Stingray: A Modern Python Library For Spectral Timing

This paper describes the design and implementation of Stingray, a library in Python built to perform time series analysis and related tasks on astronomical light curves. Its core functionality comprises a range of Fourier analysis techniques commonly used in spectral-timing analysis, as well as extensions for analyzing pulsar data, simulating data sets, and statistical modeling. Its modular build allows for easy extensions and incorporation of its methods into data analysis workflows and pipelines. We aim for the library to be a platform for the implementation of future spectral-timing techniques. Here, we describe the overall vision and framework, core functionality, extensions, and connections to high-level command-line and graphical interfaces. The code is well-tested, with a test coverage of currently 95%, and is accompanied by extensive API documentation and a set of step-by-step tutorials.

Examining the Presence of Gender Bias in Customer Reviews Using Word Embedding

Humans have entered the age of algorithms. Each minute, algorithms shape countless preferences from suggesting a product to a potential life partner. In the marketplace algorithms are trained to learn consumer preferences from customer reviews because user-generated reviews are considered the voice of customers and a valuable source of information to firms. Insights mined from reviews play an indispensable role in several business activities ranging from product recommendation, targeted advertising, promotions, segmentation etc. In this research, we question whether reviews might hold stereotypic gender bias that algorithms learn and propagate Utilizing data from millions of observations and a word embedding approach, GloVe, we show that algorithms designed to learn from human language output also learn gender bias. We also examine why such biases occur: whether the bias is caused because of a negative bias against females or a positive bias for males. We examine the impact of gender bias in reviews on choice and conclude with policy implications for female consumers, especially when they are unaware of the bias, and the ethical implications for firms.

Bulk viscosity in hyperonic star and r-mode instability

We consider a rotating neutron star with the presence of hyperons in its core, using an equation of state in an effective chiral model within the relativistic mean field approximation. We calculate the hyperonic bulk viscosity coefficient due to nonleptonic weak interactions. By estimating the damping timescales of the dissipative processes, we investigate its role in the suppression of gravitationally driven instabilities in the $r$-mode. We observe that $r$-mode instability remains very much significant for hyperon core temperature of around $10^8 $K, resulting in a comparatively larger instability window. We find that such instability can reduce the angular velocity of the rapidly rotating star considerably upto $\sim0.04 Ω_K$, with $Ω_K$ as the Keplerian angular velocity.

Constraints on nuclear matter parameters of an Effective Chiral Model

Within an effective non-linear chiral model, we evaluate nuclear matter parameters exploiting the uncertainties in the nuclear saturation properties. The model is sternly constrained with minimal free parameters, which display the interlink between nuclear incompressibility ($K$), the nucleon effective mass ($m^{\star}$), the pion decay constant ($f_π$) and the $σ-$meson mass ($m_σ$). The best fit among the various parameter set is then extracted and employed to study the resulting Equation of state (EOS). Further, we also discuss the consequences of imposing constraints on nuclear EOS from Heavy-Ion collision and other phenomenological model predictions.

Pairing in spin polarized two-species fermionic mixtures with mass asymmetry

We discuss on the pairing mechanism of fermions with mismatch in their fermi momenta due to a mass asymmetry. Using a variational ansatz for the ground state we also discuss the BCS -BEC crossover of this system. It is shown that the breached pairing solution with a single fermi surface is stable in the BEC regime. We also include the temperatures effect on the fermion pairing within an approximation that is valid for temperatures much below the critical temperature.

On attributes of a Rotating Neutron star with a Hyperon core

We study the effect of rotation on global properties of neutron star with a hyperon core in an effective chiral model with varying nucleon effective mass within a mean field approach. The resulting gross properties of the rotating compact star sequences are then compared and analyzed with other theoretical predictions and observations from neutron stars. The maximum mass of the compact star predicted by the model lies in the range $(1.4-2.4) ~M_{\odot}$ at Kepler frequency $Ω_K$, which is consistant with recent observation of high mass stars thereby reflecting the sensitivity of the underlying nucleon effective mass in the dense matter EoS. We also discuss the implications of the experimental constraints from the flow data from heavy-ion collisions on the global properties of the rotating neutron stars.

Confinement, Quark Matter Equation of State and Hybrid Stars

We consider here quark matter equation of state in a relativistic harmonic confinement model at zero temperature. The same is considered to study phase transition of neutron matter to quark matter at high densities. This, along with a phenomenological equation of state in the neutron matter sector is used to study hybrid stars. Using Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff equations, stable solutions for hybrid stars are obtained with a maximum mass of 1.98 $M_\odot$ and radii around 10 kms with a quark core of about 1 to 2 kilometers.

Vacuum Structure in QCD with Quark and Gluon Condensates

We consider here the vacuum structure in QCD with both quark and gluon condensates and a variational ansatz for the ground state. The method is nonperturbative using only equal time algebra for the field operators. We then find that a constrained energy minimisation of the Hamiltonian leads to a QCD vacuum with both quark and gluon condensates for $α_s > α_c=0.62$. Pion decay constant and the charge radius of the pion seem to fix the QCD coupling constant $α_s$ as 1.28. The approach opens up possibilities of relating the mysterious vacuum structure with common place hadronic properties.

Gluon Condensates, Quark Matter Equation of State and Quark Stars

We consider here quark matter equation of state including strange quarks and taking into account a nontrivial vacuum structure for QCD with gluon condensates. The parameters of condendsate function are determined from minimisation of the thermodynamic potential. The scale parameter of the gluon condensates is fixed from the SVZ parameter in the context of QCD sum rules at zero temperature and zero baryon density. The equation of state for strange matter at zero temperature as derived is used to study quark star structure using Tolman Oppenheimer Volkoff equations. Stable solutions for quark stars are obtained with a large Chandrasekhar limit as 3.2 $M_\odot$ and radii around 17 kms.

A Variational Approach to Bound States in Quantum Field Theory

We consider here in a toy model an approach to bound state problem in a nonperturbative manner using equal time algebra for the interacting field operators. Potential is replaced by offshell bosonic quanta inside the bound state of nonrelativistic particles. The bosonic dressing is determined through energy minimisation, and mass renormalisation is carried out in a nonperturbative manner. Since the interaction is through a scalar field, it does not include spin effects. The model however nicely incorporates an intuitive picture of hadronic bound states in which the gluon fields dress the quarks providing the binding between them and also simulate the gluonic content of hadrons in deep inelastic collisions.

Chiral Symmetry Breaking and Pion Wave Function

We consider here chiral symmetry breaking through nontrivial vacuum structure with quark antiquark condensates. We then relate the condensate function to the wave function of pion as a Goldstone mode. This simultaneously yields the pion also as a quark antiquark bound state as a localised zero mode in vacuum. We illustrate the above with Nambu Jona-Lasinio model to calculate different pionic properties in terms of the vacuum structure for breaking of exact or approximate chiral symmetry, as well as the condensate fluctuations giving rise to $σ$ mesons.

Neutron matter - Quark matter phase transition and Quark star

We consider the neutron matter quark matter phase transition along with possible existence of hybrid quark stars. The equation of state for neutron matter is obtained using a nonperturbative method with pion dressing of the neutron matter and an analysis similar to that of symmetric nuclear matter. The quark matter sector is treated perturbatively in the small distance domain. For bag constant $B^{1/4}$=148 MeV, a first order phase transition is seen. In the context of neutron quark hybrid stars, Tolman-Oppenheimer-Volkoff equations are solved using the equations of state for quark matter and for neutron matter with a phase transition as noted earlier. Stable solutions for such stars are obtained with the Chandrasekhar limit as 1.58 $M_\odot$ and radius around 10 km. The bulk of the star is quark matter with a thin crust of neutron matter of less than a kilometer.

QCD at Finite Temperature: A Variational Approach:

We develop here a nonperturbative framework to study quantum chromodynamics (QCD) at finite temperatures using the thermofield dynamics (TFD) method of Umezawa. The methodology considered here is self-consistent and variational. There is a dynamical generation of a magnetic gluon mass. This eliminates the infrared problems associated with perturbative QCD calculations at finite temperatures. We obtain here the thermodynamical quantities like free energy density, pressure and entropy density. We also calculate the temperature dependence of SVZ parameter ${α_{s} \over π}<{G^a}_{μν} {G^{a μν}}>$. The condensate vanishes at the critical temperature in accordance with recent hot sum rule calculations. The present method gives an insight to the vacuum structure in QCD at zero temperature as well as at finite temperatures in a co-ordinated manner. (to appear in Z. Physik C )

Effective Potentials in QCD and Chiral Symmetry Breaking

We consider chiral symmetry breaking through nontrivial vacuum structure with an explicit construct for the vacuum with quark antiquark condensates in QCD with Coulomb gauge for different phenomenological potentials. The dimensional parameter for the condensate function gets related to $<{\bar ψ}ψ>$ of Shifman, Vainshtein and Zakharov. We then relate the condensate function to the wave function of pion as a Goldstone mode. This simultaneously yields the pion also as a quark antiquark bound state as a localised zero mode of vacuum. We then calculate different pionic properties using the wave function as obtained from the vacuum structure. (to appear in Z. Phys. C)

Hot Nuclear Matter : A Variational Approach

We develop a nonperturbative technique in field theory to study properties of infinite nuclear matter at zero temperature as well as at finite temperatures. Here we dress the nuclear matter with off-mass shell pions. The techniques of thermofield dynamics are used for finite temperature calculations. Equation of state is derived from the dynamics of the interacting system in a self consistent manner. The transition temperature for nuclear matter appears to be around 15 MeV.
