Scaling behavior in a multicritical one-dimensional topological insulator

A class of Aubry-André-Harper models of spin-orbit coupled electrons exhibits a topological phase diagram where two regions belonging to the same phase are split up by a multicritical point. The critical lines which meet at this point each defines a topological quantum phase transition with a second-order nonanalyticity of the ground-state energy, accompanied by a linear closing of the spectral gap with respect to the control parameter; except at the multicritical point which supports fourth-order transitions with parabolic gap-closing. Here both types of criticality are characterized through a scaling analysis of the curvature function defined from the topological invariant of the model. We extract the critical exponents of the diverging curvature function at the non-high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone where the gap closes, and also apply a renormalization group approach to the flattening curvature function at high symmetry points. We also derive a basis-independent correlation function between Wannier states to characterize the transition. Intriguingly, we find that the critical exponents and scaling law defined with respect to the spectral gap remain the same regardless of the order of the transition.

Half-metal phases in a quantum wire with modulated spin-orbit interaction

We propose a spin valve device based on the interplay of a modulated spin-orbit interaction and a uniform external magnetic field acting on a quantum wire. Half-metal phases, where electrons with only a selected spin polarization exhibit ballistic conductance, can be tuned by varying the magnetic field. These half-metal phases are proven to be robust against electron-electron repulsive interactions. Our results arise from a combination of explicit band diagonalization, bosonization techniques and extensive DMRG computations.

Spin-orbit and impurity scattering in an integrable electron model: Exact results for dynamic correlations

We introduce an integrable model of spin-polarized interacting electrons subject to a spin-conserving spin-orbit interaction. Using Bethe Ansatz and conformal field theory we calculate the exact large-time single-electron and density correlations and find that while the spin-orbit interaction enhances the single-electron Green's function, the density correlations get suppressed. Adding a localized impurity and coupling it to the electrons so that integrability is preserved, the dynamic correlations are found to change significantly after a quantum quench with the impurity interaction switched on suddenly. When the electrons are confined to a periodic structure, the correlations are indifferent to the location of the impurity and only carry an imprint of its intrinsic properties. We conjecture that this unusual feature originates from the integrability of the model.

Deformed Richardson-Gaudin model

The Richardson-Gaudin model describes strong pairing correlations of fermions confined to a finite chain. The integrability of the Hamiltonian allows for its eigenstates to be constructed algebraically. In this work we show that quantum group theory provides a possibility to deform the Hamiltonian while preserving integrability. More precisely, we use the so-called Jordanian r-matrix to deform the Hamiltonian of the Richardson-Gaudin model. In order to preserve its integrability, we need to insert a special nilpotent term into the auxiliary L-operator which generates integrals of motion of the system. Moreover, the quantum inverse scattering method enables us to construct the exact eigenstates of the deformed Hamiltonian. These states have a highly complex entanglement structure which requires further investigation.

Two-channel Anderson Impurity Model: Single-electron Green's function, self-energies, and resistivity

We compute exactly the low-energy single-electron Green's function, the impurity and electron self-energies, and the resistivity for the two-channel Anderson impurity model. These results are obtained by exploiting the boundary conformal field theory identified from the Bethe Ansatz solution of the model. Using that solution we can make contact with the parameters of the original Hamiltonian and provide the detailed crossover between the two integer valence limits. Our results generalize those obtained previously in the context of the two-channel Kondo model.

Conformal Field Theory Approach to the Two-channel Anderson Model

The two-channel Anderson impurity model serves as a prototype for describing heavy-fermion materials with a possible mixed-valent regime with both quadrupolar and magnetic character. We report on the low-energy physics of the model, using a conformal field theory approach with exact Bethe Ansatz results as input.

Critical Theory of the Two-Channel Anderson Impurity Model

We construct the boundary conformal field theory that describes the low-temperature behavior of the two-channel Anderson impurity model. The presence of an exactly marginal operator is shown to generate a line of stable fixed points parameterized by the charge valence of the impurity. We calculate the exact zero-temperature entropy and impurity thermodynamics along the fixed line. We also derive the critical exponents of the characteristic Fermi edge singularities caused by time-dependent hybridization between conduction electrons and impurity. Our results suggest that in the mixed-valent regime the electrons participate in two competing processes, leading to frustrated screening of spin and channel degrees of freedom. By combining the boundary conformal field theory with the Bethe Ansatz solution we obtain a complete description of the low-energy dynamics of the model.

Pairing and Density Correlations of Stripe Electrons in a Two-Dimensional Antiferromagnet

We study a one-dimensional electron liquid embedded in a 2D antiferromagnetic insulator, and coupled to it via a weak antiferromagnetic spin exchange interaction. We argue that this model may qualitatively capture the physics of a single charge stripe in the cuprates on length- and time scales shorter than those set by its fluctuation dynamics. Using a local mean-field approach we identify the low-energy effective theory that describes the electronic spin sector of the stripe as that of a sine-Gordon model. We determine its phases via a perturbative renormalization group analysis. For realistic values of the model parameters we obtain a phase characterized by enhanced spin density and composite charge density wave correlations, coexisting with subleading triplet and composite singlet pairing correlations. This result is shown to be independent of the spatial orientation of the stripe on the square lattice. Slow transverse fluctuations of the stripes tend to suppress the density correlations, thus promoting the pairing instabilities. The largest amplitudes for the composite instabilities appear when the stripe forms an antiphase domain wall in the antiferromagnet. For twisted spin alignments the amplitudes decrease and leave room for a new type of composite pairing correlation, breaking parity but preserving time reversal symmetry.

Kondo Resonance in a Mesoscopic Ring Coupled to a Quantum Dot: Exact Results for the Aharonov-Bohm/Casher Effects

We study the persistent currents induced by both the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher effects in a one-dimensional mesoscopic ring coupled to a side-branch quantum dot at Kondo resonance. For privileged values of the Aharonov-Bohm-Casher fluxes, the problem can be mapped onto an integrable model, exactly solvable by a Bethe ansatz. In the case of a pure magnetic Aharonov-Bohm flux, we find that the presence of the quantum dot has no effect on the persistent current. In contrast, the Kondo resonance interferes with the spin-dependent Aharonov-Casher effect to induce a current which, in the strong-coupling limit, is independent of the number of electrons in the ring.

Superconductivity and Antiferromagnetism: Hybridization Impurities in a Two-Band Spin-Gapped Electron System

We present the exact solution of a one-dimensional model of a spin-gapped correlated electron system with hybridization impurities exhibiting both magnetic and mixed-valence properties. The host supports superconducting fluctuations, with a spin gap. The localized electrons create a band of antiferromagnetic spin excitations inside the gap for concentrations x of the impurities below some critical value x_c. When x = x_c the spin gap closes and a ferrimagnetic phase appears. This is the first example of an exactly solvable model with coexisting superconducting and antiferromagnetic fluctuations which in addition supports a quantum phase transition to a (compensated) ferrimagnetic phase. We discuss the possible relevance of our results for experimental systems, in particular the U-based heavy-fermion materials.

Kondo Impurity in a Mesoscopic Ring: Charge Persistent Current

We study the influence of a magnetic impurity or ultrasmall quantum dot on the charge persistent current of a mesoscopic ring. The system consists of electrons in a one-dimensional ring threaded by spin-dependent Aharonov-Bohm/Casher fluxes, coupled via an antiferromagnetic exchange interaction to a localized electron. By passing to a basis of electron states with definite parities, the problem is mapped onto a Kondo model for the even-parity channel plus free electrons in the odd-parity channel. States of opposite parities decouple for values of the flux corresponding to periodic or antiperiodic boundary conditions. For these special cases, the model is solved exactly by a Bethe ansatz, allowing for an exact calculation of the charge persistent current. In particular we show that the charge stiffness in the special case of spin-independent fluxes is insensitive to the presence of the magnetic impurity/quantum dot.

Hidden Kondo Effect in a Correlated Electron Chain

We develop a general Bethe Ansatz formalism for diagonalizing an integrable model of a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin coupled ferro- or antiferromagnetically to a chain of interacting electrons. The method is applied to an open chain, with the exact solution revealing a ``hidden'' Kondo effect driven by forward electron scattering off the impurity. We argue that the so-called ``operator reflection matrices'' proposed in recent Bethe Ansatz studies of related models emulate only forward electron-impurity scattering which may explain the absence of complete Kondo screening for certain values of the impurity-electron coupling in these models.

Multichannel Kondo Screening in a One-Dimensional Correlated Electron System

We present the exact Bethe Ansatz solution of a multichannel model of one- dimensional correlated electrons coupled antiferromagnetically to a magnetic impurity of arbitrary spin S. The solution reveals that interactions in the bulk make the magnetic impurity drive both spin and charge fluctuations, producing a mixed valence at the impurity site, with an associated effective spin S_eff > S in the presence of a magnetic field. The screening of the impurity spin is controlled by its size independently of the number of channels, in contrast to the multichannel Kondo effect for free electrons.

Multichannel Kondo Effect in an Interacting Electron System: Exact Results for the Low-Temperature Thermodynamics

We study the low-temperature thermodynamics of a spin-S magnetic impurity coupled to m degenerate bands of interacting electrons in one dimension. By exploiting boundary conformal field theory techniques, we derive exact results for the possible impurity thermal and magnetic response. The leading behavior of the impurity magnetic susceptibility is shown to be insensitive to the electron-electron interaction. In contrast, there are two types of scaling behavior of the impurity specific heat consistent with the symmetries of the problem: Either it remains the same as for the ordinary multichannel Kondo problem for noninteracting electrons, or it acquires a new leading term governed by an interaction-dependent critical exponent. We conjecture that the latter behavior is indeed realized when the impurity is exactly screened (m=2S).
