Characterization of VUV4 SiPM for Liquid Argon Detector

Particle detectors based on liquid argon are now recognised as an attractive technology for dark matter direct detection and coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering measurement. A program using a dual-phase liquid argon detector with a fiducial mass of 200~kg to detect coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering at Taishan Nuclear Power Plant has been proposed. SiPMs will be used as the photon sensor because of their high radio-purity and high photon detection efficiency. S13370-6050CN SiPM, made by Hamamatsu, is a candidate for the detector. In this paper, the characterisation of S13370-6050CN SiPM, including the cross talk and after pulse probabilities at liquid argon temperature and the temperature dependence of break down voltage, dark counting rate and relative quantum efficiency were presented.

Peculiarities of the Faraday effect in gold-nanodisk/iron-garnet heterostructures

In this paper, matters considering the immersion of gold nanoparticles inside a magnetic medium are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Three samples with periodic arrays of Au cylinders where studied: particles on a surface of the magnetic dielectric film, inside the magnetic film and directly under the magnetic film. The largest LSPR mediated Faraday rotation resonance enhancement takes place for the case of the nanoparticles submerged inside the magnetic film. Optimal place for nanoparticles is under the magnetic medium surface at 6 nm deep in the considered configurations. It is shown that the most influence on the Faraday rotation enhancement is produced by the magnetic properties of the medium between the nanoantennas. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical analysis.

Temperature Dependence of Magnetic Excitations: Terahertz Magnons above the Curie Temperature

When an ordered spin system of a given dimensionality undergoes a second order phase transition the dependence of the order parameter i.e. magnetization on temperature can be well-described by thermal excitations of elementary collective spin excitations (magnons). However, the behavior of magnons themselves, as a function of temperature and across the transition temperature TC, is an unknown issue. Utilizing spin-polarized high resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy we monitor the high-energy (terahertz) magnons, excited in an ultrathin ferromagnet, as a function of temperature. We show that the magnons' energy and lifetime decrease with temperature. The temperature-induced renormalization of the magnons' energy and lifetime depends on the wave vector. We provide quantitative results on the temperature-induced damping and discuss the possible mechanism e.g., multi-magnon scattering. A careful investigation of physical quantities determining the magnons' propagation indicates that terahertz magnons sustain their propagating character even at temperatures far above TC.

Gate-Voltage Control of Chemical Potential and Weak Anti-localization in Bismuth Selenide

We report that Bi$_2$Se$_3$ thin films can be epitaxially grown on SrTiO$_{3}$ substrates, which allow for very large tunablity in carrier density with a back-gate. The observed low field magnetoconductivity due to weak anti-localization (WAL) has a very weak gate-voltage dependence unless the electron density is reduced to very low values. Such a transition in WAL is correlated with unusual changes in longitudinal and Hall resistivities. Our results suggest much suppressed bulk conductivity at large negative gate-voltages and a possible role of surface states in the WAL phenomena. This work may pave a way for realizing three-dimensional topological insulators at ambient conditions.
