Neutron imaging with a Micromegas detector

The micropattern gaseous detector Micromegas has been developed for several years in Saclay and presents good performance for neutron detection. A prototype for neutron imaging has been designed and new results obtained in thermal neutron beams are presented. Based on previous results demonstrating a good 1D spatial resolution, a tomographic image of a multiwire cable has been performed using a 1D Micromegas prototype. The number of pillars supporting the micromesh is too large and leads to local losses of efficiency that distort the tomographic reconstruction. Nevertheless, this first tomographic image achieved with this kind of detector is very encouraging. The next worthwhile development for neutron imaging is to achieve a bi-dimensional detector, which is presented in the second part of this study. The purpose of measurements was to investigate various operational parameters to optimize the spatial resolution. Through these measurements the optimum spatial resolution has been found to be around 160 microns (standard deviation) using Micromegas operating in double amplification mode. Several 2D imaging tests have been carried out. Some of these results have revealed fabrication defects that occurred during the manufacture of Micromegas and that are limiting the full potential of the present neutron imaging system.

The Cauchy Problem for the Einstein Equations

Various aspects of the Cauchy problem for the Einstein equations are surveyed, with the emphasis on local solutions of the evolution equations. Particular attention is payed to giving a clear explanation of conceptual issues which arise in this context. The question of producing reduced systems of equations which are hyperbolic is examined in detail and some new results on that subject are presented. Relevant background from the theory of partial differential equations is also explained at some length

Bondi-type systems near space-like infinity and the calculation of the NP-constants

We relate Bondi systems near space-like infinity to another type of gauge conditions. While the former are based on null infinity, the latter are defined in terms of Einstein propagation, the conformal structure, and data on some Cauchy hypersurface. For a certain class of time symmetric space-times we study an expansion which allows us to determine the behavior of various fields arising in Bondi systems in the region of space-time where null infinity touches space-like infinity. The coefficients of these expansions can be read off from the initial data. We obtain in particular expressions for the constants discovered by Newman and Penrose (NP-constants) in terms of the initial data. For this purpose we calculate a certain expansion up to 3rd order.
