Many-chain Generalization of Gauge-Coupled Fermionic Systems

We present a many chain generalization of a recent work of ours, wherein an arbitrary number of fermionic chains are coupled via a Gauge interaction. Central to this construction is the role of an antisymmetric tensor which enters the couplings and helps define a pseudo-unitary transformation, that maps the models on to ``free fermi'' models with twisted boundary conditions.

Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: a renormalization group theory

We formulate the exact Wilsonian renormalization group for a system of interacting fermions on a lattice. The flow equations for all vertices of the Wilson effective action are expressed in form of the Polchinski equation. We apply this method to the Hubbard model on a square lattice using both zero- and finite- temperature methods. Truncating the effective action at the sixth term in fermionic variables we obtain the one-loop functional renormalization equations for the effective interaction. We find the temperature of the instability Tc^{RG} as function of doping. We calculate furthermore the renormalization of the angle-resolved correlation functions for the superconductivity (SC) and for the antiferromagnetism (AF). The dominant component of the SC correlations is of the type d while the AF fluctuations are of the type s Following the strength of both SC and AF fluctuation along the instability line we obtain the phase diagram. The temperature Tc^{RG} can be identified with the crossover temperature T{co} found in the underdoped regime of the high-temperature superconductors, while in the overdoped regime Tc^{RG} corresponds to the superconducting critical temperature.

SO(N) symmetries in the two--chain model of correlated fermions

The two-chain model of correlated fermions, appropriate e.g. for doped spin ladders or carbon nanotubes, is investigated in the weak-interaction limit. It is shown that the model scales to situations with high internal symmetries, generically SO(6), whereas on critical lines there is SO(5) or SO(3) symmetry. Consequences for the level spectroscopy of the model are discussed. In particular, the ``pi-mode'' is shown to be sixfold degenerate and contains both spin and charge excitations.

Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids

In these lecture notes, the basic physics of Fermi liquids and Luttinger liquids is presented. Fermi liquids are discussed both from a phenomenological viewpoint, in relation to microscopic approaches, and as renormalization group fixed points. Luttinger liquids are introduced using the bosonization formalism, and their essential differences with Fermi liquids are pointed out. Applications to transport effects, the effect of disorder, quantum spin chains, and spin ladders, both insulating and metallic, are given.

On the metal-insulator transition in the two-chain model of correlated fermions

The doping-induced metal-insulator transition in two-chain systems of correlated fermions is studied using a solvable limit of the t-J model and the fact that various strong- and weak-coupling limits of the two-chain model are in the same phase, i.e. have the same low-energy properties. It is shown that the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_ρtakes the universal value unity as the insulating state (half-filling) is approached, implying dominant d-type superconducting fluctuations, independently of the interaction strength. The crossover to insulating behavior of correlations as the transition is approached is discussed.

Interacting electrons with spin in a one-dimensional wire connected to leads

We investigate a one--dimensional wire of interacting electrons connected to one--dimensional noninteracting leads in the absence and in the presence of a backscattering potential. The ballistic wire separates the charge and spin parts of an incident electron even in the noninteracting leads. The Fourier transform of nonlocal correlation functions are computed for $T\gg ω$. In particular, this allows us to study the proximity effect, related to the Andreev reflection. A new type of proximity effect emerges when the wire has normally a tendency towards Wigner crystal formation. The latter is suppressed by the leads below a space--dependent crossover temperature; it gets dominated everywhere by the $2k_F$ CDW at $T 1/3$, the ratio $Var(R)/R^2$ stays always of the same order: it is equal to $L_T/L\ll 1$ in the high temperature limit, then saturates at 1/2 in the low temperature limit, indicating that the relative fluctuations of $R$ increase as one lowers the temperature.

Transport in a one-dimensional wire connected to leads and proximity effects

We investigate transport through a finite interacting wire connected to noninteracting leads. The conductance of the pure wire is not renormalized by the interactions for any spatial variation of the interaction parameters $u,K$, and not even for Coulomb interactions restricted to the wire. We rigorously relate the conductance to the transmission, that turns out to be perfect. If $K$ varies abruptly at the contacts, an electron incident on the wire is reflected into a series of partial spatially separated charges which sum up to unity. For attractive interactions, the reflection at the contact is similar to Andreev reflection on a gapless superconductor. This process affects the density-density or pairing correlation functions: they are enhanced on the bulk of the wire as in an infinite Luttinger liquid, then extend to the external noninteracting leads in a way reminiscent of the proximity effect. The effect of impurities is governed by the wire parameter but is affected by the leads close to the contacts. Our results give a possible explanation to recent experiments on quantum wires by Tarucha et al.

A new class of exactly solvable interacting fermion models in one dimension

We investigate a model containing two species of one-dimensional fermions interacting via a gauge field determined by the positions of all particles of the opposite species. The model can be solved exactly via a simple unitary transformation. Nevertheless, correlation functions exhibit nontrivial interaction-dependent exponents. A similar model defined on a lattice is introduced and solved. Various generalizations, e.g. to the case of internal symmetries of the fermions, are discussed. The present treatment also clarifies certain aspects of Luttinger's original solution of the ``Luttinger model''.

Transport through a single-band wire connected to measuring leads

Transport through a one-dimensional wire of interacting electrons connected to semi infinite leads is investigated using a bosonization approach. The dynamic nonlocal conductivity is rigorously expressed in terms of the transmission. For abrupt variations of the interaction parameters at the junctions, an incident electron is transmitted as a sequence of partial charges: the central wire acts as a Fabry-Pérot resonator. The dc conductance is shown to be given by the total transmission which turns out to be perfect. When the wire has a tendency towards superconducting order, partial Andreev reflection of an incident electron occurs. Finally, we study the role of a weak barrier at one contact or inside the wire by a renormalization group method at finite temperature. We compute the conductance in the presence of localized or extended disorder, and compare our results to recent experiments on quantum wires.

Weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice: a renormalization group theory

We study the weakly interacting Hubbard model on the square lattice using a one-loop renormalization group approach. The transition temperature T_c between the metallic and (nearly) ordered states is found. In the parquet regime, (T_c >> |mu|), the dominant correlations at temperatures below T_c are antiferromagnetic while in the BCS regime (T_c << |mu|) at T_c the d-wave singlet pairing susceptibility is most divergent.

Interacting electrons with spin in a one-dimensional dirty wire connected to leads

We investigate a one-dimensional wire of interacting electrons connected to semi-infinite leads in the absence and in the presence of a backscattering potential. An incident electron on the clean wire is perfectly transmitted into spatially separated spin and charge parts in the noninteracting leads, a result we extend to any finite-range interactions. The backscattering potential is renormalized in a non-universal way and therefore the reduction in the conductance is more complicated than the laws derived up to now: it has power laws as a function of temperature, wire length, and also the distance of a barrier to the contacts.

Magnetic states induced by electron-electron interactions in a plane quasiperiodic tiling

We consider the Hubbard model for electrons in a two-dimensional quasiperiodic tiling using the Hartree--Fock approximation. Numerical solutions are obtained for the first three square approximants of the perfect octagonal tiling. At half-filling, the magnetic state is antiferromagnetic. We calculate the distributions of local magnetizations and their dependence on the local environments as U (Hubbard repulsion strength) is varied. The inflation symmetry of quasicrystals results in a corresponding inflation symmetry of the magnetic configurations when passing from one tiling to the next in the progression towards the infinite quasicrystal.

Magnetic excitation spectrum of dimerized antiferromagnetic chains

Motivated by recent measurements on CuGeO$_3$ the spectrum of magnetic excitations of an antiferromagnetic $S=\frac{1}{2}$ chain with alternating coupling strength is investigated. Wave vector dependent magnons and a continuum with square root behavior at the band edges are found. The spectral density of the continua is calculated. Spin rotation symmetry fixes the gap of the continuum to be twice the elementary magnon gap. This is in excellent agreement with experimental results. In addition, the existence of bound states of two magnons is predicted: below the continuum a singlet and a triplet, above the continuum an ``anti-bound'' quintuplet. The results are based on field theoretic arguments, RPA calculations, and consideration of the limit of strong alternation.

Coupled Luttinger Liquids

Many one--dimensional quantum systems, in particular interacting electron and spin systems, can be described a Luttinger liquids. Here, some basic ideas of this picture of one--dimensional systems are briefly reviewed. I then discuss the effect of interchain coupling for a finite number of parallel chains. In the case of spin chains coupled by exchange interactions, the low--energy properties are radically different according to whether the number of coupled chains is even or odd: even number of chains have a gap in the spin excitations, whereas odd numbers of chains are gapless. The effect of interchain tunneling is analyzed for two and three coupled chains of itinerant fermions: for repulsive interactions, the two--chain system is ``universally'' found to be a d--wave superconductor, with a gap in the spin excitation spectrum. On the other hand, for three chains the ground state depends both on the boundary conditions in the transverse direction and on the strength of the interactions. Weak repulsive interactions in all cases lead to dominant superconducting pairing of d--type. An example of a three--leg spin ladder with a spin gap is proposed. A general scheme to keep track of fermion anticommutation in the bosonization technique is developed.

Dynamics of coupled quantum spin chains

Static and dynamical properties of weakly coupled antiferromagnetic spin chains are treated using a mean--field approximation for the interchain coupling and exact results for the resulting effective one--dimensional problem. Results for staggered magnetization, Néel temperature and spin wave excitations are in agreement with experiments on $\rm KCuF_3$. The existence of a narrow longitudinal mode is predicted. The results are in agreement with general scaling arguments, contrary to spin wave theory.

The Superconducting Instabilities of the non half-filled Hubbard Model in Two Dimensions

The problem of weakly correlated electrons on a square lattice is formulated in terms of one-loop renormalization group. Starting from the action for the entire Brillouin zone (and not with a low-energy effective action) we reduce successively the cutoff $Λ$ about the Fermi surface and follow the renormalization of the coupling $U$ as a function of three energy-momenta. We calculate the intrinsic scale $T_{co}$ where the renormalization group flow crosses over from the regime ($Λ> T_{co}$) where the electron-electron (e-e) and electron-hole (e-h) terms are equally important to the regime ($Λ< T_{co}$) where only the e-e term plays a role. In the low energy regime only the pairing interaction $V$ is marginally relevant, containing contributions from all renormalization group steps of the regime $Λ> T_{co}$. After diagonalization of $V_{Λ=T_{co}}$, we identify its most attractive eigenvalue $λ_{\min}$. At low filling, $λ_{\min}$ corresponds to the $B_2$ representation ($d_{xy}$ symmetry), while near half filling the strongest attraction occurs in the $B_1$ representation ($d_{x^2-y^2}$ symmetry). In the direction of the van Hove singularities, the order parameter shows peaks with increasing strength as one approaches half filling. Using the form of pairing and the structure of the renormalization group equations in the low energy regime, we give our interpretation of ARPES experiments trying to determine the symmetry of the order parameter in the Bi2212 high-$T_{c}$ compound.

Transport in an inhomogeneous interacting one--dimensional system

Transport through a one--dimensional wire of interacting electrons connected to semi--infinite leads is investigated using a bosonization approach. An incident electron is transmitted as a sequence of partial charges. The dc conductance is found to be entirely determined by the properties of the leads. The dynamic nonlocal conductivity is rigorously expressed in terms of the transmission. For abrupt variations of the interaction parameters at the junctions the central wire acts as a Fabry--Perot resonator. When one of the connected wires has a tendency towards superconducting order, partial Andreev reflection of an incident electron occurs.

Phases of two coupled Luttinger liquids

A model of two interacting one--dimensional fermion systems (``Luttinger liquids'') coupled by single--particle hopping is investigated. Bosonization allows a number of exact statements to be made. In particular, for forward scattering only, the model contains two massless boson sectors and an Ising type critical sector. For general interactions, there is a spin excitation gap and either s-- or d--type pairing fluctuations dominate. It is shown that the same behavior is also found for strong interactions. A possible scenario for the crossover to a Fermi liquid in a many chain system is discussed.
