Excitonic nonlinear absorption in CdS nanocrystals studied using Z-scan technique

Irradiance dependence of excitonic nonlinear absorption in Cadmium Sulfide (CdS) nanocrystals has been studied by using Z-scan method with nanosecond laser pulses. The wavelength dependence of nonlinear absorption has also been measured near the excitonic transition of 1S(e)-1S3/2(h). We observe the saturable absorption, which can be described by a third-order and a fifth-order nonlinear process for both 3.0-nm-sized and 2.3-nm-sized CdS nanocrystals. The experimental results show that the excitonic nonlinear absorption of CdS nanocrystals is greatly enhanced with decreasing particle size. A two-level model is utilized to explain both irradiance and wavelength dependence of the excitonic nonlinearity.

Ultrafast absorptive and refractive nonlinearities in multi-walled carbon nanotube film

By using femtosecond laser pulses at a wavelength range from 720 to 780 nm, we have observed absorptive and refractive nonlinearities in a film of multi-walled carbon nanotubes grown mainly along the direction perpendicular to the surface of quartz substrate. The Z-scans show that both absorptive and refractive nonlinearities are of negative and cubic nature in the laser irradiance range from a few to 300 GW/cm^2. The magnitude of the third-order nonlinear susceptibility,chi-(3), is of an order of 10^-11 esu. The degenerate pump-probe measurement reveals a relaxation time of 2 ps.

Ultrafast Optical Nonlinearity in PMMA-TiO2 Nanocomposites

With 780-nm, 250-fs laser pulses, ultrafast optical nonlinearity has been observed in a series of thin films containing PMMA-TiO2 nanocomposites, which are synthesized by a simple technique of in-situ sol-gel/polymerization. The best figures of merit are found in one of the films prepared with a 60% weight percentage of titanium isopropoxide. TEM shows the presence of the 5-nm-diameter particles in the film. The observed optical nonlinearity has a recovery time of ~1.5 ps. These findings suggest the strong potential of PMMA-TiO2 nanocomposites for all-optical switching.

Nonlinear optical performances of supramolecular 1-(4-Methyl)- piperazinylfullerene[60] - containing polysiloxane

The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of 1-(4-Methyl)- piperazinylfullerene[60] (MPF) incorporated with a polysiloxane copolymer denoted as PSI-46 have been studied using nanosecond laser pulses at 532-nm wavelength. The optical limiting performance of MPF itself is poorer than that of its parent C60, while the contribution of PSI-46 attached to the MPF shows marginally improvement from the ratio of MPF/PSI-46(1:2) to MPF/PSI-46(1:6). However, the effect can be neglected to the MPF optical limiting responses. The photoluminescence emission of MPF-containing polymers was slightly improved in comparison with that of MPF. The possible sources for the slightly improvement in the NLO behaviour are discussed.

Analysis of Hamiltonian Dynamics of Dispersion-Managed Coupled Breathers in Optical Transmission System

We theoretically derive the Hamiltonian dynamics of dispersion-managed coupled breathers in optical transmission system as a result of phases-plane dynamics of the system. We analytically show that the contribution of a perturbation term caused by a noise sourced by amplifiers in optical fiber can influence the amplitudes and chirps of the pulses dynamics. We also find that the coupled breathers dynamics depent on a certain relationship of the chirps and amplitudes. The results of the perturbed coupled NLS are then reduced to that in the unperturbed system and the single NLS case.
