Recoil-limited feedback cooling of single nanoparticles near the ground state in an optical lattice

We report on direct feedback cooling of single nanoparticles in an optical lattice to near their motional ground state. We find that the laser phase noise triggers severe heating of nanoparticles' motion along the optical lattice. When the laser phase noise is decreased by orders of magnitude, the heating rate is reduced and accordingly the occupation number is lowered to about three. We establish a model directly connecting the heating rate and the measured laser phase noise and elucidates that the occupation number under the lowest laser phase noise in our system is limited only by photon recoil heating. Our results show that the reduction of the laser phase noise near the oscillation frequency of nanoparticles is crucial for bringing them near the ground state and pave the way to sensitive accelerometers and quantum mechanical experiments with ultracold nanoparticles in an optical lattice.

Raman and fluorescence contributions to resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering on LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures

We present a detailed study of the Ti 3$d$ carriers at the interface of LaAlO$_3$/SrTiO$_3$ heterostructures by high-resolution resonant inelastic soft x-ray scattering (RIXS), with special focus on the roles of overlayer thickness and oxygen vacancies. Our measurements show the existence of interfacial Ti 3$d$ electrons already below the critical thickness for conductivity and an increase of the total interface charge up to a LaAlO$_3$ overlayer thickness of 6 unit cells before it levels out. By comparing stoichiometric and oxygen deficient samples we observe strong Ti 3$d$ charge carrier doping by oxygen vacancies. The RIXS data combined with photoelectron spectroscopy and transport measurements indicate the simultaneous presence of localized and itinerant charge carriers. However, it is demonstrated that the relative amount of localized and itinerant Ti $3d$ electrons in the ground state cannot be deduced from the relative intensities of the Raman and fluorescence peaks in excitation energy dependent RIXS measurements, in contrast to previous interpretations. Rather, we attribute the observation of either the Raman or the fluorescence signal to the spatial extension of the intermediate state reached in the RIXS excitation process.

Non-local bias and the problem of large-scale power in the Standard Cold Dark Matter model

We study the effect of non-radial motions, originating from the gravitational interaction of the quadrupole moment of a protogalaxy with the tidal field of the matter of the neighboring protostructures, on the angular correlation function of galaxies. We calculate the angular correlation function using a Standard Cold Dark Matter (hereafter SCDM) model (Omega=1, h=0.5, n=1) and we compare it with the angular correlation function of the APM galaxy survey (Maddox et al. 1990; Maddox et al. 1996). We find that taking account of non-radial motions in the calculation of the angular correlation function gives a better agreement of the theoretical prediction of the SCDM model to the observed estimates of large-scale power in the galaxy distribution.
