Projectile Fragmentation of $^{86}$Kr at 64 MeV/nucleon

We measured fragmentation cross sections produced using the primary beam of $^{86}$Kr at 64 MeV/nucleon on $^9$Be and $^{181}$Ta targets. The cross sections were obtained by integrating the momentum distributions of isotopes with 25<Z<36 measured using the RIPS fragment separator at RIKEN. The cross-section ratios obtained with the $^{181}$Ta and $^{9}$Be targets depend on the fragment masses, contrary to the simple geometrical models. We compared the extracted cross sections to EPAX; an empirical parameterization of fragmentation cross sections. Predictions from current EPAX parameterization severely overestimate the production cross sections of very neutron-rich isotopes. Attempts to obtain another set of EPAX parameters specific to the reaction studied here, to extrapolate the neutron-rich nuclei more accurately have not been very successful, suggesting that accurate predictions of production cross sections of nuclei far from the valley of stability require information of nuclear properties which are not present in EPAX.

Projectile fragmentation reactions and production of nuclei near the neutron drip-line

The reaction mechanism of projectile fragmentation at intermediate energies has been investigated observing the target dependence of the production cross sections of very neutron-rich nuclei. Measurement of longitudinal momentum distributions of projectile-like fragments within a wide range of fragment mass and its charge was performed using a hundred-MeV/n $^{40}$Ar beam incident on Be and Ta targets. By measurement of fragment momentum distribution, a parabolic mass dependence of momentum peak shift was observed in the results of both targets, and a phenomenon of light-fragment acceleration was found only in the Be-target data. The analysis of production cross sections revealed an obvious enhancement of the target dependence except target size effect when the neutron excess is increased. This result implies the breakdown of factorization (BOF) of production cross sections for very neutron-rich nuclei near the drip line.

Magnetic order in the normal state of the archetypal high-Tc superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4

We report detailed bulk magnetization measurements of the normal state in the high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductor La2-xSrxCuO4. A magnetic order in the form of hysteresis in the low field magnetization was observed at temperatures well above Tc but below the pseudogap temperature. The order arises from the interaction of magnetic domains, and the doping (x) dependence of its onset and strength broadly follows that of Tc(x).

A canonical formalism of f(T)-type gravity in terms of Lie derivatives

A canonical formalism of f(R)-type gravity is proposed, resolving the problem in the formalism of Buchbinder and Lyakhovich(BL). The new coordinates corresponding to the time derivatives of the metric are taken to be its Lie derivatives which is the same as in BL. The momenta canonically conjugate to them and Hamiltonian density are defined similarly to the formalism of Ostrogradski. It is shown that our method surely resolves the problem of BL.

Thermo-magnetic hysteretic properties resembling superconductivity in the normal state of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4

We have performed detailed magnetic and thermal hysteresis experiments in the normal-state magnetization of La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 single crystal. Using a combination of in-field and in-zero-magnetic-field measurements at different stages of thermal history of the sample, we identified subtle effects associated with the presence of magnetic signatures which resemble those below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc=36 K) but survive up to 250 K.

Coulomb and nuclear breakup of a halo nucleus 11Be

Breakup reactions of the one-neutron halo nucleus 11Be on Pb and C targets at about 70 MeV/u have been investigated by measuring the momentum vectors of the incident 11Be, outgoing 10Be, and neutron in coincidence. The relative energy spectra as well as the angular distributions of the 10Be+n center of mass have been extracted for both targets. For the breakup on Pb target, the selection of forward scattering angles is found to be effective to extract almost purely the first-order E1 Coulomb breakup component, and to exclude the nuclear contribution and higher-order Coulomb breakup components. This angle-selected energy spectrum is thus used to deduce the spectroscopic factor for the 10Be(0+) 2s_1/2 configuration in 11Be which is found to be 0.72+-0.04 with B(E1) up to Ex=4 MeV of 1.05+-0.06 e2fm2. The energy weighted E1 strength up to Ex=4 MeV explains 70+-10% of the cluster sum rule, consistent with the obtained spectroscopic factor. The non-energy weighted sum rule is used to extract the root mean square distance of the halo neutron to be 5.77(16) fm, consistent with previously known values. In the breakup with C target, we have observed the excitations to the known unbound states in 11Be at Ex=1.78 MeV and 3.41 MeV. Angular distributions for these states show the diffraction pattern characteristic of L=2 transitions, resulting in J^pi =(3/2,5/2)+ assignment for these states. We finally find that even for the C target the E1 Coulomb direct breakup mechanism becomes dominant at very forward angles.

Cosmology in a Higher-Curvature Gravity

We investigated the cosmology in a higher-curvature gravity where the dimensionality of spacetime gives rise to only quantitative difference, contrary to Einstein gravity. We found exponential type solutions for flat isotropic and homogeneous vacuum universe for the case in which the higher-curvature term in the Lagrangian density is quadratic in the scalar curvature, $ξR^2$. The solutions are classified according to the sign of the cosmological constant, $Λ$, and the magnitude of $Λξ$. For these solutions 3-dimensional space has a specific feature in that the solutions are independent of the higher curvature term. For the universe filled with perfect fluid, numerical solutions are investigated for various values of the parameter $ξ$. Evolutions of the universes in different dimensionality of spacetime are compared.

Anomalously hindered E2 strength B(E2;2_1^+ -> 0^+) in 16C

The electric quadrupole transition from the first 2+ state to the ground 0+ state in 16C is studied through measurement of the lifetime by a recoil shadow method applied to inelastically scattered radioactive 16C nuclei. The measured lifetime is 75 +- 23 ps, corresponding to a B(E2;2_1+ -> 0^+) value of 0.63 +- 0.19 e2fm4, or 0.26 +- 0.08 Weisskopf units. The transition strength is found to be anomalously small compared to the empirically predicted value.

Non-equilibrium and non-linear stationary state in thermoelectric materials

Efficiency of thermoelectric materials is characterized by the figure of merit Z. Z has been believed to be a peculiar material constant. However, the accurate measurements in the present work reveal that Z has large size dependence and a non-linear temperature distribution appears as stationary state in the thermoelectric material. The observation of these phenomena is achieved by the Harman method. This method is the most appropriate way to investigate the thermoelectric properties because the dc and ac resistances are measured by the same electrode configuration. We describe the anomalous thermoelectric properties observed in mainly (Bi,Sb)2Te3 by the Harman method and then insist that Z is not the peculiar material constant but must be defined as the physical quantity dependent of the size and the position in the material.
