One-dimensional Bose-Hubbard model with local three-body interactions

We employ the (dynamical) density matrix renormalization group technique to investigate the ground-state properties of the Bose-Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor transfer amplitudes t and local two-body and three-body repulsion of strength U and W, respectively. We determine the phase boundaries between the Mott-insulating and superfluid phases for the lowest two Mott lobes from the chemical potentials. We calculate the tips of the Mott lobes from the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid parameter and confirm the positions of the Kosterlitz-Thouless points from the von Neumann entanglement entropy. We find that physical quantities in the second Mott lobe such as the gap and the dynamical structure factor scale almost perfectly in t/(U+W), even close to the Mott transition. Strong-coupling perturbation theory shows that there is no true scaling but deviations from it are quantitatively small in the strong-coupling limit. This observation should remain true in higher dimensions and for not too large attractive three-body interactions.

Effects of disorder and contacts on transport through graphene nanoribbons

We study the transport of charge carriers through finite graphene structures. The use of numerical exact kernel polynomial and Green function techniques allows us to treat actual sized samples beyond the Dirac-cone approximation. Particularly we investigate disordered nanoribbons, normal-conductor/graphene interfaces and normal-conductor/graphene/normal-conductor junctions with a focus on the behavior of the local density of states, single-particle spectral function, optical conductivity and conductance. We demonstrate that the contacts and bulk disorder will have a major impact on the electronic properties of graphene-based devices.

Dynamics of the Dicke model close to the classical limit

We study the dynamical properties of the Dicke model for increasing spin length, as the system approaches the limit of a classical spin. First, we describe the emergence of collective excitations above the groundstate that converge to the coupled spin-oscillator oscillations found in the classical limit. The corresponding Green functions reveal quantum dynamical signatures close to the superradiant quantum phase transition. Second, we identify signatures of classical quasi-periodic orbits in the quantum time evolution using numerical time-propagation of the wave function. The resulting phase space plots are compared to the classical trajectories. We complete our study with the analysis of individual eigenstates close to the quasi-periodic orbits.

Multipartite entangled light from driven microcavities

The generation and the characterization of multipartite entangled light is an important and challenging task in quantum optics. In this paper the entanglement properties of the light emitted from a planar semiconductor microcavity are studied. The intracavity scattering dynamics leads to the emission of light that is described by a fourpartite W state. Its multipartite correlations are identified by using the method of entanglement witnesses. Entanglement conditions are derived, which are based on a general witness constructed from W states. The results can be used to detect entanglement of light that propagates through lossy and even turbulent media.

Nonequilibrium quantum fluctuation relations for harmonic systems in nonthermal environments

We formulate exact generalized nonequilibrium fluctuation relations for the quantum mechanical harmonic oscillator coupled to multiple harmonic baths. Each of the different baths is prepared in its own individual (in general nonthermal) state. Starting from the exact solution for the oscillator dynamics we study fluctuations of the oscillator position as well as of the energy current through the oscillator under general nonequilibrium conditions. In particular, we formulate a fluctuation-dissipation relation for the oscillator position autocorrelation function that generalizes the standard result for the case of a single bath at thermal equilibrium. Moreover, we show that the generating function for the position operator fullfills a generalized Gallavotti-Cohen-like relation. For the energy transfer through the oscillator, we determine the average energy current together with the current fluctuations. Finally, we discuss the generalization of the cumulant generating function for the energy transfer to nonthermal bath preparations.

Exciton condensation due to electron-phonon interaction

We show that the coupling to vibrational degrees of freedom can drive a semimetal excitonic-insulator quantum phase transition in an one-dimensional two-band f-c electron system at zero temperature. The insulating state typifies an excitonic condensate accompanied by a finite lattice distortion. Using the projector-based renormalization method we analyze the ground-state and spectral properties of the interacting electron-phonon model at half-filling. In particular we calculate the momentum dependence of the excitonic order parameter function and determine the finite critical interaction strength for the metal-insulator transition to appear. The electron spectral function reveals the strong hybridization of f- and c-electron states and the opening of a single-particle excitation gap. The phonon spectral function indicates that the phonon mode involved in the transition softens (hardens) in the adiabatic (non-adiabatic and extreme anti-adiabatic) phonon frequency regime.

Optical signatures of the Charge of a Dielectric Particle in a Plasma

With an eye on dust particles immersed into an ionized gas, we study the effect of a negative charge on the scattering of light by a dielectric particle with a strong transverse optical phonon resonance in the dielectric constant. Surplus electrons alter the scattering behavior of the particle by their phonon limited conductivity in the surface layer (negative electron affinity) or in the bulk of the particle (positive electron affinity). We identify a charge-dependent increase of the extinction efficiency for low frequencies, a shift of the extinction resonance above the transverse optical phonon frequency, and a rapid variation of the polarization angles over this resonance. These effects could be used for non-invasive optical measurements of the charge of the particle.

Chiral charge order in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$: importance of lattice degrees of freedom

We address the question of the origin of the recently discovered chiral property of the charge-density-wave phase in 1$T$-TiSe$_2$ which so far lacks a microscopic understanding. We argue that the lattice degrees of freedom seems to be crucial for this novel phenomenon. We motivate a theoretical model that takes into account one valence and three conduction bands, a strongly screened Coulomb interaction between the electrons, as well as the coupling of the electrons to a transverse optical phonon mode. The Falicov-Kimball model extended in this way possesses a charge-density-wave state at low temperatures, which is accompanied by a periodic lattice distortion. The charge ordering is driven by a lattice deformation and electron-hole pairing (excitonic) instability in combination. We show that both electron-phonon interaction and phonon-phonon interaction must be taken into account at least up to quartic order in the lattice displacement to achieve a stable chiral charge order. The chiral property is exhibited in the ionic displacements. Furthermore, we provide the ground-state phase diagram of the model and give an estimate of the electron-electron and electron-phonon interaction constants for 1$T$-TiSe$_2$.

Exact-diagonalization study of exciton condensation in electron bilayers

We report on small-cluster exact-diagonalization calculations which prove the formation of electron-hole pairs (excitons) as prerequisite for spontaneous interlayer phase coherence in bilayer systems described by the extended Falicov-Kimball model. Evaluating the anomalous Green's function and momentum distribution function of the pairs, and thereby analyzing the dependence of the exciton binding energy, condensation amplitude, and coherence length on the Coulomb interaction strength, we demonstrate a crossover between a BCS-like electron-hole pairing transition and a Bose-Einstein condensation of tightly bound preformed excitons. We furthermore show that a mass imbalance between electrons and holes tends to suppress the condensation of excitons.

Mie scattering analog in graphene: lensing, particle confinement, and depletion of Klein tunneling

Guided by the analogy to Mie scattering of light on small particles we show that the propagation of a Dirac-electron wave in graphene can be manipulated by a circular gated region acting as a quatum dot. Large dots enable electron lensing, while for smaller dots resonant scattering entails electron confinement in quasibound states. Forward scattering and Klein tunneling can be almost switched off for small dots by a Fano resonance arising from the interference between resonant scattering and the background partition.

Equilibration and thermalization of the dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator in a non-thermal environment

We study the dissipative quantum harmonic oscillator with general non-thermal preparations of the harmonic oscillator bath. The focus is on equilibration of the oscillator in the long-time limit and the additional requirements for thermalization. Our study is based on the exact solution of the microscopic model obtained by means of operator equations of motion, which provides us with the time evolution of the central oscillator density matrix in terms of the propagating function. We find a hierarchy of conditions for thermalization, together with the relation of the asymptotic temperature to the energy distribution in the initial bath state. We discuss the presence and absence of equilibration for the example of an inhomogeneous chain of harmonic oscillators, and illustrate the general findings about thermalization for the non-thermal environment that results from a quench.

Anderson localization versus charge-density-wave formation in disordered electron systems

We study the interplay of disorder and interaction effects including bosonic degrees of freedom in the framework of a generic one-dimensional transport model, the Anderson-Edwards model. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique, we extract the localization length and the renormalization of the Tomonaga Luttinger liquid parameter from the charge-structure factor by a elaborate sample-average finite-size scaling procedure. The properties of the Anderson localized state can be described in terms of scaling relations of the metallic phase without disorder. We analyze how disorder competes with the charge-density-wave correlations triggered by the bosons and give evidence that strong disorder will destroy the charge-ordered state.

Numerical time propagation of quantum systems in radiation fields

Atoms, molecules or excitonic quasiparticles, for which excitations are induced by external radiation fields and energy is dissipated through radiative decay, are examples of driven open quantum systems. We explain the use of commutator-free exponential time-propagators for the numerical solution of the associated Schrödinger or master equations with a time-dependent Hamilton operator. These time-propagators are based on the Magnus series but avoid the computation of commutators, which makes them suitable for the efficient propagation of systems with a large number of degrees of freedom. We present an optimized fourth order propagator and demonstrate its efficiency in comparison to the direct Runge-Kutta computation. As an illustrative example we consider the parametrically driven dissipative Dicke model, for which we calculate the periodic steady state and the optical emission spectrum.

Phonon-affected steady-state transport through molecular quantum dots

We consider transport through a vibrating molecular quantum dot contacted to macroscopic leads acting as charge reservoirs. In the equilibrium and nonequilibrium regime, we study the formation of a polaron-like transient state at the quantum dot for all ratios of the dot-lead coupling to the energy of the local phonon mode. We show that the polaronic renormalization of the dot-lead coupling is a possible mechanism for negative differential conductance. Moreover, the effective dot level follows one of the lead chemical potentials to enhance resonant transport, causing novel features in the inelastic tunneling signal. In the linear response regime, we investigate the impact of the electron-phonon interaction on the thermoelectrical properties of the quantum dot device.

Phase diagram of bilayer electron-hole plasmas

We investigate exciton bound-state formation and crystallization effects in two-dimensional electron-hole bilayers. Performing unbiased path integral Monte Carlo simulations all quantum and Coulomb correlation effects are treated on first principles. We analyze diverse pair distribution functions in dependence on the layer separation, particle density and hole-to-electron mass ratio and derive a schematic phase diagram for the neutral mass-asymmetric bilayer system. Our simulations reveal a great variety of possible phases namely an exciton gas, an exciton crystal, an electron-hole liquid and a hole crystal embedded in an electron gas.

Mie scattering by a charged dielectric particle

We study for a dielectric particle the effect of surplus electrons on the anomalous scattering of light arising from the transverse optical phonon resonance in the particle's dielectric constant. Excess electrons affect the polarizability of the particle by their phonon-limited conductivity, either in a surface layer (for negative electron affinity) or the conduction band (for positive electron affinity). We demonstrate that surplus electrons shift an extinction resonance in the infrared. This offers an optical way to measure the charge of the particle and thus to use it in a plasma as a minimally invasive electric probe.

Strongly entangled light from planar microcavities

The emission of entangled light from planar semiconductor microcavities is studied and the entanglement properties are analyzed and quantified. Phase-matching of the intra-cavity scattering dynamics for multiple pump beams or pulses, together with the coupling to external radiation, leads to the emission of a manifold of entangled photon pairs. A decomposition of the emitted photons into two parties leads to a strong entanglement of the resulting bipartite system. For the quantification of the entanglement, the Schmidt number of the system is determined by the construction of Schmidt number witnesses. It is analyzed to which extend the resources of the originally strongly entangled light field are diminished by dephasing in propagation channels.

Phase separation in the Edwards model

The nature of charge transport within a correlated background medium can be described by spinless fermions coupled to bosons in the model introduced by Edwards. Combining numerical density matrix renormalization group and analytical projector-based renormalization methods we explore the ground-state phase diagram of the Edwards model in one dimension. Below a critical boson frequency any long-range order disappears and the system becomes metallic. If the charge carriers are coupled to slow quantum bosons the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid is attractive and finally makes room for a phase separated state, just as in the t-J model. The phase boundary separating repulsive from the attractive Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid is determined from long-wavelength charge correlations, whereas fermion segregation is indicated by a vanishing inverse compressibility. On approaching phase separation the photoemission spectra develop strong anomalies.
