Pygmy dipole strength in 90Zr

The dipole response of the N=50 nucleus 90Zr was studied in photon-scattering experiments at the electron linear accelerator ELBE with bremsstrahlung produced at kinetic electron energies of 7.9, 9.0, and 13.2 MeV. We identified 189 levels up to an excitation energy of 12.9 MeV. Statistical methods were applied to estimate intensities of inelastic transitions and to correct the intensities of the ground-state transitions for their branching ratios. In this way we derived the photoabsorption cross section up to the neutron-separation energy. This cross section matches well the photoabsorption cross section obtained from (gamma,n) data and thus provides information about the extension of the dipole-strength distribution toward energies below the neutron-separation energy. An enhancement of E1 strength has been found in the range of 6 MeV to 11 MeV. Calculations within the framework of the quasiparticle-phonon model ascribe this strength to a vibration of the excessive neutrons against the N = Z neutron-proton core, giving rise to a pygmy dipole resonance.

Production of fragments with and without strangeness within a combined BUU+SMM approach

The formation of hypernuclei in hadron-induced reactions and in heavy-ion collisions within a combination of a covariant transport model and a statistical fragmentation approach is investigated. We study the applicability and limitations of such a hybrid approach by comparing fragmentation data in heavy-ion collisions and proton induced reactions. It turns out that the combined approach describes fairly well multiplicities and momentum spectra of fragments. We thus extend the model by including strangeness degrees of freedom in the fragmentation process, modeled by a phase-space coalescence method. We provide theoretical predictions on spectra and on inclusive cross sections of light hypernuclei for the future experiments on hypernuclear physics at the new GSI facility.

Hypernuclear production by ($γ, K^+$) reaction within a relativistic model

Within a fully covariant model based on an effective Lagrangian picture, we investigate the hypernuclear production in photon-nucleus interaction on $ ^{16}$O target. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial interaction of the incident photon with one of the target protons. Bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation. Using vertex parameters determined in the previous studies, contributions of the $N^*$(1710) baryonic resonance dominate the total production cross sections which are found to peak at photon energies below 1 GeV. The results show that photoproduction is the most appropriate means for studying the unnatural parity hypernuclear states, thus accessing the spin dependence of the hyperon-nucleon interaction.

Fragment formation in proton induced reactions within a BUU transport model

The formation of fragments in proton-induced reactions at low relativistic energies within a combination of a covariant dynamical transport model and a statistical approach is investigated. In particular, we discuss in detail the applicability and limitations of such a hybrid model by comparing data on fragmentation at low relativistic $SIS/GSI$-energies.

Investigation of Pygmy Dipole Resonances in the Tin Region

The evolution of the low-energy electromagnetic dipole response with the neutron excess is investigated along the Sn isotopic chain within an approach incorporating Hartree-Fock-Bogoljubov (HFB) and multi-phonon Quasiparticle-Phonon-Model (QPM) theory. General aspects of the relationship of nuclear skins and dipole sum rules are discussed. Neutron and proton transition densities serve to identify the Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) as a generic mode of excitation. The PDR is distinct from the GDR by its own characteristic pattern given by a mixture of isoscalar and isovector components. Results for the $^{100}$Sn-$^{132}$Sn isotopes and the several N=82 isotones are presented. In the heavy Sn-isotopes the PDR excitations are closely related to the thickness of the neutron skin. Approaching $^{100}$Sn a gradual change from a neutron to a proton skin is found and the character of the PDR is changed correspondingly. A delicate balance between Coulomb and strong interaction effects is found. The fragmentation of the PDR strength in $^{124}$Sn is investigated by multi-phonon calculations. Recent measurements of the dipole response in $^{130,132}$Sn are well reproduced.

Study of the core-excited Fano Resonances in the neutron-rich C-isotopes

Fano Resonances are a new continuum excitation mode in light exotic nuclei. By the QPC model we explain these sharp and asymmetric structures as due to the coupling of a single particle elastic channel to the closed core-excited channels. Theoretical model calculations are compared for 15C, 17C and 19C. The theoretical results for 15C are in qualitative agreement with the experimental spectrum.

Low-energy Dipole Excitations in Nuclei at the N=50,82 and Z=50 Shell Closures as Signatures for a Neutron Skin

Low-energy dipole excitations have been investigated theoretically in N=50, several N=82 isotones and the Z=50 Sn isotopes. For this purpose a method incorporating both HFB and multi-phonon QPM theory is applied. A concentration of one-phonon dipole strength located below the neutron emission threshold has been calculated in these nuclei. The analysis of the corresponding neutron and proton dipole transition densities allows to assign a genuine pattern to the low-energy excitations and making them distinct from the conventional GDR modes. Analyzing also the QRPA wave functions of the states we can identify these excitations as Pygmy Dipole Resonance (PDR) modes, recently studied also in Sn and N=82 nuclei. The results for N=50 are exploratory for an experimental project designed for the bremsstrahlung facility at the ELBE accelerator.

Pygmy dipole resonance in exotic nuclei

The evolution of the PDR strength with the neutron excess is investigated in Sn isotopic and N=82 isotonic chains with regard to its possible connection with the neutron skin thickness. For this purpose a recently proposed method incorporating both HFB and multi-phonon QPM theory is applied. Analysis of the corresponding neutron and proton dipole transition densities is presented.

eta-photoproduction in the resonance energy region

The $η$ production in the nucleon resonance energy region is studied within the unitary coupled-channels effective Lagrangian approach of the Giessen model. We demonstrate that the second peak recently observed in the cross section of $η$ photoproduction on the neutron at $\sqrt{s}$=1.66 GeV can be explained in terms of coupled-channel effects due to $S_{11}(1650)$ and $P_{11}(1710)$ resonance excitations.

Correlations in hypernuclear matter

We investigate short range correlations in nuclear and hypernuclear matter. Self-energies due to short range correlations and their influence on the nucleon and $Λ$-hyperon spectral functions are described in an approach accounting for a realistic treatment of mean-field dynamics and a self-consistently derived quasi-particle interaction. Landau-Migdal theory is used to derived the short range interaction from a phenomenological Skyrme energy density functional, subtracting the long range pionic contributions to the nucleonic spectral functions. We discuss our results for different hyperon-baryon ratios to show the influence of strangeness on the correlations in hypernuclear matter.

Core Excited Fano-Resonances in Exotic Nuclei

Fano-resonances are investigated as a new continuum excitation mode in exotic nuclei. By theoretical model calculations we show that the coupling of a single particle elastic channel to closed core-excited channels leads to sharp resonances in the low-energy continuum. A signature for such bound states embedded in the continuum (BSEC) are characteristic interference effects leading to asymmetric line shapes. Following the quasiparticle-core coupling model we consider the coupling of 1-QP (one-quasiparticle) and 3-QP components and find a number of long-living resonance structures close to the particle threshold. Results for 15C are compared with experimental data, showing that the experimentally observed spectral distribution and the interference pattern are in qualitative agreement with a BSEC interpretation.

Meson Production on the Nucleon in the Giessen K-Matrix Approach

Meson production on the proton is described in a coupled channels K-matrix approach. Both hadronic and photonic scenarios are taken into account on the same theoretical footing. At tree-level the Born amplitudes are obtained from an effective Lagrangian with phenomenologically adjustable coupling constants. The spectral distributions, resonances and their width and the background contributions are obtained within the same approach, thus accounting properly for interference effects. Applications to omega- and associated strangeness production on the proton are discussed.

A relativistic two-nucleon model for $A(p,K^+){_Λ}B$ reaction

We investigate the $A(p,K^+){_Λ}B$ reaction within a covariant two nucleon model. We focus on amplitudes which are described by creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710), and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic resonance states in the initial collision of the projectile nucleon with one of its target counterparts. This collision is modeled by the exchange of $π$ as well as $ρ$ and $ω$ mesons. The bound state nucleon and hyperon wave functions are obtained by solving the Dirac equation with appropriate scalar and vector potentials. Expressions for the reaction amplitudes are derived taking continuum particle wave functions in both distorted wave and plane wave approximations. Detailed numerical results are presented in the plane wave approximation; estimates of the effects of the initial and final state interactions are given in the eikonal approximation. Cross sections of 1 - 2 nb/sr at the peak positions, are obtained for favored transitions in case of heavier targets.

Short Range Correlations and Spectral Functions in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

Dynamical correlations in asymmetric infinite nuclear matter are investigates in a transport theoretical approach. Self-energies due to short range correlations and their influence on the nucleon spectral functions are described in an approach accounting for a realistic treatment of mean-field dynamics and a self-consistently derived quasi-particle interaction. Landau-Migdal theory is used to derived the short range interaction from a phenomenological Skyrme energy density functional. The spectral functions in asymmetric nuclear matter are found to follow in their gross features closely the patterns observed previously in symmetric nuclear matter. An interesting sensitivity of dynamical self-energies and spectral functions on the momentum structure of the underlying interactions is found.

Coupled-channel analysis of the $ω$-meson production in $πN$ and $γN$ reactions for c.m. energies up to 2 GeV

The pion- and photon induced reactions for the final states $γN$, $πN$, $2πN$, $ηN$, and $ωN$ are studied within a coupled-channel effective Lagrangian approach in the energy region from the pion threshold up to 2 GeV. To investigate the role of the nucleon resonances in the different reactions we include all known states with spin-$\foh$,-$\fth$, and -$\ffh$ and masses below 2 GeV. We find a strong contribution from the $D_{15}(1675)$ resonance to the $πN \to ωN$ reaction. While the $F_{15}(1680)$ state only slightly influences the $ω$ meson production in the $πN$ scattering its role is enhanced in the $ω$ photoproduction due to the large electromagnetic coupling of this resonance. We predict the beam asymmetry $Σ_X$ to be a negative in the $γp \to ωp$ reaction near to the threshold. Above the 1.85 GeV the asymmetry is found to change its sign and becomes positive at forward directions. The presented findings can be experimentally tested at GRAAL, CLAS, and CB-ELSA facilities.

A coupled-channel analysis of $KΛ$ production in the nucleon resonance region

A unitary coupled-channel effective Lagrangian model is applied to the combined analysis of the $(π,γ) N \to KΛ$ reactions in the energy region up to 2 GeV. To constrain the resonance couplings to the $KΛ$ final state the recent photoproduction data obtained by the SAPHIR, SPring-8, and CLAS groups are included into the calculations. The main resonance contributions to the process stem from the $S_{11}(1650)$, $P_{13}(1720)$, and $P_{13}(1900)$ states. The second bump at 1.9 GeV seen in the photoproduction cross section data is described as a coherent sum of the resonance and background contributions. The prediction for the beam polarization observable is presented.

Probing Matter Radii of Neutron-Rich Nuclei by Antiproton Scattering

We propose to use antiprotons to investigate the sizes of stable and neutron-rich exotic nuclei by measurements of the $\pbar A$ absorption cross section along isotopic chains in inverse kinematics. The expected effects are studied theoretically in a microscopic model. The $\pbar U$ optical potentials are obtained by folding free space $\pbar N$ scattering amplitudes with HFB ground state densities and solving the scattering equations by direct integration. The mass dependence of absorption cross sections is found to follow closely the nuclear root-mean-square radii. The total absorption cross section is shown to be a superposition of cross sections describing partial absorption on neutrons and protons, respectively. Thus measuring the differential cross sections for absorption on neutrons and protons will give information on their respective distributions. In neutron-rich nuclei the outer neutron layer shields the absorption on the protons giving access to investigations of antiproton-neutron interactions in matter.

Exclusive $K^+$ production in proton-nucleus collisions

The exclusive $K^+$ meson production in a proton-nucleus collision, leading to two body final states, is investigated in a fully covariant two-nucleon model based on the effective Lagrangian picture. The explicit kaon production vertex is described via creation, propagation and decay into relevant channel of $N^*$(1650), $N^*$(1710) and $N^*$(1720) intermediate baryonic states in the initial collision of the projectile nucleon with one of its target counterparts which is modeled by the one-pion exchange process. The calculated cross sections show strong sensitivity to the medium effects on pion propagator and to the final hypernuclear state excited in the reaction.
