Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory in Manifestly Lorentz Invariant Form

We show that in the presence of massive particles such as nucleons, the standard low energy expansion in powers of meson momenta and light quark masses in general only converges in part of the low energy region. The expansion of the scalar form factor $σ(t)$, for instance, breaks down in the vicinity of $t=4M_π^2$. In the language of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory, the proper behaviour in the threshold region only results if the multiple internal line insertions generated by relativistic kinematics are summed up to all orders. We propose a method that yields a coherent representation throughout the low energy region while keeping Lorentz and chiral invariance explicit at all stages. The method is illustrated with a calculation of the nucleon mass and of the scalar form factor to order $p^4$.

Pseudoscalar decay constants at large N_c

In the large N_c limit, the variables required to analyze the low energy structure of QCD in the framework of an effective field theory necessarily include the degrees of freedom of the eta'. We evaluate the decay constants of the pseudoscalar nonet to one loop within this extended framework and show that, as a consequence of the anomalous dimension of the singlet axial current, some of the effective coupling constants depend on the running scale of QCD. The calculation relies on a simultaneous expansion in powers of momenta, quark masses and 1/N_c. Probing the quark condensate by means of pi-pi scattering

The available experimental information is consistent with the Weinberg predictions for the threshold parameters of pi-pi-scattering. The data, however, only test those relations that are insensitive to the quark masses m_u and m_d. Recent theoretical progress leads to remarkably sharp predictions for the behaviour of the S- and P-wave phase shifts in the elastic region -- one of the very few low energy phenomena in QCD, where theory is ahead of experiment and where new precision data would subject the theory to a crucial test (Talk given at the DAFCE workshop, Frascati, November 1996).

On the 1/N expansion in chiral perturbation theory

Talk given at QCD 97, Montpellier, July 1997. In the first part of the talk, I presented a review of the results for the light quark masses obtained on the basis of chiral perturbation theory. As this material is described elsewhere, the following notes only concern the second part, which dealt with the behaviour of the effective theory in the large N_c limit.

Light Quark Effective Theory

Lecture Notes, Summer School on Effective Theories and Fundamental Interactions, Erice, 1996. The application of effective field theory methods to the low energy structure of QCD is discussed. I emphasize the universal structure of the corresponding effective Lagrangian and then discuss the physics of the effective coupling constants. The implications of the effective theory for the masses of the light quarks are analyzed in some detail.

Phonons as Goldstone Bosons

The implications of the hidden, spontaneously broken symmetry for the properties of the sound waves of a solid are analyzed. Although the discussion does not go beyond standard wisdom, it presents some of the known results from a different perspective. In particular, I argue that, as a consequence of the hidden symmetry, the equations of motion for a sound wave necessarily contain nonlinear terms, describing phonon-phonon scattering and emphasize the analogy with the low energy theorems for pion-pion scattering.

Light Quark Masses

Lecture Notes, Summer School on Masses of Fundamental Particles, Cargese, 1996. In the first part, some qualitative aspects the mass pattern are discussed, concerning the breaking of isospin and eightfold way symmetries. The second part deals with the chiral perturbation theory results for the masses of the pseudoscalar octet, which lead to very stringent constraints for the relative size of the light quark masses.

The ratios of the light quark masses

The paper collects the various pieces of information concerning the relative size of m_u, m_d and m_s. A coherent picture results, which constrains the mass ratios to a rather narrow range: m_u/m_d = 0.553 \pm 0.043, m_s/m_d = 18.9 \pm 0.8.

The Masses of the Light Quarks

Talk given at the Conference on Fundamental Interactions of Elementary Particles, ITEP, Moscow, Oct. 1995. The paper reviews the current status of knowledge concerning m_u, m_d and m_s. Qualitative aspects of the resulting picture for the breaking of isospin and eightfold way symmetries are discussed. At a more quantitative level, the review focuses on the chiral perturbation theory results for the masses of the Goldstone bosons. The corresponding bounds and estimates for the ratios m_u/m_d and m_s/m_d are described in some detail.

Implications of eta-etaprime mixing for the decay eta->3 pi

Taken by itself, the interference with the etaprime appears to strongly affect the amplitude of the transition eta->3 pi. I point out that this effect is fictitious and also occurs in the mass spectrum of the pseudoscalars. Chiral symmetry implies that the same combination of effective coupling constants which determines the small deviations from the Gell-Mann-Okubo formula also specifies the symmetry breaking effects in the decay amplitude and thus ensures that these are small.

Dispersive analysis of the decay eta -> 3 pi

We demonstrate that the decay eta -> 3 pi represents a sensitive probe for the breaking of chiral symmetry by the quark masses. The transition amplitude is proportional to the mass ratio (m_d^2-m_u^2)/(m_s^2-m^2). The factor of proportionality is calculated by means of dispersion relations, using chiral perturbation theory to determine the subtraction constants. The theoretical uncertainties in the result are shown to be remarkably small, so that eta-decay may be used to accurately measure this ratio of quark masses.

Bounds on the light quark masses

The corrections to the current algebra mass formulae for the pseudoscalar mesons are analyzed by means of a simultaneous exansion in powers of the light quark masses and powers of 1/N. A set of mass formulae is derived, including an inequality, which leads to bounds for ratios of quark masses.

Masses of the Light Quarks

The magnitude of $m_u,\,m_d$ and $m_s$ is discussed on the basis of Chiral Perturbation Theory. In particular, the claim that $m_u=0$ leads to a coherent picture for the low energy structure of QCD is examined in detail. It is pointed out that this picture leads to violent flavour asymmetries in the matrix elements of the scalar and pseudoscalar operators, which are in conflict with the hypothesis that the light quark masses may be treated as perturbations. Goldstone Bosons

The paper concerns the effective field theory methods used to study the low energy structure of systems with a spontaneously broken symmetry. I first explain how the method works in the context of quantum chromodynamics and then discuss a few general aspects, related to the universality of effective theories. In particular, I compare some of the effective field theories used in condensed matter physics with those relevant for particle physics. Foundations and Scope of Chiral Perturbation Theory

The aim of this introductory lecture is to review the arguments, according to which the symmetry properties of the strong interaction reveal themselves at low energies. I first discuss the symmetries of QCD, then sketch the method used to work out their implications and finally take up a few specific issues, where new experimental results are of particular interest to test the predictions. On the Foundations of Chiral Perturbation Theory

The properties of the effective field theory relevant for the low energy structure generated by the Goldstone bosons of a spontaneously broken symmetry are reexamined. It is shown that anomaly free, Lorentz invariant theories are characterized by a gauge invariant effective Lagrangian, to all orders of the low energy expansion. The paper includes a discussion of anomalies and approximate symmetries, but does not cover nonrelativistic effective theories.

Nonrelativistic effective Lagrangians

Chiral perturbation theory is extended to nonrelativistic systems with spontaneously broken symmetry. In the effective Lagrangian, order parameters associated with the generators of the group manifest themselves as effective coupling constants of a topological term, which is gauge invariant only up to a total derivative. In the case of the ferromagnet, a term connected with the Brouwer degree dominates the derivative expansion. The general analysis includes antiferromagnetic magnons and phonons, while the effective field theory of fluids or gases is beyond the scope of the method.
