Magic squares of subtraction of Adam Adamandy Kochański

The problem of the construction of magic squares occupied many mathematicians of the 17th century. The Polish Jesuit and polymath Adam Adamandy Kochański studied this subject too, and in 1686 he published a paper in Acta Eruditorum titled "Considerationes quaedam circa Quadrata et Cubos Magicos". In that paper he proposed a novel type of magic square, where in every row, column and diagonal, if the entries are sorted in decreasing order, the difference between the sum of entries with odd indices and those with even indices is constant. He called them \emph{quadrata subtractionis}, meaning squares of subtraction. He gave examples of such squares of orders 4 and 5, and challenged readers to produce an example of square of order 6. We discuss the likely method which he used to produce squares of order 5, and show that it can be generalized to arbitrary odd orders. We also show how to construct doubly-even squares. At the end, we show an example of a square of order 6, sought by Kochański, and discuss the enumeration of squares of subtraction.

Explorations of ternary cellular automata and ternary density classification problems

While binary nearest-neighbour cellar automata (CA) have been studied in detail and from many different angles, the same cannot be said about ternary (three-state) CA rules. We present some results of our explorations of a small subset of the vast space of ternary rules, namely rules possessing additive invariants. We first enumerate rules with four different additive invariants, and then we investigate if any of them could be used to construct a two-rule solution of generalized density classification problem (DCP). We show that neither simple nor absolute classification is possible with a pair of ternary rules where the first rule is all-conserving and the second one is reducible to two states. Similar negative result holds for another version of DCP we propose: symmetric interval-wise DCP. Finally we show an example of a pair of rules which solve non-symmetric interval-wise DCP for initial configurations containing at least one zero.

Critical behavior of a cellular automaton highway traffic model

We derive the critical behavior of a CA traffic flow model using an order parameter breaking the symmetry of the jam-free phase. Random braking appears to be the symmetry-breaking field conjugate to the order parameter. For $v_{\max}=2$, we determine the values of the critical exponents $β$, $γ$ and $δ$ using an order-3 cluster approximation and computer simulations. These critical exponents satisfy a scaling relation, which can be derived assuming that the order parameter is a generalized homogeneous function of $|ρ-ρ_c|$ and p in the vicinity of the phase transition point.
