Results from a Prototype Chicane-Based Energy Spectrometer for a Linear Collider

The International Linear Collider and other proposed high energy e+ e- machines aim to measure with unprecedented precision Standard Model quantities and new, not yet discovered phenomena. One of the main requirements for achieving this goal is a measurement of the incident beam energy with an uncertainty close to 1e-4. This article presents the analysis of data from a prototype energy spectrometer commissioned in 2006--2007 in SLAC's End Station A beamline. The prototype was a 4-magnet chicane equipped with beam position monitors measuring small changes of the beam orbit through the chicane at different beam energies. A single bunch energy resolution close to 5e-4 was measured, which is satisfactory for most scenarios. We also report on the operational experience with the chicane-based spectrometer and suggest ways of improving its performance.

Polarimeters and Energy Spectrometers for the ILC Beam Delivery System

Any future high energy e+e- linear collider aims at precision measurements of Standard Model quantities as well as of new, not yet discovered phenomena. In order to pursue this physics programme, excellent detectors at the interaction region have to be complemented by beam diagnostics of unprecedented precision. This article gives an overview of current plans and issues for polarimeters and energy spectrometers at the International Linear Collider, which have been designed to fulfill the precision goals at a large range of beam energies from 45.6 GeV at the Z pole up to 250 GeV or, as an upgrade, up to 500 GeV.

ILC Beam Energy Measurement by means of Laser Compton Backscattering

A novel, non-invasive method of measuring the beam energy at the International Linear Collider is proposed. Laser light collides head-on with beam particles and either the energy of the Compton scattered electrons near the kinematic end-point is measured or the positions of the Compton backscattered $γ$-rays, the edge electrons and the unscattered beam particles are recorded. A compact layout for the Compton spectrometer is suggested. It consists of a bending magnet and position sensitive detectors operating in a large radiation environment. Several options for high spatial resolution detectors are discussed. Simulation studies support the use of an infrared or green laser and quartz fiber detectors to monitor the backscattered photons and edge electrons. Employing a cavity monitor, the beam particle position downstream of the magnet can be recorded with submicrometer precision. Such a scheme provides a feasible and promising method to access the incident beam energy with precisions of $10^{-4}$ or better on a bunch-to-bunch basis while the electron and positron beams are in collision.

Relativistic and Nonrelativistic Descriptions of Electron Energy Levels in a Static Magnetic Field

The physical consequences of the relativistic and nonrelativistic approaches to describe the energy levels of electrons which propagate in a static homogeneous magnetic field are considered. It is shown that for a given strength of the magnetic field, the quantized energy levels of the electrons calculated by nonrelativistic and relativistic equations differ substantially, up to few orders of magnitude for a magnetic field of about 1 Tesla. Experimental verification to resolve the discrepancy would be very welcome.

New Physics at the LHC: A Les Houches Report. Physics at Tev Colliders 2007 -- New Physics Working Group

We present a collection of signatures for physics beyond the standard model that need to be explored at the LHC. The signatures are organized according to the experimental objects that appear in the final state, and in particular the number of high pT leptons. Our report, which includes brief experimental and theoretical reviews as well as original results, summarizes the activities of the "New Physics'' working group for the "Physics at TeV Colliders" workshop (Les Houches, France, 11-29 June, 2007).

Prospects of a Search for a New Massless Neutral Gauge Boson at the ILC

Prospects to search for a new massless neutral gauge boson, the paraphoton, in e+ e- collisions at center-of-mass energies of 0.5 and 1 TeV are studied. The paraphoton naturally appears in models with abelian kinetic mixing. A possible realistic model independent lowest order effective Lagrangian contains magnetic interactions of the paraphoton with the Standard Model fermion fields. These interactions are proportional to the fermion mass and grow with energy, with however very weak paraphoton couplings to ordinary matter. At the ILC, a potentially interesting process to search for the paraphoton is its radiation off top quarks, so that the event topology to be searched for is a pair of acoplanar top quark jets with missing energy. By combining many discriminating features of signal and background events efficient paraphoton event selection was achieved allowing to set limits for the top-paraphoton coupling. Arguments in favor of the missing energy as the paraphoton with spin 1 are discussed.

Prospects of mass measurements for neutral MSSM Higgs bosons in the intense-coupling regime at a Linear Collider

We analyze the prospects for detecting the three neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model in the intense-coupling regime at e+e- colliders. Due to the small mass differences between the Higgs states in this regime and their relative large total decay widths, the discrimination between the particles is challenging at the LHC and in some cases even impossible. We propose to use the missing mass technique in the Higgs-strahlung process in e+e- collisions to distinguish between the two CP-even Higgs eigenstates h and H, relying on their b b-bar decay in the b,b-bar,l+,l- event sample. Ah and AH associated production is then studied in the 4b-jet event sample to probe the CP-odd A boson. At collider energies sqrt(s) = 300 GeV and an integrated luminosity of 500 fb-1, accuracies in the mass measurement of the CP-even Higgs bosons are expected to range from 100 to 300 MeV, while for the CP-odd A boson, accuracies of less than 500 MeV can be obtained.

Physics Interplay of the LHC and the ILC

Physics at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and the International e+e- Linear Collider (ILC) will be complementary in many respects, as has been demonstrated at previous generations of hadron and lepton colliders. This report addresses the possible interplay between the LHC and ILC in testing the Standard Model and in discovering and determining the origin of new physics. Mutual benefits for the physics programme at both machines can occur both at the level of a combined interpretation of Hadron Collider and Linear Collider data and at the level of combined analyses of the data, where results obtained at one machine can directly influence the way analyses are carried out at the other machine. Topics under study comprise the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics. The status of the work that has been carried out within the LHC / LC Study Group so far is summarised in this report. Possible topics for future studies are outlined.

Measurement of the $HZγ$ Coupling at the Future Linear \ee Collider

We examine the prospects for measuring the $H Z γ$ coupling of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson with a mass between 120 and 160 GeV at the future TESLA linear \ee collider, assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 ab$^{-1}$ and a center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV. We consider the Higgs boson produced in association with $ν_e \bar{ν_e}$ via the $W W$ fusion reaction $e^+e^- \to ν_e \bar{ν_e} H$, followed by the rare decay into a $Z$ boson and a photon, $H \to Z γ$. Accounting for all main background contributions, different selection procedures are discussed. Uncertainties on the \hZg branching fraction of approximately 48% (27%, 44%) can be achieved in unpolarised \ee collisions for $M_H$ = 120 (140, 160) GeV. With appropriate initial state polarisations $Δ$BF(\hZg)/BF(\hZg), or the precisions on the \hZg partial width, can be improved to 29% (17%, 27%) and provide valuable information on the $HZγ$ coupling. We regard our results as a convincing confirmation of the great potential of a linear collider to access and reliably measure important parameters of the Higgs boson despite initially overwhelming background with final state signature similar to the signal events.

SIMDET - Version 4 A Parametric Monte Carlo for a TESLA Detector

A new release of the parametric detector Monte Carlo program \verb+SIMDET+ (version 4.01) is now available. We describe the principles of operation and the usage of this program to simulate the response of a detector for the TESLA linear collider. The detector components are implemented according to the TESLA Technical Design Report. All detector component responses are treated in a realistic way using a parametrisation of results from the {\em ab initio} Monte Carlo program \verb+BRAHMS+. Pattern recognition is emulated using a complete cross reference between generated particles and detector response. Also, for charged particles, the covariance matrix and $dE/dx$ information are made available. An idealised energy flow algorithm defines the output of the program, consisting of particles generically classified as electrons, photons, muons, charged and neutral hadrons as well as unresolved clusters. The program parameters adjustable by the user are described in detail. User hooks inside the program and the output data structure are documented.

Single Top Production in $e^+ e^-$, $e^- e^-$, $γe$ and $γγ$ Collisions

Single top quark cross section evaluations for the complete sets of tree-level diagrams in the $e^+ e^-$, $e^- e^-$, $γe$ and $γγ$ modes of the next linear collider with unpolarized and polarized beams are performed within the Standard Model and beyond. From comparison of all possibilities we conclude that the process $γ_+ e^-_L \to e^- t \bar b$ is extremely favoured due to large cross section, no $t \bar t$ background, high degrees of beam polarization, and exceptional sensitivities to $V_{tb}$ and anomalous $Wtb$ couplings. Similar reasons favour the process $e^- e^- \to e^- ν_e \bar t b$ for probing top quark properties despite a considerably lower cross section. Less favourable are processes like $e^+ e^-, γγ\to e^- ν_e t \bar b$. Three processes were chosen to probe their sensitivity to anomalous $Wtb$ couplings, with best bounds found for $γ_+ e^-_L \to e^- t \bar b$ and $e^+_R e^-_R \to e^- ν_e t \bar b$.

Measuring the Higgs Branching Fraction into two Photons at Future Linear \ee Colliders

We examine the prospects for measuring the \gaga branching fraction of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 120 GeV at the future TESLA linear \ee collider, assuming an integrated luminosity of 1 ab$^{-1}$ and center-of-mass energies of 350 GeV and 500 GeV. The Higgs boson is produced in association with a fermion pair via the Higgsstrahlung process \ee $\to ZH$, with $Z \to$ \qq or \nn, or the WW fusion reaction $e^+e^- \to ν_e \bar{ν_e} H$. A relative uncertainty on BF(\hgg) of~16% can be achieved in unpolarized \ee collisions at $\sqrt{s}$=~500 GeV, while for $\sqrt{s}$=~350 GeV the expected precision is slightly poorer. With appropriate initial state polarizations $Δ$BF(\hgg)/BF(\hgg) can be improved to 10%. If this measurement is combined with the expected error for the total Higgs width, a precision of 10% on the \gaga Higgs boson partial width appears feasible.

Probe of the Wtb coupling in $t \bar t$ pair production at Linear Colliders

The Wtb vertex can be probed on future colliders in the processes of single top production (LHC, pp mode, NLC, $γe$ mode) and of top pair production (NLC, e^+ e^- mode). We analyse observables sensitive to anomalous Wtb couplings in the top pair production process of e^+ e^- collisions. In particular, forward-backward and spin-spin asymmetries of the top decay products and the asymmetry of the lepton energy spectum are considered. Possible bounds on anomalous couplings obtained are competitive to those expected from the upgraded Tevatron and LHC. The validity of the infinitely small width approximation for the three-body top decay is also studied in detail.

Branching Fraction Measurements of the SM Higgs with a Mass of 160 GeV at Future Linear \ee Colliders

Assuming an integrated luminosity of 500 fb$^{-1}$ and a center-of-mass energy of 350 GeV, we examine the prospects for measuring branching fractions of a Standard Model-like Higgs boson with a mass of 160 GeV at the future linear \ee collider TESLA when the Higgs is produced via the Higgsstrahlung mechanism, \ee \pfr HZ. We study in detail the precisions achievable for the branching fractions of the Higgs into WW$^*$, ZZ$^*$ and \bb. However, the measurement of BF(H \pfr \gaga) remains a great challence. Combined with the expected error for the inclusive Higgsstrahlung production rate the uncertainty for the total width of the Higgs is estimated.

Higgs Search in the WW* Decay Mode at Photon Linear Colliders

We present the results of calculations for the process gamma gamma -> W + 2 fermions at a future Photon Linear Collider (PLC). The calculations include at the same time the next-to-leading order Higgs signal and the complete tree level gauge boson background. We present numerical results in the intermediate mass Higgs region 140 GeV < M_H < 2M_W. We propose strategies for the determination of Higgs properties using the leptonic and hadronic final states for both polarized and unpolarized photon beams.

Single Top and Light Higgs at TeV Energy $γe$ Colliders

Results of complete tree level calculation of the single top and light Higgs production in the reaction $γe \to νb \bar{b} W$ at the Next Linear Collider are presented. In addition, the contributions of anomalous operators to the $Wtb$ and $WWH$ couplings are included into the complete 4-body consideration. The sensitivity for probing the structure of the couplings in a model independent way is analyzed.
