Total and Parity-Projected Level Densities of Iron-Region Nuclei in the Auxiliary Fields Monte Carlo Shell Model

We use the auxiliary-fields Monte Carlo method for the shell model in the complete $(pf+0g_{9/2})$-shell to calculate level densities. We introduce parity projection techniques which enable us to calculate the parity dependence of the level density. Results are presented for $^{56}$Fe, where the calculated total level density is found to be in remarkable agreement with the experimental level density. The parity-projected densities are well described by a backshifted Bethe formula, but with significant dependence of the single-particle level-density and backshift parameters on parity. We compare our exact results with those of the thermal Hartree-Fock approximation.

Microscopic analysis of quadrupole collective motion in Cr--Fe nuclei: II. Doorway nature of mixed-symmetry states

The mixed-symmetry collective modes are investigated in Cr-Fe nuclei, by analyzing the realistic shell-model wavefunctions via the H^n-cooling method. It is clarified that the relatively low-lying mixed-symmetry states behave like doorway states. For these nearly spherical nuclei, the lowest mixed-symmetry state is shown to have $J^P=2^+$. An indication of the mixed-symmetry 3^+ state is obtained. The sequence of the mixed-symmetry 2^+, 1^+ and 3^+ levels and its nucleus-dependence are discussed. Calculated M1 and M3 transitions in the low-energy region suggest that the mixed-symmetry 1^+ and 3^+ components are detectable. We investigate the B(M1) distribution in a wider energy range, without breaking the isospin quantum number. It is confirmed that the mixed-symmetry 1^+ component is well separated from the peak of the spin excitation. The isospin-raising component has a peak, separated well from the isospin-conserving one. The orbital angular-momentum contributes destructively to the spin excitations.

Microscopic analysis of quadrupole collective motion in Cr-Fe nuclei: I. Renormalization of collective states and interacting-boson-model parameters

We present a new method by which wavefunctions with simple structure are renormalized so as to contain more complicated structure. This method, called $H^n$-cooling method, is applied to the study of the quadrupole collective motion of $^{56}$Fe, $^{54}$Cr, $^{58}$Fe and $^{56}$Cr. The shell-model wavefunctions of lowest-lying states of these nuclei are well treated by this method. By using the wavefunctions obtained via the $H^n$-cooling method, IBM-2 parameters are derived from a realistic shell-model hamiltonian and transition operators. The Majorana interaction becomes sizably repulsive, primarily as an effect of the renormalization. The bosonic E2 effective-charges are enhanced due to the renormalization, while a quenching occurs in the M1 and M3 parameters for proton bosons. It is shown that the $χ$ parameters take similar values in the hamiltonian and in the E2 operator.

Realistic shell model calculation of $2νββ$ nuclear matrix elements and role of shell structure in intermediate states

We discuss two conditions needed for correct computation of $2νββ$ nuclear matrix-elements within the realistic shell-model framework. An algorithm in which intermediate states are treated based on Whitehead's moment method is inspected, by taking examples of the double GT$^+$ transitions $\mbox{$^{36}$Ar}\rightarrow\mbox{$^{36}$S}$, $\mbox{$^{54}$Fe}\rightarrow\mbox{$^{54}$Cr}$ and $\mbox{$^{58}$Ni} \rightarrow\mbox{$^{58}$Fe}$. This algorithm yields rapid convergence on the $2νββ$ matrix-elements, even when neither relevant GT$^+$ nor GT$^-$ strength distribution is convergent. A significant role of the shell structure is pointed out, which makes the $2νββ$ matrix-elements highly dominated by the low-lying intermediate states. Experimental information of the low-lying GT$^\pm$ strengths is strongly desired. Half-lives of $T^{2ν}_{1/2}({\rm EC}/{\rm EC}; \mbox{$^{36}$Ar}\rightarrow\mbox{$^{36}$S})=1.7\times 10^{29}\mbox{yr}$, $T^{2ν}_{1/2}({\rm EC}/{\rm EC};\mbox{$^{54}$Fe}\rightarrow \mbox{$^{54}$Cr})=1.5\times 10^{27}\mbox{yr}$,$T^{2ν}_{1/2}({\rm EC} /{\rm EC};\mbox{$^{58}$Ni}\rightarrow\mbox{$^{58}$Fe})=6.1\times 10^{24}\mbox{yr}$and $T^{2ν}_{1/2}(β^+/{\rm EC};\mbox{$^{58}$Ni} \rightarrow\mbox{$^{58}$Fe})=8.6\times 10^{25}\mbox{yr}$ are obtained from the present realistic shell-model calculation of the nuclear matrix-elements.

Microscopic description of Gamow-Teller transitions in middle pf--shell nuclei by a realistic shell model calculation

GT transitions in $N=28\sim 30$ nuclei are studied in terms of a large-scale realistic shell-model calculation, by using Towner's microscopic parameters. $B({\rm GT})$ values to low-lying final states are reproduced with a reasonable accuracy. Several gross properties with respect to the GT transitions are investigated with this set of the wavefunctions and the operator. While the calculated total GT$^-$ strengths show no apparent disagreement with the measured ones, the calculated total GT$^+$ strengths are somewhat larger than those obtained from charge-exchange experiments. Concerning the Ikeda sum-rule, the proportionality of $S_{\rm GT}$ to $(N-Z)$ persists to an excellent approximation, with a quenching factor of 0.68. For the relative GT$^-$ strengths among possible isospin components, the lowest isospin component gathers greater fraction than expected by the squared CG coefficients of the isospin coupling. It turns out that these relative strengths are insensitive to the size of model space. Systematics of the summed $B({\rm GT})$ values are discussed for each isospin component.
