Deterministic nano-assembly of a coupled quantum emitter - photonic crystal cavity system

The interaction of a single quantum emitter with its environment is a central theme in quantum optics. When placed in highly confined optical fields, such as those created in optical cavities or plasmonic structures, the optical properties of the emitter can change drastically. In particular, photonic crystal (PC) cavities show high quality factors combined with an extremely small mode volume. Efficiently coupling a single quantum emitter to a PC cavity is challenging because of the required positioning accuracy. Here, we demonstrate deterministic coupling of single Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) centers to high-quality gallium phosphide PC cavities, by deterministically positioning their 50 nm-sized host nanocrystals into the cavity mode maximum with few-nanometer accuracy. The coupling results in a 25-fold enhancement of NV center emission at the cavity wavelength. With this technique, the NV center photoluminescence spectrum can be reshaped allowing for efficient generation of coherent photons, providing new opportunities for quantum science.

Highly anisotropic superconducting gap in underdoped Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$

The in-plane London penetration depth, $Δλ(T)$, was measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ for five doping levels $x$ ranging from underdoped, $T_c$=11 K ($x$=0.17), to optimally doped, $T_c=$38 K ($x_\textmd{\scriptsize opt}$= 0.35). In the optimally doped samples, $Δλ(T)$ shows exponential saturation in $T \to 0$ limit suggesting a fully gapped superconductivity. The lowest-$T_c$ samples show much stronger non-exponential variation of $Δλ(T)$. Fitting the data to a power-law, $Δλ(T)= AT^n$, reveals a monotonic decrease of the exponent $n$ with $x$ towards the underdoped edge of the superconducting dome. Comparison with $n \approx 1.2$ reported in KFe$_2$As$_2$ ($T_c$=3.5 K, $x=$ 1), suggests a dome-like variation of $n$ with $x$, implying an evolution of the topology of the superconducting gap from full and isotropic in the center of the dome towards strongly anisotropic and, eventually, nodal at the dome edges.

Isotropic three-dimensional gap in the iron-arsenide superconductor LiFeAs from directional heat transport measurements

The thermal conductivity k of the iron-arsenide superconductor LiFeAs (Tc ~ 18K) was measured in single crystals at temperatures down to T~50mK and in magnetic fields up to H=17T, very close to the upper critical field Hc2~18T. For both directions of the heat current, parallel and perpendicular to the tetragonal c-axis, a negligible residual linear term k/T is found as T ->0, revealing that there are no zero-energy quasiparticles in the superconducting state. The increase in k with magnetic field is the same for both current directions and it follows closely the dependence expected for an isotropic superconducting gap. There is no evidence of multi-band character, whereby the gap would be different on different Fermi-surface sheets. These findings show that the superconducting gap in LiFeAs is isotropic in 3D, without nodes or deep minima anywhere on the Fermi surface. Comparison with other iron-pnictide superconductors suggests that a nodeless isotropic gap is a common feature at optimal doping (maximal Tc).

Anisotropic magnetism, resistivity, London penetration depth and magneto-optical imaging of superconducting K0.80Fe1.76Se2 single crystals

Single crystals of K0.80Fe1.76Se2.02 were suscessfully grown from a ternary solution. We show that although crystals form when cooling a near stoichiometric melt, crystals are actually growing out of a ternary solution that remains liquid to at least 850 C. We investigated their chemical composition, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility and resistivity, specific heat, thermoelectric power, London penetration depth and flux penetration via magneto-optical imaging. Whereas the samples appear to be homogeneously superconducting at low temperatures, there appears to be a broadened transtion range close to Tc ~ 30 K that may be associated with small variations in stociometry.

Construction of optimal witness for unknown two-qubit entanglement

Whether entanglement in a state can be detected, distilled, and quantified without full state reconstruction is a fundamental open problem. We demonstrate a new scheme encompassing these three tasks for arbitrary two-qubit entanglement, by constructing the optimal entanglement witness for polarization-entangled mixed-state photon pairs without full state reconstruction. With better efficiency than quantum state tomography, the entanglement is maximally distilled by newly developed tunable polarization filters, and quantified by the expectation value of the witness, which equals the concurrence. This scheme is extendible to multiqubit Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger entanglement.

Anisotropic upper critical field and a possible Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state in a stoichiometric pnictide superconductor LiFeAs

Measurements of the temperature and angular dependencies of the upper critical fields $H_{c2}$ of a stoichiometric single crystal LiFeAs in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 T were performed using a tunnel diode resonator. Full $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ and $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ curves with $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(0)=17 \pm 1$ T, $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(0)=26 \pm 1$ T, and the anisotropy parameter ${γ_H}(T) \equiv H_{c2}^{\bot c}/H_{c2}^{\parallel c}$ decreasing from $\approx 2.5$ at $T_c$ to 1.5 at $T\ll T_c$ were observed. The results for both orientations are in excellent agreement with a theory of $H_{c2}$ for two-band $s^\pm$ pairing in the clean limit. We show that $H^{\parallel c}_{c2}(T)$ is mostly limited by the orbital pairbreaking, whereas the shape of $H^{\bot c}_{c2}(T)$ indicates strong paramagnetic Pauli limiting and the inhomogeneous Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO)state below $T_F \sim 5$ K.

Direct observation of dynamic surface acoustic wave controlled carrier injection into single quantum posts using phase-resolved optical spectroscopy

A versatile stroboscopic technique based on active phase-locking of a surface acoustic wave to picosecond laser pulses is used to monitor dynamic acoustoelectric effects. Time-integrated multi-channel detection is applied to probe the modulation of the emission of a quantum well for different frequencies of the surface acoustic wave. For quantum posts we resolve dynamically controlled generation of neutral and charged excitons and preferential injection of holes into localized states within the nanostructure.

Nodeless two-gap superconductivity in stoichiometric iron pnictide LiFeAs

The variations of in- and inter- plane London penetration depths, $Δλ(T)$, were measured using a tunnel diode resonator in single crystals of the intrinsic pnictide superconductor LiFeAs. This compound appears to be in the clean limit with a residual resistivity of 4 ($T\to0$) to 8 ($T_c$) $μΩ\cdot$cm and $RRR$ of 65 to 35, respectively. The superfluid density, $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$, is well described by the self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. Together with the previous data, our results support the universal evolution of the superconducting gap from nodeless to nodal upon departure from optimal doping. We also conclude that pairbreaking scattering plays an important role in the deviation of the low-temperature behavior of $λ(T)$ from exponential in Fe-based compounds.

Structure and physical properties of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C

We have synthesized polycrystalline samples of the noncentrosymmetric superconductor Mo3Al2C by arc and RF melting, measured its transport, magnetic and thermodynamic properties, and computed its band structure. Experimental results indicate a bulk superconducting transition at Tc ~ 9.2 K, while the density of states at the Fermi surface is found to be dominated by Mo d-orbitals. Using the measured values for the lower critical field Hc1, upper critical field Hc2, and the specific heat C, we estimated the thermodynamic critical field Hc(0), coherence length ξ(0), penetration depth λ(0), and the Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ(0). The specific heat jump at Tc, ΔC/γTc = 2.14, suggests that Mo3Al2C is moderately-to-strongly coupled, consistent with the fast opening of the gap, as evidenced by the rapid release of entropy below Tc from our electronic specific heat measurements. Above 2K the electronic specific heat exhibits the power law behavior, suggesting that synthesis of single crystals and measurements at lower temperature are needed to establish whether the gap is anisotropic. The estimated value of the upper critical field Hc2(0) is close to the calculated Pauli limit, therefore further studies are needed to determine whether the absence of an inversion center results in a significant admixture of the triplet component of the order parameter.

Doping evolution of the absolute value of the London penetration depth and superfluid density in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

The zero temperature value of the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ_{ab}(0)$, has been measured in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ as a function of the Co concentration, $x$, across both the underdoped and overdoped superconducting regions of the phase diagram. For $x\gtrsim0.047$, $λ_{ab}(0)$ has been found to have values between 120 $\pm$ 50~nm and 300 $\pm$ 50~nm. A pronounced increase in $λ_{ab}(0)$, to a value as high as 950 $\pm$ 50~nm, has been observed for $x\lesssim0.047$, corresponding to the region of the phase diagram where the itinerant antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases coexist and compete. Direct determination of the doping-dependent $λ_{ab}(0)$ has allowed us to track the evolution of the temperature-dependent superfluid density, from which we infer the development of a pronounced superconducting gap anisotropy at the edges of the superconducting dome.

Circumstellar molecular composition of the oxygen-rich AGB star IK~Tau: II. In-depth non-LTE chemical abundance analysis

Aims: Little information exists on the circumstellar molecular abundance stratifications of many molecules. The aim is to study the circumstellar chemical abundance pattern of 11 molecules and isotopologs ($^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, SiS, $^{28}$SiO, $^{29}$SiO, $^{30}$SiO, HCN, CN, CS, SO, SO$_2$) in the oxygen-rich evolved star IK~Tau. Methods: We have performed an in-depth analysis of a large number of molecular emission lines excited in the circumstellar envelope around IK~Tau. The analysis is done based on a non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) radiative transfer analysis, which calculates the temperature and velocity structure in a self-consistent way. The chemical abundance pattern is coupled to theoretical outer wind model predictions including photodestruction and cosmic ray ionization. Not only the integrated line intensities, but also the line shapes, are used as diagnostic tool to study the envelope structure. Results: The deduced wind acceleration is much slower than predicted from classical theories. SiO and SiS are depleted in the envelope, possibly due to the adsorption onto dust grains. For HCN and CS a clear difference with respect to inner wind non-equilibrium predictions is found, either indicating uncertainties in the inner wind theoretical modeling or the possibility that HCN and CS (or the radical CN) participate in the dust formation. The low signal-to-noise profiles of SO and CN prohibit an accurate abundance determination; the modeling of high-excitation SO$_2$ lines is cumbersome, possibly related to line misidentifications or problems with the collisional rates. The SiO isotopic ratios ($^{29}$SiO/$^{28}$SiO and $^{30}$SiO/$^{28}$SiO) point toward an enhancement in $^{28}$SiO compared to results of classical stellar evolution codes. Predictions for H$_2$O lines in the spectral range of the Herschel/HIFI mission are performed. [abbreviated]

London penetration depth in Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni) superconductors irradiated with heavy ions

Irradiation with Pb ions was used to study the effect of disorder on the in-plane London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, in single crystals of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$T$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ (T=Co, Ni). An increase of the irradiation dose results in a monotonic decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, without affecting much the transition width. In both Co and Ni doped systems we find a power-law behavior, $Δλ(T) \propto T^n$, with the exponent $n$ systematically decreasing with the increase of disorder. This observation, supported by the theoretical analysis, conclusively points to a nodeless $s^\pm$ state with pairbreaking impurity scattering (interband) with strength being intermediate between Born and unitary limits.

London penetration depth and superfluid density in single crystals of Fe(Te,Se) and Fe(Te,S) superconductors

The in-plane London penetration depth, $λ(T)$, was measured in single crystals of the iron-chalcogenide superconductors Fe$_{1.03}$(Te$_{0.63}$Se$_{0.37}$) and Fe$_{1.06}$(Te$_{0.88}$S$_{0.14}$) by using a radio-frequency tunnel diode resonator. As is also the case for the iron-pnictides, these iron-chalcogenides exhibit a nearly quadratic temperature variation of $λ(T)$ at low temperatures. The absolute value of the penetration depth in the $T \to 0$ limit was determined for Fe$_{1.03}$(Te$_{0.63}$Se$_{0.37})$ by using an Al coating technique, giving $λ(0)\approx560 \pm 20$ nm. The superfluid density $ρ_s(T)=λ^2(0)/λ^2(T)$ was fitted with a self-consistent two-gap $γ-$model. While two different gaps are needed to describe the full-range temperature variation of $ρ_s(T)$, a non-exponential behavior at low temperatures requires additional factors, such as scattering and/or significant gap anisotropy.

London penetration depth and strong pair-breaking in iron-based superconductors

The low temperature variation of the London penetration depth for a number of iron-pnictide and iron-chalcogenide superconductors is nearly quadratic, $Δλ(T) = βT^n$ with $n\approx 2$. The coefficient in this dependence shows a robust scaling, $β\propto 1/T_c^3$ across different families of these materials. We associate the scaling with a strong pair-breaking. The same mechanism have recently been suggested to explain the scalings of the specific heat jump, $ΔC \propto T_c^3$, and of the slopes of the upper critical field, $dH_{c2}/dT\propto T_c$ in these materials. This suggests that thermodynamic and electromagnetic properties of the iron-based superconductors can be described within a strong pair-breaking scenario.

Muon Spin Rotation Measurements of Heterogeneous Field Response in Overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4

Transverse-field muon spin rotation measurements of overdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 reveal a large broadening of the local magnetic field distribution in response to applied field, persisting to high temperatures. The field-response is approximately Curie-Weiss like in temperature and is largest for the highest doping investigated. Such behaviour is contrary to the canonical Fermi-liquid picture commonly associated with the overdoped cuprates and implies extensive heterogeneity in this region of the phase diagram. A possible explanation for the result lies in regions of staggered magnetization about dopant cations, analogous to what is argued to exist in underdoped systems.

Three-dimensional nodal superconducting gap in single crystals Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$

The London penetration depth, $λ$, is directly related to the density, $n_{s}$, of the Cooper pairs ($λ^{2}\propto 1/n_{s}$) and its variation with temperature provides valuable insight into the pairing mechanism. Here we study the evolution with doping of the temperature dependence of the in-plane ($λ_{ab}$) and out-of-plane ($λ_{c}$) penetration depths in single crystals of electron-doped Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. As is the case for other pnictides, $λ(T) \sim T^n$ over the whole doping range and this behavior extends down to at least $T=T_c/100$, setting a very small upper limit on the gap minimum. Furthermore, in the overdoped regime: 1) the exponent $n$ becomes substantially smaller than 2, which is incompatible with the models that explain power-law behavior to be due to scattering; 2) the exponent $n$ becomes anisotropic, with $λ_{c}(T)$ showing a clear $T$-linear behavior over a large temperature interval. These findings suggest that in the overdoped regime the superconducting gap in iron-based pnictide superconductors develops nodal structure, which unlike in the cuprates, cannot be understood within a two-dimensional picture.

12co(J=1-0) on-the-Fly Mapping Survey of the Virgo Cluster Spirals. I. Data and Atlas

We have performed an On-The-Fly (OTF) mapping survey of ${\rm ^{12}{CO(J=1-0)}}$ emission in 28 Virgo cluster spiral galaxies using the Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (FCRAO) 14-m telescope. This survey aims to characterize the CO distribution, kinematics, and luminosity of a large sample of galaxies covering the full extents of stellar disks, rather than sampling only the inner disks or the major axis as was done by many previous single dish and interferometric CO surveys. CO emission is detected in 20 galaxies among the 28 Virgo spirals observed. An atlas consisting of global measures, radial measures, and maps, is presented for each detected galaxy. A note summarizing the CO data is also presented along with relevant information from the literature. The CO properties derived from our OTF observations are presented and compared with the results from the FCRAO Extragalactic CO Survey by Young et al. (1995) which utilized position-switching observations along the major axis and a model fitting method. We find that our OTF derived CO properties agree well with the Young et al. results in many cases, but the Young et al. measurements are larger by a factor of 1.4 - 2.4 for seven (out of 18) cases. We will explore further the possible causes for the discrepancy in the analysis paper currently under preparation.

Non-exponential London penetration depth in RFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (R=La,Nd) single crystals

The superconducting penetration depth, $λ(T)$, has been measured in RFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ (R=La,Nd) single crystals (R-1111). In Nd-1111, we find an upturn in $λ(T)$ upon cooling and attribute it to the paramagnetism of the Nd ions, similar to the case of the electron-doped cuprate Nd-Ce-Cu-O. After the correction for paramagnetism, the London penetration depth variation is found to follow a power-law behavior, $Δλ_L(T)\propto T^{2}$ at low temperatures. The same $T^2$ variation of $λ(T)$ was found in non-magnetic La-1111 crystals. Analysis of the superfluid density and of penetration depth anisotropy over the full temperature range is consistent with two-gap superconductivity. Based on this and on our previous work, we conclude that both the RFeAsO (1111) and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ (122) families of pnictide superconductors exhibit unconventional two-gap superconductivity.
