Causality and a-theorem Constraints on Ricci Polynomial and Riemann Cubic Gravities

In this paper, we study Einstein gravity extended with Ricci polynomials and derive the constraints on the coupling constants from the considerations of being ghost free, exhibiting an $a$-theorem and maintaining causality. The salient feature is that Einstein metrics with appropriate effective cosmological constants continue to be solutions with the inclusion of such Ricci polynomials and the causality constraint is automatically satisfied. The ghost free and $a$-theorem conditions can only be both met starting at the quartic order. We also study these constraints on general Riemann cubic gravities.

Holographic Heat Current as Noether Current

We employ the Noether procedure to derive a general formula for the radially conserved heat current in AdS planar black holes with certain transverse and traceless perturbations, for a general class of gravity theories. For Einstein gravity, the general higher-order Lovelock gravities and also a class of Horndeski gravities, we derive the boundary stress tensor and show that the resulting boundary heat current matches precisely the bulk Noether current.

Bounce Universe and Black Holes from Critical Einsteinian Cubic Gravity

We show that there exists a critical point for the coupling constants in Einsteinian cubic gravity where the linearized equations on the maximally-symmetric vacuum vanish identically. We construct an exact isotropic bounce universe in the critical theory in four dimensions. The comoving time runs from minus infinity to plus infinity, yielding a smooth universe bouncing between two de Sitter vacua. In five dimensions we adopt numerical approach to construct a bounce solution, where a singularity occurred before the bounce takes place. We then construct exact anisotropic bounces that connect two isotropic de Sitter spacetimes with flat spatial sections. We further construct exact AdS black holes in the critical theory in four and five dimensions and obtain an exact AdS wormbrane in four dimensions.

EAS age determination from the study of the lateral distribution of charged particles near the shower axis with the ARGO-YBJ experiment

The ARGO-YBJ experiment, a full coverage extensive air shower (EAS) detector located at high altitude (4300 m a.s.l.) in Tibet, China, has smoothly taken data, with very high stability, since November 2007 to the beginning of 2013. The array consisted of a carpet of about 7000 m$^2$ Resistive Plate Chambers (RPCs) operated in streamer mode and equipped with both digital and analog readout, providing the measurement of particle densities up to few particles per cm$^2$. The unique detector features (full coverage, readout granularity, wide dynamic range, etc) and location (very high altitude) allowed a detailed study of the lateral density profile of charged particles at ground very close to the shower axis and its description by a proper lateral distribution function (LDF). In particular, the information collected in the first 10 m from the shower axis have been shown to provide a very effective tool for the determination of the shower development stage ("age") in the energy range 50 TeV - 10 PeV. The sensitivity of the age parameter to the mass composition of primary Cosmic Rays is also discussed.

Gate-Sensing Charge Pockets in the Semiconductor Qubit Environment

We report the use of dispersive gate sensing (DGS) as a means of probing the charge environment of heterostructure-based qubit devices. The DGS technique, which detects small shifts in the quantum capacitance associated with single-electron tunnel events, is shown to be sensitive to pockets of charge in the potential-landscape likely under, and surrounding, the surface gates that define qubits and their readout sensors. Configuring a quantum point contact (QPC) as a localized emitter, we show how these charge pockets are activated by the relaxation of electrons tunneling through a barrier. The presence of charge pockets creates uncontrolled offsets in gate-bias and their thermal activation by on-chip tunnel currents suggests further sources of charge-noise that lead to decoherence in semiconductor qubits.

Horndeski Gravity and the Violation of Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality

We consider Einstein-Horndeski-Maxwell gravity, together with a cosmological constant and multiple Horndeski axions. We construct charged AdS planar black holes in general dimensions where the Horndeski anxions span over the planar directions. We analyse the thermodynamics and obtain the black hole volumes. We show that the reverse isoperimetric inequality can be violated, implying that these black holes can store information more efficiently than the Schwarzschild black hole.

The Beam-Target Helicity Asymmetry for $\vecγ \vec{n} \rightarrow π^- p$ in the {\bf{$N^*$} Resonance Region

We report the first beam-target double-polarization asymmetries in the $γ+ n(p) \rightarrow π^- + p(p)$ reaction spanning the nucleon resonance region from invariant mass $W$= $1500$ to $2300$ MeV. Circularly polarized photons and longitudinally polarized deuterons in $H\!D$ have been used with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Lab. The exclusive final state has been extracted using three very different analyses that show excellent agreement, and these have been used to deduce the {\it{E}} polarization observable for an effective neutron target. These results have been incorporated into new partial wave analyses, and have led to significant revisions for several $γnN^*$ resonance photo-couplings.

DC Conductivities with Momentum Dissipation in Horndeski Theories

In this paper, we consider two four-dimensional Horndeski-type gravity theories with scalar fields that give rise to solutions with momentum dissipation in the dual boundary theories. Firstly, we study Einstein-Maxwell theory with a Horndeski axion term and two additional free axions which are responsible for momentum dissipation. We construct static electrically charged AdS planar black hole solutions in this theory and calculate analytically the holographic DC conductivity of the dual field theory. We then generalize the results to include magnetic charge in the black hole solution. Secondly, we analyze Einstein-Maxwell theory with two Horndeski axions which are used for momentum dissipation. We obtain AdS planar black hole solutions in the theory and we calculate the holographic DC conductivity of the dual field theory. The theory has a critical point $α+ γΛ= 0$, beyond which the kinetic terms of the Horndeski axions become ghost-like. The conductivity as a function of temperature behaves qualitatively like that of a conductor below the critical point, becoming semiconductor-like at the critical point. Beyond the critical point, the ghost-like nature of the Horndeski fields is associated with the onset of unphysical singular or negative conductivities. Some further generalisations of the above theories are considered also.

Black Holes, Dark Wormholes and Solitons in f(T) Gravities

By choosing an appropriate vielbein basis, we obtain a class of spherically-symmetric solutions in $f(T)$ gravities. The solutions are asymptotic to Minkowski spacetimes with leading falloffs the same as those of the Schwarzschild black hole. In general, these solutions have branch-cut singularities in the middle. For appropriately chosen $f(T)$ functions, extremal black holes can also emerge. Furthermore, we obtain wormhole configurations whose spatial section is analogous to an Ellis wormhole, but $-g_{tt}$ runs from 0 to 1 as the proper radial coordinate runs from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$. Thus a signal sent from $-\infty$ to $+\infty$ through the wormhole will be infinitely red-shifted. We call such a spacetime configuration a dark wormhole. By introducing a bare cosmological constant $Λ_0$, we construct smooth solitons that are asymptotic to local AdS with an effective $Λ_{\rm eff}$. In the middle of bulk, the soliton metric behaves like the AdS of bare $Λ_0$ in global coordinates. We also embed AdS planar and Lifshitz black holes in $f(T)$ gravities. Finally we couple the Maxwell field to the $f(T)$ theories and construct electrically-charged solutions.

Lichnerowicz Modes and Black Hole Families in Ricci Quadratic Gravity

A new branch of black hole solutions occurs along with the standard Schwarzschild branch in $n$-dimensional extensions of general relativity including terms quadratic in the Ricci tensor. The standard and new branches cross at a point determined by a static negative-eigenvalue eigenfunction of the Lichnerowicz operator, analogous to the Gross-Perry-Yaffe eigenfunction for the Schwarzschild solution in standard $n=4$ dimensional general relativity. This static eigenfunction has two rôles: both as a perturbation away from Schwarzschild along the new black-hole branch and also as a threshold unstable mode lying at the edge of a domain of Gregory-Laflamme-type instability of the Schwarzschild solution for small-radius black holes. A thermodynamic analogy with the Gubser and Mitra conjecture on the relation between quantum thermodynamic and classical dynamical instabilities leads to a suggestion that there may be a switch of stability properties between the old and new black-hole branches for small black holes with radii below the branch crossing point.

Search for Gamma Ray Bursts with the ARGO-YBJ Detector in Shower Mode

The ARGO-YBJ detector, located at the Yangbajing Cosmic Ray Laboratory (4300 m a. s. l., Tibet, China), was a full coverage air shower array dedicated to gamma ray astronomy and cosmic ray studies. The wide field of view (~ 2 sr) and high duty cycle (> 86%), made ARGO-YBJ suitable to search for short and unexpected gamma ray emissions like gamma ray bursts (GRBs). Between 2007 November 6 and 2013 February 7, 156 satellite-triggered GRBs (24 of them with known redshift) occurred within the ARGO-YBJ field of view. A search for possible emission associated to these GRBs has been made in the two energy ranges 10-100 GeV and 10-1000 GeV. No significant excess has been found in time coincidence with the satellite detections nor in a time window of one hour after the bursts. Taking into account the EBL absorption, upper limits to the energy fluence at 99% of confidence level have been evaluated, with values ranging from ~ 10-5 erg cm-2 to ~10-1 erg cm-2.

Butterfly Velocity Bound and Reverse Isoperimetric Inequality

We study the butterfly effect of the AdS planar black holes in the framework of Einstein's general relativity. We find that the butterfly velocities can be expressed by a universal formula $v_{\rm B}^2 = TS/(2V_{\rm th} P)$. In doing so, we come upon a near-horizon geometrical formula for the thermodynamical volume $V_{\rm th}$. We verify the volume formula by examining a variety of AdS black holes. We also show that the volume formula implies that the conjectured reverse isoperimetric inequality follows straightforwardly from the null-energy condition, for static AdS black holes. The inequality is thus related to an upper bound of the butterfly velocities.

Time Machines and AdS Solitons with Negative Mass

We show that in D=2n+1 dimensions, when mass is negative and all angular momenta are non-vanishing, Kerr and Kerr-AdS metrics describe smooth time machines, with no curvature singularity. Turning off the angular momenta appropriately can lead to static AdS solitons with negative mass. Setting zero the cosmological constant yields a class of Ricci-flat Kähler metrics in D=2n dimensions. We also show that Euclidean-signatured AdS solitons with negative mass can also arise in odd dimensions. We then construct time machines in D=5 minimal gauged supergravity that carry only magnetic dipole charges. Turning off the cosmological constant, the time machine becomes massless and asymptotically flat. It can be described as a constant time bundle over the Eguchi-Hanson instanton.

Godel Universe from String Theory

Gödel universe is a direct product of a line and a three-dimensional spacetime we call G$_α$. In this paper, we show that the Gödel metrics can arise as exact solutions in Einstein-Maxwell-Axion, Einstein-Proca-Axion, or Freedman-Schwarz gauged supergravity theories. The last allows us to embed Gödel universe in string theory. The ten-dimensional spacetime is a direct product of a line and the nine-dimensional one of an $S^3\times S^3$ bundle over G$_α$, and it can be interpreted as some decoupling limit of the rotating D1/D5/D5 intersection. For some appropriate parameter choice, the nine-dimensional metric becomes an AdS$_3\times S^3$ bundle over squashed 3-sphere. We also study the properties of the Gödel black holes that are constructed from the double Wick rotations of the Gödel metrics.

Holographic Complexity and Two Identities of Action Growth

The recently proposed complexity-action conjecture allows one to calculate how fast one can produce a quantum state from a reference state in terms of the on-shell action of the dual AdS black hole at the Wheeler-DeWitt patch. We show that the action growth rate is given by the difference of the generalized enthalpy between the two corresponding horizons. The proof relies on the second identity that the surface-term contribution on a horizon is given by the product of the associated temperature and entropy.

JLab Measurements of the 3He Form Factors at Large Momentum Transfers

The charge and magnetic form factors, FC and FM, of 3He have been extracted in the kinematic range 25 fm-2 < Q2 < 61 fm-2 from elastic electron scattering by detecting 3He recoil nuclei and electrons in coincidence with the High Resolution Spectrometers of the Hall A Facility at Jefferson Lab. The measurements are indicative of a second diffraction minimum for the magnetic form factor, which was predicted in the Q2 range of this experiment, and of a continuing diffractive structure for the charge form factor. The data are in qualitative agreement with theoretical calculations based on realistic interactions and accurate methods to solve the three-body nuclear problem.

Rotating Solutions in Critical Lovelock Gravities

For appropriate choices of the coupling constants, the equations of motion of Lovelock gravities up to order n in the Riemann tensor can be factorized such that the theories admits a single (A)dS vacuum. In this paper we construct two classes of exact rotating metrics in such critical Lovelock gravities of order n in d=2n+1 dimensions. In one class, the n angular momenta in the n orthogonal spatial 2-planes are equal, and hence the metric is of cohomogeneity one. We construct these metrics in a Kerr-Schild form, but they can then be recast in terms of Boyer-Lindquist coordinates. The other class involves metrics with only a single non-vanishing angular momentum. Again we construct them in a Kerr-Schild form, but in this case it does not seem to be possible to recast them in Boyer-Lindquist form. Both classes of solutions have naked curvature singularities, arising because of the over rotation of the configurations.

Dyonic (A)dS Black Holes in Einstein-Born-Infeld Theory in Diverse Dimensions

We study Einstein-Born-Infeld gravity and construct the dyonic (A)dS planar black holes in general even dimensions, that carry both the electric charge and magnetic fluxes along the planar space. In four dimensions, the solution can be constructed with also spherical and hyperbolic topologies. We study the black hole thermodynamics and obtain the first law. We also classify the singularity structure.
