Development of a pipeline CAMAC controller with PC/104-Plus single board computer

A pipeline CAMAC controller with PC/104-Plus single board computer has been developed. The architecture of the pipeline CAMAC controller is completely different from that of traditional CAMAC controller. The pipeline CAMAC controller adopted truly pipelined command and data paths from/to computer memory to/from CAMAC. The pipeline method enabled the controller maximum speed of CAMAC, approximately up to 3 MB/sec with 24-bit data. The controller also has a DAQ function such as event numbering for co-existence with other equipment such as VME. Not only the functionality and the performance but also the pipeline architecture and the design concept are described.

The Data Acquisition System Based on PMC Bus

High energy physics experiments in KEK/Japan rush into over KHz trigger stage. Thus, we need a successor of the data acquisition(DAQ) system that replaces the CAMAC or FASTBUS systems. To meet these needs, we have developed a DAQ system which includes a crate, base-board modules, daughter cards for front-end A/D or T/D conversion, and back-end communication cards for data transfer and timing control. The size of the crate is for the 9U Euro-cards with the standard VME32 bus and extension connectors for power supply. The base-board comprises of a local bus with the sequencer connected to the front-end daughter cards via event buffering FIFOs, and the standard PMC (PCI mezzanine card) bus to be set a PMC processor unit to reduce data size from the front-end daughter cards. A data transfer module, which is connected to the event building system, and a trigger control unit, which communicates with the central timing controller are installed on the back-end communication card connected to the rear end of the base-board. We describe the design of this DAQ system and evaluate the performance of it.

Development of a PCI Based Data Acquisition Platform for High Intensity Accelerator Experiments

Data logging at an upgraded KEKB accelerator or the J-PARC facility, currently under commission, requires a high density data acquisition platform with integrated data reduction CPUs. To follow market trends, we have developed a DAQ platform based on the PCI bus, a choice which permits a fast DAQ and a long expected lifetime of the system. The platform is a 9U-VME motherboard consisting of four slots for signal digitization modules, readout FIFOs for data buffering, and three PMC slots, on one of which resides a data reduction CPU. We have performed long term and thermal stability tests. The readout speed on the platform has been measured up to 125 MB/s in DMA mode.

A New Gauge Fixing Method for Abelian Projection

We formulate a stochastic gauge fixing method to study the gauge dependence of the Abelian projection. We consider a gauge which interpolates between the maximal Abelian gauge and no gauge fixing. We have found that Abelian dominance for the heavy quark potential holds even in a gauge which is far from maximally Abelian one. The heavy quark potentials from monopole and photon contribution are calculated at several values of the gauge parameter, and the former part shows always the confinement behavior.

Recent topics of infrared effective lattice QCD

Three topics concerning infrared effective lattice QCD are discussed. (1)Perfect lattice action of infrared SU(3) QCD and perfect operators for the static potential are analytically given when we assume two-point monopole interactions alone. The assumption seems to be justified from numerical analyses of pure SU(3) QCD in maximally abelian gauge. (2)Gauge invariance of monopole dominance can be proved theoretically if the gauge invariance of abelian dominance is proved. The gauge invariance of monopole condensation leads us to confinement of abelian neutral but color octet states after abelian projection. (3)A stochastic gauge fixing method is developed to study the gauge dependence of the Abelian projection, which interpolates between the maximally abelian (MA) gauge and no gauge fixing. Abelian dominance for the heavy quark potential holds even in the gauge which is far from Maximally Abelian one.

Evolution of Cosmological Perturbations in the Long Wavelength Limit

The relation between the long wavelength limit of solutions to the cosmological perturbation equations and the perturbations of solutions to the exactly homogeneous background equations is investigated for scalar perturbations on spatially flat cosmological models. It is shown that a homogeneous perturbation coincides with the long wavelength limit of some inhomogeneous perturbation only when the former satisfies an additional condition corresponding to the momentum constraint if the matter consists only of scalar fields. In contrast, no such constraint appears if the fundamental variables describing the matter contain a vector field as in the case of a fluid. Further, as a byproduct of this general analysis, it is shown that there exist two universal exact solutions to the perturbation equations in the long wavelength limit, which are expressed only in terms of the background quantities. They represent adiabatic growing and decaying modes, and correspond to the well-known exact solutions for perfect fluid systems and scalar field systems.

Comments on Closed Bianchi Models

We show several kinematical properties that are intrinsic to the Bianchi models with compact spatial sections. Especially, with spacelike hypersurfaces being closed, (A) no anisotropic expansion is allowed for Bianchi type V and VII(A\not=0), and (B) type IV and VI(A\not=0,1) does not exist. In order to show them, we put into geometric terms what is meant by spatial homogeneity and employ a mathematical result on 3-manifolds. We make clear the relation between the Bianchi type symmetry of space-time and spatial compactness, some part of which seem to be unnoticed in the literature. Especially, it is shown under what conditions class B Bianchi models do not possess compact spatial sections. Finally we briefly describe how this study is useful in investigating global dynamics in (3+1)-dimensional gravity.
