Anisotropic magnetic properties and giant rotating magnetocaloric effect in double-perovskite Tb2CoMnO6

We investigated the anisotropy of the magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of singlecrystalline double perovskite Tb2CoMnO6, which crystallizes in a monoclinic P21/n structure. Due to dissimilar magnetic anisotropy, the ferromagnetic order of the Co2+ and Mn4+ moments emerges along the c-axis at TC = 100 K, and the larger Tb3+ moments align perpendicular to the c-axis, below TTb = 15 K. The intricate temperature development of the metamagnetism along the c-axis results in a large negative change in the magnetic entropy at low temperature. On the other hand, the larger but almost reversible magnetization, perpendicular to the c-axis, results in a small and positive entropy change. This highly anisotropic magnetocaloric effect (MCE) leads to a giant rotational MCE, estimated to be 20.8 J/kg K. Our findings, based on the magnetic anisotropy in Tb2CoMnO6, enrich fundamental and applied research on magnetic materials, considering the distinct magnetic characteristics of double perovskites.

Spatiotemporal Binary Interaction and Designer quasi particle condensates

We introduce a new integrable model to investigate the dynamics of two component quasi particle condensates with spatio temporal interaction strengths. We derive the associated Lax-pair of the coupled GP equation and construct matter wave solitons. We show that the spatio temporal binary interaction strengths not only facilitate the stabilization of the condensates, but also enables one to fabricate condensates with desirable densities, geometries and properties leading to the so called "designer quasi particle condensates".

Three-dimensional Curve Motions Induced by the Modified Korteweg-de Vries Equation

We have constructed one-phase quasi-periodic solutions of the curve equation induced by the mKdV equation. The solution is expressed in terms of the elliptic functions of Weierstrass. This solution can describe curve dynamics such as a vortex filament with axial velocity embedded in an incompressible inviscid fluid. There exist two types of curves (type-A, type-B) according to the form of the main spectra of the finite-band integrated solution. Our solution includes various filament shapes such as the Kelvin-type wave, the rigid vortex, plane curves, closed curves, and the Hasimoto one-solitonic filament.

Sine-Gordon Soliton on a Cnoidal Wave Background

The method of Darboux transformation, which is applied on cnoidal wave solutions of the sine-Gordon equation, gives solitons moving on a cnoidal wave background. Interesting characteristics of the solution, i.e., the velocity of solitons and the shift of crests of cnoidal waves along a soliton, are calculated. Solutions are classified into three types (Type-1A, Type-1B, Type-2) according to their apparent distinct properties.

PES and XAS Study on Electronic Structures of Multiferroic RMnO$_3$ (R=Y, Er)

Electronic structures of multiferroic RMnO$_3$ (R=Y, Er) have been investigated by employing photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). We have found that Mn ions in RMnO$_3$ are in the trivalent high-spin state with the total spin of S=2. The occupied Mn ($d_{xz} - d_{yz}$) states lie deep below $\rm E_F$, while the occupied Mn ($d_{xy} - d_{x^2 -y^2}$) states overlap very much with the O $2p$ states. It is observed that the PES spectral intensity of Mn 3d states is negligible above the occupied O $2p$ bands, suggesting that YMnO$_3$ is likely to be a charge-transfer insulator. The Mn $d_{3z^2 -r^2}$ state is mostly unoccupied in the ferroelectric phase of YMnO$_3$.

Soliton on a Cnoidal Wave Background in the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation

An application of the Darboux transformation on a cnoidal wave background in the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation gives a new solution which describes a soliton moving on a cnoidal wave. This is a generalized version of the previously known soliton solutions of dark-bright pair. Here a dark soliton resides on a cnoidal wave instead of on a constant background. It also exhibits a new types of soliton solution in a self-focusing medium, which describes a breakup of a generalized dark-bright pair into another generalized dark-bright pair and an "oscillating" soliton. We calculate the shift of the crest of the cnoidal wave along a soliton and the moving direction of the soliton on a cnoidal wave.

Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O using photoemission and x-ray absorption spectroscopy

Electronic structures of Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_x$O have been investigated using photoemission spectroscopy (PES) and x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The Co 3d states are found to lie near the top of the O $2p$ valence band, with a peak around $\sim 3$ eV binding energy. The Co $2p$ XAS spectrum provides evidence that the Co ions in Zn$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$O are in the divalent Co$^{2+}$ ($d^7$) states under the tetrahedral symmetry. Our finding indicates that the properly substituted Co ions for Zn sites will not produce the diluted ferromagnetic semiconductor property.

Vortex Strings and Nonabelian sine-Gordon Theories

We generalize the Lund-Regge model for vortex string dynamics in 4-dimensional Minkowski space to the arbitrary n-dimensional case. The n-dimensional vortex equation is identified with a nonabelian sine-Gordon equation and its integrability is proven by finding the associated linear equations of the inverse scattering. An explicit expression of vortex coordinates in terms of the variables of the nonabelian sine-Gordon system is derived. In particular, we obtain the n-dimensional vortex soliton solution of the Hasimoto-type from the one soliton solution of the nonabelian sine-Gordon equation.

Vortex String Dynamics in an External Antisymmetric Tensor Field

We study the Lund-Regge equation that governs the motion of strings in a constant background antisymmetric tensor field by using the duality between the Lund-Regge equation and the complex sine-Gordon equation. Similar to the cases of vortex filament configurations in fluid dynamics, we find various exact solitonic string configurations which are the analogue of the Kelvin wave, the Hasimoto soliton and the smoke ring. In particular, using the duality relation, we obtain a completely new type of configuration which corresponds to the breather of the complex sine-Gordon equation.

Complex sine-Gordon Equation in Coherent Optical Pulse Propagation

It is shown that the McCall-Hahn theory of self-induced transparency in coherent optical pulse propagation can be identified with the complex sine-Gordon theory in the sharp line limit. We reformulate the theory in terms of the deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten sigma model and address various new aspects of self-induced transparency.

Conservation Laws in Higher-Order Nonlinear Optical Effects

Conservation laws of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are studied in the presence of higher-order nonlinear optical effects including the third-order dispersion and the self-steepening. In a context of group theory, we derive a general expression for infinitely many conserved currents and charges of the coupled higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation. The first few currents and charges are also presented explicitly. Due to the higher-order effects, conservation laws of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation are violated in general. The differences between the types of the conserved currents for the Hirota and the Sasa-Satsuma equations imply that the higher-order terms determine the inherent types of conserved quantities for each integrable cases of the higher-order nonlinear Schrödinger equation.

Painlevé analysis of the coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equation for polarized optical waves in an isotropic medium

Using the Painlevé analysis, we investigate the integrability properties of a system of two coupled nonlinear Schrödinger equations that describe the propagation of orthogonally polarized optical waves in an isotropic medium. Besides the well-known integrable vector nonlinear Schrödinger equation, we show that there exist a new set of equations passing the Painlevé test where the self and cross phase modulational terms are of different magnitude. We introduce the Hirota bilinearization and the Bäcklund transformation to obtain soliton solutions and prove integrability by making a change of variables. The conditions on the third-order susceptibility tensor $χ^{(3)} $ imposed by these new integrable equations are explained.

Field Theory for Coherent Optical Pulse Propagation

We introduce a new notion of "matrix potential" to nonlinear optical systems. In terms of a matrix potential $g$, we present a gauge field theoretic formulation of the Maxwell-Bloch equation that provides a semiclassical description of the propagation of optical pulses through resonant multi-level media. We show that the Bloch part of the equation can solved identically through $g$ and the remaining Maxwell equation becomes a second order differential equation with reduced set of variables due to the gauge invariance of the system. Our formulation clarifies the (nonabelian) symmetry structure of the Maxwell-Bloch equations for various multi-level media in association with symmetric spaces $G/H$. In particular, we associate nondegenerate two-level system for self-induced transparency with $G/H=SU(2)/U(1)$ and three-level $Ł$- or V-systems with $G/H = SU(3)/U(2)$. We give a detailed analysis for the two-level case in the matrix potential formalism, and address various new properties of the system including soliton numbers, effective potential energy, gauge and discrete symmetries, modified pulse area, conserved topological and nontopological charges. The nontopological charge measures the amount of self-detuning of each pulse. Its conservation law leads to a new type of pulse stability analysis which explains nicely earlier numerical results.

Matched Pulse Propagation in a Three-Level System

The Bäcklund transformation for the three-level Maxwell-Bloch equation is presented in the matrix potential formalism. By applying the Bäcklund transformation to a constant electric field background, we obtain a general solution for matched pulses (a pair of solitary waves) which can emit or absorb a light velocity solitary pulse but otherwise propagate with their shapes invariant. In the special case, this solution describes a steady state pulse without emission or absorption, and becomes the matched pulse solution recently obtained by Hioe and Grobe. A nonlinear superposition rule is derived from the Bäcklund transformation and used for the explicit construction of two solitons as well as nonabelian breathers. Various new features of these solutions are addressed. In particular, we analyze in detail the scattering of "invertons", a specific pair of different wavelength solitons one of which moving with the velocity of light. Unlike the usual case of soliton scattering, the broader inverton changes its sign through the scattering. Surprisingly, the light velocity inverton receives time advance through the scattering thereby moving faster than light, which however does not violate causality.

Grassmann manifold Bosonization of QCD in Two Dimensions

Two dimensional QCD is bosonized to be an integrably deformed Wess-Zumino-Witten model under proper limit. Fermions are identified having indices of the Grassmann manifold. Conditions for integrability are analyzed and their physical meanings are discussed. We also address the nature of the exactly solvable part of the theory and find the infinitely many conserved quantities.

Path Integral Bosonization of Massive GNO Fermions

We show the quantum equivalence between certain symmetric space sine-Gordon models and the massive free fermions. In the massless limit, these fermions reduce to the free fermions introduced by Goddard, Nahm and Olive (GNO) in association with symmetric spaces $K/G$. A path integral formulation is given in terms of the Wess-Zumino-Witten action where the field variable $g$ takes value in the orthogonal, unitary, and symplectic representations of the group $G$ in the basis of the symmetric space. We show that, for example, such a path integral bosonization is possible when the symmetric spaces $K/G$ are $SU(N) \times SU(N)/SU(N); N \le 3, ~ Sp(2)/U(2)$ or $SO(8)/U(4)$. We also address the relation between massive GNO fermions and the nonabelian solitons, and explain the restriction imposed on the fermion mass matrix due to the integrability of the bosonic model.

Nonabelian sine-Gordon theory and its application to nonlinear optics

Using a field theory generalization of the spinning top motion, we construct nonabelian generalizations of the sine-Gordon theory according to each symmetric spaces. A Lagrangian formulation of these generalized sine-Gordon theories is given in terms of a deformed gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten action which also accounts for integrably perturbed coset conformal field theories. As for physical applications, we show that they become precisely the effective field theories of self-induced transparency in nonlinear optics. This provides a dictionary between field theory and nonlinear optics.
