Due to the compactification, the Wightman function is presented as the sum of two distinct contributions. The first one corresponding to the idealized cosmic string, and the second is induced by the compactification. The latter goes to zero for an infinite length of the compactification. As a consequence of the general structure of the Wightman function, both VEVs present also this decomposition. Moreover, due to the Aharanov-Bohm type of interaction between the field with the magnetic fluxes, the VEVs depend on the fractional part of the ration between the total flux and the quantum one.

Induced current in high-dimensional AdS spacetime in the presence of a cosmic string and a compactified extra dimension

In this paper, we analyse the bosonic current densities induced by a magnetic flux running along the core of an idealized cosmic string in a high-dimensional AdS spacetime, admitting that an extra dimension coordinate is compactified. Additionally we admit the presence of a magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. In order to develop this analysis we calculate the complete set of normalized bosonic wave-functions obeying a quasiperiodicity condition, with arbitrary phase $β$, along the compactified extra dimension. In this context, only azimuthal and axial currents densities take place. As to the azimuthal current, two contributions appear. The first one corresponds to the standard azimuthal current in high-dimensional AdS spacetime with a cosmic string without compactification while the second contribution is a new one, induced by the compactification itself. The latter is an even function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis and is an odd function of the magnetic flux along its core with period equal to quantum flux, $Φ_0=2π/e$. On the other hand, the nonzero axial current density is an even function of the magnetic flux along the core of the string and an odd function of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. We also find that the axial current density vanishes for untwisted and twisted bosonic fields in the absence of the magnetic flux enclosed by the compactified axis. Some asymptotic expressions for the current density are provided for specific limiting cases of the physical parameter of the model.

Landau Levels in the Presence of a Cosmic String in Rainbow Gravity

In this paper we analyze the energy levels of a charged scalar particle placed in the static cosmic string spacetime, under the action of a uniform magnetic field parallel to the string, in the context of the semi-classical approach of the rainbow gravity. Firstly, we focus on the non-relativistic regime by solving the corresponding Schrödinger equation, following by a complete relativistic treatment of the problem in which we considered the Klein-Gordon equation. In both cases we find exact expressions for the Landau levels in terms of the rainbow functions, used to characterize a rainbow gravity model. In order to achieve the results of this paper we considered three different rainbow gravity models mostly used in the literature and compare the resulting modifications in the Landau levels with the standard case, namely without rainbow gravity.

Scalar Casimir effect in a high-dimensional cosmic dispiration spacetime

In this paper we present a complete and detailed analysis of the calculation of both the Wightman function and the vacuum expectation value of the energy-momentum tensor that arise from quantum vacuum fluctuations of massive and massless scalar fields in the cosmic dispiration spacetime, which is formed by the combination of two topological defects: a cosmic string and a screw dislocation. This spacetime is obtained in the framework of the Einstein-Cartan theory of gravity and is considered to be a chiral space-like cosmic string. For completeness we perform the calculation in a high-dimensional spacetime, with flat extra dimensions. We found closed expressions for the the energy-momentum tensor and, in particular, in (3+1)-dimensions, we compare our results with existing previous ones in the literature for the massless scalar field case.

Casimir Effect in the Rainbow Einstein's Universe

In the present paper we investigate the effects caused by the modification of the dispersion relation obtained by solving the Klein-Gordon equation in the closed Einstein's universe in the context of rainbow's gravity models. Thus, we analyse how the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the scalar field are modified when compared with the results obtained in the usual General Relativity scenario. The regularization, and consequently the renormalization, of the vacuum energy is performed adopting the Epstein-Hurwitz and Riemann's zeta functions.

Noninertial effects on nonrelativistic topological quantum scattering

We investigate noninertial effects on the scattering problem of a nonrelativistic particle in the cosmic string spacetime. By considering the nonrelativistic limit of the Dirac equation we are able to show, in the regime of small rotational frequencies, that the phase shift has two contribution: one related to the noninertial reference frame, and the other, due to the cosmic string conical topology. We also show that both the incident wave and the scattering amplitude are altered as a consequence of the noninertial reference frame and depend on the rotational frequency.

Quantum Brownian motion in an analog Friedmann-Robertson-Walker geometry

In this paper we study the effects of quantum scalar field vacuum fluctuations on scalar test particles in an analog model for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat geometry. In this scenario, the cases with one and two perfectly reflecting plane boundaries are considered as well the case without boundary. We find that the particles can undergo Brownian motion with a nonzero mean squared velocity induced by the quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the time dependent background and the presence of the boundaries. Typical singularities which appears due to the presence of the boundaries in flat spacetime can be naturally regularized for an asymptotically bounded expanding scale function. Thus, shifts in the velocity could be, at least in principle, detectable experimentally. The possibility to implement this observation in an analog cosmological model by the use of a Bose-Einstein condensate is also discussed.

Light-Cone Fluctuations in the Cosmic String Spacetime

In this paper we consider light-cone fluctuations arising as a consequence of the nontrivial topology of the locally flat cosmic string spacetime. By setting the light-cone along the z-direction we are able to develop a full analysis to calculate the renormalized graviton two-point function, as well as the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function and the time delay (or advance) in the propagation of a light-pulse. We found that all these expressions depend upon the parameter characterizing the conical topology of the cosmic string spacetime and vanish in the absence of it. We also point out that at large distances from the cosmic string the mean square fluctuation in the geodesic interval function is extremely small while in the opposite limit it logarithmically increases, improving the signal and thus, making possible the detection of such quantity.

Noninertial effects on the ground state energy of a massive scalar field in the cosmic string spacetime

We investigate the influence of noninertial effects on the ground state energy of a massive scalar field in the cosmic string spacetime. We generalize the results obtained by Khusnutdinov and Bordag [N. R. Khusnutdinov and M. Bordag, Phys. Rev. D 59, 064017 (1999)] to a noninertial reference frame and show, by contrast, that a non-vanishing contribution to the ground state energy stems from the noninertial effects. Moreover, we show that there is no influence of the curvature of the spacetime on this non-vanishing contribution to the ground state energy of a massive scalar field.

Casimir effect due to a slowly rotating source in the weak field approximation

We calculate the renormalized vacuum energy density for a massless scalar field confined between two nearby parallel plates formed by ideal uncharged conductors, placed very close to the surface of a rotating spherical gravitational source with mass $M$, radius $R$ and momentum angular $J$, at the equatorial region. We consider that the source rotates slowly and that the gravitational field is weak. Corrections to the Casimir energy density induced by the gravitational field generated by this source are calculated up to $M/R^2$ order. The obtained results show us that there is an important modification in the Casimir energy only in this order of approximation, which depends on the surface gravity as well as on the rotation of the source. Thermal corrections to the Casimir energy found also are calculated in all these orders.

Casimir-Polder interaction between an atom and a conducting wall in cosmic string spacetime

The Casimir-Polder interaction potential is evaluated for a polarizable microparticle and a conducting wall in the geometry of a cosmic string perpendicular to the wall. The general case of the anisotropic polarizability tensor for the microparticle is considered. The corresponding force is a function of the wall-microparticle and cosmic string-microparticle distances. Depending on the orientation of the polarizability tensor principal axes the force can be either attractive or repulsive. The asymptotic behavior of the Casimir-Polder potential is investigated at large and small separations compared to the wavelength of the dominant atomic transitions. We show that the conical defect may be used to control the strength and the sign of the Casimir-Polder force.

Thermal Casimir effect for neutrino and electromagnetic fields in closed Friedmann cosmological model

We calculate the total internal energy, total energy density and pressure, and the free energy for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields in Einstein and closed Friedmann cosmological models. The Casimir contributions to all these quantities are separated. The asymptotic expressions for both the total internal energy and free energy, and for the Casimir contributions to them are found in the limiting cases of low and high temperatures. It is shown that the neutrino field does not possess a classical limit at high temperature. As for the electromagnetic field, we demonstrate that the total internal energy has the classical contribution and the Casimir internal energy goes to the classical limit at high temperature. The respective Casimir free energy contains both linear and logarithmic terms with respect to the temperature. The total and Casimir entropies for the neutrino and electromagnetic fields at low temperature are also calculated and shown to be in agreement with the Nernst heat theorem.
