Conversion of any finite bandwidth optical field into a shape invariant beam

We discuss a method to transform any optical field, with finite frequency bandwidth, into a shape invariant beam with transverse scaling, dependent on the propagation distance. The method consists in modulating the field with a quadratic phase of appropriate curvature radius. As a particular application, we employ the method to extend the existence region of a finite non-diffracting field to an unbounded domain.

Structure invariant wave packets

We show that by adding a quadratic phase to an initial arbitrary wavefunction, its free evolution maintains an invariant structure while it spreads by the action of an squeeze operator. Although such invariance is an approximation, we show that it matches perfectly the exact evolution.

Quantum harmonic oscillator with time dependent mass

We use the Fourier operator to transform a time dependent mass quantum harmonic oscillator into a frequency dependent one. Then we use Lewis-Ermakov invariants to solve the Schrödinger equation by using squeeze operators. Finally we give two examples of time dependencies: quadratically and hyperbolically growing masses.

Normalization of the wavefunction obtained from perturbation theory based on a matrix method

We present the derivation of the normalization constant for the perturbation matrix method recently proposed. The method is tested on the problem of a binary waveguide array for which an exact and an approximate solution are known. In our analysis, we show that to third order the normalized matrix method approximate solution gives results coinciding with the exact known solution.

Measuring quasiprobability distribution functions of the cavity field considering field and atomic decays

We study the possibility of reconstructing the quantum state of light in a cavity subject to dissipation. We pass atoms, also subject to decay, through the cavity and surprisingly show that both decays allow the measurement of $s$-parametrized quasiprobability distributions. In fact, if we consider only atomic decay, we show that the Wigner function may be reconstructed. Because these distributions contain whole information of the initial field state, it is possible to recover information after both atomic and field decays occur.

A fast scheme for the implementation of the quantum Rabi model with trapped ions

We show how to produce a fast quantum Rabi model with trapped ions. Its importance resides not only in the acceleration of the phenomena that may be achieved with these systems, from quantum gates to the generation of nonclassical states of the vibrational motion of the ion, but also in reducing unwanted effects such as the decay of coherences that may appear in such systems.

Generalized revival and splitting of an arbitrary optical field in GRIN media

Assuming a non-paraxial propagation operator, we study the propagation of an electromagnetic field with an arbitrary initial condition in a quadratic GRIN medium. We show that at certain specific periodic distances, the propagated field is given by the fractional Fourier transform of a superposition of the initial field and of a reflected version of it. We also prove that for particular wavelengths, there is a revival and a splitting of the initial field. We apply this results, first to an initial field given by a Bessel function and show that it splits into two generalized Bessel functions, and second, to an Airy function. In both cases our results are compared with the exact numerical ones.

The Pegg-Barnett phase operator and the discrete Fourier transform

In quantum mechanics the position and momentum operators are related to each other via the Fourier transform. In the same way, here we show that the so-called Pegg-Barnett phase operator can be obtained by the application of the discrete Fourier transform to the number operator defined in a finite-dimensional Hilbert space. Furthermore, we show that the structure of the London-Susskind-Glogower phase operator, whose natural logarithm give rise the Pegg-Barnett phase operator, is contained into the Hamiltonian of circular waveguide arrays. Our results may find applications in the development of new finite-dimensional photonic systems with interesting phase-dependent properties.

Coherent delocalization: Views of entanglement in different scenarios

The concept of entanglement was originally introduced to explain correlations existing between two spatially separated systems, that cannot be described using classical ideas. Interestingly, in recent years, it has been shown that similar correlations can be observed when considering different degrees of freedom of a single system, even a classical one. Surprisingly, it has also been suggested that entanglement might be playing a relevant role in certain biological processes, such as the functioning of pigment-proteins that constitute light-harvesting complexes of photosynthetic bacteria. The aim of this work is to show that the presence of entanglement in all of these different scenarios should not be unexpected, once it is realized that the very same mathematical structure can describe all of them. We show this by considering three different, realistic cases in which the only condition for entanglement to exist is that a single excitation is coherently delocalized between the different subsystems that compose the system of interest.

Generation of squeezed Schrödinger cats in a tunable cavity filled with a Kerr medium

In this work we analyze the temporal dynamics of a system comprising an optical cavity filled with a nonlinear Kerr medium, whose frequency is allowed to change during time evolution. By exactly solving the corresponding time-dependent anharmonic-oscillator Hamiltonian, we demonstrate that squeezed coherent-state superpositions can be generated within the optical cavity. Moreover, we show that the squeezing degree of the produced states may be tuned by properly controlling the frequency shift of the cavity, a feature that might lead to interesting studies in the field of quantum state engineering.

Revival and splitting of a Gaussian beam in gradient index media

The short range revival of an arbitrary monochromatic optical field, which propagates in a quadratic GRIN rod, is a well-known effect that is established assuming the first-order approximation of the propagation operator. We discuss the revival and multiple splitting of an off-axis Gaussian beam propagating to relatively long distances in a quadratic GRIN medium. These effects are obtained assuming the second-order approximation of the propagation operator in this medium.

Ultracold two-level atom in a quadratic potential

We use a right unitary decomposition to study an ultracold two-level atom interacting with a quantum field. We show that such a right unitary approach simplifies the numerical evolution for arbitrary position-dependent atom-field couplings. In particular, we provide a closed form, analytic time evolution operator for atom-field couplings with quadratic dependence on the position of the atom.

Operator approach to quantum optomechanics

We study the mirror-field interaction in several frameworks: when it is driven, when it is affected by an environment and when a two-level atom is introduced in the cavity. By using operator techniques we show how these problems may be either solved or how the Hamiltonians involved, via sets of unitary transformations, may be taken to known Hamiltonians for which there exist approximate solutions.

Optical Production of the Husimi Function of Two Gaussian Functions

The intensity distribution of the Husimi function (HF) and the squared modulus of the Wigner function (WF) are detected in the phase space of an astigmatic optical processor. These results, obtained in the laboratory, are compared against numerical results generated by using analytical calculation for the HF and WF. The signal function is the superposition of two Gaussian functions with a separation between them, having the same amplitude but a different variance.

Optical realization of nonlinear quantum dynamics

In a cavity filled with a Kerr medium it is possible to generate the superposition of coherent states, i.e. Schroodinger cat states may be realized in this system. We show that such a medium may be mimicked by the propagation of a conveniently shaped Gaussian beam in a GRIN device. This is attained by introducing a second order correction to the paraxial propagation of the beam. An additional result is that a Gaussian beam propagating in GRIN media, may split into two Gaussian beams.

Phase state and related nonlinear coherents states

We cast the phase state as a $SU(1,1)$ nonlinear coherent state to support the idea that the $SU(1,1)$ representation of the electromagnetic field may be helpful in some instances and to bring forward that it may relate to the phase state problem. We also construct nonlinear coherent states related to the exponential phase operator and provide their corresponding nonlinear annihilation operators. Finally, we discuss the propagation of classical fields through arrays of coupled waveguides that are solved through the use of nonlinear coherent states of $SU(1,1)$ or the exponential phase operator.

Nonlinear coherent state generation in the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model

We show that the two-photon Jaynes-Cummings model, feasible of experimental realization in cavity or ion-trap quantum electrodynamics, can approximately produce nonlinear coherent states of the field. We introduce these nonlinear coherent states of the field as $2m$-photon added or subtracted coherent states in terms of raising and lowering field operators, also known as London phase operators or Susskind-Glogower operators.
