On Fejér monotone sequences and nonexpansive mappings

The notion of Fejér monotonicity has proven to be a fruitful concept in fixed point theory and optimization. In this paper, we present new conditions sufficient for convergence of Fejér monotone sequences and we also provide applications to the study of nonexpansive mappings. Various examples illustrate our results.

On the local convergence of the Douglas-Rachford algorithm

We discuss the Douglas-Rachford algorithm to solve the feasibility problem for two closed sets $A,B$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We prove its local convergence to a fixed point when $A,B$ are finite unions of convex sets. We also show that for more general nonconvex sets the scheme may fail to converge and start to cycle, and may then even fail to solve the feasibility problem.

Characterizing arbitrarily slow convergence in the method of alternating projections

In 1997, Bauschke, Borwein, and Lewis have stated a trichotomy theorem that characterizes when the convergence of the method of alternating projections can be arbitrarily slow. However, there are two errors in their proof of this theorem. In this note, we show that although one of the errors is critical, the theorem itself is correct. We give a different proof that uses the multiplicative form of the spectral theorem, and the theorem holds in any real or complex Hilbert space, not just in a real Hilbert space.
