Cooling of Neutron Stars admixed with Light Dark Matter: a case study

Neutron Stars (NSs) are born as hot, lepton-rich objects that evolve according to the standard paradigm through subsequent stages where they radiate the excess of energy by emitting, first, neutrinos and, later on, photons. Current descriptions based on Standard Model calculations cannot fully explain all the existing cooling data series for the dozens of objects that have been reported. In this work, we consider the intriguing possibility that cooling NSs could be actually admixed with a fraction of light dark matter (LDM), $χ$. We focus on a particular case study assuming a generic light candidate with mass $m_χ=0.1$ $\rm GeV/c^2$ that undergoes self-annihilating reactions through pseudoscalar mediators producing neutrinos in the final state. We include one additional feature, allowing thermal conduction from LDM while inside the dark core. By performing simulations of the temperature evolution in the NS, we find that cooling patterns could be distorted by the presence of LDM and discuss these results in light of their observability.

Bayesian analysis of multimessenger M-R data with interpolated hybrid EoS

We introduce a family of equations of state (EoS) for hybrid neutron star (NS) matter that is obtained by a two-zone parabolic interpolation between a soft hadronic EoS at low densities and a set of stiff quark matter EoS at high densities within a finite region of chemical potentials $μ_H < μ< μ_Q$. Fixing the hadronic EoS as the APR one and choosing the color-superconducting, nonlocal NJL model with two free parameters for the quark phase, we perform Bayesian analyses with this two-parameter family of hybrid EoS. Using three different sets of observational constraints that include the mass of PSR J0740+6620, the tidal deformability for GW170817, and the mass-radius relation for PSR J0030+0451 from NICER as obligatory (set 1), while set 2 uses the possible upper limit on the maximum mass from GW170817 as an additional constraint and set 3 instead of the possibility that the lighter object in the asymmetric binary merger GW190814 is a neutron star. We confirm that in any case, the quark matter phase has to be color superconducting with the dimensionless diquark coupling approximately fulfilling the Fierz relation $η_D=0.75$ and the most probable solutions exhibiting a proportionality between $η_D$ and $η_V$, the coupling of the repulsive vector interaction that is required for a sufficiently large maximum mass. We used the Bayesian analysis to investigate with the method of fictitious measurements the consequences of anticipating different radii for the massive $2~M_\odot$ PSR J0740+6220 for the most likely equation of state. With the actual outcome of the NICER radius measurement on PSR J0740+6220 we could conclude that for the most likely hybrid star EoS would not support a maximum mass as large as $2.5~M_\odot$ so that the event GW190814 was a binary black hole merger.

Hybrid equation of state with pasta phases and third family of compact stars

The effect of pasta phases on the quark-hadron phase transition is investigated for a set of relativistic mean-field equations of state for both hadron and quark matter. The results of the full numerical solution with pasta phases are compared with those of an interpolating construction used in previous works, for which we demonstrate an adequate description of the numerical results. A one-to-one mapping of the free parameter of the construction to the physical surface tension of the quark-hadron interface is obtained for which a fit formula is given. For each pair of quark and hadron matter models the critical value of the surface tension is determined, above which the phase transition becomes close to the Maxwell construction. This result agrees well with earlier theoretical estimates. The study is extended to neutron star matter in beta equilibrium with electrons and muons and is applied to investigate the effect of pasta phases on the structure of hybrid compact stars and the robustness of a possible third family solution.

Bayesian Analysis for Extracting Properties of the Nuclear Equation of State from Observational Data including Tidal Deformability from GW170817

We develop a Bayesian analysis method for selecting the most probable equation of state under a set of constraints from compact star physics, which now include the tidal deformability from GW170817. We apply this method for the first time to a two-parameter family of hybrid equations of state that is based on realistic models for the hadronic phase (KVORcut02) and the quark matter phase (SFM$α$) which produce a third family of hybrid stars in the mass-radius diagram. One parameter ($α$) characterizes the screening of the string tension in the string-flip model of quark matter while the other ($Δ_P$) belongs to the mixed phase construction that mimics the thermodynamics of pasta phases and includes the Maxwell construction as a limiting case for $Δ_P=0$. We present the corresponding results for compact star properties like mass, radius and tidal deformabilities and use empirical data for them in the newly developed Bayesian analysis method to obtain the probabilities for the model parameters within their considered range.

Robustness of third family solutions for hybrid stars against mixed phase effects

We investigate the robustness of third family solutions for hybrid compact stars with a quark matter core that correspond to the occurrence of high-mass twin stars against a softening of the phase transition by means of a construction that mimics the effects of pasta structures in the mixed phase. We consider a class of hybrid equations of state that exploits a relativistic mean-field model for the hadronic as well as for the quark matter phase. We present parametrizations that correspond to branches of high-mass twin star pairs with maximum masses between $2.05~M_\odot$ and $1.48~M_\odot$ having radius differences between 3.2 km and 1.5 km, respectively. When compared to a Maxwell construction with a fixed value of critical pressure $P_c$ the effect of the mixed phase construction consists in the occurrence of a region of pressures around $P_c$ belonging to the coexistence of hadronic and quark matter phases between the onset pressure at $P_H$ and the end of the transition at $P_Q$. The maximum broadening which would still allow mass twin compact stars is found to be $(P_Q-P_H)_{\rm max} \approx P_c$ for all parametrizations within the present class of models. At least the heavier of the neutron stars of the binary merger GW170817 could have been a member of the third family of hybrid stars.

Cooling of neutron stars with stiff stellar matter

Recent evidence for high masses ($\sim 2~ M_\odot$) pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 requires neutron star matter to have a stiff equation of state (EoS). The thermal evolution of compact stars (CS) with stiff hadronic EoS necessitates the application of the "nuclear medium cooling" scenario with a selection of appropriate proton gap profiles together with in-medium effects (like pion softening) on cooling mechanisms in order to achieve a satisfactory explanation of all existing observational data for the temperature-age relation of CS. Here we focus on two examples from \cite{Grigorian:2016leu} for a stiff hadronic EoS without (DD2 EoS) and with (DD2vex) excluded volume correction.

Bayesian analysis for a new class of hybrid EoS models using mass and radius data of compact stars

We present a Bayesian analysis for a new class of realistic models of two-phase equations of state (EoS) for hybrid stars and demonstrate that the observation of a pair of high-mass twin stars would have a sufficient discriminating power to favor hybrid EoS with a strong first order phase transition over alternative EoS. Such a measurement would provide evidence for the existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram.

New class of hybrid EoS and Bayesian M-R data analysis

We explore systematically a new class of two-phase equations of state (EoS) for hybrid stars that is characterized by three main features : (1) stiffening of the nuclear EoS at supersaturation densities due to quark exchange effects (Pauli blocking) between hadrons, modelled by an excluded volume correction, (2) stiffening of the quark matter EoS at high densities due to multiquark interactions and (3) possibility for a strong first order phase transition with an early onset and large density jump. The third feature results from a Maxwell construction for the possible transition from the nuclear to a quark matter phase and its properties depend on the two parameters used for (1) and (2), respectively. Varying these two parameters one obtains a class of hybrid EoS that yields solutions of the Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff (TOV) equations for sequences of hadronic and hybrid stars in the mass-radius diagram which cover the full range of patterns according to the Alford-Han-Prakash classification following which a hybrid star branch can be either absent, connected or disconnected with the hadronic one. The latter case often includes a tiny connected branch. The disconnected hybrid star branch, also called "third family", corresponds to high-mass twin stars characterized by the same gravitational mass but different radii. We perform a Bayesian analysis and demonstrate that the observation of such a pair of high-mass twin stars would have a sufficient discriminating power to favor hybrid EoS with a strong first order phase transition over alternative EoS.

Influence of the stiffness of the equation of state and in-medium effects on the cooling of compact stars

Measurements demonstrate the existence of compact stars with masses in a broad range from 1.2 to 2 $M_\odot$. The most massive of these objects might be hybrid stars. To fulfill the constraint $M_{\rm max}>2~M_{\odot}$ with a reserve we exploit the stiff DD2 hadronic equation of state (EoS) without and with excluded volume (DD2vex) correction, which produce maximum neutron star masses of $M_{\rm max} = 2.43~M_{\odot}$ and $2.70~M_{\odot}$, respectively. We show that the stiffness of the EoS does not preclude an explanation of the whole set of cooling data within "nuclear medium cooling" scenario for compact stars by a variation of the star masses. We select appropriate proton gap profiles from those exploited in the literature and allow for a variation of the effective pion gap controlling the efficiency of the medium modified Urca process. However, we suppress the possibility of pion condensation. In general, the stiffer the EoS the steeper a decrease with density of the effective pion gap is required. Results are compared with previously obtained ones for the HDD EoS for which $M_{\rm max} =2.06~M_{\odot}$. The cooling of the compact star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A (Cas A) is explained mainly by an efficient medium modified Urca process. With the DD2vex EoS and using an effective pion gap steeper decreasing with the density and/or a proton gap shifted to smaller densities we are also able to reproduce both a strong decline compatible with ACIS-S data and HRC-S instrument data. The mass of Cas A is estimated as $1.6 - 1.9~M_{\odot}$, above the value $1.5~M_{\odot}$, which we have evaluated with the softer HDD equation of state. Different mass choices for the hottest object XMMU J173203.3-344518 are discussed. We make general remarks also on hybrid star cooling and on its dependence on the stiffness of the hadronic EoS.

Algorithm for Solving the Optimization Problem for the Temperature Distribution on a Plate

The work describes the maximization problem regarding heating of an area on the surface of a thin plate within a given temperature range. The solution of the problem is applied to ion injectors. The given temperature range corresponds to a required pressure of a saturated gas comprising evaporated atoms of the plate material. In order to find the solution, a one-parameter optimization problem was formulated and implemented leading to optimization of the plate's specific geometry. It was shown that a heated area can be increased up to 23.5% in comparison with the regular rectangle form of a given plate configuration.

Mass-radius constraints for the neutron star EoS - Bayesian analysis

We suggest a new Bayesian analysis (BA) using disjunct M-R constraints for extracting probability measures for cold, dense matter equations of state (EoS). One of the key issues of such an analysis is the question of a deconfinement transition in compact stars and whether it proceeds as a crossover or rather as a first order transition. We show by postulating results of not yet existing radius measurements for the known pulsars with a mass of $2M_\odot$ that a radius gap of about 3 km would clearly select an EoS with a strong first order phase transition as the most probably one. This would support the existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram under scrutiny in present and upcoming heavy-ion collision experiments.

Cooling of neutron stars and hybrid stars with a stiff hadronic EoS

Within the "nuclear medium cooling" scenario of neutron stars all reliably known temperature - age data, including those of the central compact objects in the supernova remnants of Cassiopeia A and XMMU-J1732, can be comfortably explained by a set of cooling curves obtained by variation of the star mass within the range of typical observed masses. The recent measurements of the high masses of the pulsars PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348-0432 on the one hand, and of the low masses for PSR J0737-3039B and the companion of PSR J1756-2251 on the other, provide independent proof for the existence of neutron stars with masses in a broad range from $\sim 1.2$ to 2 $M_\odot$. The values $M>2 M_{\odot}$ call for sufficiently stiff equations of state for neutron star matter. We investigate the response of the set of neutron star cooling curves to a stiffening of the nuclear equation of state so that maximum masses of about $2.4 M_\odot$ would be accessible and to a deconfinement phase transition from such stiff nuclear matter in the outer core to color superconducting quark matter in the inner core. Without readjustment of cooling inputs the mass range required to cover all cooling data for the stiff DD2 equation of state should include masses of $2.426 M_\odot$ for describing the fast cooling of CasA while the existence of a quark matter core accelerates the cooling so that CasA cooling data are described with a hybrid star of mass $1.674 M_\odot$.

New Bayesian analysis of hybrid EoS constraints with mass-radius data for compact stars

We suggest a new Bayesian analysis using disjunct mass and radius constraints for extracting probability measures for cold, dense nuclear matter equations of state. One of the key issues of such an analysis is the question of a deconfinement transition in compact stars and whether it proceeds as a crossover or rather as a first order transition. The latter question is relevant for the possible existence of a critical endpoint in the QCD phase diagram under scrutiny in present and upcoming heavy-ion collision experiments.

Nuclear medium cooling scenario in the light of new Cas A cooling data and the 2 M_sun pulsar mass measurements

Recently, Elshamounty et al. performed a reanalysis of the surface temperature of the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A on the basis of Chandra data measured during last decade, and added a new data point. We show that all reliably known temperature data of neutron stars including those belonging to Cassiopea A can be comfortably explained in our "nuclear medium cooling" scenario of neutron stars. The cooling rates account for medium-modified one-pion exchange in dense matter, polarization effects in the pair-breaking-formation processes operating on superfluid neutrons and protons paired in the 1S_0 state, and other relevant processes. The emissivity of the pair-breaking-formation process in the 3P_2 state is a tiny quantity within our scenario. Crucial for a successful description of the Cassiopeia A cooling proves to be the thermal conductivity from both, the electrons and nucleons, being reduced by medium effects. Moreover, we exploit an EoS which stiffens at high densities due to an excluded volume effect and is capable of describing a maximum mass of 2.1 M_sun, thus including the recent measurements of PSR J1614-2230 and PSR J0348+0432.

Strangeness in the cores of neutron stars

The measurement of the mass 1.97 +/- 0.04 M_sun for PSR J1614-2230 provides a new constraint on the equation of state and composition of matter at high densities. In this contribution we investigate the possibility that the dense cores of neutron stars could contain strange quarks either in a confined state (hyperonic matter) or in a deconfined one (strange quark matter) while fulfilling a set of constraints including the new maximum mass constraint. We account for the possible appearance of hyperons within an extended version of the density-dependent relativistic mean-field model, including the phi-meson interaction channel. Deconfined quark matter is described by the color superconducting three-flavor NJL model.

On the Cooling of the Neutron Star in Cassiopeia A

We demonstrate that the high-quality cooling data observed for the young neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A over the past 10 years--as well as all other reliably known temperature data of neutron stars--can be comfortably explained within the "nuclear medium cooling" scenario. The cooling rates of this scenario account for medium-modified one-pion exchange in dense matter and polarization effects in the pair-breaking formations of superfluid neutrons and protons. Crucial for the successful description of the observed data is a substantial reduction of the thermal conductivity, resulting from a suppression of both the electron and nucleon contributions to it by medium effects. We also find that possibly in as little as about ten years of continued observation, the data may tell whether or not fast cooling processes are active in this neutron star.

Meson formfactor scheme for the chiral Lagrangian approach to J/psi breakup cross sections motivated by a relativistic quark model

We suggest a new scheme for the introduction of formfactors for the SU(4) chiral meson Lagrangian approach to the J/psi breakup cross sections by pion and rho meson impact. This mesonic formfactor scheme respects the fact that on the quark level of description the contact and the meson exchange diagrams are constructed by so-called box and triangle diagrams which contain a different number of vertex functions for the quark-meson coupling. We present a model calculation for Gaussian vertex functions within the meson formfactor scheme and compare the results with those of the usual global formfactor model. We calibrate the new meson formfactor model with results for the pion impact processes from a relativistic quark model calculation by Ivanov et al. and present predictions for the rho-meson induced processes. We provide a fit formula for the resulting energy-dependent cross sections.
