Non-Abelian Black Holes in D=5 Maximal Gauged Supergravity

We investigate static non-abelian black hole solutions of anti-de Sitter Einstein-Yang-Mills-Dilaton gravity, which is obtained as a consistent truncation of five-dimensional maximal gauged supergravity. If the dilaton is (consistently) set to zero, the remaining equations of motion, with a spherically-symmetric ansatz, may be derived from a superpotential. The associated first-order equations admit an explicit solution supported by a non-abelian SU(2) gauge potential, which has a logarithmically growing mass term. In an extremal limit the horizon geometry becomes AdS$_2\times S^3$. If the dilaton is also excited, the equations of motion cannot easily be solved explicitly, but we obtain the asymptotic form of the more general non-abelian black holes in this case. An alternative consistent truncation, in which the Yang-Mills fields are set to zero, also admits a description in terms of a superpotential. This allows us to construct explicit wormhole solutions (neutral spherically-symmetric domain walls). These solutions may be generalised to dimensions other than five.

Solutions to Horava Gravity

Recently Horava proposed a non-relativistic renormalisable theory of gravitation, which reduces to Einstein's general relativity at large distances, and that may provide a candidate for a UV completion of Einstein's theory. In this paper, we derive the full set of equations of motion, and then we obtain spherically symmetric solutions and discuss their properties. We also obtain solutions for the Friedman-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker cosmological metric.

NTT, Spitzer and Chandra spectroscopy of SDSSJ095209.56+214313.3: the most luminous coronal-line supernova ever observed, or a stellar tidal disruption event ?

The galaxy SDSSJ0952+2143 showed remarkable emission-line properties first reported in 2008 (paper I), which are the consequence of a powerful high-energy flare. Here we report follow-up observations of SDSSJ0952+2143, and discuss outburst scenarios in terms of stellar tidal disruption by a SMBH, peculiar variability of an AGN, and a supernova explosion. The optical spectrum of SDSSJ0952+2143 exhibits several peculiarities: an exceptional ratio of [FeVII] transitions over [OIII], a dramatic decrease by a factor of 10 of the highest-ionization lines, a very unusual and variable Balmer line profile including a triple-peaked narrow component with two unresolved horns, and a large Balmer decrement. The MIR emission measured with the Spitzer IRS in the narrow 10-20mu band is extraordinarily luminous (3.5 x 10^{43} erg\s). The IRS spectrum shows a bump around ~11mu and an increase towards longer wavelengths, reminiscent of silicate emission. The strong MIR excess over the NIR implies the dominance of relatively cold dust. The X-ray luminosity of 10^{41} erg\s measured with Chandra is below that typically observed in AGN. Similarities of SDSSJ0952+2143 with some extreme supernovae suggest the explosion of a supernova of Type IIn. However, an extreme accretion event in a low-luminosity AGN or inactive galaxy, especially stellar tidal disruption, remain possibilities, which could potentially produce a very similar emission-line response. If indeed a supernova, SDSSJ0952+2143 is one of the most distant X-ray and MIR detected SNe known so far, the most MIR luminous, and one of the most X-ray luminous. It is also by far the most luminous (>10^{40} erg\s) in high-ionization coronal lines, exceeding previous SNe by at least a factor of 100 [abridged].

Tunneling electroresistance effect in ferroelectric tunnel junctions at the nanoscale

Stable and switchable polarization of ferroelectric materials opens a possibility to electrically control their functional behavior. A particularly promising approach is to employ ferroelectric tunnel junctions where the polarization reversal in a ferroelectric barrier changes the tunneling current across the junction. Here, we demonstrate the reproducible tunneling electroresistance effect using a combination of Piezoresponse Force Microscopy (PFM) and Conducting Atomic Force Microscopy (C-AFM) techniques on nanometer-thick epitaxial BaTiO3 single crystal thin films on SrRuO3 bottom electrodes. Correlation between ferroelectric and electronic transport properties is established by the direct nanoscale visualization and control of polarization and tunneling current in BaTiO3 films. The obtained results show a change in resistance by about two orders of magnitude upon polarization reversal on a lateral scale of 20 nm at room temperature. These results are promising for employing ferroelectric tunnel junctions in non-volatile memory and logic devices, not involving charge as a state variable.

GL(n,R) Wormholes and Waves in Diverse Dimensions

We construct the most general Ricci-flat metrics in (D+n) dimensions that preserve the R^{1,n-1}\times SO(D) isometry. The equations of motion are governed by the system of a GL(n,\R)/SO(1,n-1) scalar coset coupled to D-dimensional gravity. Among the solutions, we find a large class of smooth Lorentzian wormholes that connect two asymptotic flat spacetimes. In addition, we obtain new vacuum tachyonic wave solutions in D\ge 4 dimensions, which fit the general definition of pp-waves in that there exists a covariantly constant null vector. The momenta of the tachyon waves are larger than their ADM masses. The world-volume of the tachyon wave is R^{1,2}, instead of R^{1,1} for the usual vacuum pp-wave. We show that the tachyon wave solutions admit no Killing spinors, except in D=4, in which case it preserves half of the supersymmetry. We also obtain a general class of p-brane wormhole and tachyon wave solutions where the R^{1,n-1} part of the spacetime lies in the the world-volume of the p-branes. These include examples of M-branes and D3-brane. Furthermore, we obtain AdS tachyon waves in D\ge 4 dimensions.

Einstein Metrics on Group Manifolds and Cosets

It is well known that every compact simple group manifold G admits a bi-invariant Einstein metric, invariant under G_L\times G_R. Less well known is that every compact simple group manifold except SO(3) and SU(2) admits at least one more homogeneous Einstein metric, invariant still under G_L but with some, or all, of the right-acting symmetry broken. (SO(3) and SU(2) are exceptional in admitting only the one, bi-invariant, Einstein metric.) In this paper, we look for Einstein metrics on three relatively low dimensional examples, namely G=SU(3), SO(5) and G_2. For G=SU(3), we find just the two already known inequivalent Einstein metrics. For G=SO(5), we find four inequivalent Einstein metrics, thus extending previous results where only two were known. For G=G_2 we find six inequivalent Einstein metrics, which extends the list beyond the previously-known two examples. We also study some cosets G/H for the above groups G. In particular, for SO(5)/U(1) we find, depending on the embedding of the U(1), generically two, with exceptionally one or three, Einstein metrics. We also find a pseudo-Riemannian Einstein metric of signature (2,6) on SU(3), an Einstein metric of signature (5,6) on G_2/SU(2)_{diag}, and an Einstein metric of signature (4,6) on G_2/U(2). Interestingly, there are no Lorentzian Einstein metrics among our examples.

Extremal Black Hole/CFT Correspondence in (Gauged) Supergravities

We extend the investigation of the recently proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence to large classes of rotating black hole solutions in gauged and ungauged supergravities. The correspondence, proposed originally for four-dimensional Kerr black holes, asserts that the quantum states in the near-horizon region of an extremal rotating black hole are holographically dual to a two-dimensional chiral theory whose Virasoro algebra arises as an asymptotic symmetry of the near-horizon geometry. In fact in dimension D there are [(D-1)/2] commuting Virasoro algebras. We consider a general canonical class of near-horizon geometries in arbitrary dimension D, and show that in any such metric, the [(D-1)/2] central charges each imply, via the Cardy formula, a microscopic entropy that agrees with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the associated extremal black hole. In the remainder of the paper we show for most of the known rotating black hole solutions of gauged supergravity, and for the ungauged supergravity solutions with four charges in D=4 and three charges in D=5, that their extremal near-horizon geometries indeed lie within the canonical form. This establishes that in all these examples, the microscopic entropies of the dual CFTs agree with the Bekenstein-Hawking entropies of the extremal rotating black holes.

Extremal Static AdS Black Hole/CFT Correspondence in Gauged Supergravities

A recently proposed holographic duality allows the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of extremal rotating black holes to be calculated microscopically, by applying the Cardy formula to the two-dimensional chiral CFTs associated with certain reparameterisations of azimuthal angular coordinates in the solutions. The central charges are proportional to the angular momenta of the black hole, and so the method degenerates in the case of static (non-rotating) black holes. We show that the method can be extended to encompass such charged static extremal AdS black holes by using consistent Kaluza-Klein sphere reduction ansatze to lift them to exact solutions in the low-energy limits of string theory or M-theory, where the electric charges become reinterpreted as angular momenta associated with internal rotations in the reduction sphere. We illustrate the procedure for the examples of extremal charged static AdS black holes in four, five, six and seven dimensions.

Kerr-AdS/CFT Correspondence in Diverse Dimensions

It was proposed recently that the near-horizon states of an extremal four-dimensional Kerr black hole could be identified with a certain chiral conformal field theory whose Virasoro algebra arises as an asymptotic symmetry algebra of the near-horizon Kerr geometry. Supportive evidence for the proposed duality came from the equality of the microscopic entropy of the CFT, calculated by means of the Cardy formula, and the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the extremal Kerr black hole. In this paper we examine the proposed Kerr/CFT correspondence in a broader context. In particular, we show that the microscopic entropy and the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy agree also for the extremal Kerr-AdS metric in four dimensions, and also for the extremal Kerr-AdS metrics in dimensions 5, 6 and 7. General formulae for all higher dimensions are also presented.

AdS Wormholes

We obtain a large class of smooth Lorentzian p-brane wormholes in supergravities in various dimensions. They connect two asymptotically flat spacetimes. In cases where there is no dilaton involved in the solution, the wormhole can connect an AdS_n\times S^m in one asymptotic region to a flat spacetime in the other. We obtain explicit examples for (n,m)=(4,7), (7,4), (5,5), (3,3), (3,2). These geometries correspond to field theories with UV conformal fixed points, and they undergo decompactification in the IR region. In the case of AdS_3, we compute the central charge of the corresponding conformal field theory.

Evolution of tidal disruption candidates discovered by XMM-Newton

It has been demonstrated that active galactic nuclei are powered by gas accretion onto supermassive black holes located at their centres. The paradigm that the nuclei of inactive galaxies are also occupied by black holes was predicted long ago by theory. In the last decade, this conjecture was confirmed by the discovery of giant-amplitude, non-recurrent X-ray flares from such inactive galaxies and explained in terms of outburst radiation from stars tidally disrupted by a dormant supermassive black hole at the nuclei of those galaxies. Due to the scarcity of detected tidal disruption events, the confirmation and follow-up of each new candidate is needed to strengthen the theory through observational data, as well as to shed new light on the characteristics of this type of events. Two tidal disruption candidates have been detected with XMM-Newton during slew observations. Optical and X-ray follow-up, post-outburst observations were performed on these highly variable objects in order to further study their classification and temporal evolution. We show that the detected low-state X-ray emission for these two candidates has properties such that it must still be related to the flare. The X-ray luminosity of the objects decreases according to theoretical predictions for tidal disruption events. At present, optical spectra of the sources do not present any evident signature of the disruption event. In addition, the tidal disruption rate as derived from the XMM-Newton slew survey has been computed and agrees with previous studies.

Ricci-Flat and Charged Wormholes in Five Dimensions

We construct stationary Ricci-flat inter-universe Lorentzian wormhole solutions in all D\ge 5 dimensions that connect two flat asymptotic spacetimes. Such a solution can be viewed as the gravity dual of a string tachyon state whose linear momentum is larger than its tension. We focus our analysis on the D=5 wormholes which are not traversable for the timelike and null geodesics; however, we demonstrate that there exist accelerated timelike trajectories that traverse from one asymptotic region to the other. We further study the minimally-coupled scalar wave equation and demonstrate that the quantum tunnelling between two worlds must occur. We also obtain charged wormholes in five-dimensional supergravities. With appropriate choice of parameters, these wormholes connect AdS$_3\times S^2$ in one asymptotic region to flat Minkowskian spacetime in the other.

New Charged Black Holes in Five Dimensions

We obtain new stationary charged solutions of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. We first obtain purely dipole charged solutions, by extending a technique that we developed for five-dimensional Ricci-flat metrics in a previous paper, which could be viewed as being analogous to a four-dimensional construction by Demianski and Plebanski. The further introduction of electric charge is achieved by means of a solution-generating technique, which exploits the global SL(2,R) symmetry of five-dimensional minimal supergravity reduced on a timelike direction to four dimensions. We present this procedure in detail, since it provides a particularly simple general way of adding charge to any stationary solution of five-dimensional minimal supergravity. The new charged solutions we obtain limit in special cases to black rings carrying electric and magnetic dipole charge, or to charged Myers-Perry rotating black holes. We analyse the general solutions in detail, showing that they can describe asymptotically locally flat black holes whose horizon is a lens space L(n;m)=S^3/Γ(n;m). At infinity they approach Minkowski_5/Γ(m;n).

A recoiling supermassive black hole in the quasar SDSSJ092712.65+294344.0?

We present SDSSJ092712.65+294344.0 as the best candidate to date for a recoiling supermassive black hole (SMBH). SDSSJ0927+2943 shows an exceptional optical emission-line spectrum with two sets of emission lines: one set of very narrow emission lines, and a second set of broad Balmer and broad high-ionization forbidden lines which are blueshifted by 2650 km\s relative to the set of narrow emission lines. This observation is most naturally explained if the SMBH was ejected from the core of the galaxy, carrying with it the broad-line gas while leaving behind the bulk of the narrow-line gas. We show that the observed properties of SDSSJ0927+2943 are consistent with predictions and expectations from recent numerical relativity simulations which demonstrate that SMBHs can receive kicks up to several thousand km\s due to anisotropic emission of gravitational waves during the coalescence of a binary. Our detection of a strong candidate for a rapidly recoiling SMBH implies that kicks large enough to remove SMBHs completely from their host galaxies do occur, with important implications for models of black hole and galaxy assembly at the epoch of structure formation, and for recoil models.

Discovery of superstrong, fading, iron line emission and double-peaked Balmer lines of the galaxy SDSSJ0952+2143 - the light echo of a huge flare

We report the discovery of superstrong, fading, high-ionization iron line emission in the galaxy SDSSJ095209.56+214313.3 (SDSSJ0952+2143 hereafter), which must have been caused by an X-ray outburst of large amplitude. SDSSJ0952+2143 is unique in its strong multiwavelength variability; such a broadband emission-line and continuum response has not been observed before. The strong iron line emission is accompanied by unusual Balmer line emission with a broad base, narrow core and double-peaked narrow horns, and strong HeII emission. These lines, while strong in the SDSS spectrum taken in 2005, have faded away significantly in new spectra taken in December 2007. Comparison of SDSS, 2MASS, GALEX and follow-up GROND photometry reveals variability in the NUV, optical and NIR band. Taken together, these unusual observations can be explained by a giant outburst in the EUV--X-ray band, detected even in the optical and NIR. The intense and variable iron, Helium and Balmer lines represent the ``light echo'' of the flare, as it traveled through circumnuclear material. The outburst may have been caused by the tidal disruption of a star by a supermassive black hole. Spectroscopic surveys such as SDSS are well suited to detect emission-line light echoes of such rare flare events. Reverberation-mapping of these light echoes can then be used as a new and efficient probe of the physical conditions in the circumnuclear material in non-active or active galaxies.

An Updated Search of Steady TeV $γ-$Ray Point Sources in Northern Hemisphere Using the Tibet Air Shower Array

Using the data taken from Tibet II High Density (HD) Array (1997 February-1999 September) and Tibet-III array (1999 November-2005 November), our previous northern sky survey for TeV $γ-$ray point sources has now been updated by a factor of 2.8 improved statistics. From $0.0^{\circ}$ to $60.0^{\circ}$ in declination (Dec) range, no new TeV $γ-$ray point sources with sufficiently high significance were identified while the well-known Crab Nebula and Mrk421 remain to be the brightest TeV $γ-$ray sources within the field of view of the Tibet air shower array. Based on the currently available data and at the 90% confidence level (C.L.), the flux upper limits for different power law index assumption are re-derived, which are approximately improved by 1.7 times as compared with our previous reported limits.

New Black Holes in Five Dimensions

We construct new stationary Ricci-flat metrics of cohomogeneity 2 in five dimensions, which generalise the Myers-Perry rotating black hole metrics by adding a further non-trivial parameter. We obtain them via a construction that is analogous to the construction by Plebanski and Demianski in four dimensions of the most general type D metrics. Limiting cases of the new metrics contain not only the general Myers-Perry black hole with independent angular momenta, but also the single rotation black ring of Emparan and Reall. In another limit, we obtain new static metrics that describe black holes whose horizons are distorted lens spaces L(n;m)= S^3/Γ(n;m), where m\ge n+2\ge 3. They are asymptotic to Minkowski spacetime factored by Γ(m;n). In the general stationary case, by contrast, the new metrics describe spacetimes with an horizon and with a periodicity condition on the time coordinate; these examples can be thought of as five-dimensional analogues of the four-dimensional Taub-NUT metrics.

Infinite-Dimensional Symmetries of Two-Dimensional Coset Models

It has long been appreciated that the toroidal reduction of any gravity or supergravity to two dimensions gives rise to a scalar coset theory exhibiting an infinite-dimensional global symmetry. This symmetry is an extension of the finite-dimensional symmetry G in three dimensions, after performing a further circle reduction. There has not been universal agreement as to exactly what the extended symmetry algebra is, with different arguments seemingly concluding either that it is $\hat G$, the affine Kac-Moody extension of G, or else a subalgebra thereof. Exceptional in the literature for its explicit and transparent exposition is the extremely lucid discussion by Schwarz, which we take as our starting point for studying the simpler situation of two-dimensional flat-space sigma models, which nonetheless capture all the essential details. We arrive at the conclusion that the full symmetry is described by the Kac-Moody algebra G, although truncations to subalgebras, such as the one obtained by Schwarz, can be considered too. We then consider the explicit example of the SL(2,R)/O(2) coset, and relate Schwarz's approach to an earlier discussion that goes back to the work of Geroch.
