Theory of expansion and compression of polymeric materials

We extend classical Flory-Rehner theory for the expansion and compression of porous materials such as cross-linked polymer networks. The theory includes volume exclusion, affinity with the solvent, and finite stretching of the polymer chains. We also modify this equilibrium theory -- that applies to equal expansion of a material in all directions -- to the situation that a material can only expand in a single direction, as is the case when a thin layer is tightly bound to a support structure. We extend this equilibrium model to the case that a pressure is applied across such a thin layer of the polymer material, for instance a membrane, and liquid flows across this layer. The theory describes how in the direction of liquid flow the membrane is increasingly compacted (becomes less porous), and the more so at higher applied pressures. We provide results of example calculations for a thick membrane with significant changes in compaction across its thickness, and a thin membrane for which compaction due to flow is minor. In the last section we model the dynamics of the change of size of a porous material in time after a step change in the solvent-polymer attraction parameter.

CLMM: a LSST-DESC Cluster weak Lensing Mass Modeling library for cosmology

We present the v1.0 release of CLMM, an open source Python library for the estimation of the weak lensing masses of clusters of galaxies. CLMM is designed as a standalone toolkit of building blocks to enable end-to-end analysis pipeline validation for upcoming cluster cosmology analyses such as the ones that will be performed by the LSST-DESC. Its purpose is to serve as a flexible, easy-to-install and easy-to-use interface for both weak lensing simulators and observers and can be applied to real and mock data to study the systematics affecting weak lensing mass reconstruction. At the core of CLMM are routines to model the weak lensing shear signal given the underlying mass distribution of galaxy clusters and a set of data operations to prepare the corresponding data vectors. The theoretical predictions rely on existing software, used as backends in the code, that have been thoroughly tested and cross-checked. Combined, theoretical predictions and data can be used to constrain the mass distribution of galaxy clusters as demonstrated in a suite of example Jupyter Notebooks shipped with the software and also available in the extensive online documentation.

Strain tuning of optical emission energy and polarization in monolayer and bilayer MoS2

We use micro-Raman and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy at 300K to investigate the influence of uniaxial tensile strain on the vibrational and optoelectronic properties of monolayer and bilayer MoS2 on a flexible substrate. The initially degenerate E^1_{2g} Raman mode is split into a doublet as a direct consequence of the strain applied to MoS2 through Van der Waals coupling at the sample-substrate interface. We observe a strong shift of the direct band gap of 48meV/(% of strain) for the monolayer and 46meV/% for the bilayer, whose indirect gap shifts by 86meV/%. We find a strong decrease of the PL polarization linked to optical valley initialization for both monolayer and bilayer samples, indicating that scattering to the spin-degenerate Gamma valley plays a key role.

Quantum discord: "discord" between the whole and its constituent

Quantum discord, a measure of quantum correlation beyond entanglement, is initially defined as the discord between two classically equivalent while quantum discordant definitions of mutual information. In this paper, we report some new interpretations of discord which rely on the differences between measurement induced effects on the local measured system and the whole system. Specifically, with proper quantitative definitions introduced in [Buscemi, Hayashi and Horodecki, Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 2210504 (2008)], we find that quantum discord can be interpreted as the differences of measurement induced disturbance or information gain on the local measured system and on the whole system. Combined with previous similar results based on measurement induced entanglement and decoherence, our results provide a unified view on quantum discord.

The two-qubit controlled-phase gate based on cross-phase modulation in GaAs/AlGaAs semiconductor quantum wells

We present a realization of two-qubit controlled-phase gate, based on the linear and nonlinear properties of the probe and signal optical pulses in an asymmetric GaAs/AlGaAs double quantum wells. It is shown that, in the presence of cross-phase modulation, a giant cross-Kerr nonlinearity and mutually matched group velocities of the probe and signal optical pulses can be achieved while realizing the suppression of linear and self-Kerr optical absorption synchronously. These characteristics serve to exhibit an all-optical two-qubit controlled-phase gate within efficiently controllable photon-photon entanglement by semiconductor mediation. In addition, by using just polarizing beam splitters and half-wave plates, we propose a practical experimental scheme to discriminate the maximally entangled polarization state of two-qubit through distinguishing two out of the four Bell states. This proposal potentially enables the realization of solid states mediated all-optical quantum computation and information processing.

Dirac equation for superluminal neutrinos and mass matrix

The superluminal is reported in OPERA neutrino experiment (arXiv:1109.4897v2), this result is consistent with previous MINOS experiment about neutrino velocity (Phys. Rev. D 76, 072005 (2007)). Here we propose a Dirac equation of tachyon for superluminal neutrino in which the mass matrix is anti-hermitian. Additionally we find that this anti-hermitian mass matrix which is responsible for superluminal can only be for neutrinos, while other results of Standard Model are unchanged. In case that Lorentz invariant is remained, the masses of neutrinos are estimated based on available data of experiments.

Testing quantum entanglement with local measurement

We propose to detect quantum entanglement by a condition of local measurments. We find that this condition can detect efficiently the pure entangled states for both discrete and continuous variable systems. It does not depend on interference of decoherence from noise and detection loss in some systems, which allows a loophole-free test in real experiments. In particular, it is a necessary condition for the violation of some generalized Bell inequalities.

Unbounded quantum Fisher information in two-path interferometry with finite photon number

The minimum error of unbiased parameter estimation is quantified by the quantum Fisher information in accordance to the Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound. We indicate that only superposed NOON states by simultaneous measurements can achieve the maximum quantum Fisher information with form $<\hat{N}^{2}>$ for a given photon number distribution by a POVM in linear two-path interferometer phase measurement. We present a series of specified superposed states with infinite quantum Fisher information but with finite average photon numbers. The advantage of this unbounded quantum Fisher information will be beneficial to many applications in quantum technology.

The stabilizer dimension of graph states

The entanglement properties of a multiparty pure state are invariant under local unitary transformations. The stabilizer dimension of a multiparty pure state characterizes how many types of such local unitary transformations existing for the state. We find that the stabilizer dimension of an $n$-qubit ($n\ge 2$) graph state is associated with three specific configurations in its graph. We further show that the stabilizer dimension of an $n$-qubit ($n\ge 3$) graph state is equal to the degree of irreducible two-qubit correlations in the state.

Conformal oxide coating of Carbon Nanotubes

The International Roadmap for Ferroelectric Memories requires three-dimensional integration of high-dielectric materials onto metal interconnects or bottom electrodes by 2010. We report the first integration of high-dielectric oxide films onto carbon nanotube electrodes with an aim of ultra-high integration density of FeRAMs (Tb/in2).

Quantum cloning of identical mixed qubits

Quantum cloning of two identical mixed qubits $ρ\otimes ρ$ is studied. We propose the quantum cloning transformations not only for the triplet (symmetric) states but also for the singlet (antisymmetric) state. We can copy these two identical mixed qubits to M (M>2) copies. This quantum cloning machine is optimal in the sense that the shrinking factor between the input and the output single qubit achieves the upper bound. The result shows that we can copy two identical mixed qubits with the same quality as that of two identical pure states.

Threshold Error Penalty for Fault Tolerant Computation with Nearest Neighbour Communication

The error threshold for fault tolerant quantum computation with concatenated encoding of qubits is penalized by internal communication overhead. Many quantum computation proposals rely on nearest-neighbour communication, which requires excess gate operations. For a qubit stripe with a width of L+1 physical qubits implementing L levels of concatenation, we find that the error threshold of 2.1x10^-5 without any communication burden is reduced to 1.2x10^-7 when gate errors are the dominant source of error. This ~175X penalty in error threshold translates to an ~13X penalty in the amplitude and timing of gate operation control pulses.

A simple way to detect the state transition caused by the nondiagonal abelian Berry phase

In a nondegenerate syste, the abelian Berry's phase will never cause transitions among the Hamiltonian's eigenstate. However, in a degenerate syatem, it is well known that the state transition can be caused by the non-abelian Berry phase. Actually, in a such a system, the phase factor is not always nonabelian. Even in the case that the phase is a nondiagonal matrix, it still can be an abelian phase and can cause the state transitions. We then propose a simple scheme to detect such an effect of the Berry phase to the degenerate states by using the optical entangled pair state. In this scheme, we need not control any external parameters during the quantum state evolution.
