Nonlinear Hall effect and multichannel conduction in LaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices

We report magneto-transport properties of heterointerfaces between the Mott insulator LaTiO3 and the band insulator SrTiO3 in a delta-doping geometry. At low temperatures, we have found a strong nonlinearity in the magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistivity, which can be effectively controlled by varying the temperature and the electric field. We attribute this effect to multichannel conduction of interfacial charges generated by an electronic reconstruction. In particular, the formation of a highly mobile conduction channel revealed by our data is explained by the greatly increased dielectric permeability of SrTiO3 at low temperatures, and its electric-field dependence reflects the spatial distribution of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas.

Unveiling the ac Dynamics of Ferroelectric Domains by Investigating the Frequency Dependence of Hysteresis Loops

We investigated nonequilibrium domain wall dynamics under an ac field by measuring the hysteresis loops of epitaxial ferroelectric capacitors at various frequencies and temperatures. Polarization switching is induced mostly by thermally activated creep motion at lower frequencies, and by viscous flow motion at higher frequencies. The dynamic crossover between the creep and flow regimes unveils two frequency-dependent scaling regions of hysteresis loops. Based on these findings, we constructed a dynamic phase diagram for hysteretic ferroelectric domain dynamics in the presence of ac fields.

Multiple conducting carriers generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures

We have found that there is more than one type of conducting carriers generated in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures by comparing the sheet carrier density and mobility from optical transmission spectroscopy with those from dc-transport measurements. When multiple types of carriers exist, optical characterization dominantly reflects the contribution from the high-density carriers whereas dc-transport measurements may exaggerate the contribution of the high-mobility carriers even though they are present at low-density. Since the low-temperature mobilities determined by dc-transport in the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 heterostructures are much higher than those extracted by optical method, we attribute the origin of high-mobility transport to the low-density conducting carriers.

Charge transport and magnetization profile at the interface between a correlated metal and an antiferromagnetic insulator

A combination of spectroscopic probes was used to develop a detailed experimental description of the transport and magnetic properties of superlattices composed of the paramagnetic metal CaRuO$_3$ and the antiferromagnetic insulator CaMnO$_3$. The charge carrier density and Ru valence state in the superlattices are not significantly different from those of bulk CaRuO$_3$. The small charge transfer across the interface implied by these observations confirms predictions derived from density functional calculations. However, a ferromagnetic polarization due to canted Mn spins penetrates 3-4 unit cells into CaMnO$_3$, far exceeding the corresponding predictions. The discrepancy may indicate the formation of magnetic polarons at the interface.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Domain Wall Propagation in Epitaxial Ferroelectric Thin Films

We investigated the ferroelectric domain wall propagation in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films over a wide temperature range (3 - 300 K). We measured the domain wall velocity under various electric fields and found that the velocity data is strongly nonlinear with electric fields, especially at low temperature. We found that, as one of surface growth problems, our domain wall velocity data from ferroelectric epitaxial film could be classified into the creep, depinning, and flow regimes due to competition between disorder and elasticity. The measured values of velocity and dynamical exponents indicate that the ferroelectric domain walls in the epitaxial films are fractal and pinned by a disorder-induced local field.

Domain wall motion in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 capacitors investigated by modified piezoresponse force microscopy

We investigated the time-dependent domain wall motion of epitaxial PbZr0.2Ti0.8O3 capacitors 100 nm-thick using modified piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). We obtained successive domain evolution images reliably by combining the PFM with switching current measurements. We observed that domain wall speed (v) decreases with increases in domain size. We also observed that the average value of v, obtained under applied electric field (Eapp),showed creep behavior: i.e. ~ exp(-E0/Eapp)^$μ$ with an exponent $μ$ of 0.9 $\pm$ 0.1 and an activation field E0 of about 700 kV/cm.

Optical Study of the Free Carrier Response of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 Superlattices

We used infrared spectroscopic ellipsometry to investigate the electronic properties of LaTiO3/SrTiO3 superlattices (SLs). Our results indicated that, independent of the SL periodicity and individual layer-thickness, the SLs exhibited a Drude metallic response with sheet carrier density per interface ~3x10^14 cm^-2. This is probably due to the leakage of d-electrons at interfaces from the Mott insulator LaTiO3 to the band insulator SrTiO3. We observed a carrier relaxation time ~ 35 fs and mobility ~ 35 cm^2V^-1s^-1 at 10 K, and an unusual temperature dependence of carrier density that was attributed to the dielectric screening of quantum paraelectric SrTiO3.

Recent Developments in Electromechanical Probing on the Nanoscale: Vector and Spectroscopic Imaging, Resolution, and Molecular Orientation Mapping

Strong coupling between electrical and mechanical phenomena and the presence of switchable polarization have enabled applications of ferroelectric materials for nonvolatile memories (FeRAM), data storage, and ferroelectric lithography. Understanding the local functionality of inorganic ferroelectrics including crystallographic orientation, piezoresponse, elasticity, and mechanisms for polarization switching, requires probing material structure and properties on the level of a single ferroelectric grain or domain. Here, I present recent studies on electromechanical, mechanical, and spectroscopic characterization of ferroelectric materials by Scanning Probe Microscopy. Three-dimensional electromechanical imaging, referred to as Vector Piezoresponse Force Microscopy, is presented. Nanoelectromechanics of PFM, including the structure of coupled electroelastic fields and tip-surface contact mechanics, is analyzed. This establishes a complete continuum mechanics description of the PFM and Atomic Force Acoustic Microscopy imaging mechanisms. Mechanism for local polarization switching is analyzed. The hysteresis loop shape is shown to be determined by the formation of the transient domain below the tip, the size of which increases with the tip bias. Spectroscopic imaging that allows relevant characteristics of switching process, such as imprint bias, pinning strength, remanent and saturation response, is introduced. Finally, resolution in PFM and vector PFM imaging of local crystallographic and molecular orientation and disorder is introduced.

Effects of the Two- Gap Nature on the Microwave Conductivity of 39 K Polycrystalline MgB2 Films

The surface resistance (Rs) and the real part (sigma_1) of the microwave complex conductivity of a ~380 nm-thick polycrystalline MgB2 film with the critical temperature (Tc) of 39.3 K were investigated at ~8.5 GHz as a function of temperature. Two coherence peaks were observed in the sigma_1 versus temperature curve at temperatures of ~0.5 Tc and ~0.9 Tc, respectively, providing a direct evidence for the two-gap nature of MgB2. The film appeared to have a pi-band gap energy of 1.8 meV. For the MgB2 film ion-milled down to the thickness of ~320 nm, two coherence peaks were still observed with the first conductivity peak at ~0.6 Tc. Reduction of Tc by 3 K and reduced normal-state conductivity at Tc were observed along with an enhanced pi-band gap energy of 2.1 meV and a reduced Rs at temperatures below 15 K for the ion-milled film. Calculations based on the gap energies from the weak coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory and the strong coupling theory suggest that both the sigma-band and the pi-band contribute to sigma_1 of the polycrystalline MgB2 films significantly. Our results are in contrast with the observation of single coherence peak at ~0.6 Tc and dominant role of the pi-band in the microwave conductivity of c-axis oriented MgB2 films as reported by Jin et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 91, 127006 (2003)]. Variations in the inter-band coupling constants with the level of disorder can account for the different Tc and sigma_1 behavior for the as-grown and ion-milled films. Our results suggest that enhanced inter-band scattering can improve microwave properties of MgB2 filims at low temperatures due to the larger pi-band gap despite the reduction of Tc.

An improved continuous compositional-spread technique based on pulsed-laser deposition and applicable to large substrate areas

A new method for continuous compositional-spread (CCS) thin-film fabrication based on pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) is introduced. This approach is based on a translation of the substrate heater and the synchronized firing of the excimer laser, with the deposition occurring through a slit-shaped aperture. Alloying is achieved during film growth (possible at elevated temperature) by the repeated sequential deposition of sub-monolayer amounts. Our approach overcomes serious shortcomings in previous in-situ implementations of CCS based on sputtering or PLD, in particular the variations of thickness across the compositional spread and the differing deposition energetics as function of position. While moving-shutter techniques are appropriate for PLD-approaches yielding complete spreads on small substrates (i.e. small as compared to distances over which the deposition parameters in PLD vary, typically about 1 cm), our method can be used to fabricate samples that are large enough for individual compositions to be analyzed by conventional techniques, including temperature-dependent measurements of resistivity and dielectric and magnetic and properties (i.e. SQUID magnetometry). Initial results are shown for spreads of (Sr,Ca)RuO$_3$.

Disorder induced collapse of the electron phonon coupling in MgB$_{2}$ observed by Raman Spectroscopy

The Raman spectrum of the superconductor MgB$_{2}$ has been measured as a function of the Tc of the film. A striking correlation is observed between the $T_{c}$ onset and the frequency of the $E_{2g}$ mode. Analysis of the data with the McMillan formula provides clear experimental evidence for the collapse of the electron phonon coupling at the temperature predicted for the convergence of two superconducting gaps into one observable gap. This gives indirect evidence of the convergence of the two gaps and direct evidence of a transition to an isotropic state at 19 K. The value of the electron phonon coupling constant is found to be 1.22 for films with T$_{c}$ 39K and 0.80 for films with T$_{c}\leq$19K.

Effects of Ion Milling on the Microwave Properties of MgB2 Films

The new superconductor MgB2 may prove useful for microwave applications at intermediate temperatures. MgB2 films with the thickness of 300 - 400 nm have surface resistance Rs less than 0.01 mOhms at a frequency (f) of 8.5 GHz and 7 K,and ~ 1.5 mOhms at 87 GHz and 4.2 K. The critical temperature (Tc) of these films is ~ 39 K when they are prepared under optimum conditions. The Rs appears to scale as f^2 up to 30 K. After surface ion-milling, a reduction of the Tc and an enhanced resistivity rho(Tc) are observed consistently at 8.5 GHz and 87 GHz along with a reduced Rs at low temperatures. The observed rho(Tc) - Tc relation and the uncorrelated behavior between rho(Tc) and Rs values measured at low temperatures are well explained in terms of the two-gap model, with the observed rho(Tc) - Tc relation attributed to the properties of the large gap, and the Rs at lower temperatures reflecting the properties of the small gap, with an enhanced small gap energy due to increased interband scattering. This study suggests that the interband scattering should be enhanced to improve the low temperature microwave properties of MgB2 films and that the ion-milling process must be performed with great care to preserve the high quality of MgB2 films.

Recent developments in the characterization of superconducting films by microwaves

We describe and analyze selected surface impedance data recently obtained by different groups on cuprate, ruthenate and diboride superconducting films on metallic and dielectric substrates for fundamental studies and microwave applications. The discussion includes a first review of microwave data on MgB2, the weak-link behaviour of RABiTS-type YBa2Cu3O7-d tapes, and the observation of a strong anomalous power-dependence of the microwave losses in MgO at low temperatures. We demonstrate how microwave measurements can be used to investigate electronic, magnetic, and dielectric dissipation and relaxation in the films and substrates. The impact of such studies reaches from the extraction of microscopic information to the engineering of materials and further on to applications in power systems and communication technology.

Significant Reduction of the Microwave Surface Resistance of MgB2 Films by Surface Ion Milling

The microwave surface resistance Rs of MgB2 films with the zero-resistance temperature of - 39 K was measured at 8.0 - 8.5 GHz. The MgB2 films were prepared by deposition of boron films on c-cut sapphire, followed by annealing in a vaporized magnesium environment. The Rs appeared significantly reduced by ion milling of the as-grown MgB2 film surface, with the observed Rs of ~ 0.8 mohm at 24 K for an ion-milled MgB2 film as small as 1/15 of the value for the corresponding as-grown MgB2 film. The reduced Rs of the ion-milled MgB2 films is attributed to the effects of the Mg-rich metallic layer existing at the surfaces of the as-grown MgB2 films.

Planar Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor Josephson Junctions in MgB2

Since the discovery of superconductivity in MgB2 considerable progress has been made in determining the physical properties of the material, which are promising for bulk conductors. Tunneling studies show that the material is reasonably isotropic and has a well-developed s-wave energy gap (∆), implying that electronic devices based on MgB2 could operate close to 30K. Although a number of groups have reported the formation of thin films by post-reaction of precursors, heterostructure growth is likely to require considerable technological development, making single-layer device structures of most immediate interest. MgB2 is unlike the cuprate superconductors in that grain boundaries do not form good Josephson junctions, and although a SQUID based on MgB2 nanobridges has been fabricated, the nanobridges themselves do not show junction-like properties. Here we report the successful creation of planar MgB2 junctions by localised ion damage in thin films. The critical current (IC) of these devices is strongly modulated by applied microwave radiation and magnetic field. The product of the critical current and normal state resistance (ICRN) is remarkably high, implying a potential for very high frequency applications.

High critical current densities in superconducting MgB2 thin films

Superconducting MgB2 thin films were prepared on Al2O3(0001) and MgO(100) substrates. Boron thin films were deposited by the electron-beam evaporation followed by post-annealing process with magnesium. Proper post annealing conditions were investigated to grow good superconducting MgB2 thin films. The X-ray diffraction patterns showed randomly orientated growth of MgB2 phase in our thin films. The surface morphology was examined by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and atomic force microscope (AFM). Critical current density (Jc) measured by transport method was about 10^7 A/cm^2 at 15 K, and superconducting transition temperature (Tc) was ~ 39 K in the MgB2 thin films on Al2O3.
