Magneto-optical probe of antiferromagnetic sub-phases in a pi- d electronic system

The highly insulating antiferromagnetic phase of the magnetic- organic conductor lambda-(BETS)2FeCl4 has been probed by resonant mm wave methods vs. magnetic field, temperature, and frequency. Our results show evidence for magnetic sub-phases within the temperature-field phase diagram as previously predicted by Brossard et al. [Eur. Phys. J. B 1, 439(1998)].

Novel Features of the Newly Discovered Field-Induced Superconducting Phase of lambda-BETS2FeCl4

We examine magnetic field dependent properties associated with the newly discovered field-induced superconducting state (FISC) in lambda-BETS2FeCl4. These include the metal-to-antiferromagnetic insulator transition, the critical field of the FISC state in tilted magnetic fields, and the low-pressure, magnetic field dependence of the insulating and superconducting phases.

Superconductivity in an organic insulator at very high magnetic fields

We investigate by electrical transport the field-induced superconducting state (FISC) in the organic conductor $λ$-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$. Below 4 K, antiferromagnetic-insulator, metallic, and eventually superconducting (FISC) ground states are observed with increasing in-plane magnetic field. The FISC state survives between 18 and 41 T, and can be interpreted in terms of the Jaccarino-Peter effect, where the external magnetic field {\em compensates} the exchange field of aligned Fe$^{3+}$ ions. We further argue that the Fe$^{3+}$ moments are essential to stabilize the resulting singlet, two-dimensional superconducting state

Determination of polarized parton distribution functions

We study parametrization of polarized parton distribution functions in the α_s leading order (LO) and in the next-to-leading order (NLO). From χ^2 fitting to the experimental data on A_1, optimum polarized distribution functions are determined. The quark spin content ΔΣis very sensitive to the small-x behavior of antiquark distributions which suggests that small-x data are needed for precise determination of ΔΣ. We propose three sets of distributions and also provide FORTRAN library for our distributions.

Shubnikov-de Haas effect and Yamaji oscillations in the antiferromagnetically ordered organic superconductor k-(BETS)2FeBr4: A Fermiology study

Shubnikov-De Haas effect (SdH) effect and angular dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) were observed in the organic superconductor: $κ$-(BETS)$_2$FeBr$_4$. In contrast to its isostructural compound $κ-(BETS)$_2$FeCl$_4$, SdH oscillations, for fields perpendicular to the conducting planes, reveal three Fermi Surface (FS) closed orbits $α$, $β$, and $γ$ whose cross sectional areas are 19.8 %, 99.9 %, and 2.4 % of the first Brillouin zone, respectively. The conduction electron effective masses were found to be: $μ_α = (4.7 \pm 0.2)$ m$_e$, $μ_β = (8.0 \pm 1.0)$ m$_e$, and $μ_γ = (2.0 \pm 0.2)$ m$_e$. The observation of a $γ$ orbit is not expected from band structure calculations, $μ_β$ is among the heaviest masses ever reported for an organic conductor. The observed Yamaji-like AMRO indicates a 2-D closed FS, warped along the $k_z$ direction.

Measuring the Size of the Vela Pulsar's Radio Emission Region

We describe measurements of the size of the Vela pulsar via scintillation, using both fits to the distribution of intensity and measurements of the modulation index. We briefly discuss systematic effects other than source size that can affect the distribution, including gain variations, self-noise, scintillation shot noise, and correlator saturation. Modulation index, a single number, can be biased by all of these, whereas the distribution of intensity is affected in different ways by different effects, providing means of distinguishing among them. Self-noise and gain variations are likely more important at long observing wavelengths, and correlator saturation and scintillation shot noise at short wavelengths. We find a size of about 500 km at decimeter wavelengths. Interestingly, this agrees with measurements of modulation index by Roberts & Ables at the same wavelength. Their results (and more recently that reported by Macquart et al.) suggest that size decreases with increasing wavelength. Although consistent with the observations, this conclusion is perhaps surprising from the standpoint of the traditional radius-to-frequency mapping. However, these measurements are of size rather than height; and of course systematic effects may play a role.
