A refractive index sensor based on the leaky radiation of a microfiber

In this work we present a refractive index sensor based on the leaky radiation of a microfiber. The 5.3um diameter microfiber is fabricated by drawing a commercial optical fiber. When the microfiber is immersed into a liquid with larger refractive index than the effective index of fiber mode, the light will leak out through the leaky radiation process. The variation of refractive index of liquid can be monitored by measuring radiation angle of light. The refractive index sensitivity can be over 400 degree/RIU in theory. In the experiment, the variation value 0.001 of refractive index of liquid around this microfiber can be detected through this technique. This work provides a simple and sensitive method for refractive index sensing application.

Large and robust electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field using an ultrathin CoFeB/MgO injector

We demonstrate a large electrical spin injection into GaAs at zero magnetic field thanks to an ultrathin perpendicularly magnetized CoFeB contact of a few atomic planes (1.2 nm). The spin-polarization of electrons injected into GaAs was examined by the circular polarization of electroluminescence from a Spin Light Emitting Diode with embedded InGaAs/GaAs quantum wells. The electroluminescence polarization as a function of the magnetic field closely traces the out-of-plane magnetization of the CoFeB/MgO injector. A circular polarization degree of the emitted light as large as 20% at 25 K is achieved at zero magnetic field. Moreover the electroluminescence circular polarization is still about 8% at room temperature.

On More Bent Functions From Dillon Exponents

In this paper, we obtain a new class of $p$-ary binomial bent functions which are determined by Kloosterman sums. The bentness of another three classes of functions is characterized by some exponential sums and some results in \cite{Linian2013} are generalized. Furthermore we obtain, in some special cases, some bent functions are determined by Kloosterman sums.

Multiview Hessian regularized logistic regression for action recognition

With the rapid development of social media sharing, people often need to manage the growing volume of multimedia data such as large scale video classification and annotation, especially to organize those videos containing human activities. Recently, manifold regularized semi-supervised learning (SSL), which explores the intrinsic data probability distribution and then improves the generalization ability with only a small number of labeled data, has emerged as a promising paradigm for semiautomatic video classification. In addition, human action videos often have multi-modal content and different representations. To tackle the above problems, in this paper we propose multiview Hessian regularized logistic regression (mHLR) for human action recognition. Compared with existing work, the advantages of mHLR lie in three folds: (1) mHLR combines multiple Hessian regularization, each of which obtained from a particular representation of instance, to leverage the exploring of local geometry; (2) mHLR naturally handle multi-view instances with multiple representations; (3) mHLR employs a smooth loss function and then can be effectively optimized. We carefully conduct extensive experiments on the unstructured social activity attribute (USAA) dataset and the experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed multiview Hessian regularized logistic regression for human action recognition.

Precision measurement of transverse velocity distribution of a strontium atomic beam

We measure the transverse velocity distribution in a thermal Sr atomic beam precisely by velocity-selective saturated fluorescence spectroscopy. The use of an ultrastable laser system and the narrow intercombination transition line of Sr atoms mean that the resolution of the measured velocity can reach 0.13 m/s, corresponding to 90$μK$ in energy units. The experimental results are in very good agreement with the results of theoretical calculations. Based on the spectroscopic techniques used here, the absolute frequency of the intercombination transition of $^{88}$Sr is measured using an optical-frequency comb generator referenced to the SI second through an H maser, and is given as 434 829 121 318(10) kHz.

Manifold regularized kernel logistic regression for web image annotation

With the rapid advance of Internet technology and smart devices, users often need to manage large amounts of multimedia information using smart devices, such as personal image and video accessing and browsing. These requirements heavily rely on the success of image (video) annotation, and thus large scale image annotation through innovative machine learning methods has attracted intensive attention in recent years. One representative work is support vector machine (SVM). Although it works well in binary classification, SVM has a non-smooth loss function and can not naturally cover multi-class case. In this paper, we propose manifold regularized kernel logistic regression (KLR) for web image annotation. Compared to SVM, KLR has the following advantages: (1) the KLR has a smooth loss function; (2) the KLR produces an explicit estimate of the probability instead of class label; and (3) the KLR can naturally be generalized to the multi-class case. We carefully conduct experiments on MIR FLICKR dataset and demonstrate the effectiveness of manifold regularized kernel logistic regression for image annotation.

Ultrafast Generation of Fundamental and Multiple-order Phonon Excitations in Highly-Enriched (6,5) Single-Wall Carbon Nanotubes

Using a macroscopic ensemble of highly-enriched (6,5) single-wall carbon nanotubes, combined with high signal-to-noise ratio, time-dependent differential transmission spectroscopy, we have generated vibrational modes in an ultrawide spectral range (10-3000 cm^{-1}). A total of fourteen modes were clearly resolved and identified, including fundamental modes of A, E1, and E2 symmetries and their combinational modes involving two and three phonons. Through comparison with CW Raman spectra as well as calculations based on an extended tight-binding model, we were able to identify all the observed peaks and determine the frequencies of the individual and combined modes. We provide a full summary of phonon frequencies for (6,5) nanotubes that can serve as a basic reference with which to refine our understanding of nanotube phonon spectra as well as a testbed for new theoretical models.

Trapping light by mimicking gravitational lensing

One of the most fascinating predictions of the theory of general relativity is the effect of gravitational lensing, the bending of light in close proximity to massive stellar objects. Recently, artificial optical materials have been proposed to study the various aspects of curved spacetimes, including light trapping and Hawking's radiation. However, the development of experimental toy models that simulate gravitational lensing in curved spacetimes remains a challenge, especially for visible light. Here, by utilizing a microstructured optical waveguide around a microsphere, we propose to mimic curved spacetimes caused by gravity, with high precision. We experimentally demonstrate both far-field gravitational lensing effects and the critical phenomenon in close proximity to the photon sphere of astrophysical objects under hydrostatic equilibrium. The proposed microstructured waveguide can be used as an omnidirectional absorber, with potential light harvesting and microcavity applications.

Collectivity evolution in the neutron-rich Pd isotopes towards the N=82 shell closure

The neutron-rich, even-even 122,124,126Pd isotopes has been studied via in-beam gamma-ray spectroscopy at the RIKEN Radioactive Isotope Beam Factory. Excited states at 499(9), 590(11), and 686(17) keV were found in the three isotopes, which we assign to the respective 2+ -> 0+ decays. In addition, a candidate for the 4+ state at 1164(20) keV was observed in 122Pd. The resulting Ex(2+) systematics are essentially similar to those of the Xe (Z=54) isotopic chain and theoretical prediction by IBM-2, suggesting no serious shell quenching in the Pd isotopes in the vicinity of N=82.

Technical Design Report for the: PANDA Straw Tube Tracker

This document describes the technical layout and the expected performance of the Straw Tube Tracker (STT), the main tracking detector of the PANDA target spectrometer. The STT encloses a Micro-Vertex-Detector (MVD) for the inner tracking and is followed in beam direction by a set of GEM-stations. The tasks of the STT are the measurement of the particle momentum from the reconstructed trajectory and the measurement of the specific energy-loss for a particle identification. Dedicated simulations with full analysis studies of certain proton-antiproton reactions, identified as being benchmark tests for the whole PANDA scientific program, have been performed to test the STT layout and performance. The results are presented, and the time lines to construct the STT are described.

Time-Resolved Magnetic Relaxation of a Nanomagnet on Subnanosecond Time Scales

We present a two-current-pulse temporal correlation experiment to study the intrinsic subnanosecond nonequilibrium magnetic dynamics of a nanomagnet during and following a pulse excitation. This method is applied to a model spin-transfer system, a spin valve nanopillar with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. Two-pulses separated by a short delay (< 500 ps) are shown to lead to the same switching probability as a single pulse with a duration that depends on the delay. This demonstrates a remarkable symmetry between magnetic excitation and relaxation and provides a direct measurement of the magnetic relaxation time. The results are consistent with a simple finite temperature Fokker-Planck macrospin model of the dynamics, suggesting more coherent magnetization dynamics in this short time nonequilibrium limit than near equilibrium.

Transformation bending device emulated by graded-index waveguide

We demonstrate that a transformation device can be emulated using a gradient-index waveguide. The effective index of the waveguide is spatially varied by tailoring a gradient thickness dielectric waveguide. Based on this technology, we demonstrate a transformation device guiding visible light around a sharp corner, with low scattering loss and reflection loss. The experimental results are in good agreement with the numerical results.

Linear and Nonlinear Fano Resonance on two-dimensional Magnetic Metamaterials

We demonstrate that both linear and nonlinear Fano resonances can be realized on two dimensional magnetic metamaterials. The Fano resonance comes from the interference between localized magnetic plasmon resonance and propagating surface plasmon polaritons. When studying the linear optical response of the metamaterial structure, this interference phenomenon was observed in the ellipsometric spectrum. By finely tailoring the geometrical parameters of the magnetic metamaterial device, the nonlinear Fano response was tuned to a near-infrared wavelength (1.61-1.8 μm) of femtosecond pump laser, and Fano-type modulation of the third harmonic generation was found and agrees well with our theoretical model.

Coherent magnetic plasmon modes in a contacting gold nano-sphere chain on a gold Slab

A coupled magnetic resonator waveguide, composed of a contacting gold nanosphere chain on a gold slab, is proposed and investigated. A broadband coherent magnetic plasmon mode can be excited in this one dimensional nanostructure. By employing the Lagrangian formalism and the Fourier transform method, the dispersion properties of the wave vector and group velocity of the magnetic plasmon mode are investigated. Small group velocity can be obtained from this system which can be applied as subwavelength slow wave waveguides.

Sizable electromagnetic forces in parallel-plate metallic cavity

Using a boundary element method to calculate the electromagnetic fields and the Maxwell stress tensor method to compute the electromagnetic forces, we investigate electromagnetic wave induced forces acting on a pair of identical metal plates that forms an electromagnetic resonance cavity. Different frequency regimes are considered, from infrared frequencies with micron scale structures down to the microwave regime which involves millimeter scale structures. We found that at both length scales, the electromagnetic wave induced forces can be significantly stronger than the usual photon pressure exerted by a laser beam if the cavity is excited at resonance although the mechanisms that underlie the strong force are different at different length scales. In the infrared frequency regime, the strong force is induced by field penetration into the metal, whereas in the microwave regime, the electromagnetic force is induced by the leakage of electric field at the edges. At both frequency scales, we compare the results we obtained for Au metal plates with fictitious perfect electric conductor plates so as to understand the effect of field penetration. We also showed that a transmission line model can give simple expressions that can capture the essence of the physics. The effect of surface corrugation and surface roughness is also investigated, and we find that corrugation/roughness generally induces attraction between the plates.

Strong plasmon coupling between two gold nanospheres on a gold slab

In this work, the plasmon coupling effect between two gold nanospheres on a gold slab is investigated. At plasmon resonance frequencies, electrons on the surface of the slab are absorbed into spheres and contribute to plasmon oscillation. This effect can help enhance the local electric field and optical coupling force between the two spheres.
