Bond-dependent interactions and ill-ordered state in the honeycomb cobaltate BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

The ground state and Hamiltonian of the honeycomb lattice material BaCo$_{2}$(AsO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ hosting magnetic Co$^{2+}$, have been debated for decades. The recent proposal for anisotropic bond-dependent interactions in such honeycomb cobaltates has raised the prospect of revisiting its Hamiltonian in the context of Kitaev physics. To test this hypothesis, we have combined magnetization, ac-susceptibility and neutron scattering measurements on a BaCo$_{2}$(AsO$_{4}$)$_{2}$ single-crystal, together with advanced modeling. Our experimental results highlight a collinear magnetic ground state with intrinsic disorder associated to an average incommensurate propagation vector. Monte Carlo simulations and linear spin wave calculations were performed to obtain a spin model compatible with this unusual ground state, the dispersion of magnetic excitations and a magnetization plateau under magnetic field. We thus show that bond-dependent anisotropic interactions, including Kitaev-like interactions, are necessary to account for the puzzling properties of this long-explored material, and are hence a general ingredient in the cobaltates.

Field-induced electronic phase separation in the high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4+y}$

We present a combined neutron diffraction and high field muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) study of the magnetically ordered and superconducting phases of the high-temperature superconductor La$_{1.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$CuO$_{4+y}$ ($T_{\rm c} = 37.5(2)$~K) in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO$_2$ planes. We observe a linear field-dependence of the intensity of the neutron diffraction peak that reflects the modulated antiferromagnetic stripe order. The magnetic volume fraction extracted from $\mu$SR data likewise increases linearly with applied magnetic field. The combination of these two observations allows us to unambiguously conclude that stripe-ordered regions grow in an applied field, whereas the stripe-ordered magnetic moment itself is field-independent. This contrasts with earlier suggestions that the field-induced neutron diffraction intensity in La-based cuprates is due to an increase in the ordered moment. We discuss a microscopic picture that is capable of reconciling these conflicting viewpoints.

Correlated electron metal properties of the honeycomb ruthenate Na$_2$RuO$_3$

We report the synthesis and characterisation of polycrystalline Na$_2$RuO$_3$, a layered material in which the Ru$^{4+}$ ($4d^4$ configuration) form a honeycomb lattice. The optimal synthesis condition was found to produce a nearly ordered Na$_2$RuO$_3$ ($C2/c$ phase), as assessed from the refinement of the time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction. Magnetic susceptibility measurements reveal a large temperature-independent Pauli paramagnetism ($\chi_0 \sim 1.42(2)\times10^{-3}$ emu/mol Oe) with no evidence of magnetic ordering down to 1.5 K, and with an absence of dynamic magnetic correlations, as evidenced by neutron scattering spectroscopy. The intrinsic susceptibility ($\chi_0$) together with the Sommerfeld coeficient of $\gamma=11.7(2)$ mJ/Ru mol K$^2$ estimated from heat capacity measurements, gives an enhanced Wilson ratio of $R_W\approx8.9(1)$, suggesting that magnetic correlations may be present in this material. While transport measurements on pressed pellets show nonmetallic behaviour, photoemission spectrocopy indicate a small but finite density of states at the Fermi energy, suggesting that the bulk material is metallic. Except for resistivity measurements, which may have been compromised by near surface and interface effects, all other probes indicate that Na$_2$RuO$_3$ is a moderately correlated electron metal. Our results thus stand in contrast to earlier reports that Na$_2$RuO$_3$ is an antiferromagnetic insulator at low temperatures.

Ground state magnetic structure of Mn$_3$Ge

We have used spherical neutron polarimetry to investigate the magnetic structure of the Mn spins in the hexagonal semimetal Mn$_3$Ge, which exhibits a large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect. Our analysis of the polarimetric data finds a strong preference for a spin structure with $E_{1g}$ symmetry relative to the $D_{6h}$ point group. We show that weak ferromagnetism is an inevitable consequence of the symmetry of the observed magnetic structure, and that sixth order anisotropy is needed to select a unique ground state.

Evidence for $J_{\rm eff} = 0$ ground state and defect-induced spin glass behaviour in the pyrochlore osmate Y$_{2}$Os$_{2}$O$_{7}$

We present AC and DC magnetometry, heat capacity, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) studies of the pyrochlore osmate Y$_2$Os$_2$O$_7$. We observe a non-zero effective moment governed by $\sqrt{f}μ_{\rm{eff}} = 0.417(1)\,μ_{\rm{B}}$ where $f$ is the fraction of Os sites which exhibit a spin, and spin freezing at temperature $T_{\rm f} \simeq 5\,$K, consistent with previous results. The field dependence of magnetisation data shows that the paramagnetic moment is most likely due to large moments $μ_{\rm eff} \simeq 3\,μ_{\rm B}$ on only a small fraction $f \simeq 0.02$ of Os sites. Comparison of single-ion energy level calculations with the RIXS data yields a non-magnetic $J_{\rm eff} = 0$ ground state on the Os$^{4+}$ sites. The spin-orbit interaction, Hund's coupling and trigonal distortion of OsO$_{6}$ octahedra are all important in modelling the experimentally observed spectra. We are able to rule out impurity effects, leaving disorder-related effects such as oxygen non-stoichiometry or site interchange between Os and Y ions as the most plausible explanation for the magnetic response in this material.

Spin dynamics and exchange interactions in CuO measured by neutron scattering

The magnetic properties of CuO encompass several contemporary themes in condensed matter physics, including quantum magnetism, magnetic frustration, magnetically-induced ferroelectricity and orbital currents. Here we report polarized and unpolarized neutron inelastic scattering measurements which provide a comprehensive map of the cooperative spin dynamics in the low temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase of CuO throughout much of the Brillouin zone. At high energies ($E \gtrsim 100$\,meV) the spectrum displays continuum features consistent with the des Cloizeax--Pearson dispersion for an ideal $S=\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg AFM chain. At lower energies the spectrum becomes more three-dimensional, and we find that a linear spin-wave model for a Heisenberg AFM provides a very good description of the data, allowing for an accurate determination of the relevant exchange constants in an effective spin Hamiltonian for CuO. In the high temperature helicoidal phase, there are features in the measured low-energy spectrum that we could not reproduce with a spin-only model. We discuss how these might be associated with the magnetically-induced multiferroic behavior observed in this phase.

Distinct nature of static and dynamic magnetic stripes in cuprate superconductors

We present detailed neutron scattering studies of the static and dynamic stripes in an optimally doped high-temperature superconductor, La$_2$CuO$_{4+y}$. We find that the dynamic stripes do not disperse towards the static stripes in the limit of vanishing energy transfer. We conclude that the dynamic stripes observed in neutron scattering experiments are not the Goldstone modes associated with the broken symmetry of the simultaneously observed static stripes, but rather that the signals originate from different domains in the sample. These domains may be related by structural twinning, or may be entirely different phases, where the static stripes in one phase are pinned versions of the dynamic stripes in the other. Our results explain earlier observations of unusual dispersions in underdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.07$) and La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_{4}$ ($x=0.095$). Our findings are relevant for all compounds exhibiting magnetic stripes, and may thus be a vital part in unveiling the nature of high temperature superconductivity.

Absence of magnetic ordering and field induced phase diagram in the Gadolinium Aluminium garnet

The robustness of spin liquids with respect to small perturbations, and the way magnetic frustration can be lifted by slight changes in the balance between competing magnetic interactions remains a rich and open issue. We address this question through the study of the Gadolinium Aluminium garnet Gd$_3$Al$_5$O$_{12}$, a related compound to the extensively studied Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$. We report on its magnetic properties at very low temperature. We show that despite a freezing at about 300 mK, no magnetic transition is observed, suggesting the presence of a spin liquid state down to the lowest temperatures similarly to Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$, in spite of a larger ratio between exchange and dipolar interactions. Finally, the phase diagram as a function of field and temperature is strongly reminiscent from the one reported in Gd$_3$Ga$_5$O$_{12}$. This study reveals the robust nature of the spin liquid phase for Gd ions on the garnet lattice in stark contrast to Gd ions on the pyrochlore lattice for which a slight perturbation drives the compound into a range of magnetically ordered states.

Magnetic fluctuations in pair density wave superconductors

Pair density wave superconductivity constitutes a novel electronic condensate proposed to be realized in certain unconventional superconductors. Establishing its potential existence is important for our fundamental understanding of superconductivity in correlated materials. Here we compute the dynamical magnetic susceptibility in the presence of a pair density wave ordered state, and study its fingerprints on the spin-wave spectrum including the neutron resonance. In contrast to the standard case of d-wave superconductivity, we show that the pair density wave phase exhibits neither a spin-gap nor a magnetic resonance peak, in agreement with a recent neutron scattering experiment on underdoped La$_{1.905}$Ba$_{0.095}$CuO$_4$ [Z. Xu et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 177002 (2014)].

Neutron scattering study of spin ordering and stripe pinning in superconducting La$_{1.93}$Sr$_{0.07}$CuO$_4$

The relationships among charge order, spin fluctuations, and superconductivity in underdoped cuprates remain controversial. We use neutron scattering techniques to study these phenomena in La$_{1.93}$Sr$_{0.07}$CuO$_4$, a superconductor with a transition temperature of $T_c = 20$~K. At $T\ll T_c$, we find incommensurate spin fluctuations with a quasielastic energy spectrum and no sign of a gap within the energy range from 0.2 to 15 meV. A weak elastic magnetic component grows below $\sim10$~K, consistent with results from local probes. Regarding the atomic lattice, we have discovered unexpectedly strong fluctuations of the CuO$_6$ octahedra about Cu-O bonds, which are associated with inequivalent O sites within the CuO$_2$ planes. Furthermore, we observed a weak elastic $(3\bar{3}0)$ superlattice peak that implies a reduced lattice symmetry. The presence of inequivalent O sites rationalizes various pieces of evidence for charge stripe order in underdoped \lsco. The coexistence of superconductivity with quasi-static spin-stripe order suggests the presence of intertwined orders; however, the rotation of the stripe orientation away from the Cu-O bonds might be connected with evidence for a finite gap at the nodal points of the superconducting gap function.

Updating the phase diagram of the archetypal frustrated magnet Gd3Ga5O12

The applied magnetic field and temperature phase diagram of the archetypal frustrated magnet, Gd3Ga5O12, has been reinvestigated using single crystal magnetometry and polarised neutron diffraction. The updated phase diagram is substantially more complicated than previously reported and can be understood in terms of competing interactions with loops of spins, trimers and decagons, in addition to competition and interplay between antiferromagnetic, incommensurate and ferromagnetic order. Several additional distinct phase boundaries are presented. The phase diagram centers around a multiphase convergence to a single point at 0.9 T and ~ 0.35 K, below which, in temperature, a very narrow magnetically disordered region exists. These data illustrate the richness and diversity that arises from frustrated exchange on the 3 dimensional hyperkagome lattice.

Dynamic rotor mode in antiferromagnetic nanoparticles

We present experimental, numerical, and theoretical evidence for a new mode of antiferromagnetic dynamics in nanoparticles. Elastic neutron scattering experiments on 8 nm particles of hematite display a loss of diffraction intensity with temperature, the intensity vanishing around 150 K. However, the signal from inelastic neutron scattering remains above that temperature, indicating a magnetic system in constant motion. In addition, the precession frequency of the inelastic magnetic signal shows an increase above 100 K. Numerical Langevin simulations of spin dynamics reproduce all measured neutron data and reveal that thermally activated spin canting gives rise to a new type of coherent magnetic precession mode. This "rotor" mode can be seen as a high-temperature version of superparamagnetism and is driven by exchange interactions between the two magnetic sublattices. The frequency of the rotor mode behaves in fair agreement with a simple analytical model, based on a high temperature approximation of the generally accepted Hamiltonian of the system. The extracted model parameters, as the magnetic interaction and the axial anisotropy, are in excellent agreement with results from Mossbauer spectroscopy.

Field-induced inter-planar correlations in the high-temperature superconductor La1.88Sr0.12CuO4

We present neutron scattering studies of the inter-planar correlations in the high-temperature superconductor La1.88Sr0.12CuO4 (T_c=27 K). The correlations are studied both in a magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO2 planes, and in zero field under different cooling conditions. We find that the effect of the magnetic field is to increase the magnetic scattering signal at all values of the out-of-plane wave vector L, indicating an overall increase of the magnetic moments. In addition, weak correlations between the copper oxide planes develop in the presence of a magnetic field. This effect is not taken into account in previous reports on the field effect of magnetic scattering, since usually only L~0 is probed. Interestingly, the results of quench-cooling the sample are similar to those obtained by applying a magnetic field. Finally, a small variation of the incommensurate peak position as a function of L provides evidence that the incommensurate signal is twinned with the dominating and sub-dominant twin displaying peaks at even or odd L, respectively.
