The dispersion relation of Landau elementary excitations and the thermodynamic properties of superfluid $^4$He

The dispersion relation $ε(k)$ of the elementary excitations of superfluid $^4$He has been measured at very low temperatures, from saturated vapor pressure up to solidification, using a high flux time-of-flight neutron scattering spectrometer equipped with a high spatial resolution detector (10$^5$ 'pixels'). A complete determination of $ε(k)$ is achieved, from very low wave-vectors up to the end of Pitaeskii's plateau. The results compare favorably in the whole the wave-vector range with the predictions of the dynamic many-body theory (DMBT). At low wave-vectors, bridging the gap between ultrasonic data and former neutron measurements, the evolution with the pressure from anomalous to normal dispersion, as well as the peculiar wave-vector dependence of the phase and group velocities, are accurately characterized. The thermodynamic properties have been calculated analytically, developing Landau's model, using the measured dispersion curve. A good agreement is found below 0.85 K between direct heat capacity measurements and the calculated specific heat, if thermodynamically consistent power series expansions are used. The thermodynamic properties have also been calculated numerically; in this case, the results are applicable with excellent accuracy up to 1.3 K, a temperature above which the dispersion relation itself becomes temperature dependent.

Transport and Phonon Damping in $^{\bf 4}$He

The dynamic structure function $S(k,ω)$ informs about the dispersion and damping of excitations. We have recently (Phys. Rev. B {\bf 97}, 184520 (2018)) compared experimental results for $S(k,ω)$ from high-precision neutron scattering experiment and theoretical results using the ``dynamic many-body theory'' (DMBT), showing excellent agreement over the whole experimentally accessible pressure regime. This paper focuses on the specific aspect of the propagation of low-energy phonons. We report calculations of the phonon mean-free path and phonon life time in liquid \he4 as a function of wave length and pressure. Historically, the question was of interest for experiments of quantum evaporation. More recently, there is interest in the potential use of $^4$He as a detector for low-energy dark matter (K. Schulz and Kathryn M. Zurek, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 117}, 121302 (2016)). While the mean free path of long wave length phonons is large, phonons of intermediate energy can have a short mean free path of the order of $μ$m. Comparison of different levels of theory indicate that reliable predictions of the phonon mean free path can be made only by using the most advanced many--body method available, namely, DMBT.

Microscopic dynamics of superfluid $^4$He: a comprehensive study by inelastic neutron scattering

The dynamic structure factor of superfluid $^4$He has been investigated at very low temperatures by inelastic neutron scattering. The measurements combine different incoming energies resulting in an unprecedentedly large dynamic range with excellent energy resolution, covering wave vectors $Q$ up to 5 Å$^{-1}$ and energies $ω$ up to 15 meV. A detailed description of the dynamics of superfluid $^4$He is obtained from saturated vapor pressure up to solidification. The single-excitation spectrum is substantially modified at high pressures, as the maxon energy exceeds the roton-roton decay threshold. A highly structured multi-excitation spectrum is observed at low energies, where clear thresholds and branches have been identified. Strong phonon emission branches are observed when the phonon or roton group velocities exceed the sound velocity. The spectrum is found to display strong multi-excitations whenever the single-excitations face disintegration following Pitaevskii's type a or b criteria. At intermediate energies, an interesting pattern in the dynamic structure factor is observed in the vicinity of the recoil energy. All these features, which evolve significantly with pressure, are in very good agreement with the Dynamic Many-body calculations, even at the highest densities, where the correlations are strongest.

Superfluid 4He dynamics beyond quasiparticle excitations

The dynamics of superfluid 4He at and above the Landau quasiparticle regime is investigated by high precision inelastic neutron scattering measurements of the dynamic structure factor. A highly structured response is observed above the familiar phonon-maxon-roton spectrum, characterized by sharp thresholds for phonon-phonon, maxon-roton and roton-roton coupling processes. The experimental dynamic structure factor is compared to the calculation of the same physical quantity by a Dynamic Many-body theory including three-phonon processes self-consistently. The theory is found to provide a quantitative description of the dynamics of the correlated bosons for energies up to about three times that of the Landau quasiparticles.

Probing Bogoliubov quasiparticles in superfluid $^3$He with a 'vibrating-wire like' MEMS device

We have measured the interaction between superfluid $^3$He-B and a micro-machined goalpost-shaped device at temperatures below $0.2\,T_c$. The measured damping follows well the theory developed for vibrating wires, in which the Andreev reflection of quasiparticles in the flow field around the moving structure leads to a nonlinear frictional force. At low velocities the damping force is proportional to velocity while it tends to saturate for larger excitations. Above a velocity of 2.6$\,$mms$^{-1}$ the damping abruptly increases, which is interpreted in terms of Cooper-pair breaking. Interestingly, this critical velocity is significantly lower than reported with other mechanical probes immersed in superfluid $^3$He. Furthermore, we report on a nonlinear resonance shape for large motion amplitudes that we interpret as an inertial effect due to quasiparticle friction, but other mechanisms could possibly be invoked as well.

In-situ comprehensive calibration of a tri-port nano-electro-mechanical device

We report on experiments performed in vacuum and at cryogenic temperatures on a tri-port nano-electro-mechanical (NEMS) device. One port is a very non-linear capacitive actuation, while the two others implement the magnetomotive scheme with a linear input force port and a (quasi-linear) output velocity port. We present an experimental method enabling a full characterization of the nanomechanical device harmonic response: the non-linear capacitance function $C(x)$ is derived, and the normal parameters $k$ and $m$ (spring constant and mass) of the mode under study are measured through a careful definition of the motion (in meters) and of the applied forces (in Newtons). These results are obtained with a series of purely electric measurements performed without disconnecting/reconnecting the device, and rely only on known DC properties of the circuit, making use of a thermometric property of the oscillator itself: we use the Young modulus of the coating metal as a thermometer, and the resistivity for Joule heating. The setup requires only three connecting lines without any particular matching, enabling the preservation of a high impedance NEMS environment even at MHz frequencies. The experimental data are fit to a detailed electrical and thermal model of the NEMS device, demonstrating a complete understanding of its dynamics. These methods are quite general and can be adapted (as a whole, or in parts) to a large variety of elecromechanical devices.

Nonlinear parametric amplification in a tri-port nanoelectromechanical device

We report on measurements performed at low temperatures on a nanoelectromechanical system (NEMS) under (capacitive) parametric pumping. The excitations and detection schemes are purely electrical, and enable in the present experiment the straightforward measurement of forces down to about a femtonewton, for displacements of an Angström, using standard room temperature electronics. We demonstrate that a small (linear) force applied on the device can be amplified up to more than a 100 times, while the system is {\it truly moving}. We explore the dynamics up to about 50$~$nm deflections for cantilevers about 200$~$nm thick by 3$~$$μ$m long oscillating at a frequency of 7$~$MHz. We present a generic modeling of nonlinear parametric amplification, and give analytic theoretical solutions enabling the fit of experimental results. We finally discuss the practical limits of the technique, with a particular application: the measurement of {\it anelastic damping} in the metallic coating of the device with an exceptional resolution of about 0.5$~$\%.

Strong orientational effect of stretched aerogel on the 3He order parameter

Deformation of aerogel strongly modifies the orientation of the order parameter of superfluid 3He confined in aerogel. We used a radial squeezing of aerogel to keep the orbital angular momentum of the 3He Cooper pairs in the plane perpendicular to the magnetic field. We did not find strong evidence for a "polar" phase, with a nodal line along the equator of the Fermi surface, predicted to occur at large radial squeezing. Instead we observed 3He-A with a clear experimental evidence of the destruction of the long-range order by random anisotropy -- the Larkin-Imry-Ma effect. In 3He-B we observed and identified new modes of NMR, which are impossible to obtain in bulk 3He-B. One of these modes is characterized by a repulsive interaction between magnons, which is suitable for the magnon Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC).

Electron - nuclear recoil discrimination by pulse shape analysis

In the framework of the ``ULTIMA'' project, we use ultra cold superfluid 3He bolometers for the direct detection of single particle events, aimed for a future use as a dark matter detector. One parameter of the pulse shape observed after such an event is the thermalization time constant. Until now it was believed that this parameter only depends on geometrical factors and superfluid 3He properties, and that it is independent of the nature of the incident particles. In this report we show new results which demonstrate that a difference for muon- and neutron events, as well as events simulated by heater pulses exist. The possibility to use this difference for event discrimination in a future dark matter detector will be discussed.

Bolometric calibration of a superfluid $^3$He detector for Dark Matter search: direct measurement of the scintillated energy fraction for neutron, electron and muon events

We report on the calibration of a superfluid $^3$He bolometer developed for the search of non-baryonic Dark Matter. Precise thermometry is achieved by the direct measurement of thermal excitations using Vibrating Wire Resonators (VWRs). The heating pulses for calibration were produced by the direct quantum process of quasiparticle generation by other VWRs present. The bolometric calibration factor is analyzed as a function of temperature and excitation level of the sensing VWR. The calibration is compared to bolometric measurements of the nuclear neutron capture reaction and heat depositions by cosmic muons and low energy electrons. The comparison allows a quantitative estimation of the ultra-violet scintillation rate of irradiated helium, demonstrating the possibility of efficient electron recoil event rejection.

$^3$He experimentum crucis for Dark Matter puzzles

The leading direct dark matter search experiments: CDMS, Edelweis and DAMA/NaI exhibit different results for different approaches to the problem. This contradiction can reflect a nontrivial and probably a multi-component nature of the cosmological dark matter. WIMPs can possess dominantly a Spin Dependent interaction with nucleons. They can be superheavy or represent atom-like systems of superheavy charged particles. The Dark matter can contain a component, which strongly interacts with the matter. We show that even a moderate size superfluid $^3$He detector provides a crucial test for these hypotheses and that its existing laboratory prototype is already of interest for the experimental dark matter search.

An analysis method for time ordered data processing of Dark Matter experiments

The analysis of the time ordered data of Dark Matter experiments is becoming more and more challenging with the increase of sensitivity in the ongoing and forthcoming projects. Combined with the well-known level of background events, this leads to a rather high level of pile-up in the data. Ionization, scintillation as well as bolometric signals present common features in their acquisition timeline: low frequency baselines, random gaussian noise, parasitic noise and signal characterized by well-defined peaks. In particular, in the case of long-lasting signals such as bolometric ones, the pile-up of events may lead to an inaccurate reconstruction of the physical signal (misidentification as well as fake events). We present a general method to detect and extract signals in noisy data with a high pile-up rate and qe show that events from few keV to hundreds of keV can be reconstructed in time ordered data presenting a high pile-up rate. This method is based on an iterative detection and fitting procedure combined with prior wavelet-based denoising of the data and baseline subtraction. {We have tested this method on simulated data of the MACHe3 prototype experiment and shown that the iterative fitting procedure allows us to recover the lowest energy events, of the order of a few keV, in the presence of background signals from a few to hundreds of keV. Finally we applied this method to the recent MACHe3 data to successfully measure the spectrum of conversion electrons from Co57 source and also the spectrum of the background cosmic muons.

MACHe3, a prototype for non-baryonic dark matter search: KeV event detection and multicell correlation

Superfluid He3 at ultra-low temperatures (100 microKelvins) is a sensitive medium for the bolometric detection of particles. MACHe3 (MAtrix of Cells of Helium 3) is a project for non-baryonic dark matter search using He3 as a sensitive medium. Simulations made on a high granularity detector show a very good rejection to background signals. A multicell prototype including 3 bolometers has been developed to allow correlations between the cells for background event discrimination. One of the cells contains a low activity Co57 source providing conversion electrons of 7.3 and 13.6 keV to confirm the detection of low energy events. First results on the multicell prototype are presented. A detection threshold of 1 keV has been achieved. The detection of low energy conversion electrons coming from the Co57 source is highlighted as well as the cosmic muon spectrum measurement. The possibility to reject background events by using the correlation among the cells is demonstrated from the simultaneous detection of muons in different cells.

Low energy conversion electron detection in superfluid He3 at ultra-low temperature

We report on the first results of the MACHe3 (MAtrix of Cells of Helium 3) prototype experiment concerning the measurement of low energy conversion electrons at ultra-low temperature. For the first time, the feasibility of the detection of low energy electrons is demonstrated in superfluid He3-B cooled down to 100 microK. Low energy electrons at 7.3 keV coming from the K shell conversion of the 14.4 keV nuclear transition of a low activity Co57 source are detected, opening the possibility to use a He3-based detector for the detection of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) which are expected to release an amount of energy higher-bounded by 5.6 keV.

Magnetization and Spin-Diffusion of Liquid 3He in Aerogel

We report theoretical calculations of the normal-state spin diffusion coefficient of 3He in aerogel, including both elastic and inelastic scattering of 3He quasiparticles, and compare these results with experimental data for 3He in 98% porous silica aerogel. This analysis provides a determination of the elastic mean free path within the aerogel. Measurements of the magnetization of the superfluid phase provide a test of the theory of pairbreaking and magnetic response of low-energy excitations in the ``dirty'' B-phase of 3He in aerogel. A consistent interpretation of the data for the spin-diffusion coefficient, magnetization and superfluid transition temperature is obtained by including correlation effects in the aerogel density.
