Measurement of the Spin Tune Using the Coherent Spin Motion of Polarized Proton in a Storage Ring

This paper reports the first spin tune measurement at high energies (24 GeV and 255 GeV) with a driven coherent spin motion. To maintain polarization in a polarized proton collider, it is important to know the spin tune of the polarized proton beam, which is defined as the number of full spin precessions per revolution. A nine-magnet spin flipper has demonstrated high spin-flip efficiency in the presence of two Siberian snakes [1]. The spin flipper drives a spin resonance with a given frequency (or tune) and strength. When the drive tune is close to the spin tune, the proton spin direction is not vertical anymore, but precesses around the vertical direction. By measuring the precession frequency of the horizontal component the spin tune can be precisely measured. A driven coherent spin motion and fast turn-by-turn polarization measurement are keys to the measurement. The vertical spin direction is restored after turning the spin flipper off and the polarization value is not affected by the measurement. The fact that this manipulation preserves the polarization makes it possible to measure the spin tune during operation of a high energy accelerator.

Coincident onset of charge density wave order at a quantum critical point in underdoped YBCO

The recently demonstrated x-ray scattering approach using a free electron laser with a high field pulsed magnet has opened new opportunities to explore the charge density wave (CDW) order in cuprate high temperature superconductors. Using this approach, we substantially degrade the superconductivity with magnetic fields up to 33 T to investigate the onset of CDW order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ at low temperatures near a putative quantum critical point (QCP) at $p_1\sim $ 0.08 holes per Cu. We find no CDW can be detected in a sample with a doping concentration less than $p_1$. Our results indicate that the onset of the CDW ground state lies inside the zero-field superconducting dome, and broken translational symmetry is associated with the putative QCP at $p_1$

Understanding Spin Configuration in the Geometrically Frustrated Magnet TbB$_{4}$: a Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering Study

The frustrated magnet has been regarded as a system that could be a promising host material for the quantum spin liquid (QSL). However, it is difficult to determine the spin configuration and the corresponding mechanism in this system, because of its geometrical frustration (i.e., crystal structure and symmetry). Herein, we systematically investigate one of the geometrically frustrated magnets, the TbB$_{4}$ compound. Using resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS), we explored its spin configuration, as well as Tb's quadrupole. Comprehensive evaluations of the temperature and photon energy / polarization dependences of the RSXS signals reveal the mechanism of spin reorientation upon cooling down, which is the sophisticated interplay between the Tb spin and the crystal symmetry rather than its orbit (quadrupole). Our results and their implications would further shed a light on the search for possible realization of QSL.

Modification of structural disorder by hydrostatic-pressure in superconducting YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.73}$ cuprate

Compelling efforts to improve the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) of superconductors have been made through high-pressure application. Understanding the underlying mechanism behind such improvements is critically important, however, much remains unclear. Here we studied ortho-III YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.73}$ (YBCO) using x-ray scattering under hydrostatic-pressure (HP) up to ~6.0 GPa. We found the reinforced oxygen order (OO) of YBCO under HP, revealing an oxygen rearrangement in the Cu-O layer, which evidently shows the charge transfer phenomenon between the CuO$_{2}$ plane and Cu-O layer. Concurrently, we also observed no disorder-pinned charge density wave (CDW) signature in CuO$_{2}$ plane under HP. This indicates that the oxygen rearrangement modifies the quenched disorder state in the CuO$_{2}$ plane. Using these results, we appropriately explain why pressure-condition can achieve higher $T_{c}$ compared with the optimal $T_{c}$ under ambient pressure in YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$. As an implication of these results, finally, we have discussed that the change in disorder could make it easier for YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+x}$ to undergo a transition to the nematic order under an external magnetic field.

Cross-calibration of GaAs deformation potentials and gradient-elastic tensors using photoluminescence and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum dot structures

Lattice matched GaAs/AlGaAs epitaxial structures with quantum dots are studied under static uniaxial stress applied either along the $[001]$ or $[110]$ crystal directions. We conduct simultaneous measurements of the spectral shifts in the photoluminescence of the bulk GaAs substrate, which relate to strain via deformation potentials $a$ and $b$, and the quadrupolar shifts in the optically detected nuclear magnetic resonance spectra of the quantum dots, which relate to the same strain via the gradient-elastic tensor $S_{ijkl}$. Measurements in two uniaxial stress configurations are used to derive the ratio $b/a=0.241\pm0.008$ in good agreement with previous studies on GaAs. Based on the previously estimated value of $a\approx-8.8$ eV we derive the product of the nuclear quadrupolar moment $Q$ and the $S$-tensor diagonal component in GaAs to be $QS_{11}\approx+0.76\times10^{-6}$ V for $^{75}$As and $QS_{11}\approx-0.37\times10^{-6}$ V for $^{69}$Ga nuclei. In our experiments the signs of $S_{11}$ are directly measurable, which was not possible in the earlier nuclear acoustic resonance studies. Our $QS_{11}$ values are a factor of $\sim$1.4 smaller than those derived from the nuclear acoustic resonance experiments [Phys. Rev. B 10, 4244 (1974)]. The gradient-elastic tensor values measured in this work can be applied in structural analysis of strained III-V semiconductor nanostructures via accurate modelling of their magnetic resonance spectra.

Doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

The magnetic correlations within the cuprates have undergone intense scrutiny as part of efforts to understand high temperature superconductivity. We explore the evolution of the magnetic correlations along the nodal direction of the Brillouin zone in La2-xSrxCuO4, spanning the doping phase diagram from the anti-ferromagnetic Mott insulator at x = 0 to the metallic phase at x = 0.26. Magnetic excitations along this direction are found to be systematically softened and broadened with doping, at a higher rate than the excitations along the anti-nodal direction. This phenomenology is discussed in terms of the nature of the magnetism in the doped cuprates. Survival of the high energy magnetic excitations, even in the overdoped regime, indicates that these excitations are marginal to pairing, while the influence of the low energy excitations remains ambiguous.

AccConF: An Access Control Framework for Leveraging In-Network Cached Data in ICNs

The fast-growing Internet traffic is increasingly becoming content-based and driven by mobile users, with users more interested in data rather than its source. This has precipitated the need for an information-centric Internet architecture. Research in information-centric networks (ICNs) have resulted in novel architectures, e.g., CCN/NDN, DONA, and PSIRP/PURSUIT; all agree on named data based addressing and pervasive caching as integral design components. With network-wide content caching, enforcement of content access control policies become non-trivial. Each caching node in the network needs to enforce access control policies with the help of the content provider. This becomes inefficient and prone to unbounded latencies especially during provider outages. In this paper, we propose an efficient access control framework for ICN, which allows legitimate users to access and use the cached content directly, and does not require verification/authentication by an online provider authentication server or the content serving router. This framework would help reduce the impact of system down-time from server outages and reduce delivery latency by leveraging caching while guaranteeing access only to legitimate users. Experimental/simulation results demonstrate the suitability of this scheme for all users, but particularly for mobile users, especially in terms of the security and latency overheads.

A Storage Ring Experiment to Detect a Proton Electric Dipole Moment

A new experiment is described to detect a permanent electric dipole moment of the proton with a sensitivity of $10^{-29}e\cdot$cm by using polarized "magic" momentum $0.7$~GeV/c protons in an all-electric storage ring. Systematic errors relevant to the experiment are discussed and techniques to address them are presented. The measurement is sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model at the scale of 3000~TeV.

Fast neutron scattering on Gallium target at 14.8 MeV

Benchmarking of evaluated nuclear data libraries was performed for $\sim 14.8$ MeV neutrons on Gallium targets. The experiments were performed at China Institute of Atomic Energy(CIAE). Solid samples of natural Gallium (3.2 cm and 6.4 cm thick) were bombarded by $\sim 14.8$ MeV neutrons and leakage neutron energy spectra were measured at 60$^{\circ}$ and 120$^{\circ}$. The measured spectra are rather well reproduced by MCNP-4C simulations with the CENDL-3.1, ENDF/B-VII and JENDL-4.0 evaluated nuclear data libraries, except for the inelastic contributions around $E_{n} = 10-13$ MeV. All three libraries significantly underestimate the inelastic contributions. The inelastic contributions are further studied, using the Talys simulation code and the experimental spectra are reproduced reasonably well in the whole energy range by the Talys calculation, including the inelastic contributions.

Search for a Light Sterile Neutrino at Daya Bay

A search for light sterile neutrino mixing was performed with the first 217 days of data from the Daya Bay Reactor Antineutrino Experiment. The experiment's unique configuration of multiple baselines from six 2.9~GW$_{\rm th}$ nuclear reactors to six antineutrino detectors deployed in two near (effective baselines 512~m and 561~m) and one far (1579~m) underground experimental halls makes it possible to test for oscillations to a fourth (sterile) neutrino in the $10^{\rm -3}~{\rm eV}^{2} < |Δm_{41}^{2}| < 0.3~{\rm eV}^{2}$ range. The relative spectral distortion due to electron antineutrino disappearance was found to be consistent with that of the three-flavor oscillation model. The derived limits on $\sin^22θ_{14}$ cover the $10^{-3}~{\rm eV}^{2} \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1~{\rm eV}^{2}$ region, which was largely unexplored.

Independent Measurement of Theta13 via Neutron Capture on Hydrogen at Daya Bay

A new measurement of the $θ_{13}$ mixing angle has been obtained at the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment via the detection of inverse beta decays tagged by neutron capture on hydrogen. The antineutrino events for hydrogen capture are distinct from those for gadolinium capture with largely different systematic uncertainties, allowing a determination independent of the gadolinium-capture result and an improvement on the precision of $θ_{13}$ measurement. With a 217-day antineutrino data set obtained with six antineutrino detectors and from six 2.9 GW$_{th}$ reactors, the rate deficit observed at the far hall is interpreted as $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.083\pm0.018$ in the three-flavor oscillation model. When combined with the gadolinium-capture result from Daya Bay, we obtain $\sin^22θ_{13}=0.089\pm0.008$ as the final result for the six-antineutrino-detector configuration of the Daya Bay experiment.

Optimal initiation of a GLWB in a variable annuity: no arbitrage approach

This paper offers a financial economic perspective on the optimal time (and age) at which the owner of a Variable Annuity (VA) policy with a Guaranteed Living Withdrawal Benefit (GLWB) rider should initiate guaranteed lifetime income payments. We abstract from utility, bequest and consumption preference issues by treating the VA as liquid and tradable. This allows us to use an American option pricing framework to derive a so-called optimal initiation region. Our main practical finding is that given current design parameters in which volatility (asset allocation) is restricted to less than 20%, while guaranteed payout rates (GPR) as well as bonus (roll-up) rates are less than 5%, GLWBs that are in-the-money should be turned on by the late 50s and certainly the early 60s. The exception to the rule is when a non-constant GPR is about to increase (soon) to a higher age band, in which case the optimal policy is to wait until the new GPR is hit and then initiate immediately. Also, to offer a different perspective, we invert the model and solve for the bonus (roll-up) rate that is required to justify delaying initiation at any age. We find that the required bonus is quite high and more than what is currently promised by existing products. Our methodology and results should be of interest to researchers as well as to the individuals that collectively have over \$1 USD trillion in aggregate invested in these products. We conclude by suggesting that much of the non-initiation at older age is irrational (which obviously benefits the insurance industry.)

Direct observation of room temperature high-energy resonant excitonic effects in graphene

Using a combination of ultraviolet-vacuum ultraviolet reflectivity and spectroscopic ellipsometry, we observe a resonant exciton at an unusually high energy of 6.3eV in epitaxial graphene. Surprisingly, the resonant exciton occurs at room temperature and for a very large number of graphene layers $N$$\approx$75, thus suggesting a poor screening in graphene. The optical conductivity ($σ_1$) of resonant exciton scales linearly with number of graphene layer (up to \emph{at least} 8 layers) implying quantum character of electrons in graphene. Furthermore, a prominent excitation at 5.4eV, which is a mixture of interband transitions from $π$ to $π^{*}$ at the M point and a $π$ plasmonic excitation, is observed. In contrast, for graphite the resonant exciton is not observable but strong interband transitions are seen instead. Supported by theoretical calculations, for $N \leq$ 28 the $σ_1$ is dominated by the resonant exciton, while for $N >$ 28 it is a mixture between exitonic and interband transitions. The latter is characteristic for graphite, indicating a crossover in the electronic structure. Our study shows that important elementary excitations in graphene occur at high binding energies and elucidate the differences in the way electrons interact in graphene and graphite.

Performance of Equal Phase-Shift Search for One Iteration

Grover presented the phase-shift search by replacing the selective inversions by selective phase shifts of $π/3$. In this paper, we investigate the phase-shift search with general equal phase shifts. We show that for small uncertainties, the failure probability of the Phase-$π/3$ search is smaller than the general phase-shift search and for large uncertainties, the success probability of the large phase-shift search is larger than the Phase-$π/3$ search. Therefore, the large phase-shift search is suitable for large-size of databases.

SLOCC classification for nine families of four-qubits

In Phys. Rev. A 62, 062314 (2000), Dür, Vidal and Cirac indicated that there are infinitely many SLOCC classes for four qubits. Verstraete, Dehaene, and Verschelde in Phys. Rev. A 65, 052112 (2002) proposed nine families of states corresponding to nine different ways of entangling four qubits. In Phys. Rev. A 75, 022318 (2007), Lamata et al. reported that there are eight true SLOCC entanglement classes of four qubits up to permutations of the qubits. In this paper, we investigate SLOCC classification of the nine families proposed by Verstraete, Dehaene and Verschelde, and distinguish 49 true SLOCC entanglement classes from them.

Stochastic local operations and classical communication properties of the n-qubit symmetric Dicke states

Recently, several schemes for the experimental creation of Dicke states were described. In this paper, we show that all the $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke states with $l$ ($2\leq l\leq (n-2)$) excitations are inequivalent to the $% |GHZ>$ state or the $|W>$ state under SLOCC, that the even $n$% -qubit symmetric Dicke state with $n/2$ excitations is inequivalent to any even $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke state with $l\neq n/2$ excitations under SLOCC, and that all the $n$-qubit symmetric Dicke states with $l$ ($2\leq l\leq (n-2)$) excitations satisfy Coffman, Kundu and Wootters' generalized monogamy inequality $C_{12}^{2}+...+C_{1n}^{2}<C_{1(2...n)}^{2}<1$.
