Lindblad dynamics of the damped and forced quantum harmonic oscillator: General solution

The quantum dynamics of a damped and forced harmonic oscillator described by a Lindblad master equation is analyzed. The master equation is converted into a matrix-vector representation and the resulting non-Hermitian Schrödinger equation is solved by Lie-algebraic techniques allowing the construction of the general solution for the density operator.

Lindblad dynamics of the damped and forced quantum harmonic oscillator

The quantum dynamics of a damped and forced harmonic oscillator is investigated in terms of a Lindblad master equation. Elementary algebraic techniques are employed allowing for example to analyze the long time behavior, i.e. the quantum limit cycle. The time evolution of various expectation values is obtained in closed form as well as the entropy and the Husimi phase space distribution. We also discuss the related description in terms of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian.

Interaction-induced decoherence in non-Hermitian quantum walks of ultracold Bosons

We study the influence of particle interaction on a quantum walk on a bipartite one-dimensional lattice with decay from every second site. The corresponding non-interacting (linear) system has been shown to have a topological transition described by the average displacement before decay. Here we use this topological quantity to distinguish coherent quantum dynamics from incoherent classical dynamics caused by a breaking of the translational symmetry. We furthermore analyze the behavior by means of a rate equation providing a quantitative description of the incoherent nonlinear dynamics.

Quantum dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven bichromatic optical lattices

We study the dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted and driven optical superlattices. For a bichromatic lattice, each Bloch band split up into two minibands such that the dynamics is governed by the interplay of Bloch oscillations and transitions between the bands. Thus, bichromatic potentials provide an excellent model system for the study of nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling and allow for a variety of applications in matter wave interferometry and quantum metrology. In the present paper we investigate the coherent dynamics of an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate as well as its stability. Different mechanisms of instability are discussed, which lead to a rapid depletion of the condensate.

Nonlinear Landau-Zener tunneling in quantum phase space

We present a detailed analysis of the Landau-Zener problem for an interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a time-varying double-well trap, especially focussing on the relation between the full many-particle problem and the mean-field approximation. Due to the nonlinear self-interaction a dynamical instability occurs, which leads to a breakdown of adiabaticity condition and thus fundamentally alters the dynamics. It is shown that essentially all features of the Landau-Zener problem including the depletion of the condensate mode can be already understood within a semiclassical phase space picture. In particular, this treatment resolves the formerly imputed incommutability of the adiabatic and semiclassical limits. The possibility to exploit Landau-Zener sweeps to generate squeezed states for spectroscopic tasks is analysed in detail. Moreover, we study the influence of phase noise and propose a Landau-Zener sweep as a sensitive, yet readily implementable probe for decoherence, since this has a significant effect on the transition rate for slow parameter variations.

Nonlinear resonant tunneling of Bose-Einstein condensates in tilted optical lattices

We study the tunneling decay of a Bose-Einstein condensate out of tilted optical lattices within the mean-field approximation. We introduce a novel method to calculate also excited resonance eigenstates of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, based on a grid relaxation procedure with complex absorbing potentials. This algorithm works efficiently in a wide range of parameters where established methods fail. It allows us to study the effects of the nonlinearity in detail in the regime of resonant tunneling, where the decay rate is enhanced by resonant coupling to excited unstable states.

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation for the delta-comb potential: quasi-classical chaos and bifurcations of periodic stationary solutions

The nonlinear Schroedinger equation is studied for a periodic sequence of delta-potentials (a delta-comb) or narrow Gaussian potentials. For the delta-comb the time-independent nonlinear Schroedinger equation can be solved analytically in terms of Jacobi elliptic functions and thus provides useful insight into the features of nonlinear stationary states of periodic potentials. Phenomena well-known from classical chaos are found, such as a bifurcation of periodic stationary states and a transition to spatial chaos. The relation of new features of nonlinear Bloch bands, such as looped and period doubled bands, are analyzed in detail. An analytic expression for the critical nonlinearity for the emergence of looped bands is derived. The results for the delta-comb are generalized to a more realistic potential consisting of a periodic sequence of narrow Gaussian peaks and the dynamical stability of periodic solutions in a Gaussian comb is discussed.

Beyond mean-field dynamics of small Bose-Hubbard systems based on the number-conserving phase space approach

The number-conserving quantum phase space description of the Bose-Hubbard model is discussed for the illustrative case of two and three modes, as well as the generalization of the two-mode case to an open quantum system. The phase-space description based on generalized SU(M) coherent states yields a Liouvillian flow in the macroscopic limit, which can be efficiently simulated using Monte Carlo methods even for large systems. We show that this description clearly goes beyond the common mean-field limit. In particular it resolves well-known problems where the common mean-field approach fails, like the description of dynamical instabilities and chaotic dynamics. Moreover, it provides a valuable tool for a semi-classical approximation of many interesting quantities, which depend on higher moments of the quantum state and are therefore not accessible within the common approach. As a prominent example, we analyse the depletion and heating of the condensate. A comparison to methods ignoring the fixed particle number shows that in this case artificial number fluctuations lead to ambiguities and large deviations even for quite simple examples.

Mean-field dynamics of a non-Hermitian Bose-Hubbard dimer

We investigate an $N$-particle Bose-Hubbard dimer with an additional effective decay term in one of the sites. A mean-field approximation for this non-Hermitian many-particle system is derived, based on a coherent state approximation. The resulting nonlinear, non-Hermitian two-level dynamics, in particular the fixed point structures showing characteristic modifications of the self-trapping transition, are analyzed. The mean-field dynamics is found to be in reasonable agreement with the full many-particle evolution.

Resonance solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation in an open double-well potential

The resonance states and the decay dynamics of the nonlinear Schrödinger (or Gross-Pitaevskii) equation are studied for a simple, however flexible model system, the double delta-shell potential. This model allows analytical solutions and provides insight into the influence of the nonlinearity on the decay dynamics. The bifurcation scenario of the resonance states is discussed, as well as their dynamical stability properties. A discrete approximation using a biorthogonal basis is suggested which allows an accurate description even for only two basis states in terms of a nonlinear, nonhermitian matrix problem.

Barrier transmission for the Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation: Surprises of nonlinear transport

In this communication we report on a peculiar property of barrier transmission that systems governed by the nonlinear Schroedinger equation share with the linear one: For unit transmission the potential can be divided at an arbitrary point into two sub-potentials, a left and a right one, which have exactly the same transmission. This is a rare case of an exact property of a nonlinear wave function which will be of interest, e.g., for studies of coherent transport of Bose-Einstein condensates through mesoscopic waveguide

A non-Hermitian $PT-$symmetric Bose-Hubbard model: eigenvalue rings from unfolding higher-order exceptional points

We study a non-Hermitian $PT-$symmetric generalization of an $N$-particle, two-mode Bose-Hubbard system, modeling for example a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double well potential coupled to a continuum via a sink in one of the wells and a source in the other. The effect of the interplay between the particle interaction and the non-Hermiticity on characteristic features of the spectrum is analyzed drawing special attention to the occurrence and unfolding of exceptional points (EPs). We find that for vanishing particle interaction there are only two EPs of order $N+1$ which under perturbation unfold either into $[(N+1)/2]$ eigenvalue pairs (and in case of $N+1$ odd, into an additional zero-eigenvalue) or into eigenvalue triplets (third-order eigenvalue rings) and $(N+1)\mod 3$ single eigenvalues, depending on the direction of the perturbation in parameter space. This behavior is described analytically using perturbational techniques. More general EP unfoldings into eigenvalue rings up to $(N+1)$th order are indicated.

Barrier transmission for the one-dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation: resonances and transmission profiles

The stationary nonlinear Schrödinger equation (or Gross-Pitaevskii equation) for one-dimensional potential scattering is studied. The nonlinear transmission function shows a distorted profile, which differs from the Lorentzian one found in the linear case. This nonlinear profile function is analyzed and related to Siegert type complex resonances. It is shown, that the characteristic nonlinear profile function can be conveniently described in terms of skeleton functions depending on a few instructive parameters. These skeleton functions also determine the decay behavior of the underlying resonance state. Furthermore we extend the Siegert method for calculating resonances, which provides a convenient recipe for calculating nonlinear resonances. Applications to a double Gaussian barrier and a square well potential illustrate our analysis.

Exact number conserving phase-space dynamics of the M-site Bose-Hubbard model

The dynamics of M-site, N-particle Bose-Hubbard systems is described in quantum phase space constructed in terms of generalized SU(M) coherent states. These states have a special significance for these systems as they describe fully condensed states. Based on the differential algebra developed by Gilmore, we derive an explicit evolution equation for the (generalized) Husimi-(Q)- and Glauber-Sudarshan-(P)-distributions. Most remarkably, these evolution equations turn out to be second order differential equations where the second order terms scale as 1/N with the particle number. For large N the evolution reduces to a (classical) Liouvillian dynamics. The phase space approach thus provides a distinguished instrument to explore the mean-field many-particle crossover. In addition, the thermodynamic Bloch equation is analyzed using similar techniques.

Semiclassical quantization of an N-particle Bose-Hubbard model

A semiclassical Bohr-Sommerfeld approximation is derived for an N-particle, two-mode Bose-Hubbard system modeling a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential. This semiclassical description is based on the `classical' dynamics of the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation and is expected to be valid for large N. We demonstrate the possibility to reconstruct quantum properties of the N-particle system from the mean-field dynamics. The resulting semiclassical eigenvalues and eigenstates are found to be in very good agreement with the exact ones, even for small values of N, both for subcritical and supercritical particle interaction strength where tunneling has to be taken into account.

Classical and quantum features of the superfluid to Mott insulator transition

We analyze the correspondence of many-particle and mean-field dynamics for a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. Representing many-particle quantum states by a classical phase space ensemble instead of one single mean-field trajectory and taking into account the quantization of the density by a modified integer Gross-Pitaevskii equation, it is possible to simulate the superfluid to Mott insulator transition and other phenomena purely classically. This approach can be easily extended to higher particle numbers and multidimensional lattices. Moreover it provides an excellent tool to classify true quantum features and to analyze the mean-field -- many particle correspondence.

Quantum mechanics on a circle: Husimi phase space distributions and semiclassical coherent state propagators

We discuss some basic tools for an analysis of one-dimensionalquantum systems defined on a cyclic coordinate space. The basic features of the generalized coherent states, the complexifier coherent states are reviewed. These states are then used to define the corresponding (quasi)densities in phase space. The properties of these generalized Husimi distributions are discussed, in particular their zeros.Furthermore, the use of the complexifier coherent states for a semiclassical analysis is demonstrated by deriving a semiclassical coherent state propagator in phase space.

Bose-Einstein condensates in accelerated double-periodic optical lattices: Coupling and Crossing of resonances

We study the properties of coupled linear and nonlinear resonances. The fundamental phenomena and the level crossing scenarios are introduced for a nonlinear two-level system with one decaying state, describing the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a mean-field approximation (Gross-Pitaevskii or nonlinear Schroedinger equation). An important application of the discussed concepts is the dynamics of a condensate in tilted optical lattices. In particular the properties of resonance eigenstates in double-periodic lattices are discussed, in the linear case as well as within mean-field theory. The decay is strongly altered, if an additional period-doubled lattice is introduced. Our analytic study is supported by numerical computations of nonlinear resonance states, and future applications of our findings for experiments with ultracold atoms are discussed.
