Chiral Anomaly Beyond Lorentz Invariance

The chiral anomaly in the context of an extended standard model with minimal Lorentz invariance violation is studied. Taking into account bounds from measurements of the speed of light, we argue that the chiral anomaly and its consequences are general results valid even beyond the relativistic symmetry.

Vortices in U(1) Noncommutative Gauge Fields

Charged vortex solutions for noncommutative Maxwell-Higgs model in 3+1 dimensions are found. We show that the stability of these vortex solutions is spoiled out for some, large enough, noncommutativity parameter. A non topological charge, however, is induced by noncommutative effects.

Krein's Formula And Heat-Kernel Expansion For Some Differential Operators With A Regular Singularity

We get a generalization of Krein's formula -which relates the resolvents of different selfadjoint extensions of a differential operator with regular coefficients- to the non-regular case $A=-\partial_x^2+(ν^2-1/4)/x^2+V(x)$, where $0<ν<1$ and $V(x)$ is an analytic function of $x\in\mathbb{R}^+$ bounded from below. We show that the trace of the heat-kernel $e^{-tA}$ admits a non-standard small-t asymptotic expansion which contains, in general, integer powers of $t^ν$. In particular, these powers are present for those selfadjoint extensions of $A$ which are characterized by boundary conditions that break the local formal scale invariance at the singularity.

Vortices, Infrared effects and Lorentz Invariance Violation

The Yang-Mills theory with noncommutative fields is constructed following Hamiltonian and lagrangean methods. This modification of the standard Yang-Mills theory shed light on the confinement mechanism viewed as a Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) effect. The modified Yang-Mills theory contain in addition to the standard contribution, the term $θ^με_{μνρλ} (A^νF^{ρλ} + {2/3} A_νA_ρA_λ)$ where $θ_μ$ is a given space-like constant vector with canonical dimension of energy. The $A_μ$ field rescaling and the choice $θ_μ=(0,0,0,θ)$, one can show that the modified Yang-Mills theory in 3+1 dimensions can be made equivalent to a Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in 2+1 dimensions if one consider only heavy fermionic excitations. Thus, the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory in 2+1 dimensions is a codified way of ${QCD}$ that include only heavy quarks. The classical solutions of the modified Yang-Mills theory for the SU(2) gauge group are confining ones.

Self-adjoint extensions and SUSY breaking in Supersymmetric Quantum Mechanics

We consider the self-adjoint extensions (SAE) of the symmetric supercharges and Hamiltonian for a model of SUSY Quantum Mechanics in $\mathbb{R}^+$ with a singular superpotential. We show that only for two particular SAE, whose domains are scale invariant, the algebra of N=2 SUSY is realized, one with manifest SUSY and the other with spontaneously broken SUSY. Otherwise, only the N=1 SUSY algebra is obtained, with spontaneously broken SUSY and non degenerate energy spectrum.

On the resolvent and spectral functions of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity

We consider the resolvent of a second order differential operator with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents unusual powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity. The consequences for the pole structure of the $ζ$-function, and the small-$t$ asymptotic expansion of the heat-kernel, are also discussed.

Unusual poles of the $ζ$-functions for some regular singular differential operators

We consider the resolvent of a system of first order differential operators with a regular singularity, admitting a family of self-adjoint extensions. We find that the asymptotic expansion for the resolvent in the general case presents powers of $λ$ which depend on the singularity, and can take even irrational values. The consequences for the pole structure of the corresponding $ζ$ and $η$-functions are also discussed.

Testing spatial noncommutativiy via the Aharonov-Bohm effect

The possibility of detecting noncommutative space relics is analyzed using the Aharonov-Bohm effect. We show that, if space is noncommutative, the holonomy receives non-trivial kinematical corrections that will produce a diffraction pattern even when the magnetic flux is quantized. The scattering problem is also formulated, and the differential cross section is calculated. Our results can be extrapolated to high energy physics and the bound $θ\sim [ 10 {TeV}]^{-2}$ is found. If this bound holds, then noncommutative effects could be explored in scattering experiments measuring differential cross sections for small angles. The bound state Aharonov- Bohm effect is also discussed.

Pole structure of the Hamiltonian $ζ$-function for a singular potential

We study the pole structure of the $ζ$-function associated to the Hamiltonian $H$ of a quantum mechanical particle living in the half-line $\mathbf{R}^+$, subject to the singular potential $g x^{-2}+x^2$. We show that $H$ admits nontrivial self-adjoint extensions (SAE) in a given range of values of the parameter $g$. The $ζ$-functions of these operators present poles which depend on $g$ and, in general, do not coincide with half an integer (they can even be irrational). The corresponding residues depend on the SAE considered.

Boundary dynamics and multiple reflection expansion for Robin boundary conditions

In the presence of a boundary interaction, Neumann boundary conditions should be modified to contain a function S of the boundary fields: (\nabla_N +S)ϕ=0. Information on quantum boundary dynamics is then encoded in the $S$-dependent part of the effective action. In the present paper we extend the multiple reflection expansion method to the Robin boundary conditions mentioned above, and calculate the heat kernel and the effective action (i) for constant S, (ii) to the order S^2 with an arbitrary number of tangential derivatives. Some applications to symmetry breaking effects, tachyon condensation and brane world are briefly discussed.

Casimir energy for spherically symmetric dispersive dielectric media

We consider the vacuum energy of the electromagnetic field in the background of spherically symmetric dielectrics, subject to a cut-off frequency in the dispersion relations. The effect of this frequency dependent boundary condition between media is described in terms of the {\it incomplete} $ζ$-functions of the problem. The use of the Debye asymptotic expansion for Bessel functions allows to determine the dominant (volume, area, ...) terms in the Casimir energy. The application of these expressions to the case of a gas bubble immersed in water is discussed, and results consistent with Schwinger's proposal about the role the Casimir energy plays in sonoluminescence are found. Hamiltonian self-adjoint extensions for (2+1)-dimensional Dirac particles

We study the stationary problem of a charged Dirac particle in (2+1) dimensions in the presence of a uniform magnetic field B and a singular magnetic tube of flux Phi = 2 pi kappa/e. The rotational invariance of this configuration implies that the subspaces of definite angular momentum l+1/2 are invariant under the action of the Hamiltonian H. We show that, for l different from the integer part of kappa, the restriction of H to these subspaces, H_l is essentially self-adjoint, while for l equal to the integer part of kappa, H_l admits a one-parameter family of self-adjoint extensions (SAE). In the later case, the functions in the domain of H_l are singular (but square-integrable) at the origin, their behavior being dictated by the value of the parameter gamma that identifies the SAE. We also determine the spectrum of the Hamiltonian as a function of kappa and gamma, as well as its closure.

Multiple reflection expansion and heat kernel coefficients

We propose the multiple reflection expansion as a tool for the calculation of heat kernel coefficients. As an example, we give the coefficients for a sphere as a finite sum over reflections, obtaining as a byproduct a relation between the coefficients for Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Further, we calculate the heat kernel coefficients for the most general matching conditions on the surface of a sphere, including those cases corresponding to the presence of delta and delta prime background potentials. In the latter case, the multiple reflection expansion is shown to be non-convergent.

Divergencies in the Casimir energy for a medium with realistic ultraviolet behavior

We consider a dielectric medium with an ultraviolet behavior as it follows from the Drude model. Compared with dilute models, this has the advantage that, for large frequencies, two different media behave the same way. As a result one expects the Casimir energy to contain less divergencies than for the dilute media approximation. We show that the Casimir energy of a spherical dielectric ball contains just one divergent term, a volume one, which can be renormalized by introducing a contact term analogous to the volume energy counterterm needed in bag models. Casimir energy for a scalar field with a frequency dependent boundary condition

We consider the vacuum energy for a scalar field subject to a frequency dependent boundary condition. The effect of a frequency cut-off is described in terms of an {\it incomplete} $ζ$-function. The use of the Debye asymptotic expansion for Bessel functions allows to determine the dominant (volume, area, >...) terms in the Casimir energy. The possible interest of this kind of models for dielectric media (and its application to sonoluminescence) is also discussed.

Finite density and temperature in hybrid bag models

We introduce the chemical potential in a system of two-flavored massless fermions in a chiral bag by imposing boundary conditions in the Euclidean time direction. We express the fermionic mean number in terms of a functional trace involving the Green function of the boundary value problem, which is studied analytically. Numerical evaluations for the fermionic number are presented.

Global boundary conditions for the Dirac operator

Ellipticity of boundary value problems is characterized in terms of the Calderon projector. The presence of topological obstructions for the chiral Dirac operator under local boundary conditions in even dimension is discussed. Functional determinants for Dirac operators on manifolds with boundary are considered. The functional determinant for a Dirac operator on a bidimensional disk, in the presence of an Abelian gauge field and subject to global boundary conditions of the type introduced by Atiyah-Patodi-Singer, is evaluated. The relationship with the index theorem is also commented.
