Rio: A new computational framework for accurate initial data of binary black holes

We present a computational framework (Rio) in the ADM 3+1 approach for numerical relativity. This work enables us to carry out high resolution calculations for initial data of two arbitrary black holes. We use the transverse conformal treatment, the Bowen-York and the puncture methods. For the numerical solution of the Hamiltonian constraint we use the domain decomposition and the spectral decomposition of Galerkin-Collocation. The nonlinear numerical code solves the set of equations for the spectral modes using the standard Newton-Raphson method, LU decomposition and Gaussian quadratures. We show the convergence of the Rio code. This code allows for easy deployment of large calculations. We show how the spin of one of the black holes is manifest in the conformal factor.

Galerkin-Collocation domain decomposition method for arbitrary binary black holes

We present a new computational framework for the Galerkin-collocation method for double domain in the context of ADM 3+1 approach in numerical relativity. This work enables us to perform high resolution calculations for initial sets of two arbitrary black holes. We use the Bowen-York method for binary systems and the puncture method to solve the Hamiltonian constraint. The nonlinear numerical code solves the set of equations for the spectral modes using the standard Newton-Raphson method, LU decomposition and Gaussian quadratures. We show convergence of our code for the conformal factor and the ADM mass. Thus, we display features of the conformal factor for different masses, spins and linear momenta.

Fixed mesh refinement in the characteristic formulation of General Relativity

We implement a spatially fixed mesh refinement under spherical symmetry for the characteristic formulation of General Relativity. The Courant-Friedrich-Levy (CFL) condition lets us deploy an adaptive resolution in (retarded-like) time, even for the nonlinear regime. As test cases, we replicate the main features of the gravitational critical behavior and the spacetime structure at null infinity using the Bondi mass and the News function. Additionally, we obtain the global energy conservation for an extreme situation, i.e. in the threshold of the black hole formation. In principle, the calibrated code can be used in conjunction with an ADM 3+1 code to confirm the critical behavior recently reported in the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in an asymptotic anti-de Sitter spacetime. For the scenarios studied, the fixed mesh refinement offers improved runtime and results comparable to code without mesh refinement.

Nonlinear interaction between electromagnetic and gravitational waves: an appraisal

Wave propagation of field disturbances is ubiquitous. The electromagnetic and gravitational are cousin theories in which the corresponding waves play a relevant role to understand several related physical. It has been established that small electromagnetic waves can generate gravitational waves and vice versa when scattered by a charged black hole. In the realm of cylindrical spacetimes, we present here a simple nonlinear effect of the conversion of electromagnetic to gravitational waves reflected by the amount of mass extracted from them.

Puncture black hole initial data: a single domain Galerkin-Collocation method for trumpet and wormhole data sets

We present a single domain Galerkin-Collocation method to calculate puncture initial data sets for single and binary, either in the trumpet or wormhole geometries. The combination of aspects belonging to the Galerkin and the Collocation methods together with the adoption of spherical coordinates in all cases show to be very effective. We have proposed a unified expression for the conformal factor to describe trumpet and spinning black holes. In particular, for the spinning trumpet black holes, we have exhibited the deformation of the limit surface due to the spin from a sphere to an oblate spheroid. We have also revisited the energy content in the trumpet and wormhole puncture data sets. The algorithm can be extended to describe binary black holes.

A (gravitational) toy story

Frequently in Physics, insights and conclusions can be drawn from simple, idealized models. The discovery of critical behavior in the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field leads to the simulation of binary black holes, from its coalescence to merging and ringdown. We refined a toy model to explore black hole formation as these events unfold to revisit the instability of a gravitational kink. We confirmed a conjecture related to a mass gap, for critical behavior at the threshold of black hole formation. We find a critical exponent twice the standard value. Surprisingly, this larger critical exponent is also present in the multiple critical behavior for the black hole formation from a massless scalar field in asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes. What is the meaning of this mass gap? Does it have physical relevance?

Nonlinear evolution of cylindrical gravitational waves: numerical method and physical aspects

General cylindrical waves are the simplest axisymmetrical gravitational waves that contain both $+$ and $\times$ modes of polarization. In this paper, we have studied the evolution of general cylindrical gravitational waves in the realm of the characteristic scheme with a numerical code based on the Galerkin-Collocation method. The investigation consists of the numerical realization of concepts such as Bondi mass and the news functions adapted to cylindrical symmetry. The Bondi mass decays due to the presence of the news functions associated with both polarization modes. We have interpreted that each polarization mode as channels from which mass is extracted. Under this perspective, we have presented the enhancement effect of the polarization mode $+$ due to the nonlinear interaction with the mode $\times$. After discussing the role of matter in cylindrical symmetry, we have extended the numerical code to include electromagnetic fields.

A note about a new class of two-kinks

We present a model of two-kinks resulting from an explicit composition of two standards kinks of the $ϕ^4$ model based on the procedure of Ref. \cite{uchiyama}. The two-kinks have an additional parameter accounting for the separation of the standard kinks of $ϕ^4$ model. We have shown that the two-kinks have two discrete internal modes besides the zeroth mode and the continuous spectrum. This new feature signalizes that the head-on collision a two-kinks/two-antikinks pair exhibits a rich and complex behavior due to the additional channel from which the energy of the system can be stored. We have exhibited the fractal structure associated with the main configurations after the collision. We have inferred the fractality as the imprint of the nonlinear exchange of energy into the two discrete internal modes.

Three dimensional distorted black holes: using the Galerkin-Collocation method

We present an implementation of the Galerkin-Collocation method to determine the initial data for non-rotating distorted three dimensional black holes in the inversion and puncture schemes. The numerical method combines the key features of the Galerkin and Collocation methods which produces accurate initial data. We evaluated the ADM mass of the initial data sets, and we have provided the angular structure of the gravitational wave distribution at the initial hypersurface by evaluating the scalar $Ψ_4$ for asymptotic observers.

The collision of two-kinks defects

We have investigated the head-on collision of a two-kink and a two-antikink pair that arises as a generalization of the $ϕ^4$ model. We have evolved numerically the Klein-Gordon equation with a new spectral algorithm whose accuracy and convergence were attested by the numerical tests. As a general result, the two-kink pair is annihilated radiating away most of the scalar field. It is possible the production of oscillons-like configurations after the collision that bounce and coalesce to form a small amplitude oscillon at the origin. The new feature is the formation of a sequence of quasi-stationary structures that we have identified as lump-like solutions of non-topological nature. The amount of time these structures survives depends on the fine-tuning of the impact velocity.

Aspects of Wave Turbulence in Preheating

In this work we have studied the nonlinear preheating dynamics of the $\frac{1}{4} λϕ^4$ inflationary model. It is well established that after a linear stage of preheating characterized by the parametric resonance, the nonlinear dynamics becomes relevant driving the system towards turbulence. Wave turbulence is the appropriated description of this phase since matter distributions are fields instead of usual fluids. Therefore, turbulence develops due to the nonlinear interations of waves, here represented by the small inhomogeneities of the inflaton field. We present relevant aspects of wave turbulence such as the Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum in frequency and wave number domains that indicates that there are a transfer of energy through scales. From the power spectrum of the matter energy density we were able to estimate the temperature of the thermalized system.

A Kolmogorov-Zakharov Spectrum in $AdS$ Gravitational Collapse

We study black hole formation during the gravitational collapse of a massless scalar field in asymptotically $AdS_D$ spacetimes for $D=4,5$. We conclude that spherically symmetric gravitational collapse in asymptotically $AdS$ spaces is turbulent and characterized by a Kolmogorov-Zakharov spectrum. Namely, we find that after an initial period of weakly nonlinear evolution, there is a regime where the power spectrum of the Ricci scalar evolves as $ω^{-s}$ with the frequency, $ω$, and $s\approx 1.7\pm 0.1$.

Turbulence and Chaos in Anti-de-Sitter Gravity

Due to the AdS/CFT correspondence the question of instability of Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes sits in the intersection of mathematical and numerical relativity, string theory, field theory and condensed matter physics. In this essay we revisit that important question emphasizing the power of spectral methods and highlighting the effectiveness of standard techniques for studying nonlinear dynamical systems. In particular we display explicitly how the problem can be modeled as a system on nonlinearly coupled harmonic oscillators. We highlight some of the many open questions that stem from this result and point out that a full understanding will necessarily required the interdisciplinary cooperation of various communities.

Numerical Evolution of axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes: a code based on the Galerkin method

We present the first numerical code based on the Galerkin and Collocation methods to integrate the field equations of the Bondi problem. The Galerkin method like all spectral methods provide high accuracy with moderate computational effort. Several numerical tests were performed to verify the issues of convergence, stability and accuracy with promising results. This code opens up several possibilities of applications in more general scenarios for studying the evolution of spacetimes with gravitational waves.

Numerical evolution of general Robinson-Trautman spacetimes: code tests, wave forms and the efficiency of the gravitational wave extraction

We present an efficient numerical code based on spectral methods to integrate the field equations of general Robinson-Trautmann spacetimes. The most natural basis functions for the spectral expansion of the metric functions are spherical harmonics. Using the values of appropriate combinations of the metric functions at the collocation points, we have managed to reduce expression swell when the number of spherical harmonics increases. Our numerical code runs with relatively little computational resources and the code tests have shown excellent accuracy and convergence. The code has been applied to situations of physical interest in the context of Robsinson-Trautmann geometries such as: perturbation of the exterior gravitational field of a spheroid of matter; perturbation of an initially boosted black hole; and the non-frontal collision of two Schwarzschild black holes. In dealing with these processes we have derived analytical lower and upper bounds on the velocity of the resulting black hole and the efficiency of the gravitational wave extraction, respectively. Numerical experiments were performed to determine the forms of the gravitational waves and the efficiency in each situation of interest.

Compactlike kinks and vortices in generalized models

This work deals with the presence of topological defects in k-field models, where the dynamics is generalized to include higher order power in the kinetic term. We investigate kinks in (1,1) dimensions and vortices in (2,1) dimensions, focusing on some specific features of the solutions. In particular, we show how the kinks and vortices change to compactlike solutions, controlled by the parameter used to introduce the generalized models.

The dynamics of apparent horizons in Robinson-Trautman spacetimes

We present an alternative scheme of finding apparent horizons based on spectral methods applied to Robinson-Trautman spacetimes. We have considered distinct initial data such as representing the spheroids of matter and the head-on collision of two non-rotating black holes. The evolution of the apparent horizon is presented. We have obtained in some cases a mass gap between the final Bondi and apparent horizon masses, whose implications were briefly commented in the light of the thermodynamics of black holes.

The Efficiency of Gravitational Bremsstrahlung Production in the Collision of Two Schwarzschild Black Holes

We examine the efficiency of gravitational bremsstrahlung production in the process of head-on collision of two boosted Schwarzschild black holes. We constructed initial data for the characteristic initial value problem in Robinson-Trautman spacetimes, that represent two instantaneously stationary Schwarzschild black holes in motion towards each other with the same velocity. The Robinson-Trautman equation was integrated for these initial data using a numerical code based on the Galerkin method. The final resulting configuration is a boosted black hole with Bondi mass greater than the sum of the individual mass of each initial black hole. Two relevant aspects of the process are presented. The first relates the efficiency $Δ$ of the energy extraction by gravitational wave emission to the mass of the final black hole. This relation is fitted by a distribution function of non-extensive thermostatistics with entropic parameter $q \simeq 1/2$; the result extends and validates analysis based on the linearized theory of gravitational wave emission. The second is a typical bremsstrahlung angular pattern in the early period of emission at the wave zone, a consequence of the deceleration of the black holes as they coalesce; this pattern evolves to a quadrupole form for later times.
