Spin Gaps in High Temperature Superconductors

The phenomenology and theory of spin gap effects in high temperature superconductors is summarized. It is argued that the spin gap behavior can only be explained by a model of charge 0 spin 1/2 fermions which become paired into singlets and that there are both theoretical and experimental reasons for believing that the pairing is greatly enhanced in the bilayer structure of the $YBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x}$ system. This article will appear in the Proceedings of the Stanford Conference on Spectroscopies in Novel Superconductors. Interplane relaxation and the bilayer coupling in Y$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15}$

The origin of the spin gap in the underdoped cuprate superconductors is still mysterious. Experimental evidence from neutron scattering and NMR experiments indicates that the spin gap might be present only in the bilayer compounds. A naive calculation for a two plane Heisenberg model locates the order-disorder transition only for very large exchange coupling between the bilayers. We propose a interplane relaxation experiment which might quantitatively estimate the strength of the bilayer coupling. We make detailed predictions for the size and the temperature dependence of the interplane relaxation rate.

Cross relaxation and the bilayer coupling in YBCO

There is strong experimental evidence for substantial antiferromagnetic coupling between the CuO$_2$ planes of the bilayers in YBCO compounds. The acoustic mode of the spin excitation spectrum has been measured but the optic mode has not been observed. Theoretical estimates suggest values for the antiferromagnetic interplane coupling as large as 10 meV. It has been proposed that this coupling is responsible for the spin gap in the underdoped YBCO compounds. In the recently synthesized compounds Y$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15}$ with alternating single/double chain blocks, it is possible to distinguish between the CuO$_2$ planes in a bilayer. We propose a nuclear magnetic cross relaxation experiment to directly measure the strength of the coupling between the two planes of a bilayer. The temperature dependence and magnitude of this cross relaxation rate is predicted.

Spin Gaps and Bilayer Coupling in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$

We investigate the relevance to the physics of underdoped YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{\rm 6+x}$ and YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ of the quantum critical point which occurs in a model of two antiferromagnetically coupled planes of antiferromagnetically correlated spins. We use a Schwinger boson mean field theory and a scaling analysis to obtain the phase diagram of the model and the temperature and frequency dependence of various susceptibilities and relaxation rates. We distinguish between a low $ω,T$ coupled-planes regime in which the optic spin excitations are frozen out and a high $ω,T$ decoupled-planes regime in which the two planes fluctuate independently. In the coupled-planes regime the yttrium nuclear relaxation rate at low temperatures is larger relative to the copper and oxygen rates than would be naively expected in a model of uncorrelated planes. Available data suggest that in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ the crossover from the coupled to the decoupled planes regime occurs at $T 700K$ or $T \sim 200K$. The predicted correlation length is of order 6 lattice constants at $T=200K$. Experimental data related to the antiferromagnetic susceptibility of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ may be made consistent with the theory, but available data for the uniform susceptibility are inconsistent with the theory.

Phase diagram of the bose Hubbard model

The first reliable analytic calculation of the phase diagram of the bose gas on a $d$-dimensional lattice with on-site repulsion is presented. In one dimension, the analytic calculation is in excellent agreement with the numerical Monte Carlo results. In higher dimensions, the deviations from the Monte Carlo calculations are larger, but the correct shape of the Mott insulator lobes is still obtained. Explicit expressions for the energy of the Mott and the ``defect'' phase are given in a strong-coupling expansion.

Aspects of Spin Dynamics in the Cuprate Superconductors

One of the interesting aspects of the CuO superconductors is that superconductivity is happening so close to the antiferromagnetic state. The nuclear magnetic resonance and the recent neutron scattering experiments clearly indicate that magnetic correlations persist in to the heavily doped regime. In this paper we will discuss some of the details of the coupling of the nuclear magnetic spin to the conduction electron spins. Furthermore we will show that a simple band structure can explain the recent neutron scattering data in the \LaSrCuO material for the optimal concentration of $x\approx 0.15$ if the lifetime effects are included.

Spin Gaps and Spin Dynamics in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 and YBa_2Cu_3O7_δ

A magnetic susceptibility which decreases with decreasing temperature is observed in all $CuO_2$ based superconductors with less than optimal doping. We propose that in $La_{2-x} Sr_x CuO_4$ this is due to antiferromagnetic ordering which is prevented by the low spatial dimensionality while in $YBa_2 Cu_3 O_{6.6}$ it is due to the interplay between antiferromagnetic fluctuations within a plane and singlet pairing of electrons between nearest neighbor planes.
