A theoretical analysis of flux-qubit measurements with a dc-SQUID

The readout process of a superconducting flux-qubit is theoretically analyzed in terms of the quantum dynamics of a qubit-SQUID coupled system during measurement. The quantity directly observed by the measurement is the switching current (Isw) of the dc-SQUID placed around the qubit ring. In order to clarify the relation between the Isw and the qubit state, we calculated the time evolution of the density operator of the qubit-SQUID system while increasing the SQUID bias current until switching events occur and obtained the switching current distributions. This clarifies what information of the qubit is obtained by a dc-SQUID switching current measurement under specific conditions, for example, when the qubit eigenstate is a superposition of two different flux states.

Multiphoton transitions in a macroscopic quantum two-state system

We have observed multiphoton transitions between two macroscopic quantum-mechanical superposition states formed by two opposite circulating currents in a superconducting loop with three Josephson junctions. Resonant peaks and dips of up to three-photon transitions were observed in spectroscopic measurements when the system was irradiated with a strong RF-photon field. The widths of the multiphoton absorption dips are shown to scale with the Bessel functions in agreement with theoretical predictions derived from the Bloch equation or from a spin-boson model.

Experimental Verification of the Gapless Point in the $S$=1 Antiferromagnetic Bond Alternating Chain

Susceptibility and high field magnetization measurements have been performed on powder samples of an $S$=1 bond alternating chain compound [\{Ni(333-tet)($μ$-N$_3$)\}$_n$](ClO$_4$)$_n$ (333-tet=tetraamine N,N'-bis(3-aminopropyl)-1,3-propanediamine). As the temperature is decreased, the susceptibility exhibits a round maximum at around 120 K and decreases gradually down to 10 K, and then falls down rapidly with a logarithmic curvature which is behavior of the susceptibility of a gapless or a nearly gapless antiferromagnetic chain. Magnetization up to 50 T at 1.4 K shows no or a very small gap in this compound. We have carried out numerical calculations for the $S$=1 antiferromagnetic bond alternating chain with various alternating ratios $α$ and obtained a very good agreement between experiments and calculations for $α$=0.6. We verify experimentally that the gapless point exists around $α$=0.6.

Nontriviality of Gauge-Higgs-Yukawa System and Renormalizability of Gauged NJL Model

In the leading order of a modified 1/Nc expansion, we show that a class of gauge-Higgs-Yukawa systems in four dimensions give non-trivial and well-defined theories in the continuum limit. The renormalized Yukawa coupling y and the quartic scalar coupling λhave to lie on a certain line in the (y,λ) plane and the line terminates at an upper bound. The gauged Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model in the limit of its ultraviolet cutoff going to infinity, is shown to become equivalent to the gauge-Higgs-Yukawa system with the coupling constants just on that terminating point. This proves the renormalizability of the gauged NJL model in four dimensions. The effective potential for the gauged NJL model is calculated by using renormalization group technique and confirmed to be consistent with the previous result by Kondo, Tanabashi and Yamawaki obtained by the ladder Schwinger-Dyson equation.
