Field Strength Correlators and Dual Effective Dynamics in QCD

We establish a relation between the two-point field strength correlator in QCD and the dual field propagator of an effective dual Abelian Higgs model describing the infrared behaviour of QCD. We find an analytic approximation to the dual field propagator without sources and in presence of quark sources. In the latter situation we also obtain an expression for the static $q \bar{q}$ potential. Our derivation sheds some light on the dominance and phenomenological relevance of the two-point field strength correlator.

Direct extraction of the chiral quark condensate and bounds on the light quark masses

We select sum rules from which one can extract directly reliable limits on the size of the chiral symmetry breaking light quark condensate $<\barψψ>$. Combined results from the nucleon and $B^*-B$ mass-splitting sum rules give a result compatible with the standard value: $<\barψψ> (1 GeV) \simeq (-229 MeV)^3$, through the determinations of the quark-gluon mixed condensate. The vector form factor of the $D\rar K^*lν$ semi-leptonic decay leads to the range $0.6\leq <\barψψ> (-229 MeV)^3 \leq 1.5$. The upper limit combined with the Gell-Mann-Oakes-Renner (GMOR) relation implies the interesting lower bound on the sum of light quark masses:$(m_u+m_d) (1 GeV) \geq$ 9.4 MeV, which combined with the ratio of light quark masses from chiral perturbation theory leads to $m_s (1 GeV) \geq (121\pm 12)$ MeV. The lower limit combined with the positivity of the $m_q^2$ contribution to the GMOR relation leads to the upper bound : $(m_u+m_d) (1 GeV) \leq$ 15.7 MeV, which is independent on the nature of chiral symmetry breaking.

Few-body aspects of non-perturbative QCD

After some general remarks on non-perturbative QCD I present shortly models which lead to a color-electric flux tube formation. The implications of such a flux tube formation especially on high energy scattering are discussed.

Diffractive color-dipole nucleon scattering

We determine the diffractive scattering amplitude of a color-dipole on a nucleon using a non-perturbative model of QCD which contains only parameters taken from low-energy physics. This allows to relate specific features of the confinement mechanisms with diffractive electro-production processes and structure functions. The agreement with phenomenological data is satisfactory.

Nonperturbative γ^* p Interaction in the Diffractive Regime

One of the challenging aspects of electroproduction at high-energy is the understanding of the transition from real photons to virtual photons in the GeV^2 region. We study inclusive electroproduction on the proton at small x_B using a nonperturbative dipole-proton cross section calculated from the gauge invariant gluon field correlators as input. By quark-hadron duality, we construct a photon light cone wave function which links the ``hadronic'' behavior at small Q^2 to the ``perturbative'' behavior at large Q^2. It contains quark masses which implement the transition from constituent quarks at low Q^2 to current quarks at high Q^2. Our calculation gives a good description of the structure function at fixed energy for Q^2<=10 GeV^2. Indications for a chiral transition may already have been seen in the photon-proton cross section.

Non-perturbative correlation masses in the hot electroweak phase

The effective action describing the long range fluctuations in the high temperature phase of the electroweak standard theory is a strongly coupled SU(2)-Higgs-model in three dimensions. We outline in detail a model in which the spatial correlation scales in this phase are calculated as inverse relativistic bound state masses. Selection rules for these states are derived. The correlation masses are calculated by evaluating the bound state Green's function. The scalar-scalar-potential and its influence on the masses is investigated. The predictions for the correlation masses agree very well with the lattice data available now.

Vector meson leptoproduction and nonperturbative gluon fluctuations in QCD

We present a nonperturbative QCD calculation of diffractive vector meson production in virtual photon nucleon scattering at high energy. We use the nonperturbative model of the stochastic QCD vacuum which yields linear confinement and makes specific predictions for the dependence of high-energy scattering cross sections on the hadron size. Using light cone wave functions of the photon and vector mesons, we calculate electroproduction cross sections for $ρ$, $ω$, $ϕ$ and $J/ψ$. We emphasize the behavior of specific observables such as the ratio of longitudinal to transverse production cross section and the t-dependence of the differential cross section.

Nucleon Structure and High Energy Scattering

If the pomeron is generated by a two gluon exchange there is no a priori reason for a drastic suppression of three gluon exchange with negative parity and charge parity. This would lead to an unacceptably large difference between $p\,p$ and $p\, \bar{p}$ scattering. It is shown that a natural suppression of the $C$=$P$=--1 contribution to high energy scattering is given by a cluster structure of the nucleon.

Bound States in the Hot Electroweak Phase

The high temperature phase of the electroweak standard theory is described by a strongly coupled SU(2)-Higgs-model in three dimensions. As in the Abbott-Farhi-model Higgs and W-boson are low lying bound states. Using a method by Simonov based on the Feynman-Schwinger representation of correlators we calculate the masses of these states. Our results are compared with lattice masses.

STRING FORMATION IN THE MODEL OF THE STOCHASTIC VACUUM AND CONSISTENCY WITH LOW ENERGY THEOREMS

We re-derive and discuss two low energy theorems which relate the potential of a static quark-antiquark pair with the total energy and action stored in the flux tube between the sources. In lattice QCD these relations are known as Michael's sum-rules, but we give an essential correction to one of them. Then we relate the low energy theorems to the virial theorem for a heavy quark-antiquark bound state. Finally we compare the results for the flux tube formation, which have been calculated in the model of the stochastic vacuum, with the low energy theorems and obtain consistency. From this we conclude that the model describes the non perturbative gluon dynamics of QCD at a renormalization scale, where the strong coupling constant is given by $\al_s = 0.57$.

Non-Perturbative QCD Treatment of High-Energy Hadron-Hadron Scattering

Total cross-sections and logarithmic slopes of the elastic scattering cross-sections for different hadronic processes are calculated in the framework of the model of the stochastic vacuum. The relevant parameters of this model, a correlation length and the gluon condensate, are determined from scattering data, and found to be in very good agreement with values coming from completely different sources of information. A parameter-free relation is given between total cross-sections and slope parameters, which is shown to be remarkably valid up to the highest energies for which data exist.

Semileptonic Inclusive B--Decays and the Determination of $|V_{ub}|$ from QCD Sum Rules

We calculate the electron spectrum of semileptonic decays of B-mesons into non-charmed hadrons. The shape of the spectrum obtained from QCD sum rules is in general agreement with quark model calculations. At high electron energies the decrease of the spectrum is less steep than predicted by Altarelli et al. Our analysis yields a total decay rate $Γ(B\to X_u e\barν) = (6.8\pm 2.0) 10^{13} |V_{ub}|^2 {s}^{-1}$. For the spectrum integrated over electron energies in the interval $2.4{ GeV}\leq E_e \leq 2.6\mbox{\ GeV}$ in the laboratory frame we obtain $Γ(B\to X_u e \barν)= (5.0\pm 1.6) 10^{12} |V_{ub}|^2 {s}^{-1}$. Estimating all sorts of theoretical uncertainties, we obtain $|V_{ub}| = 0.003\pm 0.001$ for the $b \to u$ weak transition matrix element from the new CLEO-data.

Remarks on the Heavy-Quark Symmetry in the Complex Plane

Hadronic systems built from a heavy quark and a cloud of light quarks and massless gluons posess the Isgur-Wise symmetry resulting in certain relations between various form factors. These relations can not be valid in the entire complex plane. We identify contributions which unavoidably violate strongly the symmetry in the time-like domain near thresholds. A possible connection with the heavy-quark phenomenology is discussed in brief.
