Dynamical properties of ultracold bosons in an optical lattice

We study the excitation spectrum of strongly correlated lattice bosons for the Mott-insulating phase and for the superfluid phase close to localization. Within a Schwinger-boson mean-field approach we find two gapped modes in the Mott insulator and the combination of a sound mode (Goldstone) and a gapped (Higgs) mode in the superfluid. To make our findings comparable with experimental results, we calculate the dynamic structure factor as well as the linear response to the optical lattice modulation introduced by Stoeferle et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 130403 (2004)]. We find that the puzzling finite frequency absorption observed in the superfluid phase could be explained via the excitation of the gapped (Higgs) mode. We check the consistency of our results with an adapted f-sum-rule and propose an extension of the experimental technique by Stoeferle et al. to further verify our findings.

Repulsively bound atom pairs: Overview, Simulations and Links

We review the basic physics of repulsively bound atom pairs in an optical lattice, which were recently observed in the laboratory, including the theory and the experimental implementation. We also briefly discuss related many-body numerical simulations, in which time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG) methods are used to model the many-body physics of a collection of interacting pairs, and give a comparison of the single-particle quasimomentum distribution measured in the experiment and results from these simulations. We then give a short discussion of how these repulsively bound pairs relate to bound states in some other physical systems.

Strongly correlated 2D quantum phases with cold polar molecules: controlling the shape of the interaction potential

We discuss techniques to tune and shape the long-range part of the interaction potentials in quantum gases of polar molecules by dressing rotational excitations with static and microwave fields. This provides a novel tool towards engineering strongly correlated quantum phases in combination with low dimensional trapping geometries. As an illustration, we discuss a 2D crystalline phase, and a superfluid-crystal quantum phase transition.

Atomic quantum simulator for lattice gauge theories and ring exchange models

We present the design of a ring exchange interaction in cold atomic gases subjected to an optical lattice using well understood tools for manipulating and controlling such gases. The strength of this interaction can be tuned independently and describes the correlated hopping of two bosons. We discuss a setup where this coupling term may allows for the realization and observation of exotic quantum phases, including a deconfined insulator described by the Coulomb phase of a three-dimensional U(1) lattice gauge theory.

Spectroscopy of Superfluid Pairing in Atomic Fermi Gases

We study the dynamic structure factor for density and spin within the crossover from BCS superfluidity of atomic fermions to the Bose-Einstein condensation of molecules. Both structure factors are experimentally accessible via Bragg spectroscopy, and allow for the identification of the pairing mechanism: the spin structure factor allows for the determination of the two particle gap, while the collective sound mode in the density structure reveals the superfluid state.

Phase separation of atomic Bose-Fermi mixtures in an optical lattice

We study a two-dimensional atomic mixture of bosons and fermions cooled into their quantum degenerate states and subject to an optical lattice. The optical lattice provides van Hove singularities in the fermionic density of states. We find that these van Hove singularities produce new and interesting features for the transition towards phase separation: an arbitrary weak interaction between the bosons and the fermions is sufficient to drive the phase separation at low temperatures. The phase separated state turns stable for attractive and repulsive interaction between the bosons and fermions and can be cast into the standard form of a `liquid--gas' transition.

Quantum fluctuations in thin superconducting wires of finite length

In one dimensional wires, fluctuations destroy superconducting long-range order and stiffness at finite temperatures; in an infinite wire, quasi-long range order and stiffness survive at zero temperature if the wire's dimensionless admittance $μ$ is large, $μ> 2$. We analyze the disappearance of this superconductor-insulator quantum phase transition in a finite wire and its resurrection due to the wire's coupling to its environment characterized through the dimensionless conductance $K$. Integrating over phase slips, we determine the flow of couplings and establish the $μ$--$K$ phase diagram.

Supersolid versus Phase Separation in Atomic Bose-Fermi Mixture

We show that a two-dimensional atomic mixture of Bosons and Fermions cooled into their quantum degenerate states and subject to an optical lattice develops a supersolid phase characterized by the simultaneous presence of a non-trivial crystalline order and phase order. This transition is in competition with a phase separated ground state. We determine the phase diagram of the system and propose an experiment allowing for the observation of the supersolid phase.

Commensurate-incommensurate transition of cold atoms in an optical lattice

An atomic gas subject to a commensurate periodic potential generated by an optical lattice undergoes a superfluid--Mott insulator transition. Confining a strongly interacting gas to one dimension generates an instability where an arbitrary weak potential is sufficient to pin the atoms into the Mott state; here, we derive the corresponding phase diagram. The commensurate pinned state may be detected via its finite excitation gap and the Bragg peaks in the static structure factor.

Superfluidity versus Bloch oscillations in confined atomic gases

We study the superfluid properties of (quasi) one-dimensional bosonic atom gases/liquids in traps with finite geometries in the presence of strong quantum fluctuations. Driving the condensate with a moving defect we find the nucleation rate for phase slips using instanton techniques. While phase slips are quenched in a ring resulting in a superfluid response, they proliferate in a tube geometry where we find Bloch oscillations in the chemical potential. These Bloch oscillations describe the individual tunneling of atoms through the defect and thus are a consequence of particle quantization.

Transport in a One-Dimensional Superfluid: Quantum Nucleation of Phase Slips

We present an analytical derivation for the quantum decay rate of the superflow through a weak link in a one-dimensional Bose-Einstein-condensate. The effective action for the phase difference across the link reduces to that of a massive particle with damping subject to a periodic potential. We find an algebraic flow-pressure relation, characteristic for quantum nucleation of phase slips in the link and show how short-wave length fluctuations renormalizing the interaction between the Bosons remove the quantum phase transition expected in this class of systems.

Casimir Force between Vortex Matter in Anisotropic and Layered Superconductors

We present a new approach to calculate the attractive long range vortex-vortex interaction of the van der Waals type present in anisotropic and layered superconductors. The mapping of the statistical mechanics of vortex lines onto the imaginary time quantum mechanics of two dimensional charged bosons allows us to define a 2D Casimir problem: Two half-spaces of (dilute) vortex matter separated by a gap of width R are mapped to two dielectric half-planes of charged bosons interacting via a massive gauge field. We determine the attractive Casimir force between the two half-planes and show, that it agrees with the pairwise summation of the van der Waals force between vortices previously found by Blatter and Geshkenbein [Phys. Rev. Lett. 77, 4958 (1996)]
