Non-Maxwellian electron distributions resulting from direct laser acceleration in near-critical plasmas

The irradiation of few nm thick targets by a finite-contrast high-intensity short-pulse laser results in a strong pre-expansion of these targets at the arrival time of the main pulse. The targets decompress to near and lower than critical densities plasmas extending over few micrometers, i.e. multiple wavelengths. The interaction of the main pulse with such a highly localized but inhomogeneous target leads to the generation of a short channel and further self-focusing of the laser beam. Experiments at the GHOST laser system at UT Austin using such targets measured non-Maxwellian, peaked electron distribution with large bunch charge and high electron density in the laser propagation direction. These results are reproduced in 2D PIC simulations using the EPOCH code, identifying Direct Laser Acceleration (DLA) as the responsible mechanism. This is the first time that DLA has been observed to produce peaked spectra as opposed to broad, maxwellian spectra observed in earlier experiments. This high-density electrons have potential applications as injector beams for a further wakefield acceleration stage as well as for pump-probe applications.

Motion of test particles in the field of a naked singularity

We investigate the motion of test particles in the gravitational field of a static naked singularity generated by a mass distribution with quadrupole moment. We use the quadrupole-metric ($q-$metric) which is the simplest generalization of the Schwarzschild metric with a quadrupole parameter. We study the influence of the quadrupole on the motion of massive test particles and photons and show that the behavior of the geodesics can drastically depend on the values of the quadrupole parameter. In particular, we prove explicitly that the perihelion distance depends on the value of the quadrupole. Moreover, we show that an accretion disk on the equatorial plane of the quadrupole source can be either continuous or discrete, depending on the value of the quadrupole. The inner radius of the disk can be used in certain cases to determine the value of the quadrupole parameter. The case of a discrete accretion is interpreted as due to the presence of repulsive gravity generated by the naked singularity. Radial geodesics are also investigated and compared with the Schwarzschild counterparts.

Orbital stability of the restricted three body problem in General Relativity

We consider the problem of orbital stability of the motion of a test particle in the restricted three-body problem, by using the orbital moment and its time derivative. We show that it is possible to get some insight into the stability properties of the motion of test particles, without knowing the exact solutions of the motion equations.

The ergoregion in the Kerr spacetime: properties of the equatorial circular motion

We investigate in detail the circular motion of test particles on the equatorial plane of the ergoregion in the Kerr spacetime. We consider all the regions where circular motion is allowed, and we analyze the stability properties and the energy and angular momentum of the test particles. We show that the structure of the stability regions has definite features that make it possible to distinguish between black holes and naked singularities. The naked singularity case presents a very structured non-connected set of regions of orbital stability, where the presence of counterrotating particles and zero angular momentum particles for a specific class of naked singularities is interpreted as due to the presence of a repulsive field generated by the central source of gravity. In particular, we analyze the effects of the dynamical structure of the ergoregion (the union of the orbital regions for different attractor spins) on the behavior of accretion disks around the central source. The properties of the circular motion turn out to be so distinctive that they allow the introduction of a complete classification of Kerr spacetimes, each class of which is characterized by different physical effects that could be of especial relevance in observational Astrophysics. We also identify some special black hole spacetimes where these effects could be relevant.

Maximally Symmetric Spacetimes emerging from thermodynamic fluctuations

In this work we prove that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of General Relativity emerge from the geometric structure of statistical mechanics and thermodynamic fluctuation theory. To present our argument, we begin by showing that the pseudo-Riemannian structure of the Thermodynamic Phase Space is a solution to the vacuum Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory of gravity with a cosmological constant. Then, we use the geometry of equilibrium thermodynamics to demonstrate that the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions of Einstein's Field Equations -- Minkowski, de-Sitter and Anti-de-Sitter spacetimes -- correspond to thermodynamic fluctuations. Moreover, we argue that these might be the only possible solutions that can be derived in this manner. Thus, the results presented here are the first concrete examples of spacetimes effectively emerging from the thermodynamic limit over an unspecified microscopic theory without any further assumptions.

Representation invariant Geometrothermodynamics: applications to ordinary thermodynamic systems

In this work we employ a recently devised metric within the Geometrothermodynamics program to study ordinary thermodynamic systems. The new feature of this metric is that, in addition to Legendre symmetry, it exhibits invariance under a change of representation. This metric was derived in a previous work by the authors while addressing the problem of the conformal structure of the thermodynamic metrics for different representations. Here, we present an thorough analysis for the ideal gas, the van der Waals fluid, the one dimensional Ising model and some other systems of cosmological interest.

Statistical thermodynamics of economic systems

We formulate thermodynamics of economic systems in terms of an arbitrary probability distribution for a conserved economic quantity. As in statistical physics, thermodynamic macroeconomic variables emerge as the mean value of microeconomic variables and their determination is reduced to the computation of the partition function, starting from an arbitrary function. Explicit hypothetical examples are given which include linear and nonlinear economic systems, as well as multiplicative systems such as those dominated by a Pareto law distribution. We propose to use the formalism of phase transitions to study severe changes of macroeconomic variables.

Motion of charged test particles in Reissner--Nordström spacetime

We investigate the circular motion of charged test particles in the gravitational field of a charged mass described by the Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetime. We study in detail all the spatial regions where circular motion is allowed around either black holes or naked singularities. The effects of repulsive gravity are discussed by finding all the circles at which a particle can have vanishing angular momentum. We show that the geometric structure of stable accretion disks, made of only test particles moving along circular orbits around the central body, allows us to clearly distinguish between black holes and naked singularities.

Thermodynamic Geometry Of Charged Rotating BTZ Black Holes

We study the thermodynamics and the thermodynamic geometries of charged rotating BTZ (CR-BTZ) black holes in (2+1)-gravity. We investigate the thermodynamics of these systems within the context of the Weinhold and Ruppeiner thermodynamic geometries and the recently developed formalism of geometrothermodynamics (GTD). Considering the behavior of the heat capacity and the Hawking temperature, we show that Weinhold and Ruppeiner geometries cannot describe completely the thermodynamics of these black holes and of their limiting case of vanishing electric charge. In contrast, the Legendre invariance imposed on the metric in GTD allows one to describe the CR-BTZ black holes and their limiting cases in a consistent and invariant manner.

Circular motion of neutral test particles in Reissner-Nordström spacetime

We investigate the motion of neutral test particles in the gravitational field of a mass $M$ with charge $Q$ described by the Reissner-Nordström (RN) spacetime. We focus on the study of circular stable and unstable orbits around configurations describing either black holes or naked singularities. We show that at the classical radius, defined as $Q^2/M$, there exist orbits with zero angular momentum due to the presence of repulsive gravity. The analysis of the stability of circular orbits indicates that black holes are characterized by a continuous region of stability. In the case of naked singularities, the region of stability can split into two non-connected regions inside which test particles move along stable circular orbits.

Phase transitions in geometrothermodynamics

Using the formalism of geometrothermodynamics, we investigate the geometric properties of the equilibrium manifold for diverse thermodynamic systems. Starting from Legendre invariant metrics of the phase manifold, we derive thermodynamic metrics for the equilibrium manifold whose curvature becomes singular at those points where phase transitions of first and second order occur. We conclude that the thermodynamic curvature of the equilibrium manifold, as defined in geometrothermodynamics, can be used as a measure of thermodynamic interaction in diverse systems with two and three thermodynamic degrees of freedom.

Thermodynamic systems as bosonic strings

We apply variational principles in the context of geometrothermodynamics. The thermodynamic phase space ${\cal T}$ and the space of equilibrium states ${\cal E}$ turn out to be described by Riemannian metrics which are invariant with respect to Legendre transformations and satisfy the differential equations following from the variation of a Nambu-Goto-like action. This implies that the volume element of ${\cal E}$ is an extremal and that ${\cal E}$ and ${\cal T}$ are related by an embedding harmonic map. We explore the physical meaning of geodesic curves in ${\cal E}$ as describing quasi-static processes that connect different equilibrium states. We present a Legendre invariant metric which is flat (curved) in the case of an ideal (van der Waals) gas and satisfies Nambu-Goto equations. The method is used to derive some new solutions which could represent particular thermodynamic systems.

Unified geometric description of black hole thermodynamics

In the space of thermodynamic equilibrium states we introduce a Legendre invariant metric which contains all the information about the thermodynamics of black holes. The curvature of this thermodynamic metric becomes singular at those points where, according to the analysis of the heat capacities, phase transitions occur. This result is valid for the Kerr-Newman black hole and all its special cases and, therefore, provides a unified description of black hole phase transitions in terms of curvature singularities.

Generating Gowdy cosmological models

Using the analogy with stationary axisymmetric solutions, we present a method to generate new analytic cosmological solutions of Einstein's equation belonging to the class of $T^3$ Gowdy cosmological models. We show that the solutions can be generated from their data at the initial singularity and present the formal general solution for arbitrary initial data. We exemplify the method by constructing the Kantowski-Sachs cosmological model and a generalization of it that corresponds to an unpolarized $T^3$ Gowdy model.

Hopf Algebra Primitives in Perturbation Quantum Field Theory

The analysis of the combinatorics resulting from the perturbative expansion of the transition amplitude in quantum field theories, and the relation of this expansion to the Hausdorff series leads naturally to consider an infinite dimensional Lie subalgebra and the corresponding enveloping Hopf algebra, to which the elements of this series are associated. We show that in the context of these structures the power sum symmetric functionals of the perturbative expansion are Hopf primitives and that they are given by linear combinations of Hall polynomials, or diagrammatically by Hall trees. We show that each Hall tree corresponds to sums of Feynman diagrams each with the same number of vertices, external legs and loops. In addition, since the Lie subalgebra admits a derivation endomorphism, we also show that with respect to it these primitives are cyclic vectors generated by the free propagator, and thus provide a recursion relation by means of which the (n+1)-vertex connected Green functions can be derived systematically from the n-vertex ones.

Normal Coordinates and Primitive Elements in the Hopf Algebra of Renormalization

We introduce normal coordinates on the infinite dimensional group $G$ introduced by Connes and Kreimer in their analysis of the Hopf algebra of rooted trees. We study the primitive elements of the algebra and show that they are generated by a simple application of the inverse Poincaré lemma, given a closed left invariant 1-form on $G$. For the special case of the ladder primitives, we find a second description that relates them to the Hopf algebra of functionals on power series with the usual product. Either approach shows that the ladder primitives are given by the Schur polynomials. The relevance of the lower central series of the dual Lie algebra in the process of renormalization is also discussed, leading to a natural concept of $k$-primitiveness, which is shown to be equivalent to the one already in the literature.

The gravitoelectromagnetic stress-energy tensor

We study the pseudo-local gravitoelectromagnetic stress-energy tensor for an arbitrary gravitational field within the framework of general relativity. It is shown that there exists a current of gravitational energy around a rotating mass. This gravitational analog of the Poynting flux is evaluated for certain classes of observers in the Kerr field.

Quantization of 2+1 Gravity on the Torus

We use the polygon representation of 2+1--dimensional gravity to explicitly carry out the canonical quantization of a universe with the topology of a torus. The mapping-class-invariant wave function for a quantum ''big bounce'', is reminiscent of the interference patterns of linear gratings. We consider the ``problem of time'' of quantum gravity: for one choice of internal time the universe recovers a semiclassical interpretation after the bounce, with a wave packet centered at a single geometry; for another choice of internal time, the quantum solutions involve interference between macroscopically distinct universes.
