Absolute measurement of the 5/2+ resonance of 36Ar(p,gamma)37K at E_p = 918 keV

The strength of the 5/2+ resonance of the reaction 36Ar(p,gamma)37K at E_p = 918 keV was measured absolutely: omega gamma = (258 \pm 24) meV. The new result is consistent with previous results. This resonance was used in several experiments as a calibration standard. Therefore we discuss our experimental uncertainties in detail which is important for the reliability of previous experiments and our new result.

Solar neutrino processes in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron

The generalized version of the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron (RFMD) is applied to the description of processes of astrophysical interest and low-energy elastic NN scattering. The value of the astrophysical factor S_{pp}(0) = 5.52x10^{-25} MeV b is found to be enhanced by a factor of 1.42 with respect to the classical value S^*_{pp}(0) = 3.89x10{-25} MeV b obtained by Kamionkowski and Bahcall in the potential model approach (PMA). The astrophysical aspects of this enhancement are discussed. The cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron by (anti-) neutrinos nu_e + D -> e^- + p + p, anti-nu_e + D -> e^+ + n + n and nu_e(anti-nu_e) + D -> nu_e(anti-nu_e) + n + p are calculated for the energies of (anti-) neutrinos ranging from thresholds up to 10 MeV. The results are discussed in comparison with the PMA data. The cross sections for anti-nu_e + D -> e^+ + n + n and anti-nu_e + D -> anti-nu_e + n + p averaged over the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum agree well with experimental data. The astrophysical factor S_{pep}(0) for the process p + e^- + p -> nu_e + D (or pep-process) is calculated relative to S_{pp}(0) in complete agreement with the result obtained by Bahcall and May. The reaction rate for the neutron-proton radiative capture is calculated in agreement with the PMA result obtained for pure M1 transition. It is shown that in the RFMD one can describe low--energy elastic NN scattering in complete agreement with low-energy nuclear phenomenology.

Solar proton burning, photon and anti-neutrino disintegration of the deuteron in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron

The relativistic field theory model of the deuteron (RFMD) is applied to the calculation of the astrophysical factor S_{pp}(0) for the process of the solar proton burning p + p -> D + e^+ + ν_e and the cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron by photons gamma + D -> n + p and anti-neutrinos \barν_e + D -> e^+ + n + n. Our theoretical value of the astrophysical factor S_{pp}(0) = 4.02 x 10^{-25} MeV b agrees with the classical result obtained by Bahcall and Kamionkowski S_{pp}(0) = 3.89 x 10^{-25} MeV b in the potential model approach (PMA). The cross sections for the disintegration of the deuteron by photons and anti-neutrinos calculated near thresholds are in good agreement with the PMA. An extrapolation of the cross sections for energies far from thresholds is suggested and related to the inclusion of form factors describing spatial smearing of the deuteron and the NN system. The extrapolated cross section for the disintegration of the deuteron by anti-neutrinos agrees with that calculated in the PMA in the anti-neutrino energy region from threshold up to 10 MeV. The extrapolated cross section averaged over the reactor anti-neutrino energy spectrum is obtained in agreement with the experimental data. It is shown that the RFMD enables to describe elastic low-energy NN scattering in accordance with low-energy nuclear phenomenology.

Thermonuclear Reaction Rate of 23Mg(p,gamma)24$Al

Updated stellar rates for the reaction 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al are calculated by using all available experimental information on 24Al excitation energies. Proton and gamma-ray partial widths for astrophysically important resonances are derived from shell model calculations. Correspondences of experimentally observed 24Al levels with shell model states are based on application of the isobaric multiplet mass equation. Our new rates suggest that the 23Mg(p,gamma)24Al reaction influences the nucleosynthesis in the mass A>20 region during thermonuclear runaways on massive white dwarfs.

Neutron capture of 26Mg at thermonuclear energies

The neutron capture cross section of 26Mg was measured relative to the known gold cross section at thermonuclear energies using the fast cyclic activation technique. The experiment was performed at the 3.75 MV Van-de-Graaff accelerator, Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe. The experimental capture cross section is the sum of resonant and direct contributions. For the resonance at E(n,lab) = 220 keV our new results are in disagreement with the data from Weigmann et al. An improved Maxwellian averaged capture cross section is derived from the new experimental data taking into account s- and p-wave capture and resonant contributions. The properties of so-called potential resonances which influence the p-wave neutron capture of 26}Mg are discussed in detail.

Low-energy photodisintegration of 9Be and alpha + alpha + n <-> 9Be + gamma reactions at astrophysical conditions

A semi-microscopic model for the low-energy photodisintegration of the 9Be nucleus is constructed, and the experimental data are analyzed with its help. The older radioactive isotope data are supported by this analysis. The theoretical photodisintegration cross section is derived. The astrophysical rates for the reaction alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma and the reverse photodisintegration of 9Be are calculated. The new reaction rate for alpha + alpha + n -> 9Be + gamma is compared with previous estimations.

Dependence of direct neutron capture on nuclear-structure models

The prediction of cross sections for nuclei far off stability is crucial in the field of nuclear astrophysics. We calculate direct neutron capture on the even-even isotopes $^{124-145}$Sn and $^{208-238}$Pb with energy levels, masses, and nuclear density distributions taken from different nuclear-structure models. The utilized structure models are a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model, a relativistic mean field theory, and a macroscopic-microscopic model based on the finite-range droplet model and a folded-Yukawa single-particle potential. Due to the differences in the resulting neutron separation and level energies, the investigated models yield capture cross sections sometimes differing by orders of magnitude. This may also lead to differences in the predicted astrophysical r-process paths. Astrophysical implications are discussed.

Analysis of the thermal cross section of the capture reaction 13C(n,gamma)14C

We investigate the thermal cross section of the reaction 13C(n,gamma)14}C which takes place in the helium burning zones of red giant star as well as in the nucleosynthesis of Inhomogeneous Big Bang models. We find that we can reproduce the experimentally known thermal capture cross section only if we take into account a strong hindrance of the E1 transition in the nuclear interior. This effect can be explained by the strong coupling to the giant dipole resonance.

On the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron II

The relativistic field theory model of the deuteron is applied to the calculation of the cross sections of the low-energy radiative neutron-proton capture n + p -> D + gamma and the low-energy two-proton fusion p + p -> D + e^+ + nu_e. For the low-energy radiative neutron-proton capture n + p -> D + gamma our result agrees well with both the experimental data and the potential model prediction. In the case of the two-proton fusion the cross section obtained is 2.9 times as much as that given by the potential approach. The obtained result is discussed in connection with the solar neutrino problem. ERRATUM: We correct the value of the cross section for pp-fusion p + p -> D + e^+ + nu_e. We find a contribution to the astrophysical factor δS_pp(0) = 2.01 x 10^{-25} (1 +/- 0.30) MeV b which is obtained only due to weak and strong low-energy interactions of the protons and the deuteron when neglecting the Coulomb repulsion between protons in the intermediate state. Minor misprints are corrected.

Measurement and analysis of neutron capture reaction rates of light neutron-rich nuclei

Several neutron capture cross sections of light neutron-rich nuclei were measured in the astrophysically relevant energy region of 5 to 200 keV. The experimental data are compared to calculations using the direct capture model. The results are used for the calculation of neutron capture cross sections of unstable isotopes. Furthermore, neutron sources with energies below E_n \approx 10 keV are discussed.

Direct neutron capture of 48Ca at kT = 52 keV

The neutron capture cross section of 48Ca was measured relative to the known gold cross section at kT = 52 keV using the fast cyclic activation technique. The experiment was performed at the Van-de-Graaff accelerator, Universitaet Tuebingen. The new experimental result is in good agreement with a calculation using the direct capture model. The 1/v behaviour of the capture cross section at thermonuclear energies is confirmed, and the adopted reaction rate which is based on several previous experimental investigations remains unchanged.

Nuclear aspects of the solar neutrino problem

The present status of the nuclear reaction rates determining the solar neutrino flux is discussed. This includes the reaction rates for the two branching ratios of the three pp-chains involving the reactions 3He(3He,2p)4He and 3He(4He,gamma)7Be for the first branching, and 7Be(e-,nu_e)7Li and 7Be(p,gamma)7B for the second branching. Mainly we will concentrate on the basic nuclear reaction p + p -> D + e+ + nu_e of the pp-chains. We use a relativistic field theory model of the deuteron to calculate the low-energy cross section for this reaction. The theoretical prediction of the cross section obtained is about 2.9 times largerthan given in the conventional potential approach. The consequences of this new reaction rate for the solar neutrino problem will be presented and discussed.

On the solar neutrino problem in the relativistic field theory model of the deuteron

The relativistic field theory model of the deuteron suggested by us previously is applied to the calculation of the reaction rate of the low-energy two-proton fusion p + p -> D + e+ + nu. The theoretical prediction of the reaction rate obtained is 2.9 times larger than given by the potential approach. This leads to a strong suppression of the high energy solar neutrino fluxes.

Three-alpha structures in C-12

We search for three-alpha resonances in C-12 by using the complex scaling method in a microscopic cluster model. All experimentally known low-lying natural-parity states are localized. For the first time we unambiguously show that the 0+_2 state in C-12, which plays an important role in stellar nucleosynthesis, is a genuine three-alpha resonance.

Spectroscopic factors for bound s-wave states derived from neutron scattering lengths

A simple and model-independent method is described to derive neutron single-particle spectroscopic factors of bound s-wave states in $^{A+1}Z = ^{A}Z \otimes n$ nuclei from neutron scattering lengths. Spectroscopic factors for the nuclei ^{13}C, ^{14}C, ^{16}N, ^{17}O, ^{19}O, ^{23}Ne, ^{37}Ar, and ^{41}Ar are compared to results derived from transfer experiments using the well-known DWBA analysis and to shell model calculations. The scattering length of ^{14}C is calculated from the ^{15}C_{g.s.} spectroscopic factor.
