Effects of environment on stellar metallicity profiles of late-type galaxies in the CALIFA survey

We explore the effects of environment in the evolution of late-type galaxies by studying the radial profiles of light- and mass-weighted metallicities of galaxies in two discrete environments: field and groups. We use a sample of 167 late-type galaxies, with stellar masses $9\le \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le 12$, drawn from the CALIFA survey. We make a study of the metallicity of galaxies in these two environments which includes the comparison of the metallicity as a function of the radius, at a characteristic scale, and as a function of a the stellar mass surface density. We find significant differences between group and field late-type galaxies in terms of their metallicity, in the sense that group galaxies are systematically more metallic than their field counterparts. We find that field galaxies have, in general, metallicity profiles that show a negative gradient in their inner regions, and a shallower profile at larger radii. This contrasts with the metallicity profiles of galaxies in groups, which tend to be flat in the inner regions, and to have a negative gradient in the outer parts. Regarding the metallicity at the characteristic radius of the luminosity profiles, we consistently find that it is higher for group galaxies irrespective of galaxy mass. At fixed local stellar surface mass density, group galaxies are again more metallic, also the dependence of metallicity on surface density is less important for group galaxies. The evidence of a clear difference on the metallicity of group and field galaxies, as a function of mass, spatial scale, and local stellar mass density, are indicative of the different evolutionary paths that galaxies in groups and in the field have followed. We discuss possible implications of the observed differences.

Effects of environment on sSFR profiles of late-type galaxies in the CALIFA survey

We explore the effects of environment on star formation in late-type galaxies by studying the dependence of the radial profiles of specific star formation rate (sSFR) on environment and the stellar mass, using a sample of 275 late-type galaxies drawn from the CALIFA survey. We consider three different discrete environments: field galaxies, galaxies in pairs, and galaxies in groups, with stellar masses $9\le \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le 12$, and compare their sSFR profiles across the environments. Our results suggest that the stellar mass is the main factor determining the sSFR profiles of late-type galaxies; the influence of AGNs and bars are secondary. We find that the relative size of the bulge plays a key role in depressing star formation towards the center of late-type galaxies. The group environment determines clear differences in the sSFR profiles of galaxies. We find evidence of an outside-in action upon galaxies with stellar masses $9\le \log(M_{\star}/M_{\odot}) \le 10$ in groups. We find a much stronger suppression of star formation in the inner regions of massive galaxies in groups, which may be an indication of a different merger history.

New GTC Spectroscopic Data and a Statistical Study to Better Constrain the Redshift of the BL Lac RGB J2243+203

We present new spectroscopic data of the BL Lac RGB 2243+203, and its surroundings, obtained with the OSIRIS Multi Object Spectrograph (MOS) mounted in the Gran Telescopio Canarias (GTC). The spectra of neither the BL Lac nor its host galaxy show any spectral feature, thus hindering direct determination of its redshift. The spectroscopic redshift distribution of objects in the MOS field of view shows four galaxies with redshift between 0.5258 and 0.5288. We make use of a statistical analysis to test the possibility that the targeted BL Lac may be a member of that group. By using the spectroscopic redshifts obtained with our GTC observations, we found that this probability is between 86% and 93%.

The BL-Lac gamma-ray blazar PKS 1424+240 associated with a group of galaxies at z=0.6010

PKS 1424+240 is a BL-Lac blazar with unknown redshift that was detected at high-energy gamma rays by Fermi-LAT with a hard spectrum. At VHE, it was first detected by VERITAS and later confirmed by MAGIC. Its spectral energy distribution is highly attenuated at VHE gamma rays, which is coherent with distant sources. Several estimations enabled the redshift to be constrained to the range 0.6 < z < 1.3. These results place PKS 1424+240 in the very interesting condition of being probably the most distant blazar that has been detected at VHE. The ambiguity in the redshift is still large enough to prevent precise studies of the EBL and the intrinsic blazar spectrum. Given the difficulty of measuring spectroscopic redshifts for BL-Lac objects directly, we aim to establish a reliable redshift value for this blazar by finding its host group of galaxies. Elliptical galaxies are associated with groups, and BL-Lac objects are typically hosted by them, so we decided to search for the host group of the blazar. For this, we performed optical spectroscopic observations of thirty objects in the field of view of PKS 1424+240 using the Gemini MOS. After analysing the data for groups, we evaluated the probability of finding groups of galaxies by chance around the position of PKS 1424+240, using a deep catalogue of groups. We also used photometric data from the SDSS catalogue to analyse the red sequence of the proposed blazar host group. We found a new group of galaxies with eight members at z = 0.6010 +- 0.003, a virial radius of R_vir = 1.53 Mpc, and a velocity dispersion of sigma_v = 813 +- 187 km/s. The photometric study indicates that more members are probably populating this previously uncatalogued group of galaxies. The probability of PKS 1424+240 being a member of this group was found to be 98%. The new group of galaxies found at z = 0.6010 +- 0.003 is very likely hosting PKS 1424+240.

Redshift measurement of the BL-Lac gamma-ray blazar PKS 1424+240

PKS 1424+240 is a BL-Lac blazar with unknown redshift detected at high-energy gamma rays by Fermi-LAT with a hard spectrum. It was first detected at very-high-energy by VERITAS and latter confirmed by MAGIC. Attempts to find limits on its redshift include three estimations by modeling gamma-ray observations, and one obtained by analyzing Lyb and Lyg absorption lines observed in the far-UV spectra (from HST/COS) caused by absorbing gas along the line of sight. They allowed to constrain the redshift range to 0:6<z<1:19, which places PKS 1424+240 in the very interesting condition to be one of the few candidates to be the most distant blazars detected at very-high-energy gamma rays. Redshift determination of BL-Lac objects are difficult to achieve. We have found that redshift of blazars can be determined by its association to a galaxy group or cluster. To explore this possibility for PKS 1424+240, we have carried out spectroscopic measurements with the Gemini North telescope of galaxies in its field of view. In this work we present the optical spectrum of PKS 1424+240 and show preliminary results of the blazar environment characterization. Spectroscopic redshift using the optical spectrum of PKS 1424+240 could not be determined in this work.

The BL-Lac gamma-ray blazar PKS 0447-439 as a probable member of a group of galaxies at z=0.343

The BL-Lac blazar PKS 0447-439 is one of the brightest HE gamma-ray sources that were first detected by Fermi-LAT. It was also detected by H.E.S.S. at VHE gamma-rays, which allowed constraining the redshift of PKS 0447-439 by considering the attenuation caused by gamma-ray interactions with ambient photons in the extragalactic background light (EBL). This constraint agreed with color-magnitude and spectroscopic redshift constraints (0.179 < z < 0.56), Recently, however, a much higher redshift was proposed for this blazar (z > 1.2). This value was debated because if true, it would imply either that the relevant absorption processes of gamma-rays are not well understood or that the EBL is dramatically different from what is believed today. This high redshift was not confirmed by three independent new spectroscopic observations at high signal-to-noise ratios. Given that BL-Lac are typically hosted by elliptical galaxies, which in turn are associated with groups, we aim to find the host group of galaxies of PKS 0447-439. The ultimate goal is to estimate a redshift for this blazar. Spectra of twenty-one objects in the field of view of PKS 0447-439 were obtained with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. Based on the redshifts and coordinates of these galaxies, we searched for groups of galaxies. Using a deep catalog of groups, we studied the probability of finding by chance a group of galaxies in the line of sight of PKS 0447-439. We identified a group of galaxies that was not previously cataloged at z = 0.343 with seven members, a virial radius of 0.42 Mpc, and a velocity dispersion of 622 km s^-1. We found that the probability of the host galaxy of PKS 0447-439 to be a member of the new group is >= 97%. Therefore, we propose to adopt z = 0.343 +- 0.002 as the most likely redshift for PKS 0447-439.

Galaxy properties in clusters. II. Backsplash Galaxies

We explore the properties of galaxies on the outskirts of clusters and their dependence on recent dynamical history in order to understand the real impact that the cluster core has on the evolution of galaxies. We analyse the properties of more than 1000 galaxies brighter than $M_{^{0.1}r}$=-19.6 on the outskirts of 90 clusters ($1<r/r_{vir}<2$) in the redshift range $0.05<z<0.10$. Using the line of sight velocity, we selected high and low velocity subsamples. Theoretical predictions indicate that a significant fraction of the first subsample should be backsplash galaxies, that is, objects that have already orbited near the cluster centre. A significant proportion of the sample of high relative velocity HV galaxies seems to be composed of infalling objects. Our results suggest that, at fixed stellar mass, late type galaxies in the low velocity LV sample are systematically older, redder and have formed fewer stars during the last 3 Gyrs than galaxies in the HV sample. This result is consistent with models that assume that the central regions of clusters are effective in quenching the star formation by means of processes such as ram pressure stripping or strangulation. At fixed stellar mass, LV galaxies show some evidence of having higher surface brightness and smaller size than HV galaxies. These results are consistent with the scenario where galaxies that have orbited the central regions of clusters are more likely to suffer tidal effects, producing loss of mass as well as a redistribution of matter towards more compact configurations. Finally, we found a higher fraction of ET galaxies in the LV sample, supporting the idea that the central region of clusters of galaxies may contribute to the transformation of morphological types towards earlier types.

On the redshift of the gamma-ray blazar PKS 0447-439: Optical spectroscopy using Gemini observations with high S/N ratio

The BL-Lac blazar PKS 0447-439 was detected at very high energy gamma-rays by HESS following the discovery by Fermi-LAT. The lack of both emission and absorption lines in BL-Lacs make the estimation of their redshifts very difficult. Modeling the drop in gamma-ray spectra it was possible to have an estimation of redshift for PKS 0447-439 of z approx 0.2, which is compatible with the value z=0.205 reported by the identification of Ca II absorption lines in optical spectra. By the identification of a weak line of Mg II using spectra with average signal-to-noise S/N approx 80, it has been recently reported a lower limit for the redshift of this blazar of z<=1.246. Triggered by this controversy, we have proposed new optical observations with the Gemini South telescope to perform further spectroscopic analysis with very high S/N ratio (approx 200-500). In this work we present a new optical spectrum of PKS 0447-439, and report on the analysis and results of such observations. Even with this significantly high quality signal we were not able to identify any spectral features to allow an estimation of the redshift. In agreement with other recent studies, we identify the Mg II line reported previously as originated in the Earth's atmosphere, and conclude the lower limit of the redshift is incorrect. More interestingly, we could not identify the Ca II absorption lines used to report a redshift of 0.205.

Galaxy Properties in Clusters: Dependence on the Environment and the Cluster Identification Techniques

We investigate the dependence of several galaxy properties on the environment and cluster identification techniques. We select clusters of galaxies from two catalogues based on the SDSS: the ROSAT-SDSS Galaxy Cluster Survey, and the MaxBCG Catalogue. Based on a volume limited sample of galaxies drawn from the spectroscopic DR5 SDSS, we constructed sub-samples of clusters of galaxies with more than ten members. Scaling relations as well as segregation of galaxy properties as a function of the normalized clustocentric radii are analyzed. The properties of galaxies in clusters are compared with those of field galaxies. Galaxies in X-ray and MaxBCG selected clusters show similar size-luminosity relations. At equal luminosity, late type galaxies in the field have sizes smaller than cluster galaxies of the same morphological type. The Faber-Jackson relation for early-type galaxies in clusters is also the same for X-ray selected and MaxBCG clusters. We found clear differences between the dynamical properties of galaxies in clusters, the brightest cluster galaxies ($BCG_s$) and field galaxies. Using several criteria to classify galaxies into morphological types, we reproduce the well know morphological segregation. The correlation is up to $r/r_{200} \sim 1$. For the whole range of clustocentric distances, X-ray selected clusters present a higher fraction of early type galaxies than MaxBCG clusters. We also found that bright galaxies preferentially inhabit the cluster centers. Median sizes of galaxies, such as the radius that enclose 50% of petrosian flux $r_{50}$, present a behaviour that also depends on the cluster selection criteria. The resultsare discussed in terms of the different processes that affect the evolution of galaxies in different environments.

Sites for Gamma-ray Astronomy in Argentina

We have searched for possible sites in Argentina for the installation of large air Cherenkov telescope arrays and water Cherenkov systems. At present seven candidates are identified at altitudes from 2500 to 4500 m. The highest sites are located at the Northwest of the country, in La Puna. Sites at 2500 and 3100 m are located in the West at El Leoncito Observatory, with excellent infrastructure. A description of these candidate sites is presented with emphasis on infrastructure and climatology.

Photometric observations of Southern Abell Cluster Redshifts Survey Clusters: Structure of galaxies in the inner region of clusters of galaxies

We analyze photometric properties of 1384 cluster galaxies as a function of the normalized distance to cluster center. These galaxies were selected in the central region ($r/r_{200} \leq$ 0.8) of 14 southern Abell clusters chosen from the Southern Abell Cluster Redshifts Survey (SARS). For 507 of these galaxies we also obtained their luminosity profiles. We have studied the morphology-clustercentric distance relation on the basis of the shape parameter $n$ of the Sérsic's law. We also have analyzed the presence of a possible segregation in magnitude for both, the galaxy total luminosity and that of their components (i.e. the bulge and the disk). Results show a marginal ($2σ$ level) decrease of the total luminosity as a function of normalized radius. However, when bulges are analyzed separately, a significant luminosity segregation is found ($3σ$ and $2σ$ for galaxies in projection and member galaxies respectively). The fraction of bulges brighter than $M_B \leq -22$ is three times larger in the core of clusters than in the outer region. Our analysis of the disk component suggests that disks are, on average, less luminous in the cluster core than at $r/r_{200} \sim 0.8$. In addition, we found that the magnitude-size relation as a function of $r/r_{200}$ indicates (at $2σ$ level) that disks are smaller and centrally brighter in the core of clusters. However, the Kormendy relation (the bulge magnitude-size relation) appears to be independent of environment.

Redshifts in the Southern Abell Redshift Survey Clusters. I. The Data

The Southern Abell Redshift Survey contains 39 clusters of galaxies with redshifts in the range 0.0 < z < 0.31 and a median redshift depth of z = 0.0845. SARS covers the region 0 < decl < -65 deg, R.A. < 5h, R.A. > 21h (while avoiding the LMC and SMC) with b > 40. Cluster locations were chosen from the Abell and Abell-Corwin-Olowin catalogs while galaxy positions were selected from the Automatic Plate Measuring Facility galaxy catalog with extinction-corrected magnitudes in the range 15 <= b_j < 19. SARS utilized the Las Campanas 2.5 m duPont telescope, observing either 65 or 128 objects concurrently over a 1.5 sq deg field. New redshifts for 3440 galaxies are reported in the fields of these 39 clusters of galaxies.

Photometric observations of SARS clusters: Galaxy Luminosity Profiles

We have analyzed CCD images of 14 Abell clusters in the R filter of the SARS survey (Way et al 2004), with cz<40000kms^{-1}. We have obtained the luminosity profiles for 507 galaxies of which 232 (46%) have known redshifts. In order to fit the luminosity profiles we used the de Vaucouleurs law for bulge systems, an exponential profile for disk systems and we have also fitted the Sersic's law (r^n) to all galaxy profiles. We have found that 162 (32%) galaxies in the sample have pure r^{1/4} profiles, 168 (33%) have pure exponential profiles, while 93 (18%) galaxies have luminosity profiles that are well fitted by a combination of both bulge and disk profiles. On the other hand, we could not fit the classical bulge + disk profile to the remaining 84 (17%) galaxies of the sample. For such cases we have only used the Sersic law. We have also analyzed how seeing and sky cleaning affect the structural and photometric parameters obtained through profile fitting. In addition, we have studied several relations between these parameters. We have found that bulges and disks show consistency with a unique relation in the μ_e - log(r_e) plane. We also found that bulges and disks obey a magnitude-size relation in the sense that large bulges and disks (large r_e values) have high luminosities. On the other hand, Sersic law fitting parameters n, $rs$ and μ_s show a strong correlation in agreement with other authors suggesting the idea that not only ellipticals but all galaxies are likely to be understood as a one parameter family.

Properties of groups of galaxies in the vicinity of massive clusters

This work analyses the properties of groups of galaxies in the surroundings of clusters. On the basis of a very large public Virgo Consortium Simulation, we identified systems of galaxies in a wide range of masses. Systems with masses greater than $ M_{cut}= 4 \times 10^{14} M_{\odot} h^{-1} $ are considered "host", whereas smaller systems are taken as groups. Our results show that groups properties are affected by the proximity of massive hosts. Physical properties such as velocity dispersion, internal energy ($E$) and virial radius, show an increment, whereas the mean density decreases as the host-group distance is smaller. By analysing groups with different properties, we find that the low mass and the weakly bounded ($E > 0$) subsamples, are strongly affected by the presence of the host; on the other hand, massive groups and groups with $E < 0$ do not show dependence on the host-group distance. Using a sample of groups identified in the final version of the 2dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, we find a very similar velocity dispersion behaviour in the observational data compared to results in the simulation. We also study the dependence of the groups velocity dispersion on the host masses in both, observations and simulation; finding that the larger is the host mass the higher is the effect on its vicinity.

Galaxy groups in the 2dF galaxy redshift survey: A Compactness Analysis of Groups

A comprehensive study on compactness has been carried out on the 2dF Galaxy Group Catalogue constructed by Merchán & Zandivarez. The compactness indexes defined in this work take into account different geometrical constraints in order to explore a wide range of possibilities. Our results show that there is no clear distinction between groups with high and low level of compactness when considering particular properties as the radial velocity dispersion, the relative fraction of galaxies per spectral type and luminosity functions of their galaxy members. Studying the trend of the fraction of galaxies per spectral type as a function of the dimensionless crossing time some signs of dynamical evolution are observed. From the comparison with previous works on compactness we realize that special care should be taken into account for some compactness criteria definitions in order to avoid possible biases in the identification.

Galaxy groups in the 2dF redshift survey: Galaxy Spectral Type Segregation in Groups

The behaviour of the relative fraction of galaxies with different spectral types in groups is analysed as a function of projected local galaxy density and the group-centric distance. The group sample was taken from the 2dF Group Galaxy Calatogue constructed by Merchán & Zandivarez. Our group sample was constrained to have a homogeneous virial mass distribution with redshift. Galaxies belonging to this group sample were selected in order to minimize possible biases such as preferential selection of high luminosity objects. We find a clear distinction between high virial mass groups ($M_V\gsim 10^{13.5} M_{\odot}$) and the less massive ones. While the massive groups show a significant dependence of the relative fraction of low star formation galaxies on local galaxy density and group-centric radius,groups with lower masses show no significant trends. We also cross-correlate our group subsample with the previously identified clusters finding that this sample shows a very similar behaviour as observed in the high virial mass group subsample.
