Statistical Model Description of $K^+$ and $K^-$ Production between 1 - 10 AGeV

The excitation functions of $K^+$ and $K^-$ mesons in heavy ion collisions are studied within a statistical model assuming chemical and thermal equilibrium with exact strangeness conservation. At low incident energies the associate production of kaons, i.e. the production of a K+ together with a hyperon and the production of a K- together with a K+, implies specific features: different threshold energies and different dependences of K+ and K- yields on baryon number density. It is shown that the experimentally observed equality of the $K^+$ and $K^-$ rates at energies $\sqrt{s} - \sqrt{s_{th}} \leq 0$ is due to a crossing of the two excitation functions. Furthermore, the independence of the $K^+$ to $K^-$ ratio on the number of participating nucleons observed at 1 and 10 $A\cdot$GeV is consistent with this model.

A Measurement of the Coulomb Dissociation of 8B at 254 MeV/nucleon and the 8B Solar Neutrino Flux

We have measured the Coulomb dissociation of 8B into 7Be and proton at 254 MeV/nucleon using a large-acceptance focusing spectrometer. The astrophysical S17 factor for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction at E{c.m.} = 0.25-2.78 MeV is deduced yielding S17(0)=20.6 \pm 1.2 (exp.) \pm 1.0 (theo.) eV-b. This result agrees with the presently adopted zero-energy S17 factor obtained in direct-reaction measurements and with the results of other Coulomb-dissociation studies performed at 46.5 and 51.2 MeV/nucleon.

Is binary sequential decay compatible with the fragmentation of nuclei at high energy?

We use a binary sequential decay model in order to describe the fragmentation of a nucleus induced by the high energy collisions of protons with Au nuclei. Overall agreement between measured and calculated physical observables is obtained. We evaluate and analyse the decay times obtained with two different parametrisations of the decay rates and discuss the applicability of the model to high energy fragmentation.

Medium Effects in Kaon and Antikaon Production in Nuclear Collisions at Subthreshold Beam Energies

Production cross sections of K$^+$ and K$^-$ mesons have been measured in C+C collisions at beam energies per nucleon below and near the nucleon-nucleon threshold. At a given beam energy, the spectral slopes of the K$^-$ mesons are significantly steeper than the ones of the K$^+$ mesons. The excitation functions for K$^+$ and K$^-$ mesons nearly coincide when correcting for the threshold energy. In contrast, the K$^+$ yield exceeds the K$^-$ yield by a factor of about 100 in proton-proton collisions at beam energies near the respective nucleon-nucleon thresholds.

Particle ratios at SPS, AGS and SIS

Ratios of integrated particle yields provide the best method for determining the temperature and the chemical potential. The chemical freeze-out parameters obtained at CERN/SPS, BNL/AGS and GSI/SIS energies all correspond to a unique value of 1 GeV per hadron in the local rest frame of the system, independent of the beam energy and of the target and beam particles.

Influence of Impact Parameter on Thermal Description of Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions at GSI/SIS

Attention is drawn to the role played by the size of the system in the thermodynamic analysis of particle yields in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SIS energies. This manifests itself in the non-linear dependence of K+ and K- yields in $AA$ collisions at 1 -- 2 A.GeV on the number of participants. It is shown that this dependence can be quantitatively well described in terms of a thermal model with a canonical strangeness conservation. The measured particle multiplicity ratios (pi+/p, pi-/pi+, d/p, K+/pi+ and K+/K- but not eta/pi0) in central Au-Au and Ni-Ni collisions at 0.8 -- 2.0 A.GeV are also explained in the context of a thermal model with a common freeze-out temperature and chemical potential. Including the concept of collective flow a consistent picture of particle energy distributions is derived with the flow velocity being strongly impact-parameter dependent.

Enhanced Out-of-plane Emission of K+ Mesons observed in Au+Au Collisions at 1 AGeV

The azimuthal angular distribution of K+ mesons has been measured in Au + Au collisions at 1 AGeV. In peripheral and semi-central collisions, K+ mesons preferentially are emitted perpendicular to the reaction plane. The strength of the azimuthal anisotropy of K+ emission is comparable to the one of pions. No in-plane flow was found for K+ mesons near projectile and target rapidity.

Evidence for Different Freeze-Out Radii of High- and Low-Energy Pions Emitted in Au+Au Collisions at 1 GeV/nucleon

Double differential production cross sections of negative and positive pions and the number of participating protons have been measured in central Au+Au collisions at 1 GeV per nucleon incident energy. At low pion energies the pi^- yield is strongly enhanced over the pi^+ yield. The energy dependence of the pi^-/pi^+ ratio is assigned to the Coulomb interaction of the charged pions with the protons in the reaction zone. The deduced Coulomb potential increases with increasing pion c.m. energy. This behavior indicates different freeze-out radii for different pion energies in the c.m.~frame.
