Formation of Incommensurate Charge Density Waves in Cuprates

Although charge density waves (CDWs) are omnipresent in cuprate high-temperature superconductors, they occur at significantly different wavevectors, confounding efforts to understand their formation mechanism. Here, we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering to investigate the doping- and temperature-dependent CDW evolution in La2-xBaxCuO4 (x=0.115-0.155). We discovered that the CDW develops in two stages with decreasing temperature. A precursor CDW with quasi-commensurate wavevector emerges first at high-temperature. This doping-independent precursor CDW correlation originates from the CDW phase mode coupled with a phonon and "seeds" the low-temperature CDW with strongly doping dependent wavevector. Our observation reveals the precursor CDW and its phase mode as the building blocks of the highly intertwined electronic ground state in the cuprates.

Momentum-resolved lattice dynamics of parent and electron-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$

The mixing of orbital and spin character in the wave functions of the $5d$ iridates has led to predictions of strong couplings among their lattice, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. As well as realizing a novel spin-orbit assisted Mott-insulating ground state, the perovskite iridate Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ has strong similarities with the cuprate La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, which on doping hosts a charge-density wave that appears intimately connected to high-temperature superconductivity. These phenomena can be sensitively probed through momentum-resolved measurements of the lattice dynamics, made possible by meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Here we report the first such measurements for both parent and electron-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$. We find that the low-energy phonon dispersions and intensities in both compounds are well described by the same nonmagnetic density functional theory calculation. In the parent compound, no changes of the phonons on magnetic ordering are discernible within the experimental resolution, and in the doped compound no anomalies are apparent due to charge-density waves. These measurements extend our knowledge of the lattice properties of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ and constrain the couplings of the phonons to magnetic and charge order.

Optimization of neutron diffraction from phase-gratings

The recent development of phase-grating moiré neutron interferometry promises a wide range of impactful experiments from dark-field imaging of material microstructure to precise measurements of fundamental constants. However, the contrast of 3 % obtained using this moiré interferometer was well below the theoretical prediction of 30 % using ideal gratings. It is suspected that non-ideal aspects of the phase-gratings was a leading contributor to this deficiency and that phase-gratings needed to be quantitatively assessed and optimized. Here we characterize neutron diffraction from phase-gratings using Bragg diffraction crystals to determine the optimal phase-grating orientations. We show well-defined diffraction peaks and explore perturbations to the diffraction peaks and the effects on interferometer contrast as a function of grating alignment. This technique promises to improve the contrast of the grating interferometers by providing in-situ aides to grating alignment.

Sub-micrometer resolution neutron tomography

We demonstrate a neutron tomography technique with sub-micrometer spatial resolution. Our method consists of measuring neutron diffraction spectra using a double crystal diffractometer as a function of sample rotation and then using a phase retrieval algorithm followed by tomographic reconstruction to generate a density map of the sample. In this first demonstration, silicon phase-gratings are used as samples, the periodic structure of which allows the shape of the gratings to be imaged without the need of position sensitive detectors. Topological features found in the reconstructions also appear in scanning electron micrographs. The reconstructions have a resolution of about 300 nm, which is over an order of magnitude smaller than the resolution of radiographic, phase contrast, differential phase contrast, and dark field neutron tomography methods. Further optimization of the underlying phase recovery and tomographic reconstruction algorithm is also considered.

Persistent Charge Density Wave Memory in a Cuprate Superconductor

Although charge density wave (CDW) correlations appear to be a ubiquitous feature of the superconducting cuprates, their disparate properties suggest a crucial role for coupling or pinning of the CDW to lattice deformations and disorder. While diffraction intensities can demonstrate the occurrence of CDW domain formation, the lack of scattering phase information has limited our understanding of this process. Here, we report coherent resonant x-ray speckle correlation analysis, which directly determines the reproducibility of CDW domain patterns in La1.875Ba0.125CuO4 (LBCO 1/8) with thermal cycling. While CDW order is only observed below 54 K, where a structural phase transition results in equivalent Cu-O bonds, we discover remarkably reproducible CDW domain memory upon repeated cycling to temperatures well above that transition. That memory is only lost on cycling across the transition at 240(3) K that restores the four-fold symmetry of the copper-oxide planes. We infer that the structural-domain twinning pattern that develops below 240 K determines the CDW pinning landscape below 54 K. These results open a new view into the complex coupling between charge and lattice degrees of freedom in superconducting cuprates.

Observation of Double Weyl Phonons in Parity-Breaking FeSi

Condensed matter systems have now become a fertile ground to discover emerging topological quasi-particles with symmetry protected modes. While many studies have focused on Fermionic excitations, the same conceptual framework can also be applied to bosons yielding new types of topological states. Motivated by the recent theoretical prediction of double-Weyl phonons in transition metal monosilicides [Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 016401 (2018)], we directly measured the phonon dispersion in parity-breaking FeSi using inelastic x-ray scattering. By comparing the experimental data with theoretical calculations, we make the first observation of double-Weyl points in FeSi, which will be an ideal material to explore emerging Bosonic excitations and its topologically non-trivial properties.

Decoupled Pairing Amplitude and Electronic Coherence in Iron-Based Superconductors

Here we use angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study superconductivity that emerges in two extreme cases, from a Fermi liquid phase (LiFeAs) and an incoherent bad-metal phase (FeTe0.55Se0.45). We find that although the electronic coherence can strongly reshape the single-particle spectral function in the superconducting state, it is decoupled from the maximum superconducting pairing amplitude, which shows a universal scaling that is valid for all FeSCs. Our observation excludes pairing scenarios in the BCS and the BEC limit for FeSCs and calls for a universal strong coupling pairing mechanism for the FeSCs.

Remarkable Stability of Charge Density Wave Order in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$

The occurrence of charge-density-wave (CDW) order in underdoped cuprates is now well established, although the precise nature of the CDW and its relationship with superconductivity is not. Theoretical proposals include contrasting ideas such as that pairing may be driven by CDW fluctuations or that static CDWs may intertwine with a spatially-modulated superconducting wave function. We test the dynamics of CDW order in La$_{1.825}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_4$ by using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) at the CDW wave vector, detected resonantly at the Cu $L_3$-edge. We find that the CDW domains are strikingly static, with no evidence of significant fluctuations up to 2\,\nicefrac{3}{4} hours. We discuss the implications of these results for some of the competing theories.

Incommensurate phonon anomaly and the nature of charge density waves in cuprates

While charge density wave (CDW) instabilities are ubiquitous to superconducting cuprates, the different ordering wavevectors in various cuprate families have hampered a unified description of the CDW formation mechanism. Here we investigate the temperature dependence of the low energy phonons in the canonical CDW ordered cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$. We discover that the phonon softening wavevector associated with CDW correlations becomes temperature dependent in the high-temperature precursor phase and changes from a wavevector of 0.238 reciprocal space units (r.l.u.) below the ordering transition temperature up to 0.3~r.l.u. at 300~K. This high-temperature behavior shows that "214"-type cuprates can host CDW correlations at a similar wavevector to previously reported CDW correlations in non-"214"-type cuprates such as YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6+δ}$. This indicates that cuprate CDWs may arise from the same underlying instability despite their apparently different low temperature ordering wavevectors.

High-temperature charge density wave correlations in La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ without spin-charge locking

Although all superconducting cuprates display charge-ordering tendencies, their low-temperature properties are distinct, impeding efforts to understand the phenomena within a single conceptual framework. While some systems exhibit stripes of charge and spin, with a locked periodicity, others host charge density waves (CDWs) without any obviously related spin order. Here we use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to follow the evolution of charge correlations in the canonical stripe ordered cuprate La$_{1.875}$Ba$_{0.125}$CuO$_{4}$ (LBCO~$1/8$) across its ordering transition. We find that high-temperature charge correlations are unlocked from the wavevector of the spin correlations, signaling analogies to CDW phases in various other cuprates. This indicates that stripe order at low temperatures is stabilized by the coupling of otherwise independent charge and spin density waves, with important implications for the relation between charge and spin correlations in the cuprates.

Host galaxy identification for binary black hole mergers with long baseline gravitational wave detectors

The detection of three black hole binary coalescence events by Advanced LIGO allows the science benefits of future detectors to be evaluated. In this paper we report the science benefits of one or two 8km arm length detectors based on the doubling of key parameters in an advanced LIGO type detector, combined with realisable enhancements. It is shown that the total detection rate for sources similar to those already detected, would increase to $\sim$ 10$^{3}$--10$^{5}$ per year. Within 0.4Gpc we find that around 10 of these events would be localizable to within $\sim 10^{-1}$ deg$^2$. This is sufficient to make unique associations or to rule out a direct association with the brightest galaxies in optical surveys (at r-band magnitudes of 17 or above) or for deeper limits (down to r-band magnitudes of 20) yield statistically significant associations. The combination of angular resolution and event rate would benefit precision testing of formation models, cosmic evolution and cosmological studies.

The Influence of Dual-Recycling on Parametric Instabilities at Advanced LIGO

Laser interferometers with high circulating power and suspended optics, such as the LIGO gravitational wave detectors, experience an optomechanical coupling effect known as a parametric instability: the runaway excitation of a mechanical resonance in a mirror driven by the optical field. This can saturate the interferometer sensing and control systems and limit the observation time of the detector. Current mitigation techniques at the LIGO sites are successfully suppressing all observed parametric instabilities, and focus on the behaviour of the instabilities in the Fabry-Perot arm cavities of the interferometer, where the instabilities are first generated. In this paper we model the full dual-recycled Advanced LIGO design with inherent imperfections. We find that the addition of the power- and signal-recycling cavities shapes the interferometer response to mechanical modes, resulting in up to four times as many peaks. Changes to the accumulated phase or Gouy phase in the signal-recycling cavity have a significant impact on the parametric gain, and therefore which modes require suppression.

Three Phase-Grating Moire Neutron Interferometer for Large Interferometer Area Applications

We demonstrate a three phase-grating neutron interferometer as a robust candidate for large area interferometry applications and characterization of materials. This novel far-field moire technique allows for broad wavelength acceptance and relaxed requirements related to fabrication and alignment, circumventing the main obstacles associated with perfect crystal neutron interferometry. Interference fringes were observed with a total interferometer length of four meters, and the effects of an aluminum 6061 alloy sample on the coherence of the system was examined. Experiments to measure the autocorrelation length of samples and the universal gravitational constant are proposed and discussed.

Static Charge Density Wave Order in the Superconducting State of La2-xBaxCuO4

Charge density wave (CDW) correlations feature prominently in the phase diagram of the cuprates, motivating competing theories of whether fluctuating CDW correlations aid superconductivity or whether static CDW order coexists with superconductivity in inhomogeneous or spatially modulated states. Here we report Cu $L$-edge resonant x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS) measurements of CDW correlations in superconducting La$_{2-x}$Ba$_x$CuO$_4$ $x=0.11$. Static CDW order is shown to exist in the superconducting state at low temperatures and to persist up to at least 85\% of the CDW transition temperature. We discuss the implications of our observations for how \emph{nominally} competing order parameters can coexist in the cuprates.

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering study of spin-wave excitations in the cuprate parent compound Ca$_{2}$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$

By means of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Cu L$_3$ edge, we measured the spin wave dispersion along $\langle$100$\rangle$ and $\langle$110$\rangle$ in the undoped cuprate Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. The data yields a reliable estimate of the superexchange parameter $J$ = 135 $\pm$ 4 meV using a classical spin-1/2 2D Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor interactions and including quantum fluctuations. Including further exchange interactions increases the estimate to $J$ = 141 meV. The 40 meV dispersion between the magnetic Brillouin zone boundary points (1/2,\,0) and (1/4,\,1/4) indicates that next-nearest neighbor interactions in this compound are intermediate between the values found in La$_{2}$CuO$_4$ and Sr$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$. Owing to the low-$Z$ elements composing Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, the present results may enable a reliable comparison with the predictions of quantum many-body calculations, which would improve our understanding of the role of magnetic excitations and of electronic correlations in cuprates.

Quantum correlation measurements in interferometric gravitational wave detectors

Quantum fluctuations in the phase and amplitude quadratures of light set limitations on the sensitivity of modern optical instruments. The sensitivity of the interferometric gravitational wave detectors, such as the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational wave Observatory (LIGO), is limited by quantum shot noise, quantum radiation pressure noise, and a set of classical noises. We show how the quantum properties of light can be used to distinguish these noises using correlation techniques. Particularly, in the first part of the paper we show estimations of the coating thermal noise and gas phase noise, hidden below the quantum shot noise in the Advanced LIGO sensitivity curve. We also make projections on the observatory sensitivity during the next science runs. In the second part of the paper we discuss the correlation technique that reveals the quantum radiation pressure noise from the background of classical noises and shot noise. We apply this technique to the Advanced LIGO data, collected during the first science run, and experimentally estimate the quantum correlations and quantum radiation pressure noise in the interferometer for the first time.

Doping dependence of the magnetic excitations in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

The magnetic correlations within the cuprates have undergone intense scrutiny as part of efforts to understand high temperature superconductivity. We explore the evolution of the magnetic correlations along the nodal direction of the Brillouin zone in La2-xSrxCuO4, spanning the doping phase diagram from the anti-ferromagnetic Mott insulator at x = 0 to the metallic phase at x = 0.26. Magnetic excitations along this direction are found to be systematically softened and broadened with doping, at a higher rate than the excitations along the anti-nodal direction. This phenomenology is discussed in terms of the nature of the magnetism in the doped cuprates. Survival of the high energy magnetic excitations, even in the overdoped regime, indicates that these excitations are marginal to pairing, while the influence of the low energy excitations remains ambiguous.

ARPES observation of Mn-pnictide hybridization and negligible band structure renormalization in BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$

We performed an angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of BaMn$_2$As$_2$ and BaMn$_2$Sb$_2$, which are isostructural to the parent compound BaFe$_2$As$_2$ of the 122 family of ferropnictide superconductors. We show the existence of a strongly $k_z$-dependent band gap with a minimum at the Brillouin zone center, in agreement with their semiconducting properties. Despite the half-filling of the electronic 3$d$ shell, we show that the band structure in these materials is almost not renormalized from the Kohn-Sham bands of density functional theory. Our photon energy dependent study provides evidence for Mn-pnictide hybridization, which may play a role in tuning the electronic correlations in these compounds.
