Injection of magnetic helicity in solar cycle 24 and early phase of cycle 25

The injection of magnetic helicity into the heliosphere during solar cycle 24 and the early phase of cycle 25 has been calculated based on the analysis of a series of synoptic magnetic charts. During the cycle, the injected magnetic helicity is found to be mainly contributed by the magnetic field in active regions. According to Hale's law, the polarities of active regions statistically reverse between solar cycles 24 and 25. We suggest that the dominant source of injected magnetic helicity likely arises from the relatively strong magnetic fields of the leading polarity of active regions. This occurs as part of the magnetic field that migrates to high latitudes and the polar regions of the Sun due to the effect of meridional circulation inferred from a series of HMI/SDO magnetic synoptic charts. Significant fluctuations of the injected magnetic helicity from the subsurface layers may reflect the complex processes of how the twist from the convection zone ejects magnetic fields through a series of active regions on different temporal and spatial scales at the solar surface.

Proton-neutron pairing correlations in N=Z nuclei with Deformed Skyrme+pnBCS model

We investigate the effects of neutron-neutron (nn), proton-proton (pp) and proton-neutron (pn) pairing correlations on the ground-states of $N = Z$ even-even $pf$-shell nuclei by using an axially symmetric deformed Hartree-Fock (HF)+pnBardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) model. We adopt a Skyrme energy density functional (EDF) SGII, together with contact volume- and surface-type pairing interactions, whose strengths are adjusted to reproduce empirical pairing gaps of each nucleus. It is shown that the strength of the IS pairing is correlated to the nuclear deformation: for oblate deformation with $-0.3<β_2<0.0$, a stronger IS pairing is required to reproduce the empirical pairing gap, while for prolate deformation a weaker one is enough. Among the eight $N=Z$ nuclei, we found that $^{64}$Ge, $^{68}$Se and $^{72}$Kr show the dominance of isovector (IV) spin-singlet superfluidity, while lighter 5 nuclei $^{44}$Ti, $^{48}$Cr, $^{52}$Fe, $^{56}$Ni and $^{60}$Zn exhibit the coexistence of IV spin-singlet and isoscalar (IS) spin-triplet superfluidities. We found also that the IS abnormal density always exhibits the oblate deformation, regardless of whether the normal density is prolate, spherical or oblate.

Multi-Reference UCCSD Variational Quantum Algorithm for Molecular Ground State Energies

We implement the Multi-Reference Unitary Coupled Cluster Singles and Doubles (MR-UCCSD) model with a quantum circuit that conserves the particle number to study the ground state energies of LiH, BeH$_2$, and H$_6$. This approach simplifies the MR-UCCSD computation by integrating quantum computing techniques, and reduces its complexity. As a profit of the better MR states, our MR-UCCSD approach satisfies systematically the predefined errors below 10$^{-5}$ Hartree, which is the highest precision of single reference UCCSD approach, along the whole bond length with only hundreds of CNOT gates, and meets satisfactory the requirements of both computational precision and quantum resource reduction.

Gain and charge response of 20 inch MCP and dynode PMTs

JUNO is a 20-kton liquid scintillator detector aiming to determine the neutrino mass ordering, precisely measure the oscillation parameters, detect the astrophysical neutrinos and search for exotic physics. It is designed to reach an energy resolution of 3% at 1 MeV with the highest ever PMT coverage, using two types of 20 inch phototubes: MCP-PMT from NNVT and dynode-PMT from Hamamatsu. In this article, the gain and charge response of the MCP and dynode PMTs are investigated with the study of JUNO Central Detector prototype. The linearity of the MCP-PMT charge output is measured too to check the effect of a long tail on its charge spectrum.

Study of Charge Radii with Neural Networks

A feed-forward neural network model is trained to calculate the nuclear charge radii. The model trained with input data set of proton and neutron number $Z,N$, the electric quadrupole transition strength $B(E2)$ from the first excited 2$^+$ state to the ground state, together with the symmetry energy. The model reproduces well not only the isotope dependence of charge radii, but also the kinks of charge radii at the neutron magic numbers $N=82$ for Sn and Sm isotopes, and also $N=126$ for Pb isotopes. The important role of $B(E2)$ value is pointed out to reproduce the kink of the isotope dependence of charge radii in these nuclei. Moreover, with the inclusion of the symmetry energy term in the inputs, the charge radii of Ca isotopes are well reproduced. This result suggests a new correlation between the symmetry energy and charge radii of Ca isotopes. The Skyrme HFB calculation is performed to confirm the existence of this correlation in a microscopic model.

Experimentally well-constrained masses of $^{27}$P and $^{27}$S: Implications for studies of explosive binary systems

The mass of $^{27}$P was predicted to impact the X-ray burst (XRB) model predictions of burst light curves and the composition of the burst ashes. To address the uncertainties and inconsistencies in the reported $^{27}$P masses in literature, a wealth of information has been extracted from the $β$-decay spectroscopy of the drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S. We determine the most precise mass excess of $^{27}$P to date to be $-659(9)$~keV, which is 63~keV (2.3$σ$) higher than the AME2016 recommended value of $-722(26)$~keV. The experimentally unknown mass excess of $^{27}$S was estimated to be 17030(400)~keV in AME2016, and we constrain this mass to be 17678(77)~keV based on the measured $β$-delayed two-proton energy. In the temperature region of $(0.06-0.3)$~GK, the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate determined in this work is significantly lower than the rate recommended in the reaction rate libraries, up to two orders of magnitude around 0.1~GK. The impact of these newly determined masses and well-constrained rate on the modeling of the explosive astrophysical scenarios has been explored by hydrodynamic nova and post-processing XRB models. No substantial change was found in the nova contribution to the synthesis of galactic $^{26}$Al or in the XRB energy generation rate, but we found that the calculated abundances of $^{26}$Al and $^{26}$Si at the last stage of XRB are increased by a factor of 2.4. We also conclude that $^{27}$S is not a significant waiting point in the rapid proton capture process.

Comparison on PMT Waveform Reconstructions with JUNO Prototype

JUNO is proposed to determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and rich in many other neutrino topics. A prototype is designed and set up for better understanding sub-systems of future detector. The preliminary results show that its threshold reaches ~0.3MeV with trigger rate ~290 Hz on the ground with cosmic muon rate ~35 Hz. Aiming for a better detector understanding from PMT signal, three reconstruction algorithms are compared for PMT waveforms with different overshoot ratios, including charge integration, waveform fitting, and deconvolution. It is concluded that the three methods have similar performance on uncertainty and systematic bias while deconvolution algorithm is best to handle larger overshoot and the simplest charge integration could be considered with controlled overshoot for future fast preliminary reconstruction.

Beta-decay spectroscopy of $^{27}$S

Background: Beta-decay spectroscopy provides valuable nuclear physics input for thermonuclear reaction rates of astrophysical interest and stringent test for shell-model theories far from the stability line. Purpose: The available decay properties of proton drip-line nucleus $^{27}$S is insufficient to constrain the properties of the key resonance in $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate and probe the possible isospin asymmetry. The decay scheme of $^{27}$S is complicated and far from being understood, which has motivated but also presented challenges for our experiment. Method: The $^{27}$S ions were implanted into a double-sided silicon strip detector array surrounded by the high-purity germanium detectors, where the $β$-delayed protons and $γ$ rays were measured simultaneously. Results: The improved spectroscopic properties including the precise half-life of $^{27}$S, the excitation energies, $β$-decay branching ratios, log~$ft$ values, and $B$(GT) values for the states of $^{27}$P populated in the $β$ decay of $^{27}$S were measured and compared to the $^{27}$Mg mirror states and the shell-model calculations. The present work has expanded greatly on the previously established decay scheme of $^{27}$S. Conclusions: The precise proton-separation energy of $^{27}$P, the energy and the ratio between $γ$ and proton partial widths of the $3/2^+$ resonance were obtained, thereby determining the $^{26}$Si$(p,γ)^{27}$P reaction rate based mainly on experimental constraints. The first evidence for the observation of a large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{27}$S and $^{27}$Na is also provided. The experimental spectroscopic information can be reproduced by the shell-model calculation taking the weakly bound effect of the proton $1s_{1/2}$ orbit into account.

Super Penumbral Chromospheric Flare

We observed a C-class flare at the outer boundary of the super-penumbra of a sunspot. The flare was triggered by an emerging magnetic bipolar region that was obliquely oriented with respect to the super-penumbral fibrils. The flare started due to the low height magnetic reconnection of emerging magnetic flux with super-penumbral field resulting hot multi-temperature plasma flows in the inverse Evershed flow channel and its overlying atmosphere. The inverse Evershed flows in the chromosphere start from super penumbra towards sunspot that end at the outer boundary of the penumbra. The hot plasma flow towards the sunspot in the inverse Evershed channels show about 10 km s$^{-1}$ higher velocity in H$α$ wavelengths compared to the plasma emissions at various temperatures as seen in different AIA filters. Even though these velocities are about seven times higher than the typical inverse-Evershed flow speeds, the flow is diminished at the outer boundary of the sunspot's penumbra. This suggests that the super-penumbral field lines that carry the inverse Evershed flows, are discontinued at the boundary where the penumbral field lines dive into the sun and these two sets of field lines are completely distinct. The discontinuity in the typical magnetic field and plasma properties at the adjoining of these two sets of field lines further leads the discontinuity in the characteristic magnetoacoustic and Alfvén speeds, therefore, stopping the plasma flows further on. The multi-temperature plasma in the inverse Evershed channels exhibits \textbf{possible} longitudinal oscillations initially during the onset of the flare, and later flows towards the sunspot. In the multi-temperature view, the different layers above the flare region have the mixture of supersonic as well as subsonic flows.

Effects of tensor and $T=0$ pairing interactions on nuclear $β^+$/EC decay

The Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) plus proton-neutron quasiparticle random phase approximation (pnQRPA) approach based on Skyrme interaction is applied to study the nuclear $β^+$/EC decay for nuclei near the proton magic numbers $Z=$20, 28, and 50. With properly selected Skyrme interactions that include the tensor terms, and the $T=0$ pairing interaction, the experimental $β^+$/EC decay half-lives of these nuclei can be systematically reproduced quite well. It is shown that the tensor and $T=0$ pairing interactions play different roles in different nuclei. The specific effect is relevant to the configurations that contribute to the decay. The attractive and repulsive properties of tensor interaction for the GT state is also studied. The present results indicate that it works repulsively on the GT states dominated by the configurations from $πj_\gtrless$ to $νj_\gtrless$ orbits, while working attractively for those mainly composed of the configurations from $πj_\gtrless$ to $νj_\lessgtr$ orbits.

Using Mineral Oil to Improve the Performance of Multi-Crystal Detector for Dark Matter Searching

The inorganic crystals have been widely used for dark matter direct searching for many decades. However, limited by the crystal growth technique, a lot of small crystals have to be used together for large target mass, which results in a degradation of light collection efficiency. An experiment was built up to study the degradation, and the method of soaking crystals into mineral oil to improve the efficiency as well as reduce the interface effect were proposed and validated. Good data and MC agreements were achieved in the experiment.

Existence problem of proton semi-bubble structure in the $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si

The fully self-consistent Hartree-Fock (HF) plus random phase approximation (RPA) based on Skyrme-type interaction is used to study the existence problem of proton semi-bubble structure in the $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si. The experimental excitation energy and the B(E2) strength of the $2_1^+$ state in $^{34}$Si can be reproduced quite well. The tensor effect is also studied. It is shown that the tensor interaction has a notable impact on the excitation energy of the $2_1^+$ state and a small effect on the B(E2) value. Besides, its effect on the density distributions in the ground and $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si is negligible. Our present results with T36 and T44 show that the $2_1^+$ state of $^{34}$Si is mainly caused by proton transiton from $π1d_{5/2}$ orbit to $π2s_{1/2}$ orbit, and the existence of a proton semi-bubble structure in this state is very unlikely.

Constraint on the Ground-state Mass of 21Al and Three-Nucleon Forces

Fragmentation cross section of $^{28}$Si + $^{9}$Be reaction at 75.8 MeV/u was analyzed for studying the decay mode of single-proton emission in $^{21}$Al (the proton-rich nucleus with neutron closed-shell of $N = 8$ and $T_z = -5/2$). With the comparison between the measured fragmentation cross section and the theoretical cross section produced by EPAX3.1a for the observed nuclei (i.e. $^{20}$Mg, $^{21}$Al and $^{22}$Si), the expected yield for a particle stable $^{21}$Al was estimated. With the exponential decay law, an upper limit of half-life of $13$ ns was determined. Using the single-proton penetration model, the upper limit of single-proton separation energy of $-105$ keV was deduced. This deduced mass limit agrees with the microscopic calculation based on nucleon-nucleon (NN) + three-nucleon (3N) forces in $sdf_{7/2}p_{3/2}$ valence space, which indicates the importance of 3N forces in $^{21}$Al.

The decay characteristic of $^{22}$Si and its ground-state mass significantly affected by three-nucleon forces

The decay of the proton-rich nucleus $^{22}$Si was studied by a silicon array coupled with germanium clover detectors. Nine charged-particle groups are observed and most of them are recognized as $β$-delayed proton emission. A charged-particle group at 5600 keV is identified experimentally as $β$-delayed two-proton emission from the isobaric analog state of $^{22}$Al. Another charged-particle emission without any $β$ particle at the low energy less than 300 keV is observed. The half-life of $^{22}$Si is determined as 27.5 (18) ms. The experimental results of $β$-decay of $^{22}$Si are compared and in nice agreement with shell-model calculations. The mass excess of the ground state of $^{22}$Si deduced from the experimental data shows that three-nucleon (3N) forces with repulsive contributions have significant effects on nuclei near the proton drip line.

Beta-decay study of $T_z=-2$ proton-rich nucleus $^{20}$Mg

The $β$ decay of the drip-line nucleus $^{20}$Mg gives important information on resonances in $^{20}$Na, which are relevant for the astrophysical $rp$-process. A detailed $β$ decay spectroscopic study of $^{20}$Mg was performed by a continuous-implantation method. A detection system was specially developed for charged-particle decay studies, giving improved spectroscopic information including the half-life of $^{20}$Mg, the excitation energies, the branching ratios, and the log $ft$ values for the states in $^{20}$Na populated in the $β$ decay of $^{20}$Mg. A new proton branch was observed and the corresponding excited state in $^{20}$Na was proposed. The large isospin asymmetry for the mirror decays of $^{20}$Mg and $^{20}$O was reproduced, as well. However, no conclusive conclusion can be draw about the astrophysically interesting 2645~keV resonance in $^{20}$Na due to the limited statistics.

PMT overshoot study for JUNO prototype detector

The quality of PMT signal is one of the key items for a large and high precision neutrino experiment, like Daya Bay, JUNO, while most of the experiments are affected by the PMT signal overshoot from its positive HV-single cable scheme. For JUNO prototype detector, we have a detailed study on the PMT overshoot and successfully reduced the ratio of overshoot amplitude to signal to ~1% from previous typical ~10%, with no affection to PMT other parameters. Furthermore, we calculated that the overshoot is a result of discharging of capacitors in the HV-signal splitter and the PMT voltage divider. The study result is extremely important for JUNO and other similar experiments.

The self-consistent analysis for sub-barrier fusion enhancement effect in Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni

The fusion dynamic mechanism of heavy-ions at energies near the Coulomb barrier is complicated and still not very clear up to now. Accordingly, a self-consistent method based on the CCFULL calculations has been developed and applied for an ingoing study of the effect of the positive Q-value neutron transfer (PQNT) channels in this work. The typical experimental fusion data of Ca + Ca and Ni + Ni is analyzed within the unified calculation scheme. The PQNT effect in near-barrier fusion is further confirmed based on the self-consistent analysis and extracted quantitatively.

Why does neutron transfer play different roles in sub-barrier fusion reactions $^{32}$S+$^{94,96}$Zr and $^{40}$Ca+$^{94,96}$Zr?

The sub-barrier capture (fusion) reactions $^{32}$S+$^{90,94,96}$Zr, $^{36}$S+$^{90,96}$Zr, $^{40}$Ca+$^{90,94,96}$Zr, and $^{48}$Ca+$^{90,96}$Zr with positive and negative $Q$-values for neutron transfer are studied within the quantum diffusion approach and the universal fusion function representation. For these systems, the s-wave capture probabilities are extracted from the experimental excitation functions and are also analyzed. Different effects of the positive $Q_{xn}$-value neutron transfer in the fusion enhancement are revealed in the relatively close reactions $^{32}$S+$^{94,96}$Zr and $^{40}$Ca+$^{94,96}$Zr.
