An Approach towards a Constituent Quark Model on the Light Cone

We use the vacuum expectation value of a Wegner-Wilson loop representing a fast moving quark-antiquark pair to derive the light cone Hamiltonian for a $q\bar q$ meson. We solve the corresponding Schrödinger equation for various trial wave functions. The result shows how confinement determines the meson mass and wave function for valence quarks on the light cone. We also parametrize the effect of the spin-dependent splitting for a light meson and charmonium. The correct chiral-symmetry breaking pattern for the pion mass is obtained due to the self-energy of the quark.

Transverse Momentum Broadening in Semi-inclusive DIS on Nuclei

Using a three stage model of hadron formation we calculate the change of the transverse momentum distribution of hadrons produced in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) on nuclei. In the first stage after its interaction with the virtual photon, the struck quark propagates quasi free in the nuclear environment undergoing multiple collisions with nucleons. During this stage it can acquire transverse momentum. In the second stage a prehadron is formed which has a very small elastic cross section with the nucleons. In the third stage the prehadron turns into a hadron. For HERMES energies, prehadron elastic scatterings contribute little to $p_\perp$-broadening. The acquired extra $Δp_\perp^2$ of hadrons can therefore be deduced entirely from the first stage of quasi free quark propagation with quark-nucleon collisions. We use this model to describe $π$-production on Ne, Kr, Xe and compare with the most recent HERMES preliminary data.

QCD Evolution of Jets in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

The quark-gluon plasma (QGP) can be explored in relativistic heavy ion collisions by the jet quenching signature, i.e. by the energy loss of a high energy quark or gluon traversing the plasma. We introduce a novel QCD evolution formalism in the leading logarithm approximation, where normal parton radiation is interleaved with scattering on the plasma gluons occuring at a similar time scale. The idea is elaborated in two approaches. One extends the DGLAP evolution equations for fragmentation functions to include scatterings in the medium, which facilitates numerical solutions for comparison with data and provides a basis for a Monte Carlo implementation. The other approach is more general by including also the transverse momentum dependence of the jet evolution, which allows a separation of the scales also for the scattering term and provides a basis for analytical investigations. The two approaches are shown to be related and give the same characteristic softening of the jet depending on the temperature of the plasma. A substantial effect is found at the RHIC energy and is further enhanced at LHC. Systematic studies of data on the energy loss could, therefore, demonstrate the existence of the QGP and probe its properties.

Azimuthal anisotropy of direct photons

The electromagnetic bremsstrahlung produced by a quark interacting with nucleons or nuclei is azimuthally asymmetric. In the light-cone dipole approach this effect is related to the orientation dependent dipole cross section. Such a radiation anisotropy is expected to contribute to the azimuthal asymmetry of direct photons in pA and AA collisions, as well as in DIS and in the production of dileptons.

Formulating Light Cone QCD on the Lattice

We present the near light cone Hamiltonian $H$ in lattice QCD depending on the parameter $η$, which gives the distance to the light cone. Since the vacuum has zero momentum we can derive an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ from $H$ which is only quadratic in the momenta and therefore solvable by standard methods. An approximate ground state wave functional is determined variationally in the limit $η\to 0$.

Hamiltonian Lattice QCD near the Light Cone

We give a status report of our work on light cone Hamiltonian lattice QCD. We have derived an effective Hamiltonian $H_{eff}$ which is only quadratic in the momenta and therefore can be simulated by standard methods. For this Hamiltonian we determine variationally an approximate ground state wave functional in the light cone limit.

Direct photons and dileptons via color dipoles

Drell-Yan dilepton pair production and inclusive direct photon production can be described within a unified framework in the color dipole approach. The inclusion of non-perturbative primordial transverse momenta and DGLAP evolution is studied. We successfully describe data for dilepton spectra from 800-GeV pp collisions, inclusive direct photon spectra for pp collisions at RHIC energies $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, and for $p\bar{p}$ collisions at Tevatron energies $\sqrt{s}=1.8$ TeV, in a formalism that is free from any extra parameters.

Direct photons at LHC

The DGLAP improved color dipole approach provides a good description of data for inclusive direct photon spectra at the energies of RHIC and Tevatron. Within the same framework we predict the transverse momentum distribution of direct photons at the CERN LHC energies.

RG flow of the Polyakov-loop potential: First status report

We study SU(2) Yang-Mills theory at finite temperature in the framework of the functional renormalization group. We concentrate on the effective potential for the Polyakov loop which serves as an order parameter for confinement. In this first status report, we focus on the behaviour of the effective Polyakov-loop potential at high temperatures. In addition to the standard perturbative result, our findings provide information about the ``RG improved'' backreactions of Polyakov-loop fluctuations on the potential. We demonstrate that these fluctuations establish the convexity of the effective potential.

Diquark Bose-Einstein Condensation and Nuclear Matter

We study a possible transition between symmetric nuclear matter and the diquark Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) matter at zero temperature. We find that chiral restoration transition is first order and coincides with deconfinement. We investigate various possible coexistence patterns which may emerge from the first order deconfinement phase transition by assuming different values for the critical deconfinement chemical potential. If deconfinement takes place at higher chemical potential, there exists a mixed phase of nuclear and chirally restored diquark BEC matter. This coexistence region extends over a large density region for a bigger diquark BEC or a weaker diquark-diquark interaction. For model parameters with heavy diquark in vaccum, phase transition to diquark matter becomes of second-order. We also show that in the case of precocious deconfinement, droplets of nucleons and droplets of chirally restored Bose-Einstein condensed diquarks coexist surrounded by non-trivial vacuum. We show that a early deconfinement and a weak repulsive diquark-diquark interaction soften the equation of state. We propose a scenario in which nuclear matter saturates due to the formation of the diquark BEC and deconfinement phenomena. In this picture, instead of repulsive vector-meson exchange the compressibility of the equation of state is related to a repulsive diquark-diquark interaction. In general, we emphasize the importance of a diquark BEC phase at rather low density before quark BCS-pairing transition.

Higher Twist Effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering on Nuclei

Particle production in deep inelastic scattering on nuclei is reduced due to absorption of the produced particles in the nucleus. The photon ejects a quark from a bound nucleon which propagates through the nucleus forming a prehadron before turning into a hadron. We calculate the higher twist effect in hadronization which dominates the $z \to 1$ region of fragmentation.

Influence of quark boundary conditions on the pion mass in finite volume

We calculate the mass shift for the pion in a finite volume with renormalization group (RG) methods in the framework of the quark-mesons model. In particular, we investigate the importance of the quark effects on the pion mass. As in lattice gauge theory, the choice of quark boundary conditions has a noticeable effect on the pion mass shift in small volumes, in addition to the shift due to pion interactions. We compare our results to chiral perturbation theory calculations and find differences due to the fact that chiral perturbation theory only considers pion effects in the finite volume.

Scaling properties of high p_T inclusive hadron production

We analyze the scaling properties of inclusive hadron production in proton-proton and in heavy ion collisions from fixed target to collider energies. At large transverse momentum p_T, the invariant cross section exhibits a power-like behavior Ed^3σ/d^3p\propto p_T^{-n} at fixed transverse x, x_T=2p_T/\sqrt{s}, and fixed center-of-mass scattering angle θ_{cm}. Knowledge of the exponent n allows one to draw conclusions about the production mechanisms of hadrons, which are poorly known, even at high p_T. We find that high-p_T hadrons are produced by different mechanisms at fixed-target and collider energies. For pions, higher-twist subprocesses where the pion is produced directly dominate at fixed target energy, while leading-twist partonic scattering plus fragmentation is the most important mechanism at collider energies. High-p_T baryons on the other hand appear to be produced by higher-twist mechanisms at all available energies. The higher-twist mechanism of direct proton production can be verified experimentally by testing whether high p_T protons are produced as single hadrons without accompanying secondaries. In addition, we find that medium-induced gluon radiation in heavy ion collisions can violate scaling.

Atomic Mass Dependence of Hadron Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering on Nuclei

Hadron production in lepton-nucleus deep inelastic scattering is studied in an absorption model. In the proposed model, the early stage of hadronization in the nuclear medium is dominated by prehadron formation and absorption, controlled by flavor-dependent formation lengths and absorption cross sections. Computations for hadron multiplicity ratios are presented and compared with the HERMES experimental data for pions, kaons, protons and antiprotons. The mass-number dependence of hadron attenuation is shown to be sensitive to the underlying hadronization dynamics. Contrary to common expectations for absorption models, a leading term proportional to A^{2/3} is found. Deviations from the leading behavior arise at large mass-numbers and large hadron fractional momenta.
