Light-Induced Metastable State in Charge-Ordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$

We report temporal changes in Raman-scattering spectra of detwinned YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ single crystals under exposure to red laser light polarized along the crystallographic $a$-axis. A recent publication by Bakr et al. (Phys. Rev. B 88 214517 (2013)) identified new Raman-active modes that appear upon cooling below $T \sim 200$ K, and attributed these modes to charge ordering phenomena observed in x-ray scattering and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments on the same materials. Here we report that the intensities of these modes depend not only on temperature and oxygen content, but also on the cumulative photon dose absorbed by the YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ samples. The light-induced changes in the Raman spectra exhibit a stretched-exponential time dependence, with a characteristic time that increases strongly upon cooling. They also depend strongly on doping and are most pronounced for $x \sim 0.6$. In fully illuminated samples, the mode intensities exhibit a monotonic temperature dependence indicative of a second-order phase transition. The findings indicate a metastable state generated by light-induced rearrangement of the oxygen dopants. We hypothesize that the new Raman phonons are associated with a three-dimensional charge-ordered state induced by light illumination, analogous to a state that was recently observed by resonant x-ray scattering in oxygen-disordered YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ films.

Probing electronic excitations in iridates with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and emission spectroscopy techniques

We report a comprehensive resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of various iridate materials focusing on core-level excitations and transitions between crystal-field split d-levels. The 2p core hole created at the Ir $L_3$ absorption edge has a very short lifetime giving rise to a broad absorption width ($\sim 5$~eV). This absorption linewidth broadening can be overcome by studying the resonant x-ray emission spectroscopy (RXES) map, which is a two-dimensional intensity map of the Ir L$α_2$ emission obtained with high energy-resolution monochromator and analyzer. By limiting the emitted photon energy to a narrow range, one can obtain x-ray absorption spectra in the high energy-resolution fluorescence detection (HERFD) mode, while one can also simulate quasi-$M_4$-edge absorption spectra by integrating over incident photon energies. Both methods improve the absorption line width significantly, allowing detailed studies of unoccupied electronic structure in iridates and other $5d$ transition metal compounds. On the other hand, the short lifetime of the 2p core hole benefits the study of excitations of valence electrons. We show that the incident energy dependence of the RIXS spectra for $d-d$ transitions is simple to understand due to the short core-hole lifetime, which validates ultra-short core-hole lifetime approximation used widely in theoretical calculations. We compared $d-d$ excitations in various iridates and found that the excitations between the t$_{2g}$ and e$_g$ states share many similarities among different materials. However, the RIXS spectra due to the transitions between the spin-orbit-split t$_{2g}$ levels vary widely depending on the oxidation state and electronic bandwidths.

Pressure-driven collapse of the relativistic electronic ground state in a honeycomb iridate

The electronic ground state in many iridate materials is described by a complex wave-function in which spin and orbital angular momenta are entangled due to relativistic spin-orbit coupling (SOC). Such a localized electronic state carries an effective total angular momentum of $J_{eff}=1/2$. In materials with an edge-sharing octahedral crystal structure, such as the honeycomb iridates Li2IrO3 and Na2IrO3, these $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments are expected to be coupled through a special bond-dependent magnetic interaction, which is a necessary condition for the realization of a Kitaev quantum spin liquid. However, this relativistic electron picture is challenged by an alternate description, in which itinerant electrons are confined to a benzene-like hexagon, keeping the system insulating despite the delocalized nature of the electrons. In this quasi-molecular orbital (QMO) picture, the honeycomb iridates are an unlikely choice for a Kitaev spin liquid. Here we show that the honeycomb iridate Li2IrO3 is best described by a $J_{eff}=1/2$ state at ambient pressure, but crosses over into a QMO state under the application of small (~ 0.1 GPa) hydrostatic pressure. This result illustrates that the physics of iridates is extremely rich due to a delicate balance between electronic bandwidth, spin-orbit coupling, crystal field, and electron correlation.

Synchrotron x-ray scattering study of charge-density-wave order in HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$

We present a detailed synchrotron x-ray scattering study of the charge-density-wave (CDW) order in simple tetragonal HgBa$_2$CuO$_{4+δ}$ (Hg1201). Resonant soft x-ray scattering measurements reveal that short-range order appears at a temperature that is distinctly lower than the pseudogap temperature and in excellent agreement with a prior transient reflectivity result. Despite considerable structural differences between Hg1201 and YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+δ}$, the CDW correlations exhibit similar doping dependencies, and we demonstrate a universal relationship between the CDW wave vector and the size of the reconstructed Fermi pocket observed in quantum oscillation experiments. The CDW correlations in Hg1201 vanish already below optimal doping, once the correlation length is comparable to the CDW modulation period, and they appear to be limited by the disorder potential from unit cells hosting two interstitial oxygen atoms. A complementary hard x-ray diffraction measurement, performed on an underdoped Hg1201 sample in magnetic fields along the crystallographic $c$ axis of up to 16 T, provides information about the form factor of the CDW order. As expected from the single-CuO$_2$-layer structure of Hg1201, the CDW correlations vanish at half-integer values of $L$ and appear to be peaked at integer $L$. We conclude that the atomic displacements associated with the short-range CDW order are mainly planar, within the CuO$_2$ layers.

Rapid Suppression of the Charge Density Wave in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ under Hydrostatic Pressure

We report on the effects of hydrostatic pressure (HP) on the charge density wave observed in underdoped cuprates. We studied YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.6}$ ($T_c$=61 K) using high-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS), and reveal an extreme sensitivity of the phonon anomalies related to the charge density wave (CDW) order to HP. The amplitudes of the normal state broadening and superconductivity induced phonon softening at Q$_{CDW}$ rapidly decrease as HP is applied, resulting in the complete suppression of signatures of the CDW below $\sim$1 GPa. Additional IXS measurements on YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.75}$ demonstrate that this very rapid effect cannot be explained by pressure-induced modification of the doping level and highlight the different role of external pressure and doping in tuning the phase diagram of the cuprates. Our results provide new insights into the mechanisms underlying the CDW formation and its interplay with superconductivity.

Raman scattering study of vibrational and magnetic excitations in Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have measured the doping and temperature dependence of lattice vibrations and magnetic excitations in the prototypical doped spin-orbit Mott insulator Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ (x=0, 0.015, and 0.10). Our findings show that the pseudospin-lattice coupling -- responsible for the renormalization of several low energy phonon modes -- is preserved even when long-range magnetic order is suppressed by doping. In our most highly doped sample, the single magnon (Gamma-point) excitation disappears while the two-magnon mode softens and becomes heavily damped. Doping induced electron-phonon coupling is also observed in a higher energy phonon mode. We observe two different electron-phonon interaction channels, which provide evidence of the coexistence of fluctuating magnetic moments and mobile carriers in doped iridates.

Crossover from Collective to Incoherent Spin Excitations in Superconducting Cuprates Probed by Detuned Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering

Spin excitations in the overdoped high temperature superconductors Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$ and (Bi,Pb)$_2$(Sr,La)$_{2}$CuO$_{6+δ}$ were investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) as functions of doping and detuning of the incoming photon energy above the Cu-$L_3$ absorption peak. The RIXS spectra at optimal doping are dominated by a paramagnon feature with peak energy independent of photon energy, similar to prior results on underdoped cuprates. Beyond optimal doping, the RIXS data indicate a sharp crossover to a regime with a strong contribution from incoherent particle/hole excitations whose maximum shows a fluorescence-like shift upon detuning. The spectra of both compound families are closely similar, and their salient features are reproduced by exact-diagonalization calculations of the single-band Hubbard model on a finite cluster. The results are discussed in the light of recent transport experiments indicating a quantum phase transition near optimal doping.

The collapsed tetragonal phase as a strongly covalent and fully nonmagnetic state: persistent magnetism with interlayer As-As bond formation in Rh-doped Ca$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Fe$_2$As$_2$

A well-known feature of CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$-based superconductors is the pressure-induced collapsed tetragonal phase that is commonly ascribed to the formation of an interlayer As-As bond. Using detailed X-ray scattering and spectroscopy, we find that Rh-doped Ca$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ does not undergo a first-order phase transition and that local Fe moments persist despite the formation of interlayer As-As bonds. Our density functional theory calculations reveal that the Fe-As bond geometry is critical for stabilizing magnetism and that the pressure-induced drop in the $c$ lattice parameter observed in pure CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is mostly due to a constriction within the FeAs planes. These phenomena are best understood using an often overlooked explanation for the equilibrium Fe-As bond geometry, which is set by a competition between covalent bonding and exchange splitting between strongly hybridized Fe $3d$ and As $4p$ states. In this framework, the collapsed tetragonal phase emerges when covalent bonding completely wins out over exchange splitting. Thus the collapsed tetragonal phase is properly understood as a strong, covalent phase that is fully nonmagnetic with the As-As bond forming as a byproduct.

Persistent paramagnons deep in the metallic phase of Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$

We have studied the magnetic excitations of electron-doped Sr$_{2-x}$La$_x$IrO$_4$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.10$) using resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the Ir L$_3$-edge. The long range magnetic order is rapidly lost with increasing $x$, but two-dimensional short-range order (SRO) and dispersive magnon excitations with nearly undiminished spectral weight persist well into the metallic part of the phase diagram. The magnons in the SRO phase are heavily damped and exhibit anisotropic softening. Their dispersions are well described by a pseudospin-1/2 Heisenberg model with exchange interactions whose spatial range increases with doping. We also find a doping-independent high-energy magnetic continuum, which is not described by this model. The spin-orbit excitons arising from the pseudospin-3/2 manifold of the Ir ions broaden substantially in the SRO phase, but remain largely separated from the low-energy magnons. Pseudospin-1/2 models are therefore a good starting point for the theoretical description of the low-energy magnetic dynamics of doped iridates.

Evidences of Mott physics in iron pnictides from x-ray spectroscopy

X-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies are jointly used as fast probes to determine the evolution as a function of doping of the fluctuating local magnetic moments in K- and Cr- hole-doped BaFe2As2. An increase in the local moment with hole-doping is found, supporting the theoretical scenario in which a Mott insulating state that would be realized for half-filled conduction bands has an influence throughout the phase diagram of these iron-pnictides.

X-ray scattering study of pyrochlore iridates: crystal structure, electronic and magnetic excitations

We have investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the pyrochlore iridates Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using a combination of resonant elastic x-ray scattering, x-ray powder diffraction, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The structural parameters of Eu2Ir2O7 have been examined as a function of temperature and applied pressure, with a particular emphasis on regions of the phase diagram where electronic and magnetic phase transitions have been reported. We find no evidence of crystal symmetry change over the range of temperatures (~6 to 300 K) and pressures (~0.1 to 17 GPa) studied. We have also investigated the electronic and magnetic excitations in single crystal samples of Eu2Ir2O7 and Pr2Ir2O7 using high resolution Ir L3-edge RIXS. In spite of very different ground state properties, we find these materials exhibit qualitatively similar excitation spectra, with crystal field excitations at ~3-5 eV, spin-orbit excitations at ~0.5-1 eV, and broad low-lying excitations below ~0.15 eV. In Eu2Ir2O7 we observe highly damped magnetic excitations at ~45 meV, which display significant momentum dependence. We compare these results with recent dynamical structure factor calculations.

Topological states in pyrochlore iridates: long-range anisotropy strongly competing with spin-orbit interaction

In the search for topological phases in correlated electron systems, iridium-based pyrochlores A2Ir2O7 -- materials with 5d transition-metal ions -- provide fertile grounds. Several novel topological states have been predicted but the actual realization of such states is believed to critically depend on the strength of local potentials arising from distortions of IrO6-cages. We test this hypothesis by measuring with resonant x-ray scattering the electronic level splittings in the A= Y, Eu systems, which we show to agree very well with ab initio electronic structure calculations. We find, however, that not distortions of IrO6-octahedra are the primary source for quenching the spin-orbit interaction, but strong long-range lattice anisotropies, which inevitably break the local cubic symmetry and will thereby be decisive in determining the system's topological ground state.

Crystal growth and intrinsic magnetic behavior of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$

We report on the growth of stoichiometric Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ single crystals, which allow us to unveil their intrinsic magnetic properties. The effect of different growth conditions has been investigated for crystals grown by the flux method. We find that the magnetic response depends very sensitively on the details of the growth conditions. We assess the defect concentration based on magnetization, X-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical conductivity measurements. We find that samples with a low concentration of electronically active defects show much reduced in-gap spectral weight in the optical conductivity and a pronounced two-magnon peak in the Raman scattering spectrum. A prolonged exposure at high temperature during the growth leads to higher defect concentration likely due to creation of oxygen vacancies. We further demonstrate a systematic intergrowth of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ phases by varying the growth temperature. Our results thus emphasize that revealing the intrinsic magnetic properties of Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ and related materials requires a scrupulous control of the crystal growth process.

Two-magnon Raman scattering and pseudospin-lattice interactions in Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7

We have used Raman scattering to investigate the magnetic excitations and lattice dynamics in the prototypical spin-orbit Mott insulators Sr2IrO4 and Sr3Ir2O7. Both compounds exhibit pronounced two-magnon Raman scattering features with different energies, lineshapes, and temperature dependencies, which in part reflect the different influence of long-range frustrating exchange interactions. Additionally, we find strong Fano asymmetries in the lineshapes of low-energy phonon modes in both compounds, which disappear upon cooling below the antiferromagnetic ordering temperatures. These unusual phonon anomalies indicate that the spin-orbit coupling in Mott-insulating iridates is not sufficiently strong to quench the orbital dynamics in the paramagnetic state.

Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of electronic excitations in insulating K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$

We report an Fe $K$-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study of K$_{0.83}$Fe$_{1.53}$Se$_2$. This material is an insulator, unlike many parent compounds of iron-based superconductors. We found a sharp excitation around 1 eV, which is resonantly enhanced when the incident photon energy is tuned near the pre-edge region of the absorption spectrum. The spectral weight and line shape of this excitation exhibit clear momentum dependence. In addition, we observe momentum-independent broad interband transitions at higher excitation energy of 3-7 eV. Calculations based on a 70 band $dp$ orbital model, using a moderate $U_{\rm eff}\approx 2.5$ eV, indicate that the $\sim$1 eV feature originates from the correlated Fe 3$d$ electrons, with a dominant $d_{xz}$ and $d_{yz}$ orbital character. We find that a moderate $U_{\rm eff}$ yields a satisfying agreement with the experimental spectra, suggesting that the electron correlations in the insulating and metallic iron based superconductors are comparable.

Collective nature of spin excitations in superconducting cuprates probed by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering

We used resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) with and without analysis of the scattered photon polarization, to study dispersive spin excitations in the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O6+x over a wide range of doping levels (0.1 < x < 1). The excitation profiles were carefully monitored as the incident photon energy was detuned from the resonant condition, and the spin excitation energy was found to be independent of detuning for all x. These findings demonstrate that the largest fraction of the spin-flip RIXS profiles in doped cuprates arises from magnetic collective modes, rather than from incoherent particle-hole excitations as recently suggested theoretically [Benjamin et al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 112, 247002(2014)]. Implications for the theoretical description of the electron system in the cuprates are discussed.

Structural origin of the anomalous temperature dependence of the local magnetic moments in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials

We report a combination of Fe K$β$ x-ray emission spectroscopy and $ab$-intio calculations to investigate the correlation between structural and magnetic degrees of freedom in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$. The puzzling temperature behavior of the local moment found in rare earth-doped CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ [\textit{H. Gretarsson, et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 110}, 047003 (2013)}] is also observed in CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$. We explain this phenomenon based on first-principles calculations with scaled magnetic interaction. One scaling parameter is sufficient to describe quantitatively the magnetic moments in both CaFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x} $)$_{2}$ ($x=0.055$) and Ca$_{0.78}% $La$_{0.22}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ at all temperatures. The anomalous growth of the local moments with increasing temperature can be understood from the observed large thermal expansion of the $c$-axis lattice parameter combined with strong magnetoelastic coupling. These effects originate from the strong tendency to form As-As dimers across the Ca layer in the CaFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ family of materials. Our results emphasize the dual local-itinerant character of magnetism in Fe pnictides.

Tuning Magnetic Coupling in Sr$_2$IrO$_4$ Thin Films with Epitaxial Strain

We report x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of epitaxially-strained $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$ thin films. The films were grown on $\mathrm{SrTiO_3}$ and $\mathrm{(LaAlO_3)_{0.3}(Sr_2AlTaO_6)_{0.7}}$ substrates, under slight tensile and compressive strains, respectively. Although the films develop a magnetic structure reminiscent of bulk $\mathrm{Sr_2IrO_4}$, the magnetic correlations are extremely anisotropic, with in-plane correlation lengths significantly longer than the out-of-plane correlation lengths. In addition, the compressive (tensile) strain serves to suppress (enhance) the magnetic ordering temperature $\mathrm{T_N}$, while raising (lowering) the energy of the zone boundary magnon. Quantum chemical calculations show that the tuning of magnetic energy scales can be understood in terms of strain-induced change in bond lengths.
