Decay of an isolated monopole into a Dirac monopole configuration

We study numerically the detailed structure and decay dynamics of isolated monopoles in conditions similar to those of their recent experimental discovery. We find that the core of a monopole in the polar phase of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate contains a small half-quantum vortex ring. Well after the creation of the monopole, we observe a dynamical quantum phase transition that destroys the polar phase. Strikingly, the resulting ferromagnetic order parameter exhibits a Dirac monopole in its synthetic magnetic field.

Bounds for the divisibility-based and distinguishability-based non-Markovianity measures

We derive an upper bound for the distinguishability-based non-Markovianity measure of a two-level system and prove that for certain master equations the exact value of the measure achieves this bound. Furthermore, we obtain an easily calculable lower bound for the divisibility-based non-Markovianity measure of an $n$-level system. We illustrate the calculation of these bounds through examples, considering in detail the spin-boson model. We show that the differences between the two measures in the spin-boson model are caused by the drift vector that is also responsible for the non-unitality of the dynamical map.

Effects of the rotating wave and secular approximations on non-Markovianity

We study the effect of the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) and the secular approximation (SA) on the non-Markovian behavior in the spin-boson model at zero-temperature. We find that both the RWA and SA lead to a dramatic reduction in the observed non-Markovianity. In general, non-Markovian dynamics is observed for the whole relaxation time of the system, whereas the RWA and SA lead to such dynamics only on the short time scale of the environmental correlation time. Thus, the RWA and SA are not necessarily justified in the studies of non-Markovianity although they can estimate the state of the system precisely. Furthermore, we derive an accurate analytical expression for the non-Markovianity measure without the RWA or SA. This expression yields important insight into the physics of the problem.

Excitation spectrum of a toroidal spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate

We calculate analytically the Bogoliubov excitation spectrum of a toroidal spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate that is subjected to a homogeneous magnetic field and contains vortices with arbitrary winding numbers in the $m_F=\pm 1$ components of the hyperfine spin. We show that a rotonlike spectrum can be obtained, or an initially stable condensate can be made unstable by adjusting the magnitude of the magnetic field or the trapping frequencies. The structure of the instabilities can be analyzed by measuring the particle densities of the spin components. We confirm the validity of the analytical calculations by numerical simulations.

Stability of nonstationary states of spin-2 Bose-Einstein condensates

The dynamical stability of nonstationary states of homogeneous spin-2 rubidium Bose-Einstein condensates is studied. The states considered are such that the spin vector remains parallel to the magnetic field throughout the time evolution, making it possible to study the stability analytically. These states are shown to be stable in the absence of an external magnetic field, but they become unstable when a finite magnetic field is introduced. It is found that the growth rate and wavelength of the instabilities can be controlled by tuning the strength of the magnetic field and the size of the condensate.

Stability of nonstationary states of spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates

The stability of nonstationary states of homogeneous spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates is studied by performing Bogoliubov analysis in a frame of reference where the state is stationary. In particular, the effect of an external magnetic field is examined. It is found that a nonzero magnetic field introduces instability in a $^{23}$Na condensate. The wavelengths of this instability can be controlled by tuning the strength of the magnetic field. In a $^{87}$Rb condensate this instability is present already at zero magnetic field. Furthermore, an analytical bound for the size of a stable condensate is found, and a condition for the validity of the single-mode approximation is presented. Realization of the system in a toroidal trap is discussed and the full time development is simulated.

Parametrizations of density matrices

This article gives a brief overview of some recent progress in the characterization and parametrization of density matrices of finite dimensional systems. We discuss in some detail the Bloch-vector and Jarlskog parametrizations and mention briefly the coset parametrization. As applications of the Bloch parametrization we discuss the trace invariants for the case of time dependent Hamiltonians and in some detail the dynamics of three-level systems. Furthermore, the Bloch vector of two-qubit systems as well as the use of the polarization operator basis is indicated. As the main application of the Jarlskog parametrization we construct density matrices for composite systems. In addition, some recent related articles are mentioned without further discussion.

N-qubit states as points on the Bloch sphere

We show how the Majorana representation can be used to express the pure states of an N-qubit system as points on the Bloch sphere. We compare this geometrical representation of N-qubit states with an alternative one, proposed recently by the present authors.

Polynomial method to study the entanglement of pure N-qubit states

We present a mapping which associates pure N-qubit states with a polynomial. The roots of the polynomial characterize the state completely. Using the properties of the polynomial we construct a way to determine the separability and the number of unentangled qubits of pure N-qubit states.

Inert states of spin-S systems

We present a simple but efficient geometrical method for determining the inert states of spin-S systems. It can be used if the system is described by a spin vector of a spin-S particle and its energy is invariant in spin rotations and phase changes. Our method is applicable to an arbitrary S and it is based on the representation of a pure spin state of a spin-S particle in terms of 2S points on the surface of a sphere. We use this method to find candidates for some of the ground states of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.

Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a gas of weakly dissociated diatomic molecules

We consider the properties of a gas of bosonic diatomic molecules in the limit when few of the molecules are dissociated. Taking into account the effects of dissociation and scattering among molecules and atoms, we calculate the dispersion relation for a molecule, and the thermal depletion of the condensate. We calculate the dependence of the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature of a uniform gas on the atom-atom scattering length, and conclude that, for a broad Feshbach resonance, the condensation temperature increases as the molecular state becomes less strongly bound, thereby giving rise to a maximum in the transition temperature in the BEC-BCS crossover. We also argue on general grounds that, for a gas in a harmonic trap and for a narrow Feshbach resonance, the condensation temperature will decrease with increasing scattering length.

Explicit expressions for the topological defects of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

In this paper we first derive a general method which enables one to create expressions for vortices and monopoles. By using this method we construct several order-parameters describing the vortices and monopoles of Bose-Einstein condensates with hyperfine spin F=1 and F=2. We concentrate on defects which are topologically stable in the absence of an external magnetic field. In particular we show that in a ferromagnetic condensate there can be a vortex which does not produce any superfluid flow. We also point out that the order-parameter space of the cyclic phase of F=2 condensate consists of two disconnected sets. Finally we examine the effect of an external magnetic field on the vortices of a ferromagnetic F=1 condensate and discuss the experimental preparation of a vortex in this system.

Topological defects in spinor condensates

We investigate the structure of topological defects in the ground states of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates with spin F=1 or F=2. The type and number of defects are determined by calculating the first and second homotopy groups of the order-parameter space. The order-parameter space is identified with a set of degenerate ground state spinors. Because the structure of the ground state depends on whether or not there is an external magnetic field applied to the system, defects are sensitive to the magnetic field. We study both cases and find that the defects in zero and non-zero field are different.
